RAINFALL CHECKStill unsure of what is happeningwith the rainfall collection, but aftera few phone calls managed to getsome figures for December. We had several substantial falls ofrain during Dec, totaling 92.5 ml.well above the average of 14 ml.This made the yearly total muchhealthier than we would haveexpected prior to December. The yearly total of 873.0 is still waydown on the yearly average of992.9, but considering June wassuch a dry month we ended upmuch better than the previous fewyears.

Lay-By WelcomeOpen 9-5 Mon- Fri

9733 1238

Dear Sir/Madam,During my recent visit to the Frasers(Drakesbrook Antiques) I was lookingthrough your December newsletter.I brought it home with me to finishreading it.While I was away a dear friendshusband passed away. Lyn like myselfis a member of our Muchado WritersGroup here in Manjimup. It was decided that in place of abouquet of flowers we would all sendour sympathy messages, using a floralbackground, card or note. All to becollected and placed in a suitable smallbox to be given to Lyn and her family. Not owning a computer and time wasagainst me, I carefully chose a cardwith a blank centre to write mymessage. When I came across “ ATear From Heaven” I marvelled at theconnection, as my card had Frangapaniflowers all sprinkled with rain drops onthe front and back. I felt both togetherso appropiate at this sad time.So please, a big thank you to MrSpooner for this special poem, and Ipray my using it will be okay by him, asI included his name also.Merry Christmas and safe New Year.Kind regardsDorothy Dunstan

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Drakesbrook Despatch - Helping The CommunityAs part of the constitution of Drakesbrook Despatch Inc we arecommitted to supporting other local, non-profit organisations should wehave the funds to do so. At a recent meeting of Drakesbrook DespatchInc we chose eight non-profit organisations to receive donations of $750each. This is in recognition of the fine work each group provides to theWaroona community and gratitude for their support of the DrakesbrookDespatch. In a little under 3 years the publication as we know it began with nothingand we are now in the happy position to be able to donate a total of$6,000 to the following beneficiaries:-

· Waroona St John Ambulance· Waroona Fire Brigade· Waroona Community Car· School Chaplaincy· Quambie Park/Pam Corker· Waroona Historical Society· Building Fund for Anglican Op Shop – in memory of Mary Francis· Community Resource Centre –Youth Group

Because of the hard work of our former Editor Di Schupp we haveearned funding from our advertising. Di sought out advertisers andproduced advertising of a high standard at reasonable rates. Our grateful thanks also to Mr Colin Taylor who allows us to use theoffice rent freeOur sincere thanks also to all the advertisers and supporters who haveused the Drakesbrook Despatch to promote their businesses andorganisations. Your loyalty has enabled us in turn to put some fundingback into the community.

Book Clubbers our next lunch timemeeting will be at 12 noon on the23rd January. Hope to see you allthere. Anyone who would like to joinus is most welcome, please speakto a Librarian and they will supplyyou with a book. We are a Librarybased Book Club and we read anAuthor each month. Generally, members will read at least one andsometimes two or three of theauthor, so many will have read thesame books. A couple of times ayear the State Library send out“Books of the Month” and in theperiod we will all read the samebook as well as our monthly author.Over the holidays we have beenreading Australian Author LianeMoriarty. She has produced anumber of children’s books as wellas adult fiction. One of her mostrecent and popular has been “WhatAlice Forgot” in which a woman findsshe has lost ten years of her life.If you enjoy a good read and theopportunity to discuss and analysisthe topic why don’t you join us at ournext meeting?Meanwhile HAPPY READING.

Waroona Creative Arts Centre

REALLY REALLY FREE MARKET

The last Really Really Free Market of2012 was a huge success with severalhundred people walking away with lots offree stuff, making Christmas that little biteasier. The Free Chilli Con Carne andPotato Salad were thouroughly enjoyed bynearly everyone who came, as well as theFree Entertainment and kids activities. Many people left feeling a little better aftera reiki or pranic healing session fromBruce or Angela and of course the FreeAngel card readings put a smile on manyfaces. The first Really Really Free Market of2013 will be held on Sat 19th Januaryfrom 1-3pm at Memorial Hall. If you havenot been to one yet, now is the time tocome and check it out. Even if you don'thave anything to give away, come alonganyway and catch up with other membersof your community. Join us on Facebook...Really Really Free Market Waroona forupdates. Hope to see you all there for thefirst market of 2013.

