Lakeview, Ore. – As of 9 PM Sunday, the Moccasin Hill Fire has grown to over 600 acres destroying an unidentified number of residences and other structures in the Moccasin Hill subdivision North of Sprague River, Oregon. The Klamath County Sheriff Department has evacuated over 100 people from Sprague River Drive and N. Arrowhead Lane. The Red Cross has set up a shelter at the Sprague River Community Center. The following interagency resources are currently assigned to this incident: 10 engines, 3 crews, 3 dozer, 1 water tender, one single engine air tanker (SEATs), five helicopters, three heavy air tankers, one very large air tanker (VLAT), one lead plane and one air attack. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Due to the complexity of the Moccasin Hill Fire, the South Central Oregon Fire Management Type III Incident Management Team has been ordered to manage suppression efforts for the incident. The Fire is burning on private land in heavy timber and brush and currently under investigation. The wildfire broke out in the Moccasin Hills subdivision north of Sprague River, around 2 p.m. on Sunday and at that time was reported to be around 75 acres. Four new wildfires were reported on Saturday, July 12, from a lightning storm that passed through south central Oregon on Friday, July 11. Firefighters contained these new starts to less than one acre. Five new lightning fires were started from thunderstorms that passed through south central Oregon on Thursday, July 10. Those fires were on private land, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Lakeview District and Fremont-Winema National Forest. All fires were kept to less than one acre, except for the 6-acre Butte Valley Fire located near Fort Rock, Oregon, on BLM land.

Two Rivers Gallery, a non-profit, all-volunteer art gallery and gift shop, presents a fundraiser concert and silent auction starting at 7:30 PM on Friday July 18th, in the Chiloquin Community Center on 1st Ave, Chiloquin. Tickets are $10/person and can be purchased at the door. The performer will be Richard Johnson, a singer-songwriter, guitarist and mandolin player, and a resident of the Chiloquin area. Richard played classical guitar for many years, then took up the mandolin after a skiing accident affected the strength of his fingers. Fortunately he has long since recovered, but that incident turned his music in the direction of folk music, singing and songwriting. He plays in several venues in Ashland each weekend. The concert will feature Richard's own compositions as well as songs from the 20's to the 60's. Later in the evening, Richard will be joined by Morgan O'Shaughnessy from Ashland for some foot-tapping French Canadian and Irish tunes and perhaps a Swedish waltz. Morgan will be playing his new nyckelharpa brought home from a recent trip to Sweden.

Klamath Falls, Oregon – Smokey Bear will be at Pelican Cinemas in Klamath Falls, Oregon, greeting moviegoers attending the July 18 afternoon showing of Disney's movie "Planes: Fire and Rescue.” “The South Central Oregon Fire Management Partnership (SCOFMP) thought the release of this movie was a unique opportunity to teach kids about the importance of wildland fire safety and the challenges that firefighters face, both in the air and on the ground,” said Kelli Kuska, Fire Prevention and Education Coordinator for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Lakeview District. From 11 a.m. to noon, children will be able to have their pictures taken with Smokey Bear and participate in educational activities before heading into seeing the movie. Also, various SCOFMP fire trucks will be on display in the theatre parking lot unless needed for fire suppression activities. In addition, Tanker 61 Memorial volunteers will be staffing a booth that pays tribute to the Klamath Falls pilot and co-pilot, Chuck Sheridan and Leonard Martin, who died when the Douglas DC-7 Airtanker they flew crashed while fighting a wildfire. The tanker was stationed at the Klamath Falls Airtanker Base from 1987 through 1992. A sequel to Disney’s Planes, “Planes: Fire & Rescue” is a new comedy-adventure about second chances, featuring a dynamic crew of elite firefighting aircraft devoted to protecting historic Piston Peak National Park from raging wildfire. When world-famous air racer Dusty learns that his engine is damaged and he may never race again, he must shift gears and is launched into the world of aerial firefighting. For more information on the movie, visit: http://movies.disney.com/planes-fire-and-rescue SCOFMP consists of all federal and state wildland fire responders in south central Oregon including the BLM Lakeview District; Fremont-Winema National Forest; Klamath-Lake District Oregon Department of Forestry; Crater Lake National Park; and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) Sheldon-Hart Mountain National Wildlife Complex and Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge Complex.

