1 PIONEER GUN CLUB – MARCH 2018 Down Range The Newsletter of the Pioneer Gun Club Kansas City / Bates City, MO March 2018 Volume 21, Issue 3 Buckle up we've got a lot going on... First off, the new ventilation system is up and running at Brickyard and the reports have been positive. Big shout out to Park Wood for figuring that system out. We've actually had a few guys over the years come up with a system and they were all about the same as what we went with. We're currently trying to come up with a way to heat the range while the system is running but at least our air quality has drastically improved. We're still tweaking a few things where the air enters the range but we will be but- toning that up soon. Thanks to Richie Gattenby, Bob Hudson, Jack Smart, Tom Byrum and Joe Tapko for your help installing everything. We'll be having our club workday on March 17th 0900hrs at our McBride location so please come out and lend a hand. We'll be replacing backers, target frames, cleaning and painting the falling plates, cleaning and painting the steel targets on range 8, repainting the gate at our entrance, cleaning the clubhouses, I'd like to rake the pistol ranges to smooth them out if that's possible too. We have a lot to do so the more hands we can get, the nicer our range will be and the sooner we can get done. We'll have a few extra tools on hand but by all means if you have tools you're more then welcome to bring them out. Also, don't forget our Friends of NRA event Saturday night... tickets will be available at the door. If you're unable to make it out but still want to help out we could use help setting up that morning. We'll be meeting up at Lee's Summit Airport Hanger #1 at 8am to do so. Renewals are also due today (March 1st), please visit our website to renew. The password for our members area is located on the back of your current badge. Must be spelled as shown on your card. I'd also like to thank Nancy Perrin and Tom Byrum for stepping up to carry on our Cowboy division. Pi- oneer's Cowboy division has been around a long time so we're very happy to see it carrying on. We're also excited for Steele Challenge at Pioneer. I can see that drawing the highest amount of shooters. The targets are just the perfect size to make it fast and difficult at the same time. If you've never shot a match of any kind this might be the perfect one to fix that. If that doesn't get you excited how about a little 5 stand? Phil Parks spent a little time showing me Pioneer's new 5 stand course. That's going to be a huge hit too, I'd have a hard time putting money on just which match will draw out the most mem- bers!! The set up over there is awesome. It's great seeing how excited all of the shotgun guys are about it. Phil's thinking in early April that it will be up and running. Check the calendar so you can add that to your must shoot list. Last but not least we had our club audit a couple of weeks ago, everything turned out great (as usual) and that's because of a few things. For one, our Treasurer (Connie Baum) keeps impeccable records. Connie was even pointed out by the committee for doing so. We're really lucky to have her, thanks Connie. I'd also like to thank Graham Morris, Ken Keifer, Ed Camp and Brian Stoker for their time they put in doing the audit. Outside of that I think Im done here so, see ya on the range?? The pistol range, the shotgun range, maybe a 600 yard range??? Lets go!!! Get pumped Pioneer, our facilities are fan- tastic!! Ty

GUNSITE ACADEMY TO OFFER 3 DAY PISTOL CLASS AT MC BRIDE

Gunsite Academy of Paulden AZ which was founded by Jeff Cooper will be offering it's first class in The Modern Pistol Tech-nique at Pioneer Gun Club. This class is designed for the shooter who has a familiarity with handgun management and wishes to learn how and when to utilize a handgun for defense. The student is required to provide their own reliable semi automatic pistol (usually 9mm, 40 or 45) with extra magazines, hearing and eye protection, approximately 800 rounds of Ammunition, a suitable holster and magazine carriers (generally Kydex or similar works best) and belt. The course is offered to PGC members and the general public. Enrollment will be limited to 24 students.

For further information go to www.Gunsite.com or call Rikki @ 928-636-4565 ext 19.

We held the Missouri State Junior Olympic Championships in 3-Position Smallbore Rifle, International Air Rifle, Sport Pistol and Air Pistol. We only had 17 competitors this year, our lowest turnout in 15 years. We were able to re-arrange the shooting schedule to fire all events on Satur-day, instead of the usual two-day events. The young shooters came from all points of the state of Missouri, including one shooter from Kan-sas for the Sport Pistol event.

Pioneer Junior member Devin Schwindt earned the Gold Medal in 3-P Smallbore Rifle and the Bronze Medal in International Air Rifle. Devin has gone through our Junior shooting program with Ed Camp and is cur-rently working the Air Force Academy shooting coach with plans on at-tending the Academy next year.

We had 12 Air Pistol entries, the largest number in years. Most of these were young ladies along with three young men. Their scores were impressive. There were six sport shooters and only 3 International Air Rifle shooters. We lost 11 air rifle shooters due to a conflict with another air rifle event.

All shooters qualifying to attend the National Junior Olympics, held in Colorado Springs, will be notified by emails. Nationals will be in April. Best of Shooting to all of them. We will be hosting these events next year and I hope more shooters will be in attendance.

