Dr. Mark Nelson is in his thirty-sixth year of teaching and performing professionally. He has premiered over 30 new works for tuba and released two internationally recognized tuba CD recordings. His degrees include the B.A. from Point Loma Nazarene University, the M.M. and D.M.A. from Arizona State University, the M.Ed. in Education Administration from the University of Vermont, and the Licentiate Performer’s Diploma from Trinity College of Music, London. Previous appointments include Professor of Music at Millikin University and Associate Professor of Music at the University of Vermont.

He has been the Performing Arts Head and Director of Bands at Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona since 2000.

P r o g r a m

The Tuba Tangos were written by Argentinian composer Adriana Figueroa Mañas for Tuba and Piano, commissioned by Dr. Nelson. José María López Kieffer, a musician from the same town as Mañas, wrote the string orchestra arrangement. The performance by the Symphony Orchestra tonight marks the world premiere of this arrangment. The orchestra would like to thank Dr. Nelson and the composers for the opportunity to perform their work. A select group of our musicians will perform all four movements of the work in recital with Dr. Nelson on April 12 at Pima Community College.