The Emergency Relief Groupwhich is a collaborative approachwith St Vincent de Paul, UnitingChurch, Salvation Army, ChristianFellowship, Family SupportService and Community ResourceCentre for distributing ChristmasHampers in Waroona. The official Emergency ReliefGroup Number of hampers givenout in 2012 is 78. Not only did thecommunity members who hadapplications receive food to helpthrough the Christmas period butover 110 children and Youthreceived gifts. These hampers are alsofinancially supported by PeelAlliance group, Lotterywest,Yarloop Community ResourceCentre and Alcoa. Alcoa also

supported the hampers with fooddonations as well as gifts for theYouth. We look forward to anongoing working relationship withAlcoa in 2013.The work and organising of theChristmas hampers start at thebeginning of the Year with manyorganisations and volunteersspending hours in meetings andnegotiations with suppliers. The above agencies worktirelessly to support the WaroonaCommunity and thank you cannoteven begin to cover the work theyhave been doing and will continueto do, but Thank You. TheEmergency Relief Group wouldlike to thank the Bendigo Bank,Coles Pinjarra, Waroona LionsClub, St Joseph’s School, and

Franco family for the use of theirtruck to pick up and deliver stock. On the day of pick up, Volunteerscarried boxes, vegetables andtoys to Families vehicles. I wouldlike to acknowledge andespecially thank Mr and Mrs Hay,Robyn Norman, Shane Kelly,Michael Woodfield, JayneMottram, who spent all daysupporting this event. I would liketo acknowledge Teagan Johnson,Xavier Deloe and Jessica Hay.These three youth gave up someof their school holiday to helpsupport Waroona Community. Ihope in 2013 more youth willparticipate. A huge thank you toall the wonderful people whovolunteered. I cannot expresshow truly wonderful you all are forbeing Community minded andacting in such a positive way forothers at Christmas.Feedback from the families andIndividuals is they appreciatedthe hampers.Hoping every one enjoyedChristmas and this New Year weare looking forward toaccomplishing new goals in 2013.Cheryl WainwrightCoordinatorWaroona Emergency ReliefGroup

UTHANDOTo all those who have seen the littlebrown dolls made locally and destinedto brighten the lives od AIDS affectedchildren in KWAZULU, Natal, SouthAfrica here are some statistics. In 2012 Uthando sent threeconsignments of dolls( with wraps, bags, beads and spare clothes):1600, 1730 and 1300 in all.The latest consignment of 1300comprises: 531 for Early Education 0to 5 years, 242 for Lifeline and RapeCrisis Centre, 115 for Family Literacy,353 for Primary Schools from WASchool Children, 50 for DlalanathiGroup and 9 extra. These dolls were made lovingly byChurch, Senior, Craft and HobbyGroups, as well as individuals likemyself. Albany and Bunbury are twobig country groups, but the size of thegroup is immaterial, it is the love thatis sent with the dolls. UTHANDOmeans LOVE in Zulu. So far well over40,000 dolls have made their wayacross the ocean to share this love.If you are interested and want tomake a doll, either for Uthando oryour own child, kits are available fromC to Scarp Beauty Therapies, orcontact me on 9733 1484Nola Turner

THE CHRISTMAS HOUSE INLYONS ROAD

Thanks must go, once again to Hazel,Keith and Darren for the wonderfuldisplay and welcome given so warmlyand freely to local people and visitorsthis past Christmas Season. Everyyear your home is a magicalwonderland, but this year the ‘snow’was an extra touch for young and notso young. In fact you bring out thechild within us when we take a walkthrough your home.Nola Turner

