Dear students,
As Boston’s mayor, I am thrilled to welcome you to our city. Boston is one of the world’s greatest hubs of higher education, and students are a vital part of our community. I encourage all of you to take advantage of what our city has to offer.
We have a lot to be proud of here in Boston. We have vibrant culture; beautiful, walkable
neighborhoods; cutting-edge innovation; and, of course, history. And we are always growing and changing, making our city even better for the future.
So while you’re in Boston, make sure you make your time here memorable. Explore our neighborhoods; meet new people. Learn about local issues, volunteer your time and talent, and register to vote. Start off your career strong by interning and working in our diverse industries. There is truly something for everyone here.
Here in Boston, we are committed to our students and we want to see you succeed. We hope this brochure will help you identify services and be useful during your time as a Boston resident. More information can be found at: Boston.gov.
Thank you for choosing Boston as your city for learning, and good luck in the semester ahead!
With best wishes,
Mayor Martin J. Walsh

SAFETYBe mindful of your surroundings. Always be respectful of your neighbors. Remember, there may be families living in your building. At night, walk in groups and avoid distractions like headphones and cell phones. Be sure to take note of your school’s police department phone numbers, and in an emergency dial 911. When moving, keep an eye on your belongings and be sure to lock your vehicle between trips.
Emergencies can happen anywhere, anytime. Alert Boston, the city’s emergency notification system, will keep you connected. Sign up to get emergency alerts on your phone, by email, or text message at: Boston.gov/AlertBoston.
Be safe on balconies, roofs, and decks. Decks, roofs, and balconies pose a safety hazard when allowed to deteriorate or when misused.
Be smart about outdoor grilling. Charcoal grills must be on the ground away from buildings. Propane tanks are only allowed on first floor porches with steps to the ground. More fire safety tips at: Boston.gov/Fire.
Protect your home. Make sure to lock both doors and windows when home and away. If windows do not lock properly, contact your landlord, call 311, or download BOS:311.
TRANSPORTATION AND PARKINGLooking for an affordable and eco-friendly way to get around the city fast? The T is an obvious choice! Get your hands on a Charlie Card at: MBTA.com. Or sign up for a New Balance Hubway bike share membership at: TheHubway.com.
