DRA Asks, “Why Haven't We Done This Sooner?"

D RA has two staff members with close relatives currently serving overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan and we have started collecting items to send over to their units. What we can’t figure out is why we didn’t

do this sooner? It is very simple to organize and it is so appreciated by the troops – it’s a no brainer!

There are several websites that will help you through the process. Some organizations take your collected items and send them for you if you have no specific solider overseas. These websites will also give you some insight into what our young men and women are experiencing. One item on the request list is eye drops; the sand is constantly blowing over there and soldiers need to rinse their eyes! This is something I never thought about but now that it has been pointed out I can see how great it would be to have a small container of Visine in a pocket close by.

The number one item requested in packages is socks; no matter what site you visit or who you talk to that is a constant! The item I find most telling is that our soldiers are requesting “Beanie Babies;” the small stuffed animals that were a huge fad a few years ago. They want these to hand out to the children they meet and help. I can remember standing in line at Geppetos in Woodbury waiting for them to open so that I could buy a Beanie Baby from the new shipment that had just arrived for my daughters. Now those little stuffed animals will be handed out by US troops in hopes of making a child on the other side of the globe smile and trust the soldier giving it to them. It makes you take pause.

The US Postal Service is also a great help in the process. They provide special Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes for free. You can obtain them from your local Post Office or order them on line. There are do’s and don’ts on the package lists so do some research. The way we started was to “google,” “what to send the troops!” It could not have been easier.

DRA Doc Inducted As Fellow In The American College Of Radiology

Andrew J. Lawson, MD, FACR has been inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Radiology (ACR). The induction took place at a formal convoca-tion ceremony during the recent 87th Annual Meeting and Chapter Leadership

conference May, 2010 in Washington, DC.

One of the highest ways of formally recognizing members for exceptional achievement in the radiology profession is by elevation to the honor of Fellow of the American Col-lege of Radiology. ACR Fellows are members who have distinguished themselves with a history of service to the College, through organized radiology, teaching or research. The honor of Fellow is given to those with truly distinctive accomplishments beyond the high threshold of achievement expected of all College members. Only 10% of active College members have been awarded this honor. DRA also has two other physicians that have received the honor of Fellow, Gerald Berg, MD, FACR and Eric Hyson, MD, FACR.

Dr. Lawson completed his Radiology Residency and a Fellow-ship in Nuclear Medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital. He is board certified in Nuclear Medicine and Nuclear Cardiology, the Director of Nuclear Medicine at Waterbury Hospital and is cur-rently serving as the President and Councilor of the Radiology Society of Connecticut. Dr. Lawson is an avid cyclist and a huge Grateful Dead fan. We are all very proud that he is part of the DRA team and we congratulate him on his accomplishments.

Interventional Radiology At DRA

Interventional radiology is a subspecialty of radiology in which minimally invasive procedures are performed using image guidance. The advancements in radiological imaging

together with innovations in instrumentation have led to a rapid development in interventional procedures. Using x-rays, MRIs, ultrasounds and other imaging technologies, interventional radiologist make tiny incisions to guide needles, catheters and other devices into the body. Conventional surgery uses larger incisions so recovery time is longer. Interventional radiology procedures generally mean faster recovery times and there is a reduced chance of infection.

Endovenous laser treatment of varicose veins is one of the new uses of Interventional Radiology that is currently performed at The Connecticut Center for Advanced Vein Therapy by Drs. Belcher and Hyson. Under ultrasound guidance a small thin fiber is inserted into the vein and then laser energy is delivered through the fiber, into the vein, causing the vein to close. The Vein Center, is located in Middlebury at the Turnpike Office Park in the DRA Middlebury Office. Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is another Interventional Radiological procedure that is a minimally invasive option that preserves the uterus and greatly reduces recovery times compared to surgical procedures. UFE is not for everyone and should be discussed with your OB-GYN or primary care physician. DRA has three Interventional Radiologists, Duncan Belcher, MD, Eric Hyson, MD, FACR and Marco Verga, MD. All three DRA physicians completed their Radiology Residency at Yale New Haven Hospital and have a Special Certification in Vascular and Interventional Radiology. Dr. Belcher received a Fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology from Yale New Haven Hospital and is the current Director of Interventional Radiology at Waterbury Hospital. Dr. Verga received his Fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at New York Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering and he is the Executive Managing Member at DRA. Dr. Eric Hyson holds a Teaching Appointment at Yale University where his radiology teaching conferences focus on the broad view of radiology. He is also the Director of Mammography at Waterbury Hospital.

DRA’s TOP DOCS!

E very April Connecticut Magazine features Connecticut’s “Top Doctors.” This year the magazine sent out more than 5,000 questionnaires to doctors statewide and asked

them to recommend a doctor (other than themselves) to whom they would send a loved one for care. This year radiology was included in the group of specialties and DRA is proud to have two of our doctors on the list. Drs. Carter and Hyson are part of the nine-member team at DRA that work in close collaboration with colleagues who have specialized training in all their aspects of diagnostic imaging including x-ray, computerized tomography (CAT Scan), MRI, nuclear

medicine, ultrasound and interventional radiology.

Dr. Anthony Carter graduated from the Medical School of Wisconsin, did his fellowship in ultrasound and computerized tomography at Yale-New Haven Hospital and is currently chief of ultrasound at Waterbury Hospital. He is genuinely compassionate to his patients and possesses a calming gentleness that is very reassuring in patient care.

Dr Eric Hyson is an associate clinical professor at the Yale University School of Medicine, where he did his own residency in diagnostic radiology. He holds a Special Certification in Vascular and Interventional Radiology and is the chief of

mammography at Waterbury Hospital. There is not a person who has met Dr. Hyson that does not

love and respect him.

Leever Cancer Center Welcomes New Staff Member

The Leever Cancer Center is pleased to announce the addition of Janice Knob, RN, BSN, CRN, Breast Health Navigator to the already wonderful staff at the Center. Janice comes to the Leever Cancer Center with 30 years of professional nursing experience and is ready to help patients cope with

their breast cancer diagnosis.

Janice’s primary role is to provide education – helping patients work with their doctors to understand the details of their personal treatment plans. By following up with patients on an individual basis, Janice will help ensure that appointments are kept and that patients are given that extra measure of support.