When I was a boy on the farm in theUnited States of America we got lotsof flies. Dairy cattle are a fly magnetin the summer months in the UnitedStates. We were complaining about the flieswhen we ( Dad and me) were in thebarber shop. An old man told us toget a fly terrier and a dozen emptywine bottles and all the corks for suchbottles. The old man told us the flyterrier lived on Lincoln Street. He toldus how to place the wine bottles andcorks around the barn.We went to Lincoln Street. I heardmany squeaks. A kindly old woman

CALHOUN CAPERS - THE FLY TERRIERemerged from the house. We askedabout the Terrier. She said I’ll giveyou one as I have got to many. TheTerrier was all black and 15cm long.We gave the Terrier a name. It wasTerror. We set up the bottles bylaying them on their sides and asinstructed put corks near each bottle. What happened next was trulyamazing. Terror mustered thousandsof flies into the wine bottles and put acork on when the bottles were full offlies. Our farm had no flies for many years.Terror remained with us for manyyears. He slept by my bed in a shoebox. One day I stepped on him andcrushed him.

We buried Terror on a hill and put upthis sign “It is not the size of the dogin the fight but the fight in the dogthat counts.Alan Calhoun.

CORAL’S CHARITY KNITTERS

After 75 years theWaroona/ Hamel Sub Branch ofthe R.S.L. Women’s Auxiliary hasreluctantly disbanded. With asmall and aging membership it

became impossible tocarry on and we had been unable toattract new and younger members.

Over the years through the generoussupport of the Waroona communitythousands of dollars has been raisedto provide help and support to ourreturned servicemen and women andtheir families. Most of our memberswere drawn to the R.S.L. Women’sAuxiliary through World War 2, withhusbands, brothers, uncles and otherrelatives serving. There are not toomany World War 2 veterans left andthe female relatives of ex servicepersonnel who served, and are stillserving, in later conflicts have notshown any interest in joining theAuxiliary although the need for helpand support is obviously still there. It is not just Waroona where lack ofmembers is causing Auxiliarybranches to close. There are nowonly 3 sub branches remaining in thewhole of Western Australia. Those3 branches fortunately are thrivingand long may they do so.For all the wonderful support overthe years a heartfelt thank youWaroona.

Keep wildlife wild: Why feeding wildlife can be harmful

We have some amazing wildlifearound Waroona, however there area few reasons not to throw a pieceof bread to the birds.Nutritional deficienciesOne of the major problems is thenutritional imbalances that feedingthe wrong food to wildlife can create.Feeding insectivores such asMagpies or any of the carnivorousbirds meat is one of the biggestproblems as it disrupts their calciumphosphorus ratio (the same for dogsand cats by the way). To put itsimply, meat contains phosphorus.Every time you feed something highin phosphorus you must supplementcalcium. By simply feeding meat tobirds you are requiring an increasein dietary calcium which they are notgoing to easily find in their existingdiet. What this means is calcium istaken from bones to make up theshort fall. Long term this makes thebird susceptible to severedeficiencies, which can cause beakand bone deformity. In addition thisalso means weaker egg shells, putting the next generation of birdsat risk.Feeding bread to birds canalso cause the same problem.Bread is also particularly bad forkangaroos as it can cause theirgums to become infected (a

condition known as lumpy jaw).Alsoby feeding animals an excess of anyone food is going to mean they areless likely to seek out their naturaland varied diet. For example fillingup on bread or oily sunflower seedsmean they are less likely to seektheir natural diet and may evenbecome obese.Spreading diseaseFeeding points become an easyway to spread disease. When youhave a large number of differentanimals coming to the same area, disease can spread amongstpopulations which may not havecome into contact otherwise.DependenceHand feeding often rewards thefastest and most aggressiveindividuals and is stressful for all theanimals involved. It can also causeyoung birds to lose the ability toforage for food and when not fed byhumans they may starve.DangerAttracting wildlife with food meansthat they may become habituatedand may lose their fear of humans. This can bad for the wildlife and alsobad for people. Feeding can causedangerous situations - animals maybecome aggressive and causeinjury especially to small children

(for example when encouragingkangaroos you may create asituation where a small child caneasily be injured by an aggressiveindividual). Also by attracting wildlifeto certain areas you are increasingthe risk of them coming into contactwith domestic predators such asdogs and cats. Most wildlife injurieswe treat are related to theirinteraction with humans – whetherthat is motor vehicle accidents, dogattacks or simply getting entangledin a fence. So it is the recommendation of

many wildlife groups that underMOST circumstances feedingwildlife is not advisable. Justremember there is a big differencein providing a wildlife friendly habitatand hand feeding!

