Events Golden Jubilee Celebrations of HRS, Kovvur
Horticultural Research Station, Kovvur celebrated its
Golden Jubilee on 08th January, 2019 on successful
completion of fifty years. Sri Somireddy Chandramo-
han Reddy garu, Hon’ble Minister for Agriculture,
Horticulture, Sericulture and Agri-Processing, Govt. of
A.P was the chief guest and Sri K.S.Jawahar garu,
Hon’ble Minister for Excise and Prohibition, Govt. of
A.P., presided over the function. Sri Chiranjiv Choudhary, IFS, Vice-Chancellor & Ex-officio Secretary
to Govt. of A.P, Sri Bonam Nageswara Rao, Hon’ble Member, Board of Management, Dr.YSRHU,
University Officers, Associate Deans, Heads of Research Stations,
Scientists, Peoples representatives, Officers of line departments
and about 750 farmers from various districts have participated in
the celebrations. Hon’ble Ministers also inaugurated office
building and new tissue culture laboratory on this occasion. An
Exhibition was also arranged by different institutes and line
departments.

Inauguration of New Buildings at Pandirimamidi
Sri Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy garu, Hon’ble Minister for Agriculture, Horticulture, Sericul-
ture and Agri-Processing, Government of Andhra Pradesh has inaugurated Administrative Building
of KVK, Lab cum office building and Palmyrah processing unit of HRS, Pandirimamidi on 08.01.2019
in the august presence of Smt.Vanthala Rajeswari, MLA, Rampachodavaram, Sri.Chiranjiv
Choudhary, IFS, Vice-Chancellor & Ex-officio Secretary to Govt. of A.P and university officers of
Dr.YSRHU. Hon’ble Minister distributed Poultry and Osmanabadi Goat Units, Millet Biscuit making
Unit and Azolla units to the tribal beneficiaries.
Education
Exposure Visit
Students from SKPP Horticultural Polytechnic, Ramachandrapu-
ram visited HRS, Ambajipeta on 03.01.2018 as part of educational
tour and were briefed about the research activities pertaining to
crop improvement, crop production, Entomology and Pathology
divisions and mass multiplication of biocontrol agents and its role
for the control of pests and diseases of coconut.
RHWEP students allotted to KVK, Periyavaram were taken on
an exposure visit to Biological-control lab and Soil testing
laboratory at Nellore on 08.01.2019. ADA, Bio-control lab
explained in detail about biological agents used in Horticul-
ture and Agriculture to control pests and diseases and their
mass multiplication and ADA, Soil testing laboratory
explained in detail about types of soils, their characters
various parameters to be considered while collecting soil sample for testing and importance of soil
testing. Ms.S.M.Sailaja, Research Associate (Hort.) coordinated the programme.
Guest Lecture
Dr. T.Suseela, Associate Professor (Hort.), CoH, Venkataramanna-
gudem attended as resource person and delivered a lecture on
“Prospects of Horticulture in India” at ‘Yuva Mahotsavam-2019’ at
Y.N. College, Narsapuram on 08.01.2019.

Research
KVK, Venkataramannagudem has devel-
oped low cost semiautomatic poultry egg
hatcher for the incubation of poultry eggs
into chicks in 21 days with a capacity of
30 numbers and is equipped with
automatic temperature control with LED
display and digital hygrometer. This low cost hatching unit will be very useful to the small poultry
entrepreneur’s and household hatching of eggs for their additional income and multiplication of
poultry birds.
Extension
Training Programmes
On 02.01.2019, KVK Venkataramannagudem conducted an
awareness programme on ‘Formation of Farmer Producers
Organization/Company for Beekeepers of West Godavari
district for strengthening the Beekeeping activity and
marketing of honey. In this program Dr. R.V.S.K. Reddy,
Director of Extension, Dr. A. Sujatha, Dean of student affairs,
Sri. T.V. Subbarao, Deputy Director of Horticulture, Scientists
from KVK, Venkataramannagudem and progressive farmers have participated and discussed about
the modalities for formation of FPO with Beekeepers in the district.
On 10.01.2019, Dr.A.Srinivas, Principal Scientist & Head, Dr.
S.Adarsha, Scientist (Ento.) and Sri. K.C.Bhanumurthy, Scientist
(Hort.), KVK, Pandirimamidi participated in a training program on
‘Improved management practices in cashew’ organized by SERP as
resource persons and explained about the present status of
cashew cultivation in agency area, nutrient and pest management
to be followed in cashew orchards to maximize the yields.
On 04.01.2019, KVK, Venkataramannagudem conducted an off
campus training program on ‘Integrated crop management in cashew’
at Pandugudem and Lankalapalli villages. Farmers learnt about pest
and disease management in cashew and later distributed critical
inputs to the farmers under ICM in cashew. In this program more
than 50 farmers have participated. Miss B. Rupa Devi, Research
Associate (Soil science) coordinated the programme.
Training programme on ‘Cultivation aspects of loose flower crops
like Marigold and Crossandra on 07.01.2019 at KVK, Periyavaram.
The farmers were explained about the importance of loose flowers
and their seasonal cultivational aspects to gain good returns. Ms.
S.M.Sailaja, Research Associate (Hort.) coordinated the programme.

