HOLIDAY EVENTS

From 1959 into the '60s, Eleanor Ford hosted high society receptions in honor of her granddaughters' debutante seasons. For each girl, she put a unique twist on holiday décor, with her love of flowers often taking center stage. This holiday season, Ford House will be authentically decorated as it was during the holiday receptions Mrs. Ford hosted to honor her granddaughters from 1959 through the ‘60s. Archival photos were used to re-create some of Eleanor Ford's more creative touches, in-

cluding Christmas trees suspended from the Gallery ceiling. The tour of the main floor also features stories and photos of the Ford family’s Christmas traditions and other grand re-ceptions and parties held at the estate, while the tour of the second floor allows visitors to explore the personal spaces of the home. Tours run noon—7:30 p.m., Wed.-Sat., and noon—4 p.m. Sundays, through January 5, 2020.

Plus 10 a.m.—3 p.m. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.All daytime tour tickets (noon— 4 p.m.) are sold at the Ford House Visitor Center, first come,

first served, no reservations. For information or to purchase tickets in advance for evening tours (5—7:30 p.m. Wed.-Sat.), call (313) 884-4222, or see fordhouse.org. The grounds are open for walking until 5 p.m.Admission prices: $12 adults, $11 seniors, $8 children 6-12, and free for 5 and under and

Ford House Members. Grounds-only admission is $5. The Edsel & Eleanor Ford House is located at 1100 Lake Shore Rd., in Grosse Pointe Shores.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Detroit's Dominant Dashmen by Dr. John Telford

Statewide, nationally, and internationally, predominant dashmen came out of Detroit throughout the 20th century. From the 1920s until the 1990s, dozens of sprinters from the Detroit Public Schools Athletic League (DPSAL) went on to attain broad acclaim. Interestingly, the competitive distance of more than half of them was the quarter-mile (440 yards) and the slightly shorter 400 meters, whereof I wrote a now out-of-print techniques book on the event, 'The Longest Dash' (Track & Field News Press, Los Altos, CA, 1965, 1971). These Motown quarter-horses who shattered city and state records included

old Northeastern's John Lewis, Northwestern's Stan McConner, Central's Cliff Hatcher (inducted posthumously into the Detroit Public Schools Sports Hall of Fame in 2019), Southeastern's George Wesson and Lorenzo Montgomery, Cass Tech's Harlan Huckleby, Mumford's James Grace, Ford's Mike Holt, and old Cool-ey's Stan Vinson and lucky Claude Tiller (who incidentally will wed the lovely Holly Powell on January 1). Were these stellar long sprinters to be ranked comparatively via the unforgiv-

ing stopwatch alone, the fastest had to be Pershing High School's state cham-pion Darnell Hall (pictured), with his 400-me-ter clocking of 44.5 seconds. Hall, who ran on America's winning 1,600-meter relay team in the 1996 Olympics, belongs in the DPS Sports Hall of Fame with Hatcher and two other for-mer DPSAL quarter-milers who are in it already — this writer (Northwestern and Denby High Schools, Wayne State University, the Detroit Track Club, and the United States national team, inducted in 2014) and Deon Hogan (Kettering High and the University of Kansas, inducted in 2016). In 1957, I became the first Michigan col-legian and first DPSAL-bred sprinter to run the full quarter-mile under 47 seconds and then do it again and yet again at 400 meters, going undefeated at the distance representing the U.S. in Europe. Deon Hogan was the first De-troiter under 46 seconds with a world-record 45-second clocking in 1979 for Kansas. Hogan's 45-second time for the full quarter could have been as fast as 44.5 for the shorter 400 meters, which would have placed him a step ahead of Darnell Hall's all-time Detroit best. Henry Carr, the great "Gray Ghost" of Northwestern High and Arizona State,

who was also inducted posthumously in the DPS Sports Hall in 2015, won the Olympic 200-meter dash in 1964 and like me clocked quarter-miles in the 46-second range, but unlike me, Hall, and Hogan, he wasn't a quarter-mile spe-cialist. I need to say, though, that had Hall, Hogan, and I raced against each other in

a hypothetical contest at our physical peaks from different decades, with me challenging them on a modern rubberized composition surface rather than the archaic dirt and cinders of my era, we would have been competing for second place if the preternaturally gifted Carr were in the race. Rubberized tracks have been calibrated to be 1.8 seconds faster than those of dirt and cinders, and like me, Henry Carr never had the chance to run on rubber, which gives back bounce rather than the hindering drag of dirt. After winning that Olympic 200 in world-record time, Carr's relay leg on the victorious Olympic 1,600-meter team was in the low 44's — faster than Olympic 400-meter champion (and my old rival) Mike Larrabee's leg on that same relay team. I intend to ensure that the Hall of Fame committee will see this column and

appropriately induct Olympian Darnell Hall in 2020!Former DPS Superintendent John Telford was an NCAA All-American quarter-

miler at WSU. For signed copies of his six Detroit-oriented books, call (313) 460-8272 or email [email protected]. Hear him Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. and Mondays at 6:30 p.m. on WCHB AM1340 and on Detroit Internet Tele-vision (DETipTV.com). His website is AlifeontheRUN.com.

