1. Description of the qualification
1.1. Purpose
This Qualification has been developed to assist with the advancement of people
across automotive industry in which diesel earthmoving equipment operations
are carried out. The intention of this qualification is to assist:
• Those who have been in the workplace for a long time, by using the
recognition of prior learning process to assess and recognise
workplace skills acquired without the benefit of formal education and
training;
• New entrants, by describing the learning outcomes required to
participate effectively, e.g. in a structured workplace programme;
• Education and training providers, by providing guidance for the
development of appropriate learning programmes and assessment
documentation;
• Employers, by enabling skills gaps to be identified and addressed
ensuring that productivity levels are increased and business objectives
achieved.
As a result, this qualification provides opportunities for self- or paid employment
acting as a reward for contributions to society by facilitating social and economic
transformation, empowerment and general upliftment of electrical industry and
country in general.
1.2. Outcome for whole qualification
Holders of this qualification are able to clean earthmoving equipment and
vehicles, communicate in a diesel earthmoving equipment mechanics work
environment, demonstrate basic metal joining techniques used in diesel

earthmoving equipment mechanics, observe occupational and environmental
health and safety in diesel earthmoving equipment mechanics, perform basic
metal work in a diesel earthmoving equipment mechanics work environment, plan
and organise work in a diesel earthmoving equipment work environment and use
and maintain tools and equipment used in diesel earthmoving equipment
mechanics.
2. Regulations for the qualification
2.1. Summary of qualification requirements
This qualification will be awarded to people credited with a minimum of 16
credits, and who have met the requirements of the compulsory sections.

Title: Clean earthmoving equipment and vehicles
Level: 1 Credits: 2
Purpose This unit standard specifies the competencies required to clean earthmoving vehicles and equipment. It includes the: isolation and securing or protecting sensitive systems and parts to prevent damage during cleaning; selection and safe handling, use and storage of cleaning tools and materials; and the cleaning of the wash bay after the completion of work. This unit standard is intended for those who work as diesel earthmoving equipment mechanics. Special Notes 1. Entry information Prerequisites
• Unit - Apply safety rules and regulations in a diesel earthmoving equipment mechanics work place L1 or demonstrated equivalent skills and knowledge.
• Unit - Use and maintain hand tools and equipment used in diesel earthmoving equipment mechanics L1.
2. This unit standard is to be delivered and assessed in the context of diesel
earthmoving equipment mechanics operations and should be assessed in conjunction with other relevant technical unit standards selected from this domain.
3. To demonstrate competence, at a minimum, evidence is required of
demonstrating the correct and safe procedures for the cleaning of two (2) selected equipment and vehicles.
4. Assessment evidence may be collected at a real workplace or a simulated real
workplace or an appropriate simulated realistic environment in which diesel earthmoving equipment mechanics operations are carried out.
5. All inspection, operation and maintenance procedures associated with the use
of tools and equipment shall comply with manufacturers’ and company’s guidelines and instructions.
6. 'Specifications' refer to any or all of the following: manufacturers’ specifications
and recommendations, workplace specific requirements.
7. This unit standard applies to passenger, light commercial, heavy commercial, agriculture, road construction and heavy mining equipment.

Elements and Performance Criteria Element 1: Plan and prepare for work Range Planning and preparation may include but is not limited to workplace inspection, equipment defect identification, assessment of work conditions and hazards, and the determination of work requirements. Performance Criteria 1.1 Work instructions, including plans, specifications and operational details are
obtained, confirmed and applied. 1.2 Safety requirements are followed in accordance with safety plans and policies. 1.3 Equipment and materials selected to carry out tasks are consistent with the
requirements of the job, checked for serviceability and any faults rectified or reported prior to commencement.
1.4 Environmental protection requirements are identified and applied in line with
environmental plans and legislative requirements including the correct and safe disposal of waste and other hazardous substances.
Element 2: Demonstrate the procedures for cleaning vehicles and equipment Range Cleaning tools, equipment and materials include but are not limited to compressor, steam cleaner, high pressure hose and solvents.
Performance Criteria 2.1 Safety and environmental protection precautions related to the cleaning of
vehicles and equipment are observed.
2.2 Cleaning tools, equipment and materials are selected for specific tasks. 7

2.3 The safe use, handling and storage of cleaning tools and materials are demonstrated.
2.4 Sensitive equipment, systems and parts are isolated, secured or protected.
2.5 The vehicles and equipment are cleaned in line with workplace procedures.
Element 3: Complete work and clean up Performance Criteria 3.1 Work is completed and appropriate personnel notified in accordance with work
place procedures.
3.2 Wash bay is cleaned.
3.3 Work area is cleared of waste, cleaned, restored and secured in accordance with workplace procedures.
3.4 Reusable material is collected and stored in accordance with workplace procedures.
5.1 Tools and equipment are cleaned, checked and maintained in accordance with
workplace procedures. 5.2 Work completion details are finalised in accordance with workplace procedures.

