TEXANS DRAFT BASICS

HOUSTON TEXANS 2012 DRAFT SELECTIONS

The Houston Texans will participate in the franchise’s 11th NFL Draft Thursday, April 26, through Saturday, April 28. Houston has eight picks in the Draft, two in the fourth round and one each in every other round. The Texans have the 26th overall pick in the fi rst round and will continue

on Day 2 of the draft with the 26th in the second round (58th overall) and the 13th pick in the third round (76th overall). Houston has the fourth (99th overall) and 26th (121st) selections of the fourth round, the 26th selections in the fi fth (161st), sixth (195th) and seventh (233rd) rounds on Day 3. Houston acquired it’s third-round selection and fi rst pick in the fourth

round as part of the DeMeco Ryans trade with Philadelphia in March. Houston has a solid Draft history, having selected seven players who

have gone on to participate in Pro Bowls since 2002. Four of those Pro Bowlers have been selected since head coach Gary Kubiak took the reins in 2006. While Houston is relatively young as a franchise, a strong trend has

already been set regarding its fi rst round draft picks. Ten of Houston’s 11 fi rst round draft selections have gone on to start 14 or more games as a rookie with the franchise. Nine have started every game as a rookie, including current Texans WR Andre Johnson (2003), LT Duane Brown (2008), LB Brian Cushing (2009), CB Kareem Jackson (2010) and the 2011 11th overall draft pick, DE J.J. Watt.

A total of 32 compensatory choices in the 2012 NFL Draft have been awarded to 15 teams. Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more

or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. The Texans do not have a compensatory choice in the 2012 Draft but can likely expect com-pensatory picks in 2013 with the loss of players like Mario Williams, Ja-son Allen and Joel Dreessen. The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensa-

tory free agents up to a maximum of four. The 32 compensatory choices will supplement the 221 choices in the seven rounds of the 2012 NFL Draft. This year, the compensatory picks will be positioned within the third

through seventh rounds based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost.Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on sal-

ary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula. Three clubs this year (Atlanta, San Diego and Buffalo) will each receive

a compensatory pick even though they did not suffer a net loss of com-pensatory free agents last year. Under the formula, the compensatory free agents lost by these clubs were ranked higher than the ones they signed (by a specifi ed point differential based upon salary and perfor-mance).Thirty compensatory picks were awarded to clubs based upon the com-

pensatory pick formula. By rule, two additional choices were awarded at the end of the seventh round to bring the total number of compensatory selections to 32, equaling the number of NFL clubs. The two additional picks were awarded to St. Louis and Indianapolis based upon the 2012 draft selection order.

2012 HOUSTON TEXANS REGULAR SEASON SCHEDULE NOTES

Date Opponent All-Time Series Note Sept. 9 Miami 6-0-0 Houston looks to remain undefeated in the all-time series. All but last year’s meeting between the two teams

has been decided by a touchdown or less, including three decided in the fi nal minute of the game. Sept. 16 at Jacksonville 11-9-0 Texans have never won consecutive games at EverBank Field but will have the fi rst chance to do so since

2007. Seven of the 10 road matchups have been decided by a touchdown or less. Sept. 23 at Denver 1-2-0 Houston is looking for its fi rst win in the Mile High City and its fi rst win against Broncos QB Peyton Manning

on the road. The Texans squandered a 23-10 fourth-quarter lead in their last trip to Denver, a 24-23 loss the day after Christmas, 2010.

Sept. 30 Tennessee 6-14-0 Four of the last fi ve meetings between the division rivals at Reliant Stadium have been decided by three points or less.

Oct. 8 at N.Y. Jets 0-5-0 The Texans’ closest brush with victory in the series came in a 30-27 loss on the road in 2010. Jets QB Mark Sanchez marched the home team 72 yards in 45 seconds and hit Santonio Holmes with a 6-yard scoring strike with 10 seconds remaining for the winning score.

Oct. 14 Green Bay 1-1-0 Reigning NFL MVP QB Aaron Rodgers will make his fi rst trip to Reliant Stadium. The last time the Texans and Packers met in Houston was a dramatic Sunday night affair in 2004 that ended with Ryan Longwell’s 24-yard fi eld goal as time expired for a 16-13 Green Bay win.

Oct. 21 Baltimore 0-5-0 Houston is still looking for its fi rst win against Baltimore and redemption from a pair of losses last season, including a 20-13 loss in the AFC Divisional playoff. Houston RB Arian Foster (4,061) and Baltimore RB Ray Rice (3,844) have produced more yards from scrimmage since 2010 than any other players in the NFL.