HRS, Ambajipeta organized District level workshop on "Scientific
Coconut Cultivation Technologies/Value addition in coconut"
sponsored by Coconut Development Board, Cochi on 02.01.2019.
Dr.G.Ramanandam, Principal Scientist, (Hort.), Dr.N.B.V.
Chalapathi Rao, Principal Scientist (Ento.) and Smt. B. Neeraja,
Scientist (Pl. Path.) explained about production technologies,
pest and disease management. About 100 farmers from East Godavari district have participated in
the workshop.
Dr.P.Ashok, Scientist (Hort.) HRS, Venkataramannagudem attended
two days training programme as a resource person at RHTI,
Gopannapalem, Eluru and explained the use of solid bio-fertilizers
and also demonstrated the use of liquid bio-fertilizers through drip
irrigation to farmers from 03.01.2019 to 04.01.2019.
On 03.01.2019, KVK, Vonipenta conducted an off campus training
programme on “Pests and Disease management in Chillies” at
Nagasanipalli village of Khajipeta mandal. Sri. G. SandeepNaik,
Scientist, (Pl. Path.) and Dr. V. Yugandhar, Research Associate
(Hort.) explained about fertilizer management and IPM practices in
chilli.
On 08.01.2019, KVK, Vonipenta conducted an off training
programme on “Correction of micronutrient deficiency in agricul-
tural and horticultural crops” at Annavaram village of Chapadu
mandal. Dr. V. Nagarjuna, Research Associate, (SS& AC) explained
about the importance and role of micronutrients in crops, method of
application, fertilization for correcting the nutrient deficiency.
On 10.01.2018, KVK, Vonipenta conducted an off campus training
programme on ‘Value addition in tomato’ at Vonipenta village of
mydukur mandal. Smt R. Sunitha, Research Associate (Home science)
and Sri E. Ravi Goud, Research Associate, (Agri. Extn.) explained
about the importance and entrepreneurial aspects of tomato ketchup
and motivated SHGs to initiate small enterprise on value addition of
tomato. Demonstration on preparation of tomato ketchup, jam and
jelly was also conducted.
On 05.01.2019, Sri. G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist, (Pl. Path.), KVK, Vonipenta attended a training
programme as resource person for FPOs organized by KVK–Utukur and APRIGP at Chitvel and
explained about pests and disease management in acid lime, banana, papaya, mango and other
horticultural crops.
Dr.G.Ramanandam, Principal Scientist, (Hort.), HRS, Ambajipeta participated in one day training
programme on “Quality planting material production in coconut including hybrids” at HRS,
Vijayarai on 04.01.2019 and briefed about the crop production, protection technologies and quality
planting material production in coconut.

