“Dream Big” Th e World’s Largest Motorcycle

Size matters to Gregory Dunham. It was on a fateful day at a monster truck show in

1990 that the now legendary Dunham fi rst envisioned his one-of-a-kind Monster-Cycle.

Now offi cially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest motorcycle, Dunham is bringing the Monster-Cycle, dubbed “Dream Big”, to the Pacifi c Coast Dream Machines Show, Sunday May 1 at Half Moon Bay Airport.

Dunham’s enthusiasm for motorcycles, engineering background and metal work expertise were the driving forces behind the creation of his Monster-Cycle.

“Th e monumental beast that is “Dream Big” is an astonishing, unforgettable sight to behold,” said Dunham. “We’ve heard so many great things about the Dream Machines Show and are thrilled and honored to be part of the festivities,” he said.

Th e titanic, hard-to-fathom, gasp-inducing “Dream Big” is a custom-built motorcycle weighing 6,500 pounds. It is 11 feet tall and 20 feet long with 10-foot wide handlebars and 6-foot tall, 3-foot wide tires.

For information on “Dream Big”, visit www.monster-cycles.com

“Dream Big” is o cially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest motorcycle

“Dream Big” will be on display at Hot San Jose Nights before it hits the auction block on Saturday, July 9. AC&C Collector Car Auctions will be conducting the sale of “Dream Big” during the South Bay’s big summer car extravaganza which takes place July 6-10. Dunham is hoping to attract a world record sales price. For information on Hot San Jose Nights, visit www.hotsanjosenights.com

“It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, Wait! It’s two wings without a fuselage?”You might just be murmuring these same words if you look skyward, as the Northrop

N9MB wings its way to the Pacifi c Coast Dream Machines Show. Known as “Th e Flying Wing,” the long range bomber will be on display at the popular show,

coming up on May 1 at Half Moon Bay Airport. As early as 1923, Jack Northrop, a pioneer in the industry, was already convinced that the

traditional design of airplanes had run its course. Looking for something to allay the usual drag-producing tail and fuselage architecture,

Northrop believed that a plane based on the wingspan alone would allow more maneuverability, speed, and load capacity.

Almost two decades later, Northrop’s idea of a “fl ying wing,” gained some momentum. In the early 1940’s, the aviation design and manufacturing fi rm bearing Northrop’s name was

awarded a contract for the development and construction of Th e Flying Wing, a plane capable of carrying a bomb load of over 52,000 pounds, with a range of 7,500 miles.

Four working prototypes, built to one-third scale of wood and metal, were produced by Northrop. From this prototype, Northrop went on to develop the full size B-35 bomber which fi rst fl ew in 1946 and was developed into the B-49 jet bomber.

Although these aircraft never entered service, the technology they pioneered eventually became the basis of the B-2 “stealth bomber”.  After extensive testing and many hours in the sky, the Flying Wing project was fi nally abandoned.

Years later, the one remaining N9MB found its way to the Air Museum Planes of Fame, located in Chino, California. Th ere, a small army of volunteers lovingly spent 13 years and untold hours restoring the plane to its original condition.

Painted a brilliant yellow and resembling something like the hang-gliders of 30 years ago, the singular design of the N9MB is sure to catch the attention of avid aviation buff s, as well as curiosity seekers.

From early “Flying Wing” prototypes, Northrop went on to develop the full size B-35 bomber which rst ew in 1946 and was developed into the B-49 jet bomber.

Freestyle motocross (aka FMX), a real fan favorite at the Pacifi c Coast Dream Machines Show, is kicking it up a notch in 2011.

And with the addition of dual ramps, this year’s breath-taking FMX performances promise twice the thrills, twice the awe-inspiring chills, and, dare we say, bigger air than ever.

Adding a second take-off ramp and second landing ramp means that spectators will get to see non-stop action and excitement, with bikes and riders soaring through the air doing back fl ips side by side at a furious pace.

Like the spectacular tricks that characterize freestyle snowboarding, FMX is the daredevil cousin to motocross riding.