Nov. 4 Buffalo 2-3-0 Houston plays host to Buffalo for the fi rst time since 2006 and has never posted a win against the Bills at Reliant Stadium. The Texans No. 1 overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, Buffalo DE Mario Williams, will play his fi rst game at Reliant Stadium on the opposing sideline.

Nov. 11 at Chicago 2-0-0 The Texans head back to the Windy City for the fi rst time since 2004, a 24-5 Texans’ win. Nov. 18 Jacksonville 11-9-0 Head coach Gary Kubiak is 5-1 all-time at home against the Jaguars since taking over in 2006. Houston has

averaged 156.3 yards rushing per game and 30.2 points per game in that time. Nov. 22 at Detroit 1-1-0 Houston set a franchise record for time of possession the last time these teams met, a 28-21 Houston win

in which the team held the ball for 40:04. Dec. 2 at Tennessee 6-14-0 Houston has won two of the last three meetings at LP Field, without allowing a sack or committing a turn-

over in either win in 2009 and 2011. Dec. 10 at New England 1-2-0 New England’s last two regular season home losses have come against teams that went on to win the

Super Bowl: Pittsburgh (Nov. 30, 2008) and the New York Giants (Nov. 6, 2011). New England is 25-1 at home since its loss to Pittsburgh. Texans fell 40-7 in their only visit to New England on Dec. 17, 2006.

Dec. 16 Indianapolis 3-17-0 Houston has won its last two meetings at Reliant Stadium against the Colts, on Kickoff Weekend in 2010 and 2011. The Texans have had a 100-yard rusher in each of the last four meetings with Indianapolis, including three 100-yard performances by RB Arian Foster.

Dec. 23 Minnesota 0-2-0 The Texans and Vikings also meet in the preseason. Minnesota’s last visit to Reliant Stadium saw Houston erase a 14-point fourth-quarter defi cit before losing 34-28 in overtime. TE Owen Daniels set career highs with 11 receptions for 133 yards in a 28-21 loss to the Vikings in 2008.

Dec. 30 at Indianapolis 3-17-0 Houston is still in search of its fi rst win at Indianapolis. The Texans defense hasn’t held the Colts to less than 300 yards of total offense on the road since 2002.

Prime Time/National TV Notes• The Texans play a team-record fi ve games on national television, sur-

passing the previous high of three nationally-televised games in 2010.• The Texans will play on Thanksgiving Day for the fi rst time in team his-

tory when they travel to Detroit on Nov. 22.• Houston plays four prime-time games this season, with two Sunday

night games and two on Monday night. The Texans have played 11 prime-time games in team history and are 3-8 in those contests, includ-ing 2-5 under head coach Gary Kubiak.

• The Texans debut on NBC’s Sunday Night Football on Oct. 14 vs. Green Bay. Houston also plays at Chicago on Sunday night, Nov. 11.

• Houston will play on ESPN’s Monday Night Football twice this season: at the New York Jets on Oct. 8 and at New England on Dec. 10. The Texans are 1-3 on Monday Night Football in team history.

• The Texans will play three prime-time games on the road this season. Houston is 0-3 in prime-time road games with the previous appear-ances coming in a 42-10 Sunday night loss at Seattle in 2005, a 30-17 Monday night loss at Indianapolis in 2010 and a 19-16 loss at India-napolis on Thursday night last year.

• The 11:30 a.m. CST kick time for Houston’s Thanksgiving Day game at Detroit will be the earliest kickoff time in team history.

• Including preseason play, Houston will play six nationally-televised games this season. The Texans also travel to New Orleans in Week 3 to face the Saints in a game broadcast nationally by CBS.

Home and Away Notes• Houston opens at home for the eighth time in 11 years and the fourth

year in a row. The Texans have opened at home in fi ve of head coach Gary Kubiak’s six seasons. Kubiak is 3-3 in season openers and 0-1 when opening on the road (at Pittsburgh, 2007).

• The Texans end the season on the road for just the second time in team history and the fi rst time since 2005. The Texans had previously closed the year at home in every season under head coach Gary Ku-biak. Kubiak is 5-1 in season fi nales.

• For the third consecutive season, the Texans will face an opponent in the preseason and the regular season. Houston plays host to Min-nesota in both teams’ fourth preseason game and again in Week 16.

• The Texans will play three consecutive home games in October and November, hosting Green Bay on Oct. 14, Baltimore on Oct. 21 and Buffalo on Nov. 4. It marks the second time in team history that Hous-ton has played at least three consecutive home games and the fi rst time since 2008, when the team played four consecutive home games, in part due to the effects of Hurricane Ike.

• The Texans will also play three consecutive games on the road this season, traveling to Detroit on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 22), to Tennes-see on Dec. 2 and to New England on Dec. 10. It marks the third time Houston has played three straight away games. The team also did so in 2006 and in 2008, again due to the effects of Hurricane Ike.