Title: Communicate in a diesel earthmoving equipment mechanics work environment
Level: 1 Credits: 2
Purpose This unit standard specifies the competencies required to communicate in a diesel earthmoving equipment mechanics work environment. The unit refers to competency in communication rather than the English language. It includes gathering, conveying and receiving information through verbal and written forms of communication. This unit standard is intended for those who work as diesel earthmoving equipment mechanics. Special Notes 1. Entry information:
Prerequisite
• Unit - Apply safety rules and regulations in a diesel earthmoving equipment mechanics workplace or demonstrated equivalent knowledge and skills.
2. This unit standard is to be delivered and assessed in the context of diesel
earthmoving equipment mechanics operations and should be assessed in conjunction with other relevant technical units selected from this domain.
3. To demonstrate competence, at a minimum, evidence is required of the correct
interpretation of five different workplace signs; successful completion of five tasks following instructions; conveying five pieces of information to other workers; filling out three workplace documents and one job card accurately and actively participating at a workshop or meeting. These tasks should be performed ensuring correct identification of requirements, selection and use of appropriate processes, tools and equipment, and completing all work to specification.
4. Assessment evidence may be collected from a real workplace or a simulated
real workplace or an appropriate simulated realistic environment in which diesel earthmoving equipment mechanics operations are carried out.

Elements and Performance Criteria Element 1: Gather, convey and receive information Range Methods of communication transfer include use of telephones (including mobile), portable and stationary two-way radios, e-mail, facsimile, digital cameras. Work signage is to include workplace safety signs, facility or location signs and hazard signs. Performance Criteria 1.1 Documents, forms and other sources of information are sourced.
1.2 Communication policies and procedures are determined and applied including
the confidentiality of information.
1.3 The appropriate means for sending or receiving if selected and used.
1.4 Communication devices are selected and operated.
1.5 Verbal and written instructions are gathered, received and responded to using appropriate communication methods and techniques.
1.6 Instructions are conveyed accurately.
1.7 Communication by telephone and computer is carried out using customer
relation practices according to workplace policy and procedure.
1.8 Messages are responded to promptly. 1.9 Work signage is responded to with correct action. 1.10 Information is conveyed and receipt of the message is confirmed. 1.11 Questions are used to gain additional information and to clarify understanding. Element 2: Interpret job and work instructions Range Job and work instructions include but are not limited to job cards, written instructions, verbal instructions, instructions communicated telephonically and electronically.

Performance Criteria 2.1 Verbal and written job and work instructions are interpreted and followed.
2.2 Job cards are completed including the indication of the effective working hours. .
Element 3: Participate in simple workplace meetings Performance Criteria 3.1 Correct processes for workshop meetings are identified and followed to pre-
determined or agreed procedures.
3.2 Responses are sought and provided to others in the group.
3.3 Constructive contributions are made.
3.4 Goals and outcomes are identified and recorded.
3.5 Minutes of meetings are taken in line with workplace procedures. Element 4: Complete relevant work related documents Range Workplace documents may include company procedures, regulations, safety requirements, induction procedures, industrial agreements, checklists, delivery dockets, material safety data sheets, workplace policies, quality requirements, bulletins, maps, notices, accident reports, plans, emergency procedures, work schedule or appointment sheets, work/repair order forms, schematics, service record books and service plan forms, preventive maintenance schedules, estimates, manufacturers’ specifications, codes, standards. Performance Criteria 4.1 Range of forms relating to conditions of employment are interpreted and
completed accurately and legibly.
4.2 Range of forms about routine duties are interpreted and completed accurately and legibly.
Element 5: Report to supervisor Performance Criteria 5.1 Supervisor is informed on all work completion details.
5.2 Equipment defects and malfunctions are recorded and reported to supervisor.
5.3 Possible future breakdowns, risks and hazards and possible solutions are identified and reported to supervisor.