My 14 year-old grandson, Essen, would like to work for pay this summer and perhaps beyond that time. He is a strong, polite, 5'8 teenager who is very respectful to adults. He could help out with gardening, chopping wood (he chops ours), shoveling gravel, moving things around the house and so forth. He's a great kid, and I think you would enjoy having him work for you. We are thinking $9 an hour since that is very close to minimum wage. Please call 541-783-2584 (Ali Litts) or 541-740-7779 (Essen). Hope to hear from you soon!

We have 2 roosters that we hatched and have raised here - very healthy well fed birds who free range in our back yard. They are about 8 months old. We have 1 rooster who is the patriarch and these youngsters are not well accepted any longer and also bother the hens.

FCE (Family and Community Education) Meetings are the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 9:30. Meetings are open to all. We have a pot luck each month along with the lessons presented by a member. For the location and directions to the next meeting, please call Sandie Bolyard at 541-892-2336. Locally, FCE raises money for college scholarships for our Chiloquin High School Seniors. Money is raised through fund-raising projects such as a Thanksgiving turkey dinner fixings raffle with tickets being sold at Kirchers Hardware; Christmas Boutique at the Chiloquin Community Center; Kaleidoscope of Learning at Mazama High School in Klamath Falls. We are very active in our community and you will find FCE volunteers at many local events. Oregon FCE is a non-profit organization of volunteers who have worked on such issues as improving sanitary requirements in hospitals, women’s labor laws, requirements for high school teachers, and funding for the state library. Nationally, we began the school hot lunch program and pushed for bookmobile libraries. FCE asked for and got money from the legislature to fund an OSU research study on the dental caries problem in Oregon. We’ve studied our county governments and monitored their activities; worked on county and state fair boards to improve their quality; sponsored programs on rural road safety, farm safety, home safety, bike safety, Defensive Driving courses, campaigns to get the drunk drivers off the road, and child seatbelt laws. Current educational programs focus on the environment, children and television, literacy, and global issues. Current concerns include addressing the growing need for food banks, for shelters for the homeless, and for reducing the violence against women and children. Oregon FCE members donate thousands of volunteer hours and dollars to these causes.

Start Making A Reader Today (SMART) – a statewide program working with children K-3 during school hours. Each volunteer works one-on-one with a child for ½ hour, helping them read (or reading to the youngest). We always need volunteers, whether scheduled every week or merely as a substitute reader when the regular reader is unable to attend. Call the number below for an application or fill out an on-line application at www.getsmartoregon.org. It will be the most rewarding hour you ever volunteer! Contact the SMART office at 273-2424 or the Chiloquin Elementary School at 783-2338 or call Junie Stacey at 541-281-9787

Neighborhood Watch – Agency Lake President - Sharon Huber at 541-880-6461, Secretary is Mary Morrill.

Chiloquin Branch Library - The library has many ways to get involved and many fun ways to contribute to your local community. Some opportunities: 1. Story time: If you would like to read two or three stories to a small group or preschoolers, and lead them in a simple craft or activity, the library staff can use your help 2. Summer Reading Program: There are many opportunities during the summer to help out with this very worthwhile program. 3. Honor collections: these are racks of paperback books, magazines and audiovisual materials that patrons may check out without a library card. By offering these collections, more people in the community can be reached and a greater diversity of materials can be made available without incurring the costs of cataloging and processing items for the general collections. The staff would like to have some help in keeping these racks orderly, attractive and relevant. Check with the librarian for information on how to “adopt a rack”. 4. Help with sorting donations. 5. Go through Books for Sale section and tidy it once a month or so. Stop in at the library and see what they need or give them a call at 541-783-3315.

Chiloquin Visions in Progress (CVIP) CVIP operates the Chiloquin Community Center, the Chiloquin Learns After School program, the Writer in Residence Program, and is the contact point for the Chiloquin Area Community Resource Committees and their projects. We have a volunteer list in the office where you can sign up to be available for many different “jobs” and projects. Call 783-7780 between 10 AM and 2 PM weekdays for further information. If you would like to get further involved, attend a Board meeting, held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 6PM in the Community Center conference room.
