1. Professor Lord Edgar Adrian (1889-1977) was jointly awardedthe Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1932, togetherwith Sir Charles Sherrington, for their work on the function ofneurons.

2. Sir Henry Hallett Dale (1875-1968) was jointly awarded theNobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1936 for hisdiscoveries relating to the chemical transmission of nerveimpulses.

3. Sir Charles Kao FRS FREng, was jointly awarded the NobelPrize in Physics in 2009 for his groundbreaking achievementsconcerning the transmission of light in fibres in opticalcommunication.

4. Professor Sir Peter Mansfield FRS (1933 - 2017) was jointlyawarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 2003, forhis work on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) as a diagnostictechnique.

5. Sir Ronald Ross (1857-1931) was awarded the Nobel Prize forPhysiology or Medicine in 1902 for the discovery of the life-cycle ofthe malarial parasite Plasmodium.

6. Professor Joseph Rotblat (1908-2006) shared the Nobel Peace Prizewith the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, theorganisation of scientists he established in 1957.

7. Sir John Vane FRS (1927-2004) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology for his work on prostaglandins in 1982.

8. Dr Mario Vargas Llosa (1936-) is one Latin America's mostsignificant novelists and essayists; he rose to fame in the 1960s withnovels such as The Time of the Hero, The Green House andConversation in the Cathedral. Dr Vargas Llosa was formerly a VisitingProfessor at Queen Mary and was made an Honorary Fellow in 1988.He was awarded The Nobel Prize in Literature 2010.
