The camp was a great success thanks to all of you. We have already started planning next year’s event. We would especially like to thank those of you that came early and stayed after the camp to help out. Your assistance took a lot of pressure off Mrs. McClernan who devotes countless hours of her time to coordinate this event each year. We would also like to thank everyone who supported the Bamboo Dojo Invitational Tournament in August. This was the 20 th Anniversary of the Mr. Matthews’ tournament and the official kick-off for the Yoshukai Tournament Circuit . The circuit consists of 4 tournaments, 2 Yoshukai tournaments (Bamboo Dojo Invitational sponsored by Mr. Matthews and Port Orange Yoshukai sponsored by Mr. Myers) and 2 Goju tournaments (“The Battle of the Ridge” in Lake Wales and Mr. Bill Wahne’s tournament in Palm Bay). For those of you not competing in the circuit, YKI could still use your support at the tournaments as timekeepers, scorekeepers and judges. Your support would be greatly appreciated both by the organization as well as the sponsoring dojos. Photos of the 2013 Tai Kai and the Bamboo Dojo Tournament have been posted on the YKI website under the ‘PHOTOS’ link. We’ve included just a sample in this issue of the newsletter. Please visit the website and take a look! Our next event is a weapons training in New Port Richey on October 19 th , 2013. The focus will be on bo, sai, tonfa, and nunchaku. Hope to see you there! Yoshukai Karate International is proud to announce the promotion of Michael H. McClernan, Kyoshi to the rank of Hachi Dan (8th Dan).
McClernan Sensei was promoted on Friday evening, July 19th, 2013 during a presentation ceremony held at the 2013 Tai Kai. The event was sanctified by a joint proclamation of the Yoshukai Karate International Testing Board recognizing McClernan Sensei for his outstanding leadership and dedication to the Yoshukai Karate International organization. During the ceremony, McClernan Sensei was presented with a beautiful handcrafted kakijiku (hanging scroll), a unique piece of artwork commissioned in Japan by a local artisan. The kakijiku is constructed entirely by hand of silk brocade and fine paper and features a hand painted calligraphy inscription (in kanji) that reads:
In addition, the board presented McClernan Sensei with a set of handcrafted hanko stamps from Japan displaying his name and rank in Japanese kanji. Fellow board members also presented several other unique gifts. Mr. Tiger Moore, long-time friend and colleague presented a rare antique
hanko stamp. On behalf of the Titusville Dojo, Mr. Copeland and Ms. Farrell presented a beautiful granite stone engraved with the Yoshukai Karate International symbols and Mr. John Matthews presented a wonderful wishing bowl on behalf of the Bamboo Dojo. And finally, Mr.
Bob Bush presented a vintage bottle of Bushmills “Black Bush” and Mr. John Alford and Mr. Pat Fletcher presented finely handcrafted whiskey.
Michael H. McClernan, Kyoshi, 8th Dan
In deep appreciat ion for your outstanding leadership and dedication so generously given in

Yoshukai Karate International is proud to announce the promotion of Mr. Eddie Machen to 6th Dan. Mr. Machen was recently appointed a position on the Yoshukai Karate International Board of Directors.
Mr. Machen started training in the mid 1970’s with Mr. Randy Caine at the Sylacauga Karate School. Before he began studying martial arts, Mr. Machen actually had the blind luck of meeting Yamamoto Sensei while he was visiting the Sylacauga Karate dojo. Mr. Machen had stopped by to observe the class and was leaning up against the wall with his arms crossed. Yamamoto Sensei walked over to him, slammed a forearm into his chest and said, “do not cross your arms - you get hit!" It made such an impression on Mr. Machen that he joined the class. He trained off and on for several years before making brown belt in late 80s and
then black belt in the early 90’s. Shortly after receiving his black belt, Mr. Machen took over the Sylacauga Karate School when Mr. Randy Caine relocated to Texas. Mr. Machen operated the Sylacauga Karate School for 20 years before passing it on to his top students and is a tremendous asset to our organization. CONGRATULATIONS!
Yoshukai Karate International Board of Directors would like to extend a special THANK YOU to Mr. Rick Polland Sensei (Maryland) for his expertise and assistance with the procurement of the kakijiku that was presented to McClernan Sensei during his promotion ceremony. Mr. Polland is the owner of the SwordStore.com and represents many of the finest smiths (Toshyo) and artisans of swords and iaito in Japan today. The SwordStore.com also provides sword restoration services and a full range of products for both the martial artist and the collector. They are committed to providing uncompromising integrity, thoroughness to detail and to selling only the best equipment available. Mr. Polland has also been studying various budo since 1968 and iaido and jodo since 1974. He is one of the leading jodo experts in the United States. On Saturday, July 20th, 2013, Mike Foster Sensei and his family made a special guest appearance at the 2013 Tai Kai. Foster Sensei is the founder of the Yoshukai International Karate Association (YIKA) and is credited for bringing Yoshukai Karate to the United States.
Foster Sensei began his training during the late 1950’s at the Itazuke Air Force base in Japan. He later received senior rank from Dr. Tsuyoshi Chitose and Mamorou Yamamoto in the mid 1960’s. In 1966 through 1969 he was the undefeated United States Karate kumite champion. In the mid 1970’s, Foster Sensei established the Yoshukai International Karate Association (YIKA). The association would later grow to include portions of the United States, Canada, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand. In 1990, Mr. Foster
formed the Yoshukai International Karate Association’s testing board to provide a standardized system for ranking dan grades. The board’s Executive Director, Michael H. McClernan along with a testing board consisting of senior dan grades worked together to establish the kata and kumite standards currently in effect today. After twenty- seven years of holding the rank of 7th Dan, Sensei Foster was promoted to the rank of Ku Dan (9th degree black belt) and given the title of Hanshi (Master Instructor) at a ceremony on May 17, 2003 in Titusville FL. The rank and title were bestowed by the Shihan and Renshi classes of Mike Foster's Yoshukai International Karate Association.
Yoshukai International Karate Association is a direct descendant of Dr. Tsuyoshi Chitose (Chito-Ryu). Foster Sensei trained with Mamorou Yamamoto Sensei under Dr. Tsuyoshi Chitose and is celebrated for taking that knowledge and evolving the art with his own personal style. In 2008, the testing board established Yoshukai Karate International (YKI), a “not-for-profit” corporation whose mission is to preserve and promote the history and traditions of Yoshukai Karate while maintaining the highest standards of integrity, family values and the fair and equitable treatment of all members. As we continue on our journey we are building on the works of the great masters who have come before us.