Foot Health Today

DR. JAMES SCHELBERG

LOCKER ROOM FOOT PROBLEMS QUESTION: Can you catch other people’s foot infections even if you never come in contact with their feet?

ANSWER: Going barefoot in a public place can be all it takes to develop foot problems. Contact with infecting organisms may be made through use of contaminated articles (shoes, slippers, towels, bathmats, etc.) or walking barefoot in shower rooms, gyms, swimming pools, and the like. Athlete’s foot — a fungus infection — is perhaps

PODIATRIST

the most common and best known. However, other viruses may also be transmitted in this way in susceptible individuals. Look for symptoms of itching, peeling or cracked skin, then seek prompt Podiatric help.

the dress rehearsal at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 13. Tickets may be purchased

online at MichiganOpera.org, or by calling (313) 237-7464. There is currently a

chamber recital series, performed by members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, that is highly recommended. The next chamber recital will fea-ture the performance of film music favorites. formed with luminaries such as Geri Allen, Marcus Belgrave, Charlie Gabriel,

and Donald Walden. Gui-tarist A. Spencer Barefield has performed throughout Europe and the U.S. with Roscoe Mitchell, Lester Bowie, Oliver Lake, and Reggie Workman. Pamela Wise’s music comes from tracing the music of her African ancestors. Drum rhythms and patterns are the basis of her work. Dan Ouellette of DownBeat Raves is an assured bop pianist with a Tyneresque (as in McCoy Tyner) touch. Keita has toured with Marcus Belgrave, Charlie

Gabriel, Harvey Thomp-son, and Alvin Waddles.Jeff Pedraz is an out-

standing composer/educa-tor, who has toured inter-nationally with jazz guitar legend Pat Martino. On the faculty of the Uni-

HOLIDAY EVENT

Put a Ring on it at Detroit Zoo’s Wild LightsIt may be cold outside, but hearts are warm during Wild Lights at the Detroit Zoo. Dozens

of couples have become engaged during the annual holiday light display, now in its seventh year, with the help of Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) staff.Opportunities abound for the ultimate romantic gesture dur-

ing Wild Lights. Red lights swirl to form the words “Marry Me” in a private area of the Cotton Family Wetlands Boardwalk, il-luminated at just the right moment as the big question is posed. During one proposal, rose petals were sprinkled from above; for another, a violinist played sweet melodies to set the mood. The cost to have DZS staff help facilitate a marriage proposal during Wild Lights is $150.“We’re thrilled so many couples have chosen the Detroit Zoo

as a place to celebrate this momentous occasion,” said Gerry VanAcker, DZS chief operating officer. “Wild Lights is a perfect place to pop the question because the lights and sights create such a romantic atmosphere.”Wild Lights guests have until January 5, 2020, to ask for their

loved one’s hand in marriage. Call (248) 541-5717 ext. 3301 to arrange a proposal.Couples can also say “I do” at the Detroit Zoo. Unique and ex-

otic wedding venues include the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery, Polk Penguin Conservation Center, Rackham Fountain, Arctic Ring of Life and Cotton Family Wetlands Boardwalk. Visit the Private Events section of the Zoo’s website at detroitzoo.org for more information and to start planning the big day.The Detroit Zoo is located at the intersection of I-696 and

Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak.

CINEMA CULTURE A Review by Paul Arlon

Six Fave Flick Picks for 2019

#1

#5

#6#2

#3

#4

This year saw an avalanche of theatrical releases (almost 200 from the major studios, and an astonishing 12,000+ more titles were screened in the world-wide film market).Of course I didn't see them all,

no one could. But, from my still-pro-sized list of viewed movies, here are some that stood out for me.#1) Alita: Battle Angel. Hard

to top James Cameron's futur-istic robot warrior-girl. Simply amazing cinema. Starring real-life beauty Rosa Salazar, cov-ered in a special effects suit and portraying the lost-and-found recycled cyborg Alita. When her adopted father

(played by Christoph Waltz) is threatened by a ruthless elite who has cornered the market on a deadly spectator sport, no one suspects that Alita is any-thing other than a simple girl-android. But, simple, she's not. Alita: Battle Angel is one of my

favorite movies of the year.