PIONEER GUN CLUB – MARCH 2018

Starting in March, on the 3rd Sunday morning, our Benchrest Division will be starting up for the year. There are three events each time. Rimfire, which is .22 caliber rifles at 100 yards, Varmint Rifle, which are hunting rifles or similar at either 100 or 200 yards depending on the month. And third, but not least is the “wolf” class or the unlimited class of rifles. Calibers of the varmint or the wolf class are up to the shooter.

Benchrest shooting is a great way to prove your handloads work great and are accurate. You need a load that is accurate at multiple ranges and know where your sights need to be adjusted for each distance. It also helps you learn to read the winds. Many of our shooters also work

loads up to go prairie dog hunting with further distances involved.

A two-piece rest is required, as one-piece rests are not allowed. A spotting scope can also be used. Targets used this year are all score targets, we will not be shooting the various targets used in the past. As in the past, plaques will be awarded at the end of the season to the top shooters in each class that fire the required number of targets. Come on out and have some fun!

Action Pistol News for March, 2018

Action Pistol shooting schedule for March and April, 2018: Wednesday evening practice sessions – Brickyard, 5 p.m. – March 14 and 28, 2018.

April 11 and 25, 2018 These practice sessions are lots of fun and open to everyone. They are a great informal

way to find out about Action Pistol. New shooters are always welcome.

Monthly matches move to McBride on the first Sunday of the month starting March 4. April monthly match will be held Sunday, April 8 – delayed one week due to Easter.

All subsequent monthly matches for the summer will be the FIRST SUNDAY of the month.

Please keep in mind the Flagler Cup will be held on Thursday, May 17 – which means we are going to need lots of help that week. If you can contribute a couple of days to help with the range, or to RO the actual event, it would be greatly appreciated. Work days will be sched-uled during April and early May in order to get the ranges ready for the match. Please help whenever possible. We were forced to schedule the Flagler Cup during the week because the NRA scheduled the World Match on the 19th and 20th – the week-

end before Bianchi. We also need additional sponsors for both Regional matches this year.

Bullseye Indoor League By Bill Kloeckner

Indoor league meets on Monday nights at 6 p.m. We alternate between rimfire at 50 feet and centerfire at 25 yards. We are usually done shooting the 90-round course by 7:30 p.m. New and experienced bullseye shooters are welcome. We meet through 4/9/2018. Call Bill at 816-373-7567 for information. < 99-3 shot by Frank Harles on 2/19 during the rapid fire portion of the Gallery Course

This season the rifle targets are based on a theme and will vary each week similar to what we've done in the past. For the pistol matches we will shoot the same standard pistol “Bullseye” targets and the same “Qualification” match targets again this season to track how we are all progressing. Let's have some fun – safely! March 2nd “Small Bore Silhouette” Theme Rifle Targets March 9th “Qualification” Theme Rifle Targets March 16th (Season Finale & Awards) This is the current schedule. It may change. Check your email and/or Facebook for updates. ** If I don’t have your email address or it's changed, please give it to me so I may add you to the list. **

Casual Shooter Representative My name is Steve Tuttle and I am the newly elected PGC Member Repre-sentative on the Executive Board. My duties will be determined by the Board, but one of my main functions is to act as a representative for the general membership. So, if you have any suggestions, questions or com-ments regarding the Club, please contact me and I will communicate them to the Board or endeavor to obtain an answer. My e-mail address is: [email protected] We have a committee currently working on revising the Club By Laws. Most of the changes are simple wording clarifi-cations. However, one major item is to change the club meetings from monthly to quarterly. Attendance has been dropping for several months and the December meeting could not be held due to insufficient attendance for a quorum. A survey conducted last year showed that most of those respond-ing preferred to have quarterly meetings. If there is anything I can help you with, please let me know. Steve

The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) said it has received shipment of nearly 100,000 repatriated M1 Garand rifles to replenish nearly depleted stocks of U.S. military surplus rifles sold the past two decades to eligible American citizens. In addition, the Secretary of the Army

recently released approximately 8,000 much-anticipated milsurp M1911/M1911A1 pistols to CMP.

