End of School Year

Principal’s Message Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of St Joseph‟s College,

“Christmas is almost here!” So what do we think of when we hear such news? Probably the thoughts that come to mind are those associated with the necessary preparations that go to make the day an enjoyable occasion marked by lots of food, presents, lights and tinsel. Besides this type of joy there is another: “Let‟s arise with joy in our hearts and share it with everyone. The meaning of Christmas will always be the birth of Jesus, God‟s Son.” Author uncertain.

Christmas is an anniversary celebration of when God gave us the gift of Himself without splendour or opulence but in poverty and weakness, in the form of a tiny baby in an animal enclosure. Jesus, Son of God, emptied himself of power, privilege and possessions and was born into the human race in the humblest of manner. Boris Pasternak in his book, Dr Zhivago, wrote: “Something in the world had been changed. … The story of a human life became the story of God and filled the Universe.” Indeed a worthy anniversary to celebrate. In the early years of the Church, Christianity grew and spread very quickly. This was because Christians were known for their unusual compassion for those around them – so different to the treatment metered out by the Romans. The first Christians knew that God, taking flesh in Jesus for the sake of the whole world, wasn‟t an event of the past; it was the pattern for their own lives every day. People in any age of anxiety and oppression were attracted to a religion whose adherents dared not to follow the culture of the day but to transform it. Round about the year 250 A.D., a plague struck Alexandria and killed nearly half the population. Rather than trying to flee and save themselves, Christians stayed. In a time of pain and danger, they stayed and cared for the sick and dying.

If we choose to reach out to others in the midst of our own worrying, as did those early Christians, we, too, can be liberated by the joy of knowing ourselves to be united to Christ. “Everything necessary has been given to us in the Gospels. What is it? Firstly, to love one‟s neighbour – the supreme form of living energy. Once it fills the heart of man, it has to overflow and spend itself.” Boris Pasternak. Dr Zhivago.

The goodness of a Christian, one who models life on Christ, is not a matter of achieving a high moral standard or of scoring high marks in a test of “rules- observance”. It is letting the wonder of God‟s love come through our lives and allowing it to be available to other people. Love is given so that love can be born in another and given in return.

“As a baby, Jesus came From his home above, He left his throne and where he was To teach us how to love. As a baby, Jesus came The hope of eternal life, Recalling us back to God Giving meaning to our lives.”

HAVE A HAPPY and JOYOUS CHRISTMAS!

Peace and Best Wishes.

“ “

Luke 1:30-33

The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

Like Mary, I too came into the world for a purpose. That purpose will not be revealed to me as dramatically as it was to her. Perhaps she heard the word of God so clearly because of her sinlessness. And also because of her silence: there was no clamour drowning it out.

Too often I fear the emptiness, the darkness, the silence within me. Yet it is there that the Spirit lives and works, even when my prayer seems most arid. God, help me to go daily into the quiet of my own heart, to meet you there, in love and adoration.

What is present to me is what has a hold on my becoming. I reflect on the presence of God always there in love, amidst the many things that have a hold on me. I pause and pray that I may let God affect my becoming in this precise moment.

Isaiah 40:11

Like a shepherd He will tend His flock, In His arm He will gather the lambs And carry them in His bosom; He will gently lead the nursing ewes.

Psalm 79:13-80:1

But we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise. To the choirmaster: according to Lilies. A Testimony. Of Asaph, a Psalm. Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock! You who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth.

Ezekiel 34:11-12

For thus says the Lord God: Behold, I, I myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out. As a shepherd seeks out his flock when he is among his sheep that have been scattered, so will I seek out my sheep, and I will rescue them from all places where they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness.

Psalm 23:1

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

1 Peter 5:4

And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

Hebrews 13:20

Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant.

Ezekiel 34:23-24

And I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. And I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them. I am the Lord; I have spoken.

John 10:11

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

Micah 5:4

And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth.

John 10:27-30

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. I and the Father are one.

Behold the Lamb of God

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: grant us peace.

Pope Francis:

Jesus’ three questions to Peter about love are followed by three commands: feed my lambs, feed my sheep. Let us never forget that authentic power is service, and that the Pope too, when exercising power, must enter ever more fully into that service which has its radiant culmination on the Cross. He must be inspired by the lowly, concrete and faithful service which marked Saint Joseph and, like him, he must open his arms to protect all of God’s people and embrace with tender affection the whole of humanity, especially the poorest, the weakest, the least important, those whom Matthew lists in the final judgment on love: the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick and those in prison (cf. Mt 25:31-46). Only those who serve with love are able to protect!

