Introduction

This report provides a survey of government services at every level of government in Iowa. It lists these public services and categorizes each service by the level of government that provides it. The purposes of this survey are to provide information about government service objectives and responsibilities and to promote an understanding of the relationships between government entities and programs within and across sectors. For this report, services were identified using various sources, including the State of Iowa’s “Government Directory Services List” and county, city, and district budget accounts. When possible, services are identified as accessible to citizens “in-person”, “online”, or through both formats. While many services available online can be accessed in-person if a citizen seeks out the host government’s offices or staff, those identified as accessible online are generally available by seeking out the service on the internet and managed or engaged with via a web-based portal. Clients for government-provided services can include residents, non-residents, and other governments. This survey is subject to important limitations. For example, while the survey provides a useful summary of the range of public services available in Iowa, for this reason it does not describe in detail the variation in service formats and delivery methods within each type of service or in every location. Although the report aims to be as comprehensive as possible, it is necessarily general in nature. It is, therefore, not all-encompassing and the information it provides should be seen as somewhat preliminary.