Diagnostic Visits
On 02.01.2019, Dr. A.Srinivas, Principal Scientist & Head and Dr.
S.Adarsha, Scientist (Ento.), KVK, Pandirimamidi diagnosed virus
affected plants in chilli, brinjal and redgram fields at Vedurupaka
village of Gokavaram mandal and suggested to follow IPM practices
and judicious use of fertilizers to manage the pests and diseases in
crop.
On 09.01.2019, Dr. A. Devivaraprasad Reddy, Scientist (Fishery
Science), KVK, Venkataramannagudem visited the fish farms at
Bangarugudem and observed red disease in the carps.
Recommended application of 500 g. (5%) bromine / 400 g. of
potassium permanganate per acre along with oxytetracycline or
doxycycline @ 70-80 g. per 100 kg of feed.
On 09.01.2019, Dr. T. Vijaya Nirmala, Scientist (Veterinary Science),
KVK, Venkataramannagudem visited poultry flock and dairy farm at
Bangarugudem village. Observed symptoms of reduced feed intake,
depression, increase in mortality, mucoid diarrhoea, ruffled feathers
in three weeks old desi chicks and suggested IBD vaccination at 14
days of age and supportive treatment with 20 g. of lixen powder in
100 ml of water for 1500 chicks and 5 ml ambiplex liquid orally for 5
days. Also observed reduced growth rate, reduced feed intake, soil licking, diarrhoea in buffalo calf
and suggested treatment with piperzine @ 5ml/10 kg body weight and mineral mixture @30 g
orally.
On 09.01.2019, Dr. A. Devivaraprasad Reddy, Scientist (Fishery
Science) and Dr. T. Vijaya Nirmala, Scientist (Vet. Sci.), KVK,
Venkataramannagudem visited the fish farm at Yarraigudem and
explained about the importance of feed for the growth of fish and
also calculation of feed based on the size of fish.
Dr.K.Seshakiran, Assistant Professor (Pl. Path.), CoH, Venkatara-
mannagudem visited Vallampatla village of West Godavari
district along with III year UG students on 11.01.2019 and
observed the incidence of fusarium wilt in tomato fields of the
farmers. Demonstrated the application of bacillus subtilis strain
to the diseased tomato plants which is multiplied at the
pathology laboratory of CoH, Venkataramannagudem.
Ms. S.M. Sailaja, Research Associate (Hort.), KVK, Periyavaram
visited chilli fields at Chavali village of Pellakur mandal on
04.01.2019. The crop was infested with cutworm and farmer was
suggested to spray chlorpyriphos @ 2.5ml/l to control the pest.

On 08.01.2019, Mr. D. Vinod Naik, Research Associate (Agril.
Extension), KVK, Periyavaram visited papaya fields near
Venkatareddypalli of Balayapalli mandal and observed mosaic
disease incidence. Suggested to eradicate the affected plants to
reduce spread of the disease and application of carbofuran granules
@ 1 kg ai/ha followed by spraying of phosphamidon (0.05%) at an
interval of 10 days for vector control.
On 08.01.2018, Dr.P.Manjari, Scientist (Veterinary Science), KVK,
Periyavaram conducted diagnostic visit at Periyavaram village of
Venkatagiri mandal and observed weak calves with heavy load of
nits even after application of ectoparasiticide solution, loose feces
and exudate from eyes. The farmers were suggested to administer 2
bolus of zycloz for each calves.
On 09.01.2019, Dr.P.Manjari, Scientist (Veterinary Science), KVK,
Periyavaram conducted diagnostic visit at Petlur village of
Venkatagiri mandal and distributed salt licks for sheep to overcome
mineral deficiencies as part of FLD.
On 02.01.2019,Sri. G. SandeepNaik, Scientist, (Pl. Path.) and Dr. V.
Yugandhar, Research Associate (Hort.), KVK, Vonipenta visited
groundnut and guava fields for diagnosis of pest and diseases
incidence at Vedurur village of Chapadu mandal. Observed stem
rot disease in groundnut and mealy bug and nematode infestation
in guava. Suggested to spray tebuconazole 1 ml/l for control the
stem rot and acephate @0.1% or or profenophos @ 0.1% for
melaybug control respectively.
On 04.01.2018, Dr. V. Yugandhar, Research Associate (Hort.),
KVK, Vonipenta has visited papaya fields for diagnosis of pests
and diseases at Adireddypalli village of Mydukur mandal.
Identified leaf mosaic virus and ring spot virus in papaya field and
recommended to spray imidacloprid @ 0.3 ml/l or fipronil @2
ml/l for the control of vectors.
On 04.01.2019, Dr. V. Nagarjuna, Research Associate, (SS&AC) and
Sri. E Ravi Goud, Research Associate, (Agril. Extension), KVK,
Vonipenta conducted follow up visits for FLD on “Enhancing
bunch yield through application of N, K and S in banana” at
Yerrabali village of Mydukur mandal. The Scientist the
demonstrated the preparation of 2 % KNO3 and 2 % Micronutrient
mixture for enhancing the bunch yield of banana.

