Thankyou, Petina Archer, for this lovely drawing with toads which
some say is the derivation of the name Tuddenham. A permanent ret
minder of this can be found in the church.
VILLAGE OF THE YEAR COHPETITION.
Well, the letter came at last with the results of the competition,and here they are;

The village will accordingly receive the annual trophy plus a
cheque for 50. Can I take this opportunity to thank all the peoplewho helped to get this stunning result, especially Colin and LeighWilliamson who organised the clear up around the notice board and
playground, I think the village gained more than just a trophy, and
amongst the gains were the times of fellowship when we prepared for
the judging as well as the confirmation of something that we all
suspected—
we live in a lovely part of the world! Many thanks also
to Bob, Judy and Fiona for organising the Family Funday on SundayJune the let. Fiona showed us new things to do with a parachute[!] while Judy had the children running around with funny hats on
their heads and balloons between their knees. The game of rounders
also provided much fun I feel sure this is the kind of thing that
won us the trophy, so thankyou Bob and Judy, you will be missed in
the village. Our next article is about a possible threat to our
village so please read on, and if you feel that any action is
necessary please act!

PARISH CHAIRHANS CHAT .
I am writing to introduce an important subject that affects all of
the village— the Humber Doucy Lane development. Please read the
articles on this subject carefully and if you wish to make any
representations remember that the closing date is July 6th. I hope
to discuss this matter at the Parish Council meeting with full
plans, and encourage you to attend on July 7th, at 7‘30pm.
TEE DESCKNT ON TIID'DEN'HAH FROM IPSWICH
WATKNING HOUSING DEVELOPMENT.
This article was written by David Dufty, Chairman of local resi~
dents committee against the development, For a balanced and int
formed discussion please also refer to the information from the
developers who were invited to put their point of view in this
issue of your local newsletter.l think this is an excellent example
of how this newsletter can help to inform the community
On 15th May last we opened our "Evening Star" to find that yet
another developer was trying to break the County’s rules against
development between Ipswich and the surrounding villages. It would
consist of up to 750 houses, 200 "affordable"[rented], sited on
land belonging to the Ipswich R.U.F.C. and on the Jolly’s vast
field to the West, adjacent to Humber Doucy Lane. The County’s view
"that not only was there no need to allocate large new housing
areas"[up to the North] and that" the traffic generation implica—
tions, even with a new Bypass, were unacceptable" seemed to have
been disregarded. A pressure group in East Ipswich seem to think
that this will help to make the Bypass inevitable, and are thus in
favour of this new development but the vast majority, we feel sure,
are notlIn North East Ipswich there is no park or recreational
river and the Fynn Valley and beyond is the nearest equivalent. In
the Suffolk structure plan Attention number three reads;
1P6"except where provided for by other policies on the plan ..... the
village and countryside policies will apply. Care will be taken to
maintain the open character of the land which separates the vil—
lages from each other and from Ipswich and Woodbridgel" This devel-
opment would bring Tuddenham much closer to Ipswich and Rushmerel
There would be at least 1000 more cars bringing more congestion to
our country lanesl There are questions that demand an answer; The
provision of homes for those on the housing list is a good side to
this project but why use good quality agricultural land that needs
no irrigation when the St Clements Hospital site or the Westerfield
Rd playing field sites are available. Please refer to the attompa~
nying letter and if you agree with the points of objection perhaps
you will sign it, and send copies to

TUDDENHAH ST. MARTIN H.I. NEWS.
We are proud to report that our entry in the Suffolk Show was joint
seventh out of about 100 entries. A great achievement for Tudden-
ham. Our thanks to all who supported our recent coffee evening at
Warley Cottage, raising 67 despite the weather. The weather was
kinder to us for our Summer Evening Out to Siskin Plants at Chars—
field when our members enjoyed seeing the alpines displayed This
was followed by a ploughmans supper, courtesy of Charsfield &
Dallinghoo w.I. We now look forward to our July meeting on Tuesday
14th to be held at Sycamore Farm, Swilland at 7.30pm. Traditionally
we hold our July meeting in a members garden and run a Bring and
Buy stall. This is an open meeting so do come along for a cup of
coffee. Our next meeting is to be held at the village Hall on
Tuesday 8th September and our speaker will be Mr LeMare showing
slides on Impressionist paintings. New members are always welcome.
TU'DDENEAH ST. MARTIN CARPET BOWLS CLUB.
The club held its first AGM on Wednesday 17th June with a good
attendance of members. The chairman gave a report on the progress
made in the first 9 months of the club, which together with the
Treasurers report, showed a healthy social and financial position
which promises excellent progress in the future. All members were
praised for their help and committment to the club during these
first months which has made it the success it is, Two recent
friendly matches, home and away, were completed with Nacton and
Elmsett, and four extremely good evenings were had by all who
attended. In the Summer league the first two matches with Martle—
sham resulted in wins for Tuddenham, sea on both occasions, a very
satisfying result for our first league level attempt. We had two
mentions on Radio Suffolk sports report. A summer evening out was
held on Tuesday 23rd June when 22 members travelled to Felixstowe
where the indoor bowling rink had been hired in the Leisure Centre.
A very enjoyable few hours were spent bowling "full sized". The
atmosphere in this large hall was not the same as our Village Hall,
and we decided that carpet howls benefitted from its intimate and
friendly manner of play.
STOP PRESS; The neighbourhood watch questionnaire has brought about
40 positive responses so far, We need 60 yes replies before we can
go ahead with a scheme.