Strength of Schedule Notes• Houston’s opponents had a combined record of 121-135 in 2011 for a

winning percentage of .473. That ties the Texans for the third-easiest schedule in the league based on last year’s results, along with the Buf-falo Bills. Only New England (.453) and Green Bay (.469) face sched-ules with lower combined win percentages.

• The Texans will play fi ve teams that competed in the 2011 playoffs (Baltimore, Denver, Detroit, Green Bay and New England) in addition

to two games against Tennessee, who fi nished the season at 9-7. Chi-cago and the New York Jets both fi nished 2011 with 8-8 records as well.

• Houston will play seven games against teams holding top-10 picks in this month’s NFL Draft, including two each against Indianapolis (fi rst overall) and Jacksonville (seventh) and a game apiece against Min-nesota (third), Miami (eighth) and Buffalo (10th).

• Houston plays fi ve games against teams with new head coaches: two games each AFC South rivals Indianapolis (Chuck Pagano) and Jack-sonville (Mike Mularkey) and the season opener against Miami (Joe Philbin).

Series History Notes• Houston can stay unbeaten against Miami (6-0) and Chicago (2-0).• The Texans can post their fi rst-ever wins against Baltimore (0-6 all time,

0-5 regular season), Minnesota (0-2) and the New York Jets (0-5).• Houston will be looking to take the series lead against two NFC North

teams. The Texans are tied with both Detroit and Green Bay at one win apiece in each series.

• The Texans can even their all-time series with Buffalo (Bills lead 3-2), Denver (Broncos lead 2-1) and New England (Patriots lead 2-1).

AFC South Notes• The Texans close the season against a divisional opponent for the

sixth time in franchise history and the third year in a row. Houston is 2-3 in season fi nales against AFC South opponents, including last year’s 23-22 loss vs. Tennessee.

• Houston’s cumulative record against division opponents is 20-40 all-time after posting a 4-2 division record in 2011. The Texans are 11-9 against Jacksonville, 6-14 versus Tennessee and 3-17 against India-napolis.

• Houston ends the regular season against Indianapolis for the second time in team history. The Texans fell to the Colts 20-17 to close the 2003 season.

• The Texans and Titans have split the season series in each of the last four seasons.

• The Texans are 7-3 against the Jaguars at Reliant Stadium. Houston will look to win consecutive games in Jacksonville for the fi rst time in team history.

• The Texans and the Colts have split the season series in each of the last two years. Houston will look to win its third consecutive home game against the Colts on Dec. 16 and its fi rst win at Indianapolis in the season fi nale on Dec. 30.

• Houston and Indianapolis face each other twice in the span of three weeks to end the season. It marks the second time that the Texans will face the Colts twice in a three-game span. It also happened in 2009, although Houston’s bye week fell in between the two meetings that season.

AFC East Notes• Houston will play every team in the AFC East for the fourth time in team

history. The Texans also faced the AFC East in 2003, 2006 and 2009.• Houston is 9-10 all-time against the AFC East and 7-5 under head

coach Gary Kubiak.• Houston will take on Miami for the second consecutive season and the

sixth time under Kubiak. The Texans defeated the Dolphins 23-13 in Week 2 last season.

• The Texans will be in search of their fi rst-ever win against the New York Jets. The Jets have won all fi ve prior meetings between the two clubs.

• The Texans will look to even their all-time series against Buffalo and New England. The Bills lead the Texans 3-2 while the Patriots hold a 2-1 lead over Houston.

NFC North Notes• The Texans own a 4-4 record against the NFC North and will face the

division for the third time in team history. Houston also faced the divi-sion in 2004 and 2008.

• The Texans have amassed a 12-12 record against the NFC under Gary Kubiak since 2006.

Texans - Broncos Series Notes• The Texans face Denver for the fourth time in team history and the

third time in the Mile High City. Houston is 0-2 at Denver.• Texans head coach Gary Kubiak served as the offensive coordinator

for the Broncos from 1995-05 and is 1-1 against his former employer.• The Texans faced new Denver QB Peyton Manning 18 times when

Manning played for the Indianapolis Colts and are 2-16 against Man-ning all-time.

• The Texans are 9-10 all-time against teams from the AFC West.

Texans - Ravens Series Notes• The Texans face the Ravens for the seventh time in team history, the

sixth time in regular-season play and the third consecutive season.• The Texans will look for their fi rst win against the Ravens in team his-

tory. Baltimore holds a 5-0 lead in the regular season and defeated the Texans 20-13 in last year’s playoffs.

• The Texans are 9-9 all-time against teams from the AFC East.