On 05.01.2019, Dr. V. Nagarjuna, Research Associate, (SSAC) and
Sri. E.Ravi Goud, Research Associate, (Agril. Extension), KVK,
Vonipenta visited chilli fields for diagnosis of pests and diseases
incidence at Uppuguntapalli village of Mydukur mandal. The
scientists identified the virus diseases and suggested to spray
acephate @ 1.50 gm/l or fipronil@ 2 ml/l for controlling the insect
vector.
On 08.01.2019, Dr. V. Yugandhar, Research Associate (Hort.), KVK,
Vonipenta visited chilli field for diagnosis of pests and diseases at
Adireddypalli village of Mydukur mandal. Identified upward
curling and recommended to spray imidacloprid @ 0.03% or
dimethoate @ 0.2% + neemoil @ 0.5%.
On 07.01.2019Dr. V. Nagarjuna, Research Associate, (SS&AC) and
Sri. E.Ravi Goud, Research Associate, (Agril. Extension), KVK,
Vonipenta conducted follow up visits to CFLD Pulses- Red gram
fields cultivated under NFSM sponsored by ICAR- ATARI, Zone- X,
Hyderabad at Kesavapuram village of B. Mattam mandal. During the
visit scientist observed the pod fly infestation in red gram and
suggested to spray monocrotophos @ 0.16% or profenophos @ 0.2% to control the pod fly at pod
setting stage.
On 07.01.2019 and 11.01.2019, Dr. V. Yugandhar, Research
Associate (Hort.), KVK, Vonipenta visited banana OFT trial
“Banana bunch management” for follow-up at Sunkulagari village
and Musalnayanapalli village of Mydukur mandal. During the visit
Scientist observed potassium deficiency in banana and
recommended foliar application of potassium nitrate @0.5%.
Method Demonstration
On 05.01.2019, Dr. V. Nagarjuna, Research Associate (SS & AC) and
and Sri. E Ravi Goud, Research Associate, (Agril. Extension), KVK,
Vonipenta conducted a method demonstration on fortification of
bio-fertilizer azospirillum @ 2 Kgs in 200 Kgs FYM at Musalinayana-
palli village of Mydukur mandal.
Front Line Demonstrations
KVK, Venkataramannagudem initiated honey-based products sale
at ITDA campus, KR Puram, West Godavari District through
Giridhara Honey Producers Society, K.R.Puram. The processed
products i.e., dry fruits with honey, honey chocolate, amla with
honey, lip cream, moisturiser, honey soap etc., were displayed
and sold on 11.01.2019.

,On 11.01.2019, KVK, Venkataramannagudem initiated FLD on
‘Effect of Urea Molasses Mineral Blocks (UMMB) on production
performance of dairy animals in tribal areas’ under ICAR-TSP at
Yerraigudem and Pandugudem villages of Buttaihgudem mandal.
Dr. T. Vijaya Nirmala, Scientist (Veterinary Science) explained the
importance of Urea Molasses Mineral Blocks (UMMB) as feed to
dairy animals in case of green fodder scarcity and also to improve
production performance of dairy animals and distributed UMMBs to farmers.
KVK, Periyavaram distributed Arka Vegetable special to the farmers
of Kondrajupalli village of Balayapalli mandal as a part of FLD on
10.01.2019 for bittergourd and suggested the farmers to spray Arka
Vegetable Special @ 15gm + 10gm of citric acid salt for every 15 l of
water to mitigate micronutrient deficiency. Ms. S.M.Sailaja, Research
Associate (Hort.) coordinated the programme.
Field Day
On 03.01.2019, KVK, Pandirimamidi conducted field day on Redgram
var. LRG 52 at Labbarthi village of Rajavommangi mandal. Crop
cutting experiment was conducted and farmers feedback on the
variety was taken as a part of the program. Explained plant
protection measures to be followed at flowering stage to minimize
borer complex in redgram. About 30 farmers have participated in
the programme. Dr. A.Srinivas, Principal Scientist & Head and Dr.
S.Adarsha, Scientist (Ento.) coordinated the programme.
General Meetings
On 09.01.2019, Dr. E. Karuna Sree Principal Scientist & Head, KVK, Venkataramannagudem partici-
pated in five days work shop to Home Scientists working in KVKs as resource person and explained
about the designing and lay out kitchen gardens for year round production of vegetables.
On 11.01.2019, Dr. E. Karuna Sree, Principal Scientists & Head KVK, Venkataramannagudem partici-
pated as expert in two days seminar on “Farming Systems for Nutrition” jointly organized by
ANGRAU and MSSRF for evaluation of various Integrated Farming system models for nutritional
security in rural/tribal areas.
Sri. Y. Ramakrishna, AWM (Contract) and Sri. N. Nagaih, AWM
(out sourcing), HRS, Ambajipeta attended training at NBAIR,
Bengaluru during 8th & 9th January, 2019 to learn the latest
techniques in mass multiplication of bioagents and maintenance
of its cultures in Entomology and Plant Pathology.
Visits
Dr.A.Sujatha, Dean of Student of Affairs visited Centre of Excellence on
Beekeeping at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore on
08.01.2019.