OBITUARY

Marie Hainge (Nee Landwehr) was laid to rest at the Bunbury Lawn Cemeteryon Monday 31st December 2012.She was best known as the matriarch of the Landwehr Clan which arrived inWaroona in 1896.Marie was born at home on the family farm in Waroona, one of seventeenchildren and the eldest of nine children from her father, Charles’ secondmarriage. She went to school at the newly built West Waroona School about1924. She walked to school, which was the custom in those days and helped athome where there was much to do with such a large family. It also involvedwork on the farm such as milking cows by hand in the dairy. She married a young fellow discharged from the Army named Leslie HerbertHainge on the 7th January 1947. They lived and worked with the family for manyyears before moving to Bunbury over 50 years ago. Firstly in Wilson Street,Carey Park and then building a new home in Raglan Street, South Bunbury.Marie was better known to most because of all those nieces and nephews asAunty Marie. Loved and respected by all including neighbours and friendsthrough her warm straight forward approach to life displaying honesty and asubtle humour and a unique style. Her late husband Herbie passed away in 1996 but Marie soldiered on, stayingand looking after her Raglan Street home and managing to maintain awonderful garden and shade house with many ferns and indoor plants. She hadplenty of help from family and her wonderful neighbours and daily care fromSouthern Cross Care and other volunteers since losing her husband.Unfortunately she was not blessed with children of her own, but was very happyto give much love and support and care to her brothers and sisters children. In recent years Marie has returned with family members to attend the HamelHall Reunion and also Pam Corker House Annual Fete. There was never an idle moment for Marie as she had her painting, embroideryand the famous “Aunty Marie Blankets” made in the hundreds and spread asgifts throughout the towns and state.Pam Corker House residents and Raffles benefited from her work as she wasparticularly happy to return the favour to care provided for her younger brothersErnie, Wally and Archie so it was a labour of love. In earlier times she turned todress making adorning her loving nieces in style to attend the local shows.Marie lived in her own Bunbury home until a few weeks before 92nd Birthday onthe 13th December 2012 and passed away at 11.00pm just one hour beforeChristmas Day in a Bunbury Nursing Home.A special thank you for the Delaporte Family originally from Kirup for theundivided care and attention to Aunty Marie in particular the last 8 weeks andalso Vera Pitman, Lyndie Ward and Jean and Sheila Neil for travelling fromWaroona to Bunbury on a day that reached 40degrees at 10.00am in themorning paying their last respects.A Life well lived giving much joy and pleasure helping other family members andspecial neighbours Helen and Marie who were two of the pall bearers whenAunty Marie was laid to rest.Despite having lived in Bunbury for over 50 years Marie Hainge still regardedWaroona as her spiritual home and greatly enjoyed reading local news until herdeath.Farewell to the oldest living member of the Landwehr Clan and proud my “AuntyMarie” was a member of the Landwehr Clan and a great example to follow.Nephew Ken Landwehr

Waroona District High School in 2012

The 2012 year was another highly successful year for Waroona District HighSchool. Specialist teachers were employed in the key learning areas ofliteracy and numeracy, resulting in a huge improvement in those areas. Inother areas, such as: art, science, physical education, design & technologyand cooking, specialist high school teachers were able to be timetabled intothe primary school timetable. This and also further planning has placedWaroona at the forefront of innovation and delivery of the Australian NationalCurriculum over the next few years. There has also been several excellent excursions for students. Theseinclude a visit to the War Museum & Parliament House in Canberra, the SeaExhibit  at Cottesloe Beach and camping at Busselton to hone Bushrangersskills. Many sporting excursions against other schools in cricket andbasketball, also allowed WDHS students to showcase their sportingprowess, exceptional teamwork and good sportsmanship skills.Information Technology has been a major focus at the school for a numberof years and this year was no exception. The school rolled out Ipads for earlychildhood students, worked in partnership with parents to purchaseindividual laptops for students and has ensured that computers are readilyavailable for all students to enhance their learning skills. This year the school's science block received a total refit, ensuring thatscience continues to be a highly interactive subject at the school. Also earlierthis year the workshops were refurbished and in the coming year the fundingis now available to totally refurbish the home economics room. This willnow provide the design and technology students with state of the art andindustry standard equipment to support their learning development.