Title: Demonstrate basic metal joining techniques used in diesel earthmoving
equipment mechanics

Purpose This unit standard specifies the competencies required to apply basic metal joining techniques used in earthmoving equipment mechanics. This unit standard is intended for those who work as diesel earthmoving equipment mechanics. Special Notes 1. Entry information: Prerequisites
• Unit - Apply safety rules and regulations in a diesel earthmoving equipment mechanics work place L1 or demonstrated equivalent skills and knowledge.
• Unit - Use and maintain hand tools and equipment used in diesel earthmoving equipment mechanics L1.
2. To demonstrate competence, at a minimum, evidence is required of identifying,
selecting and using the following mechanical fastening and locking devices: bolts, studs, nuts, screws, rivets, washers and lock washers, pins, keys and circlips (snap rings), in four different joining operations on earthmoving equipment. In performing these tasks ensure correct identification of requirements and finishing of the tasks, correct selection and use of appropriate processes, tools and equipment and completing all work to specification.
3. Assessment evidence may be collected from a real workplace or a simulated
real workplace or an appropriate simulated realistic environment in which diesel earthmoving mechanic operations are carried out.
4. All inspection, operation and maintenance procedures associated with the use
of tools and equipment shall comply with manufacturers’ and company guidelines, instructions and reasonable flat rate time.

Performance Criteria 2.1 Appropriate fastening method is identified and selected for a given application.

2.2 Surfaces are cleaned and debarred before joining. 2.3 Mechanical metal fastening techniques are performed according to

Title: Observe occupational and environmental health and safety in diesel earthmoving
equipment mechanics
Level: 1 Credits: 2
Purpose This unit standard specifies the competencies required to observe occupational and environmental health and safety in a diesel earthmoving equipment mechanics workplace. It includes following safe work procedures, basic risk assessment, and following emergency procedures including carrying out basic first aid and fire fighting. This unit standard is intended for those who work as diesel earthmoving equipment mechanics. Special Notes 1. This unit standard is to be delivered and assessed in the context of diesel
earthmoving equipment mechanics operations and should be assessed in conjunction with other relevant technical unit standards selected from this domain.
2. To demonstrate competence, at a minimum, evidence is required of locating
and interpreting safety signage, assessing risks in a simulated risk situation, selecting and using of fire fighting equipment to extinguish a simulated mechanical fire, and evacuating the workplace through a simulated response to an emergency in compliance with workplace procedures.
3. Assessment evidence may be collected at a real workplace or a simulated real
workplace or an appropriate simulated realistic environment in which diesel earthmoving equipment mechanics operations are carried out.
4. All inspection, operation and maintenance procedures associated with the use
of tools and equipment shall comply with manufacturers’ and company’s guidelines and instructions.

Performance Criteria 2.1 The main features of occupational and environmental health and safety rules
and regulations and workplace policies and procedures are interpreted and followed.
2.2 Tasks are performed in a safe manner and in accordance with legislative and workplace requirements.
2.3 Organisation of duties, tools, equipment and materials is performed in

1.1. Purpose
This Qualification has been developed to assist with the advancement of people
across automotive industry in which diesel earthmoving equipment operations
are carried out. The intention of this qualification is to assist:
• Those who have been in the workplace for a long time, by using the

workplace skills acquired without the benefit of formal education and

company procedures. 2.4 Hazards are recognised and accounted for in establishing requirements for break-down

Element 3: Prepare vehicle for towing Preparation for towing includes but is not limited to switching on hazard switch, installing tow bar or rope and giving instructions to driver of vehicle. Performance Criteria 3.1 Vehicle is prepared for towing using recognised industry guidelines and legislative
requirements. 3.2 Equipment is safe handled and used according to manufacturers’ instructions and company

1. Description of the qualification
1.1. Purpose
This Qualification has been developed to assist with the advancement of people
across automotive industry in which diesel earthmoving equipment operations
are carried out. The intention of this qualification is to assist:
• Those who have been in the workplace for a long time, by using the
recognition of prior learning process to assess and recognise
workplace skills acquired without the benefit of formal education and
training;
• New entrants, by describing the learning outcomes required to
participate effectively, e.g. in a structured workplace programme;
• Education and training providers, by providing guidance for the
development of appropriate learning programmes and assessment
documentation;
• Employers, by enabling skills gaps to be identified and addressed

2. To demonstrate competence, at a minimum, evidence is required of inspecting at least four
(4) components for leaks, wear and damage, replacing faulty components, adjusting one (1) steering box, adjusting the hydraulic pressure of one (1) power or power-assisted steering system, and adjusting the mechanical linkages of one (1) steering system. In performing these tasks ensure correct identification of requirements and finishing of the tasks, correct selection and use of appropriate processes, tools and equipment and completing all work to specification.
3. Assessment evidence may be collected from a real workplace, or simulated real workplace
or an appropriate simulated realistic environment in which diesel earthmoving mechanic operations are carried out.
4. All inspection, operation and maintenance procedures associated with the use of tools and