#2) Once Upon A Time In Hol-lywood. Quentin Tarantino's magnum opus. Brad Pitt's best role in decades. And, the best dog in movies since Lassie pulled little Timmy out of the well. It's essentially the story of the Sharon Tate murder, as perpetrated by the Manson Family, a drugged out band of hippies following their false messiah. Like I said, Brad Pitt is terrific, and his dog is even better.#3) Jojo Rabbit. Director Tai-

ka Waititi (as Hitler, below left) gave us a satirically potent take on Nazi propaganda and the persecution of the Jews. In a nod to Anne Frank, Jojo

(played by Roman Griffin Da-vis) finds that his single moth-er, a fashionably dissident Scarlett Johansson, is hiding a young Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic. Jojo Rabbit captures the absurdity of hate and learned malice in an unexpectedly gentle way.

#4) Marriage Story. This is Adam Driver's Oscar-worthy performance. Streaming on Netflix, starring Scarlett Jo-hansson and Driver as a pair of artistic souls torn apart by their need to follow their indi-vidual stars. He's a noted director of stage

plays in New York and she's just gotten a lucrative gig as a TV actress in L.A. He won't leave NYC, and she

can't leave L.A. Their little boy gets caught in their marital tug-of-war. At once sadly dramatic and optimistically humorous. Worth your time any way you can see it, big or small screen.#5) The Addams Family. The

Chas. Addams 'All together ooky' crew stars in a new and improved animated feature which paints a wonderfully clear moral picture of 'not judging a book by its cover.' When sullen daughter

Wednesday decides to stop home-schooling and instead attend her quaint little town's 'normal' middle school, the mean-girls that rule the class-room don't stand a chance when they try to bully her. The same happens when the town's adults try the same thing with her assembled family, with all of the oddball Addams' in town for son Pugs-ley's rites of passage ceremony.#6) Knives Out. There are

plenty of murder mysteries that, once you see them, there's no appreciable reason to ever watch them again. Knives Out isn't one of them. Starring a world-class cast with Chris-topher Plummer, Chris Evans, Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Michael Shan-non, Toni Collette, and my breakthrough actress of the year, Ana de Armas, as Marta.Director Rian Johnson want-

ed to do an Agatha Christie-inspired movie and he assem-bled an ensemble like no other this year. Great fun.So, there you go, a half-dozen

of my favorite movies from this year. Movies that I'll watch more than once. (And, prob-ably, a bunch of times.)

Three New Exhibitions at Cranbrook Art Museum

Clockwise from left: Haystack students Barbara Wallace and Nancy Bohlin on the weaving deck, 1961. Ruth Adler Schnee working with designs for Slits and Slats and Pits and Pods. Christy Matson, Overshot Variation I, 2018 (detail). On Friday, December 13, from 6–9 p.m. the Cranbrook Museum of Art will preview three new exhibitions. Price of admission (includes all three previews) is free for ArtMembers and $20 for non-members. Ruth Adler Schnee: Modern Designs for Living — December 14 – March 15, 2020 This retrospective exhibition and publication about Cranbrook Academy of Art graduate, textile

and interior designer, Ruth Adler Schnee, still in active practice at age 96, affirms her pivotal role in the development of the modern interior. The exhibition presents Adler Schnee’s textile designs created over her prolific seven-decade career, including screen-printed fabrics that helped define mid-century American modernism as well as their later translation into woven textiles. In the Vanguard: Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, 1950–1969 — December 14 – March 8, 2020 In the Vanguard: Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, 1950-1969 is the first museum exhibition

to explore the impact of this important artistic community located in rural Maine and its impact on twentieth-century art. Featuring approximately 90 works, including textiles, ceramics, glass, metalwork, paintings, and prints, as well as archival materials, In the Vanguard features works by artists such as Anni Albers, Dale Chihuly, Robert Ebendorf, M.C. Richards, and Cranbrook alumni Olga de Amaral, Jack Lenor Larsen, Harvey Littleton, and Toshiko Takaezu, among others. Formed by a group of craft artists in 1950 with support from philanthropist Mary Beasom Bish-

op of Flint, Michigan, and led by artists Francis and Priscilla Merritt, who had spent time at Cran-brook, Haystack shares many affinities and connections with Cranbrook Academy of Art. Visitors are invited back on Saturday for a special "curators in conversation" talk with Rachael Arauz and Diana Greenwold, joined by Paul Sacaridiz, Executive Director of Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. The talk is on Saturday, December 14, at 2 p.m. Christy Matson: Crossings — December 14 – March 15, 2020 Christy Matson is a Los Angeles-based artist known for her painterly approach to textiles. Matson

employs a hand-operated, computer-programmable Jacquard loom to create intricate weavings to which she often applies paint and other fiber techniques. Christy Matson: Crossings features 16 weavings configured into 2 monumentally scaled tapestries that were originally conceived for a special commission for the U.S. Embassy in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. Additionally, Matson will present a selection of smaller recent works that continue her reflections on historic weave struc-tures in conjunction with her unique approach to pastiche and collage. For information, call (248) 645-3320 or see cranbrookart museum.org. The Cranbrook Art Mu-

seum is located at 39221 Woodward Ave., in Bloomfield Hills.
