In the last 50 years, the National Federation Party has achieved many things for people of all walks of life in Fiji. Some of its major achievements are listed below:- 1. Establishment of the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF). 2. Successfully and peacefully negotiating the independence of Fiji and the 1970 Constitution. 3. Proposing the idea of a local university that led to the establishment of the University of the South Pacific (USP). 4. Brought about ALTO in 1966 and ALTA in 1976 in partnership with the landowners that provides mechanisms and basis for resolution of future land tenure problem in Fiji. 5. Played a key role in the sugar industry by negotiating the Denning Award, purchase of the CSR and SPSM and establishment of the FSC and in restructuring the sugar industry in 1984 allowing farmers to have greater say in the industry. 6. Establishment of the Housing Authority of Fiji. 7. Establishment of the Reeves Commission to review the 1990 Constitution and the successful passage of the 1997 Constitution. 8. National Federation Party Plan for “Your Future”

1. Reduce Value Added Tax (VAT) from 15% to 10%.2. Increase retirement age to 60 in the Civil Service.3. Give full scholarships to eligible students from poor families who do not qualify for scholarships under the Toppers Scheme.4. Increase monthly pension under the Social Pension Scheme to $50.5. Remove restrictions on workers’ rights and allow free collective bargaining.6. Hold an Education Commission of Inquiry into curriculum, teaching and class size.

7. Meet with leaders of the Taukei community and others about improving the Fijian administration as a matter of priority. For political stability, the NFP will work hard with other political parties to implement policies that ensure the Taukei community feels supremely confident and secure about its place at the heart of Fiji. 8. Re-establish Public Works Department. 9. Improve health services and upgrade hospitals and health centres to provide quality care.10. Increase the availability of land for agricultural purpose through a ‘Master Lease’. 11. Provide welfare funding for all widows/ widowers/destitute regardless of other support already provided.

12. Promote gender equality in access to productive resources, education, training, economic opportunity and decision making at all levels. 13. Support training to police and military to enhance professionalism and commitment to democratic governance and rule of law. 14. Implement a minimum guaranteed price on cane of $85 per ton and provide subsidy for inputs such as fertilizer and weedicides. 15. Produce a set of national guidelines for child protection, safety and support. 16. Provide strengthened support for training and employment opportunities for young people.

Dr Sunil Kumar: Is a highly qualified economist who brings strong analytical ability to the NFP.Qualifications: He has four degrees: one in Physics and Mathematics and 3 in Economics. He has BSc from USP, a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from USP, a Masters in Economics from USP and PhD in Economics from the University of Queensland. He has been an aca-demic at USP since 1997 and his areas of expertise are in poverty analysis, national accounting and policy analysis. He also runs two businesses, one in Suva and one in Nadi.Activism: Throughout his career Dr. Kumar has beena unionist and a political activist. He was a member of the Fiji Teachers Union and a

long-serving committee member of the Staff Association of USP and took the Presidency of the same Union in 2008. He was the President of the Fiji Youth and Students League for many years since late 1980s and early 1990s agitating against anti-democratic forces after the 1987 coups. Dr. Kumar was engaged in fundraising for the Youth League to educate poor students who were denied scholarships. As a student he was an active member of the USP Students Union. Affiliation: He has been an active member of NFP since late 1990s, serving as a member and secretary of the Selection Committee in 2001. He has served as a member of the Party Working Committee and was involved in the review of the NFP Constitution after the 1999 elections.