Thirty farmers along with the Department of Horticulture officials
from Chhattisgarh state visited KVK, Venkataramannagudem
demonstration plots, nursery, azolla unit, vermicompost unit and
Centre of Excellence on Protected Cultivation on 10.01.2019 as a part
of interstate exposure visit to Andhra Pradesh.
On 09.01.2019, KVK, Venkataramannagudem scientific staff created
awareness on horticultural crops and other demonstration units to
Z.P.H. School students from Peddatadepalli village.
Agriculture students from Sri Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari Inter-
mediate College, Penugonda visited Dr.YSRHU campus on
05.01.2019. They have visited the demonstrations units in KVK as
well as other institutes on the campus.
Sri Vasavi Pharmacy College students visited KVK, Venkataraman-
nagudem on 04.01.2019 and learned about the nursery manage-
ment, azolla cultivation, vermicomposting and maintenance of live-
stock units.
Dr. B. Ramanujam, Principal Scientist (Pl. Path.) and Dr. S. Selvaraj,
Scientist (Ento.) from National Bureau of Agriculturally Important
Pests, Bengaluru visited Biocontrol laboratories of Entomology and
Plant Pathology at HRS, Ambajipeta on 04.01.2019.
Dr.A.Sujatha, Dean of Student Affairs visited Horticultural Research
Station, Ambajipeta and reviewed the Entomology technical
programme (Plan and Non-plan) on 05.01.2019.
Dr.James George, Project Coordinator, AICRP on tuber crops visited
HRS, Peddapuram and HRS, Kovvur on 06.01.2019 and reviewed the
progress of ongoing experiments under AICRP on tuber crops .
UG Students of Agricultural College, Rajamahendravaram visited College of Horticulture, Venkatara-
mannagudem as a part of their Educational Tour on 09.01.2019. Dr.A.Harshavardhan, Assistant
Professor has explained about the activities of the college and farm. Later they have visited the
model orchard and ELP units of the college.

Radio, Vijayawada on 10.01.2019.
Awards
Dr.K.Ravindra Kumar, Scientist (Hort.), HRS, Kovvur was con-
ferred with ‘Best Dissertation Award for Ph.D. Thesis -2017’
from Dr.K.V.Prasad, Director, DFR, Pune for his research work
entitled “Studies on plant regeneration in marigold though in
vitro culture of male and female gametophyte in Tagetes spp.”
and ‘Best Oral Presentation Award’ from Dr. S.K.Malhotra,
Agriculture Commissioner, Ministry of Agri. and Farmers
Welfare (GOI) for the paper entitled “Production of doubled haploids (DH) through colchicine
treatment of anther and ovule culture derived plants of marigold (Tagetes spp.)” in National
Conference on Ornamental Horticulture to Uplift Rural Economy held at Maharana Pratap
University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur on 10.01.2019.
Dr.R.Nagalakshmi, Scientist (Hort.), HRS, Kovvur received 3rd
prize for poster presentation in National Conference on
Ornamental Horticulture to Uplift Rural Economy held at
Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology,
Udaipur on 11.01.2019 for the paper entitled “Impact of flower
inducing chemicals on flowering, floral attributes and spike
yield of tube rose cv. Prajwal”.
