Principal’s Message Mrs. Mitsopoulos Dr. Clark Families, Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a good, relaxing break! 2016 presented many challenges to our community, but we were happy to see our families return to Fort McMurray and to our school. We continue to welcome back students who are moving back during the school year. Our school community remained strong and supportive throughout. We look forward to a great 2017. At Dr. Clark School, we are proud to offer many programs to enhance the learning experiences of our students. This year, our grades 5 and 6 students have been learning coding as part of their technology studies. We continue to offer the Tech-Trades Academy in pre-engineering and multimedia. Our music program provides opportunities for students in choir and ukulele. Extra-curricular sports programs and Aboriginal Drumming are also available. In addition, we have many special events planned for the coming months to provide variety of learning opportunities for our students. Occasionally we request parent volunteers to assist with special events. Volunteers must have a valid criminal record check on file. Our secretaries are happy to assist parents with information about the criminal record check. Wishing everyone a wonderful year ahead! Merrie-Rae Mitsopoulos Principal

Oskayak Aboriginal Drumming Group The Oskayak Drumming Group, with students from both Dr.Clark and Beacon Hill Schools, visited the Continuing Care Unit of the hospital before the holidays. It was a joy to see the smiling faces and excitement from students, residents, parents and staff. The group sang a Aboriginal songs, as well as Christmas carols. The music was well received by all and, it was amazing to see how well the group played together with so little practice. The group also enjoyed wearing their new regalia and moccasins that we received a few days before the visit thanks to a generous donation from Syncrude. With the donation we were able to buy new drums, rattles and regalia for the group and school. We would like to thank the elder who built our drums, the two ladies from British Columbia who made our regalia, and the lady from Newfoundland who made our moccasins. We are one happy group! This will be for grades 4-6 and will be held each Wednesday from 3:30-4:40 in our school gym, starting on January 4th. Children are asked to come with their inside shoes and have their coats and boots with them as well. They will not be allowed back into the main part of the school once they come to the gym. Forms have already been sent home with students to indicate interest in the program. If there is a large group like last year, the students will be split into two groups. Parents are expected to pick up their child at the gym entrance no later than 4:40 and they must come to the door to get them.