Canning MHR Don Randall today paid a visitto Year 8 students at Waroona District HighSchool to thank them for their support inorganising Christmas care packages for ourtroops deployed overseas. The project, facilitated by the school’sSociety and Environment Teacher, TerriCallister, saw 21 Christmas care packagesbe put together by students at the school.During the visit, Mr Randall also spoke abouthis Parliamentary trip to Afghanistan in 2011,talking openly and honestly about what hisexperiences and the reality of being in a warzone.“I was pleased to visit the school to see thesuccess of its care package project for thesecond consecutive year,” Mr Randall said.“The school was also very supportive duringmy Walk for Autism fundraiser earlier in theyear, and the students should certainly feelproud of their good work and positiveinvolvement in our community as the yearcomes to an end.”The care packages will be lodged withAustralia Post and sent for free today toAustralian troops serving in Afghanistan,East Timor and the Solomon Islands. Thepackages arrived in time for Christmas.Last year, approximately 10 tonnes of carepackages were distributed to personneldeployed overseas.

Personally controlled electronic health records: Connecting your healthcare records

Technology is a part of daily life for mostAustralians. We use it for banking, shopping and connecting socially withfamily and friends.

It can also help deliver better care forindividuals and build a more efficienthealth system for Australia. This is whythe Australian Government hasdeveloped an eHealth record system.

People seeking health care in Australiacan register for an eHealth record in oneof four ways:-· Online at http://www.ehealth.gov.au/internet/ehealth/publishing.nsf/content/home

· Over the phone – by callingFREECALL 1800 723 471 and selectingoption 1

· In person – visit a Departmentof Human Services Service Centreoffering Medicare services

· In writing– complete aregistration application form, availablefrom a Service Centre offering Medicareservices or from theeHealth websiteand post it to: Personally ControlledeHealth Record Program GPO Box9942 In your Capital City

How is this different to the currentsystem?

Until now, health records have usuallybeen stored in different locations withlittle connection to each other orhealthcare professionals and hospitals.Your eHealth record will allow you toaccess a summary of your importanthealth information online, and share thatinformation with the healthcareprofessionals involved with your care, meaning you no longer have toremember the detail of everymedication, immunisation or treatmentyou have received.

Will my health information besecure? The eHealth record system is protectedby existing and new legislation. You willhave a login and password to accessyour eHealth record, and control overwhich organisations can view yourrecord.

Why register for an eHealth record?· Your eHealth record will becontrolled by you.

· It will allow you andthehealthcare organisations you choose toaccess to a secure summary of yourimportant health information.

· This could include potentiallylife-saving information such as anyprevious adverse drug reactions, or thedetails of the medications you are

taking. Having this information at thepoint of care will help your doctors, nurses and other healthcareprofessionals make the best decisions. It will also mean you won’t have toremember and keep unnecessarilyrepeating your medical history.

Benefits for you include:

Best treatment – As the system grows, healthcare organisations such as a GPpractice or local hospital will be able toquickly view a summary of yourinformation, helping them to make thebest possible decisions about your care.More convenient – You will not have toremember every medication, test orhealth-related incident, or when a childwas immunised.Less stressful – Allows rapid access toinformation in an emergency.Better health – You will be able to bettermanage your health.Sharing the load – If you wish, you canshare your health information with familymembers, carers, or other trustedpeople.