Mary held no special office. She was powerless: young in a world that valued age, female in a world ruled by men, poor in a stratified economy. Her being “favoured” by God to be the mother of the long awaited Messiah is a complete reversal of expectations of how the King of Kings should arrive. And who would think that the Messiah would be a Lamb? The lowly shepherds received the message from the angel that the Messiah had been born in a manger in Bethlehem. In this humble location, God is shown to be on the side of the poor, the outcast, the despised, as God has Jesus enter the human scene at the bottom of the social pyramid. Completely vulnerable, here is the newborn „Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world‟ with the shepherds as his first disciples. Through his sacrifice – the sacrifice of a perfect lamb, without spot or blemish – every day he shows mercy on us and grants us peace – but only if we really let him in to our lives and in to our hearts. This year‟s theme to „Carry Your Lantern‟ has been an invitation, like the angels message to the shepherds, for each of us to seek out and find Jesus – in ourselves and in others - and much more, to spread the Good News. The Shepherd invites us to fully participate in our community of faith, to connect with our brothers and sisters in Christ, and to be the face - and to see the face - of Jesus in others. Now and always. Mr Scott McDermott Leader of School Evangelisation

The Year 9 Commerce class recently had the opportunity to compete in the ASX Schools Sharemarket Game. Each student was given a virtual $50,000 to buy and sell shares over a 10-week period. The aim is to buy and sell shares in the ASX-listed companies using real market prices in real share market conditions. The game is based on actual share price movements in the domestic market, with share movements on the Australian Securities Exchange being reflected immediately in the game. The class performed very well during the game with stiff competition as to who would make the biggest profit. At the close of trading the student who had made the wisest investment decisions was Tyson Hanlon who finished up with a portfolio value of $57,608.68! This fantastic result placed Tyson 81st out of 6244 students in NSW.

Tyson invested in Bega Cheese, Fortescue Metals, Japara Healthcare, Northern Star Resources, Skycity Entertainment, UGL, APA, Telstra, Retail Food Group, Independence Group and Karoon Gas. Khye Watkinson and Katie Kearney closely followed Tyson in second and third place. Tyson, Khye and Katie all placed in the top 5% nationwide.

Well done to everyone who participated in the Game! This was quite a challenging Game with the market experiencing some significant falls only to turn around and recover toward the end.

Lunchtime last Wednesday saw the return of St Joseph’s All Stars vs. St Joseph’s Indigenous All Stars touch football game. On short notice Mr Quinn (St Joey’s All Stars) and Mr Inglis (Indigenous All Stars), each put together a side of enthusiastic players. Some could say Mr Inglis has something to prove after seeing his side go down in the initial game a few months earlier. The Indigenous All Stars did not let him down, winning the game 4-1. It just so happened, that the game was played on one of the hottest days of the year.

Students and teachers endured these hot conditions; neither side giving up until the referee blew the final whistle for game over. Both games played this year generated a huge amount of interest from players, spectators and teachers. In the lead up to the game there was a lot of talk over who was going to triumph on the day. This game came at a perfect time, because it was Mr Inglis’ last day at the college. Mr Inglis is a young man that always gave his full attention to the student’s needs and welfare, and I am sure that is the one of the main reasons his Indigenous side was aggressive in defence, passing the ball around and moving quickly to the try line. Congratulations to all players, the large crowd of spectators and the teachers that came to support the players. We would like to wish Mr Inglis all the best, good luck with the next chapter. Our Year 11 class investigated the management of Dune Care from Fingal Beach and Cudgen Creek. Our first stop was at Fingal Beach. There were eight of us and we were met by a lady called Mrs Kay Bolton who is in charge of the Fingal Coastcare. Mrs Bolton explained to us that the beach looked quite different to what it does now because there was a lot of sand mining done in the past. The Fingal Coastcare volunteers have over the years planted a lot of vegetation over the sand dunes to stop the sand from blowing away. We walked up the track to the light house and down the other to the Basalt Rocks which were standing in unusual formation just above the water. These were a result of the lava flow traveling all the way from Mt Warning when it erupted a long time ago.

Fingal Coastcare Sand mining Basalt Columns Fingal

We made our way down to Dreamtime Beach and were shown a cave called Hairy Man’s Cave which you could walk into. It was very dark and you had to get out the same way you went in. We noticed a lot of spinafex grass and some of the other plants had flowers on them. Our second stop was at Kingscliff Beach where Jane Lofthouse from the Tweed Shire Council spoke to us about sand dunes and how to keep our beaches safe and healthy. She showed us the different ways that Council is trying to build up healthy sand dunes to protect our parks and buildings.

The thing I learnt most was that the Spinafex grass stops the sand on the beach blowing away and helps to fix sand dunes. Mikayla Stanley (Year 11)
