With support and encouragement, engineering is a profession that women

can excel in, say IEM's women engineers sub-committee.

Says Ir Magdalene Tan Lee, another sub-committee member, “These days,

male engineers cry foul because many companies prefer lady engineers.

What type of personality suits this job?

If you are adventurous, inquisitive and are good in Mathematics, you are

suited for a career in engineering.

Engineers must also be flexible and, apart from having a strong

understanding of the fundamentals, engineers must be able to adapt to

current developments.

In some ways, women make better engineers. True?

In engineering, you work as a team with other engineers or professionals.

Women, who tend to have better interpersonal skills, would be good players

in projects that require teamwork.

Engineers must also be very precise and pay close attention to detail,

qualities which are inherent in women.

Also, engineering involves a lot of juggling, which, women being multi-

taskers, are good at.

Women aren’t strong enough to be

engineers

Women aren’t strong enough to be engineers

To be an engineer, you have to get your hands dirty (literally)

Women are too timid to be engineers

Women aren’t as good at science, technology or maths

Women are good at soft skills, not technical ones

Women can’t reach the top jobs in engineering

You can’t be an engineer and raise a family

This Woman Made History By Becoming Malaysia's First Female Underwater Welder - 26 Jun

2019

At 21 years old, Nur Izzati AthirahMohamadYusoff made history by becoming

the first female underwater welder in Malaysia

Underwater welding is a highly dangerous job that involves working in a risky

environment with minimal visibility. An underwater welder is required to repair

ships, dams, pipelines, offshore drilling rigs, locks, and sub-sea habitats.

So, taking on such a career requires both mental and physical strength –

something Nur Izzati had proven she could handle.