Lake Clifton Happenings

With the Christmas festivities in full swing there was only a smallopportunity of people been able to get together to celebrate a get-together.So with that in mind the locals had a bbq at the community hall inearly December.About 20 locals showed for what turned out to be a pleasantevening with each couple bringing their favourite salads and sweetsto share. The weather was great and the company interesting, with everybodyhaving different interests and stories to tell.Meanwhile up the road at the Lake Clifton Tavern, the new ownersare busy getting the Tavern and Motel rooms up to scratch for theirgrand opening in early 2013.Utilising the Community Hall in January is the Peel-HarveyCatchment Council, with a Property Planning Workshop for the LakeClifton and Herron landholders. It is in partnerhip with the Department of Agriculture and Food(DAFWA)

Saturday January 19th, 2013, 9.00- 400pmThis workshop is presented by Adrian Williams, DrylandManagement Services. Peel Harvey Catchment Council is proud toprovide this workshop atno costto Lake Clifton and Herronlandholders through funding provided by the AustralianGovernment Caring for our Country initiative.

Peel Tennis Academy iscoming to Waroona in 2013.........Cardio Tennis For Adults.......Hotshots Programme for Kids.....

Tennis is a game for life. It isarguably one of the most highlyskilled sports for your children tolearn. To become a good playerrequires good teaching regularpractice and opportunity to playregularly and competitively. Somechildren will want to just ‘HAVE AGO’ and try it out and others will findit becomes ‘THEIR GAME’.

Peel Tennis Academy currentlyoperates coaching programmes atfour venues in the Peel Region andstarted at South Yunderup six Yearsago. All coaches are qualified andtrained through Tennis Australia andBritish LTA. They attend regularcourses to update knowledge andexpertise to keep up with the latestcoaching techniques anddevelopments.JUNIOR TENNIS HOTSHOTSPROGRAMME !

During 2012 a new moderninternational tennis teaching methodhas been introduced into our JuniorTennis Hotshots Programme. Inaddition we offer a progressiveimprovement system which childrencan move through either by age orperformance from beginners todevelopers and move through Red,Orange and Green levels. We alsooffer players who have mastered thebasic skills from 10 – 16 years JuniorSquad training. At present we haveformed an ‘A’ Squad of juniors whostarted out 5 years ago and now trainand play competitively. We are nowin the process of forming a ‘B’ Squad, who will in turn, become the ‘A’squad in future years and so on. Wehope to establish this model inWaroona. The Tennis Hotshots programmestarts on Friday February 8th We areoffering children in Waroona theopportunity to learn how to play tennisfrom 3 – 16 years old with a Hotshots8 x weeks coaching programme in thelocal Recreation Centre with classesfor: 3-5, 5-7, 8-10, 10-12 and 12 yearsplus

Why Cardio Tennis ?Cardio Tennis is a fun, social, grouptennis-fitness program for people ofall ages and abilities. It’s more aboutgetting a great, high-energy workoutthan pure tennis technique.“Burn calories, increase your fitness, have fun, improve your game withthis music fuelled work-out for alllevels”You don’t have to be Rafael Nadal orSam Stosur to enjoy the energisingworkout that is Cardio Tennis!Constant movement is the focus as aTennis Australia qualified coachguides you through a series of funand heart-pumping drills that cater forall abilities and fitness levelsProgrammes start in WaroonaRecreation Centre during March2013

WAROONA BOWLING CLUB: PRESIDENTS NOTES

The break for the Pennant Seasonsaw all three teams in the top four intheir respective competitions. TheTuesday men had a great final gameagainst Halls Head. Before the gamethey were equal first place on points, but Halls head were ahead by 0.1 %on actual scores. Both rinks had verygood games with Waroona winningone and losing one. Unfortunatelywhen the aggregate was totaledWaroona had lost by ONE point. Thispushed us back to third spot, but only2 points behind the leaders. Hopefullythis will be rectified on the first gameon January 15th. The Ladies are also in third position,5 points behind the leaders, DudleyPark, who they play on January 15th.The Saturday men have lost a fewclose games and have slipped tofourth position. This will hopefully bechanged when they play Pinjarra athome on January 19th. If the men areserious about wanting to win aPennant, they need to start focusingon the Team and stop treating theafternoon as a social outing. Toomany close games have been lost onaggregate, because one or more rinksrelaxed too much when ahead andallowed the opposition back into thegame. The focus we all had whenplaying against Yarloop needs to bethere every time we play. Come onguys, we are a TEAM. It is not just amatter of winning your own rink, orgiving up when you are way behind. When it comes to the aggregate, every point counts. Good luck to allteams in the second part of thecompetition.