The repatriated M1 Garands―about 86,000 from the Philippines and 13,000 from Turkey―went on loan to those countries following WWII under the Military Assistance Program (MAP). Because the rifles technically belong to the U.S. Army, it was up to that organization, not CMP, to seek repatriation. Under the anti-civil rights Obama administration, repatriation was never on the table; during those years CMP worked quietly with the U.S. Army, preparing to eventually receive the repatriated rifles and milsurp pistols. Last week’s receipt of the fire-arms is the culmination of long effort while adopting a wait-and-see attitude by CMP. Today, the semi-automatic Garands with a fixed capacity of eight rounds are obsolete for military purposes, and they now enjoy collector and “collector-shooter” status among American riflemen, especially for those who participate in CMP As-issued John C. Garand competitions. The U.S. Army, having no use for the repatriated rifles, has turned them over to CMP for subsequent sale to eligible individuals. The practice at CMP is to clean, carefully inspect, and test fire every salable firearm to ensure safe and proper operation. Then, a price is set based upon its overall condition, with a few select rifles garnering higher, collector-status prices. “We’ve already begun on the Turkish rifles,” Johnson said. “They’re already filtering into the system and there are some on the racks for sale now.” Of note to collectors, he said the Turk and Filipino Garands are indistinguishable from any other M1 Garand. “We haven’t seen any kind of markings thus far, nothing to identify what country has had them,” he said. Pistols, too The milsurp M1911/M1911A1 pistols will also go to eligible citizens through CMP sales on a lottery basis. CMP posts eligibility requirements for pistol and rifle purchases on its website; those requirements include proof of U.S. citizenship, participation in marksmanship activities and membership in a CMP affiliated club, as well as passing an FBI NICS criminal background check. In the case of the M1911/M1911A1 pistols, buyers must pass two NICS checks, one at CMP and a second at the Federal Firearms License dealer where they pick up the shipped hand-

gun.

And while the present 107,000 milsurp rifles and pistols are good news for CMP, collectors and competitors, there is more on the horizon. South Korea has approximately 80,000 M1 Garands and about 600,000 M1 Carbines loaned to that country under MAP. South Korea abort-ed an attempt to sell those loaned firearms to U.S. importers a few years ago. CMP is hopeful that these will also eventually be repatriated

and passed on to the American citizen.

Nancy Perrin and Tom Byrum have stepped up to carry on our Cowboy Action division. Please stay tuned for dates.

Thank you both very much for carrying on such a great tradition within the club. I know you both will do a great job!

PIONEER GUN CLUB – MARCH 2018

Pioneer Junior News by Ed Camp

It’s been a rough winter for our juniors. With the temperatures falling below freezing and then the furnace going out, we have postponed our weekly shooting for a few weeks until we can get the range up to a reasonable tem-perature for the youths. Shooting prone on a concrete floor at 45 or 50 degrees is not my idea of keeping kids healthy.

We still could use several kids. We start at 5pm and finish up between 9 and 10 pm. We run relays, so the youths are not there the entire time. We teach marksmanship, the fine art of hitting small targets. We supply the firearms and ammo, all for the cost of $5.00 a night. Now this is not a session where you bring your kid to just shoot for the night to have fun, but rather a program that they need to attend each week to learn the basic and advanced forms of shooting a rifle. We usually take the youths starting at age 12 and based on their maturely.

Give me a call if you are interested in this, by the way the parents of the youths do not have to be members of the club, they can be your neighbors or friends. Ed Camp at 816-333-7559

ARA News by Kevin Hutsell

ARA, which stands for American Rimfire Association, will be starting soon. This is benchrest shooting with .22 caliber rifles at small targets shot at 50 yards. We shoot 6 targets, each with 25 bullseyes on them, making for 150 records shots plus sight-ers. The rifles are single shot and the rests can be one piece or two pieces with the majority of them being one piece. Scopes are used, usually 32 power or greater. Standard velocity ammunition is best used.

Now shooting a .22 long rifle at 50 yards might sound simple but I assure you that it can get interesting, especially when the winds start blowing. It doesn’t take much of a breeze to move that little bullet a lot. Did I mention that the scoring is worse edge and not the usual best edge scoring? Bullet cut the score ring into the lower value, you get the lower value. Makes it much more interesting.

We shoot each month, March through September on the 4th Sunday starting at 8:00 am and are usually over by noon. Check the club calendar for this event!

With the 2018 season about to get started we have made a few changes for this year we will have a registered Cast Bullet Assoc. match for those that desire to shoot a registered match. The course of fire will remain much the same but we did change the Military matches to shoot all the targets at one hundred or two hundred yards like the bench rest shooters this will keep eve-rybody on the same time per relay. Any one that desires to come out and shoot and is not a CBA member and just wants to shoot cast bullet is more than welcome and bring what ever you like to shoot we have classes for all rifles and pistols from Hunter Class to Unlimited. The even months we will shoot at 200 yards and odd months we will shoot at 100 yards we shoot the

Third Wednesday of the month with the range open for practice at 8:30 and the match starts about 9:00 AM. Our first match this year will be March 21 all targets will be shot at 100 yards bench rest, 60 round course of fire. Any interested or have any questions please feel free to contact me at 816-200-9662.

One overlooked fact about the Boston Tea Party of December 16, 1773, is that the colonist, dressed as Indians, inadvertently chose low tide to throw the party – and the tea – overboard. What happened was that the nearly 350 crates of tea piled up in the shallow water, and the party goers had to jump overboard and smash open the crates to make sure the tea was ruined.