TU'DDEN'HAH ST. MARTIN VILLAGE HALL.
Much has happened during the past two years thanks to a Very an,
thusiastic and hardworking chairman and willing committee. The
biggest project this year was the refurbishment of the kitchen and
bar room/storeroom, which had to be carried out swiftly because of
new health and hygiene legislation. The kitchen was completely
refitted and painted, with new extractor fan, refri gerator, wall
heater and floor covering. The bar room now has a fitted bar with
washing up facilities. Money was donated from local organisations, the 9.0., and the labour was provided by volunteers in their free
time. The hall floor has been stripped, sanded, and varnished. The
hall committee are pleased to have helped a "new" local organisa—tion which was initially set up after a questionnaire was circulat—

ed to find out how we could best use our Village hall. I am glad to
report it is doing very well, and has benefitted the hall and the
village community! Thanks to many local organisations the hall is
used on most days/ evenings of the week and has proved to be a
valuable asset to the village. I am glad to say that the hall is in
a good state of repair. However it is important that we accumulate
sufficient funds to cover future roof repairs so please help to
support the management committee to achieve this. To book the hall
phone 785268.
TU'DDBNEAH 5T. MARTIN TODDLERS GROUP
We no longer tell ourselves the mother & toddlers group, as we hope
that Dads Grandads and Grandmas etc will also feel welcome. We have
a fenced grass area beside the village hall for summertime activi-
ties which include water and sand playlA small peddling pool is a
new addition for hot days.We take out our climbing frame, mats,
tent, seesaw, trampoline, ride on toys and construction toys too!
When bad weather pushes us inside we have an organised activity
such as play dough, painting, cutting and sticking etc. Over the
past two years we have purchased many new toys and puzzles and have
joined a book club. We meet weekly throughout the year including
the school holidays. Our membership has grown since the Westerfield
parents joined us and of course friends of friends. Come and play [
and socialise too ] on Wednesdays, from 1015 to 12.00 noon,
TU'DDENEAH PLAYGROUND ASSOCIATION.
our latest meeting has brought us a couple of new members who we
welcome, but we have also lost two members, Bob Boosey and Dr.
Chris Cook. We thank them for all their hard work and wish them
good luck in their new ventures. At the meeting we decided to make
the safety surfaces under the swings and some of the other equip-
ment our top priority and have been seeking estimates from Home
Meadow Nurseries. We would like to thank David Lugo for all his
work to keep the grass tidy, and the group who gave the playground
a short back and sides for the village of the year competition. And
now for something completely different .......
DON’T TRASH IT CASH IT
Yes Folks, its here at last. Tuddenhams very own recycling scheme
for aluminium cans and foil scrap. The money will go towards the
playground association fundsl Alchemy, a Stevenage company will
give us 40;: per kilo for cans and 15p per kilo for foil, so please
start collecting now! "where do we put it?" I hear you cry, Well
there will be bins in the car park at the Fountain Pub, thanks to
Mrl and Mrs. Brown, and the village hall, thanks to the hall comr
mittee. The Odeon Cinema in Ipswich and the fish and chip shop in
Selkirk Rd, Rushmore, have kindly offered to place our bins on
their property to help the collection so perhaps you could find
some other public places where we might be able to put a bin for
cans. Please start collecting as the bins should be here in about
two weeks. Look at the leaflet in this newsletter.

LR'ITERS :
I went this morning for my usual Sunday walk up past the
pumping station to see the beautiful Southern Marsh orchids in
flower at the moment on the wet waste ground. I was horrified to
find one of the largest flowering spikes lying picked on the
ground, discarded, In Tuddenham we are lucky enough to have many
small wild areas with an impressive range of plants flowering from
early Spring to late Autumn. As residents I believe it is our
responsibility to look after our heritage. There are many aesthetic
and scientific reasons for not picking wild flowers, and legally,
under the wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is an offence to
pick any plant on the protected list or to uproot any wildflower at
all‘
Please leave these wild plants for everyone to enjoyt and that
includes future generations of Tuddenhamitesl
yours, Francesca Griffith.
GARDENING TIPS
Weeding? Get your wife to do it!
When planting tubs pots or hanging baskets if you think there are
enough plants then add a few more. Plants thrive on company! Boy if
you hoe when you think you ain’t got any weeds then you‘ll never
have any. [ old Suffolk saying ].
Leave the garden alone. [A heartfelt response from a gentleman]

Funny things happened on the way to this issuer Did you hear the
one about the man who helped in the V.0.Y. competition by strimming
around the notice board — he managed to strim a stone into the path
of an oncoming car, breaking the windscreen! You’ve got to laugh!
Tell us about the funny things that happen to you and yours and we
will tell everyone else!