December saw us have newcompetition, the Handicap MixedSingles. Unfortunately this was notwell supported, but those who playedhad a great afternoon. The event wasa knock out competition, with the

losers of the first round playing asecond game in the Plate competition.Nick Stampone ended up winning thePlate, with Eileen MacDonald therunner up. In the main competition,Kevin MacDonald, Barbara Hiller,Mark Hiller and Bob Waide were thesemi finalists, with Mark the eventualwinner and Bob Waide the runner up.Well done guys, may be next year wewill have more entries.

On December 19th we had another ofour Open Men’s Triples. This eventwas sponsored by Rural WeedControl, which is owned by Kevin andEileen MacDonald. Even though theentries were down a little, eighteenteams competing, the event was ahuge success. Bob Waide had workedreally hard on A green to get the grassin playing order and even though itdidn’t look the best, it played reallywell. Both greens started at about thesame speed, but as the day went on,A green got faster and B green gotslower. The eventual winners werethe only team to win all four games,Arthur Walker from Meadow Springs.Second place with three wins and onedraw was Kevin Lane from CometBay. Third place was very close with afew teams on three wins. TheWaroona side of Bob Clark, MikeWhitney and Derek Smith missed outby just a few shots to from KeithForrest from Meadow Springs. Thankyou Rural Weed Control for thesponsorship and also the Christmasdrink you shouted everyone.

Christmas has come and gone andthe Bowling Club had the bestChristmas event since I have beeninvolved with the Club. Betweenseventy and eighty people joined thefestivities and enjoyed a greatbarbecue meal cooked amazingly wellby Benny Goodman and Bob Waide.Kim Johnson and her helpersprovided us with excellent salads andfor only $5 it was an excellent meal. The hall was decorated to its usualhigh standard by Terry, creating awonderful atmosphere for everyone. When Father Christmas arrived thechildren became very excited, thistogether with the usual Friday nightraffles made the whole evening veryenjoyable. Thank you to all thevolunteers who helped on the nightand made it such a huge success.

I had planned on printing loads ofphotographs of Father Christmas withthe children, but even after five or sixreminders I still haven’t received any.

Sunday January 13th and 20th seesthe Men holding their ChampionshipPairs. If you are interested in playingPlease contact Mark Hiller as soon aspossible. This event is sponsored byCurtis Electrical and our thanks onceagain go to Jayson and his family fortheir generous sponsorship. The Pairswill be followed by the ChampionshipNovicesw and Veterans events onJanuary 27th and then the Singles onFebruary 3rd, so please keepchecking the notice board for details.

The Ladies also have both theirChampionship Pairs coming up onJanuary 17th and the Singles onJanuary 24th. Please nominate forthese events to make them a viablecompetition.

Early in February, Friday 8th, ourladies are hosting another Gala Day.These events are open to other Clubsand usually have quite a few entries. All ladies will be required on the dayto either assist with raffles, the kitchenor even to bowl, so please see yourCaptain as soon as possible and offeryour services.

The end of January sees the start ofthe new Corporate Bowls competition.Quite a few teams indicated that theydidn’t wish to play before Christmas, but wanted to enter the secondcompetition. Please to ensure thatyour team is entered, contact SharyeeHayes on 9733 5361, or collect a formfrom the Bowling Club. We willprobably limit the number of teams to14, unless we can organise someoneto prepare the grass green eachweek. This means it is first in bestdressed, so get your team organised.

Friday night is Family Night at theClub. More and more families arechoosing to relax and enjoy a meal atthe end of the working week. Theraffles, bats and the ‘Jag the Joker’draw just add to this fun night. Manypeople are also choosing to celebratebirthdays and anniversaries at theClub, So next time it is yours why not helpus celebrate with you?