“Back in the day, a few of the motocross hotdogs came up with the idea of doing some sort of stunt as they crossed the fi nish line, all in hopes that some photographer would snap a great shot that would land on the cover of a magazine,” explains John Borba, whose world-renowned WGAS Motorsports will bring FMX to this year’s Pacifi c Coast Dream Machines Show, May 1 at Half Moon Bay Airport.

FMX has now morphed into one of the most popular sports in the world, in which daring jumps, twists and mind-blowing back fl ips are just part of a day’s work.

Asked what it takes to become the kind of rider who can execute a 360° back fl ip on a full-sized hunk of metal and motor, Borba laughs.

“You need the memory of an elephant, the body control and fi tness of an Olympic gymnast, and, fi nally, the stones of a bull rider.”

As an afterthought, Borba adds that it’s good to be young. Young they may be, but WGAS’s riders are all experienced athletes known throughout

the FMX world for their skill and daring. Returning this year will be world-class riders Jeff Griffi n of Bakersfi eld and Nick

Dunne of Red Bluff . Dunne is a photo favorite for his “Captain Morgan” trick, in which he strikes a pose atop his motorcycle while suspended in mid-air.

Joining Dunne and Griffi n will be Julian Dusseau, an elite rider who travels the world as a member of Metal Militia.

A fourth rider, Garrett Ahlf, just added a back-fl ip to his roster of tricks. He is also known for his incredible extensions that give the illusion he is hanging in air.

With four riders and dual ramps, this year’s electrifying FMX performances promise twice the thrills, twice the awe-inspiring chills, and, dare we say, bigger air than ever.

Freestyle Motocross Shows

FMX shows run about 20-minutes each in length. Performances are scheduled for 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm.

V isitors to this year’s Pacifi c Coast Dream Machines Show, Sunday, May 1 at Half Moon Bay Airport, are in for a rare opportunity and very special treat.

A NIKE HERCULES missile from Site SF-88 will be on display with National Park Service staff and interpreters giving on-going presentations during the event.

“It’s a great chance to learn about and see a critical Cold War weapon up close,” said Site SF-88 manager John Porter.

NIKE Missile Site SF-88 lies nestled in the low coastal hills of Marin County, just west of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Th e base is typical of more than 300 identical missile batteries that once guarded U.S. cities and military installations as the last line of defense against Soviet bombers (eleven NIKE sites ringed San Francisco Bay alone during the 1950s).

Site SF-88 is unique — it is the only NIKE missile battery in the country preserved in its historic appearance.

Today, it off ers visitors a rare opportunity to visit a complete missile installation and learn the history of America’s defenses during the Cold War.

During World War II, the world’s nations learned a painful lesson. High-altitude bombers dropping tons of explosives –– or nuclear weapons –– could level entire cities.

New defensive measures were needed, and in early 1945 the U.S. Army began developing a radar-guided missile capable of knocking down enemy planes fl ying higher and faster than any gun could hope to reach.

Th e research led to the development of the original “NIKE” missile in 1951. (Th e United States once named its rockets and missiles after mythological fi gures, and NIKE was the Greek goddess of victory.)

Site SF-88 at Fort Barry, constructed in 1954-55, originally housed a battery of twenty NIKE-AJAX missiles.

Th ese early surface-to-air missiles, equipped with liquid fuel engines, could knock down an enemy airplane traveling at Mach 2.5 (two and a half times the speed of sound) at a range of 25 miles.

In 1959, Site SF-88 was re-equipped with larger and more powerful NIKE-HERCULES missiles. Th ese “birds” had a range of 87 miles and could hit a plane traveling at Mach 3.5 at an altitude of 28 miles.

In addition to a conventional high-explosive warhead, the HERCULES could carry a nuclear warhead capable of destroying entire formations of enemy planes.

No missile was ever launched from Site SF-88, or from any of the nearly 300 other permanent NIKE sites protecting the continental United States.

Although “state of the art” in the 1950s, the system became obsolete during the late 1960s; the missiles could destroy any conventional aircraft, but they could not shoot down the newer Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) developed by the world’s super power nations.

Bill Hill, known far and wide as Wild Bill, is one of the foremost tattoo artists in America.

He is also a world-class car collector.Wild Bill will be showing his 1954 Porsche Spyder at this

year’s Pacifi c Coast Dream Machines Show, Sunday, May 1 at Half Moon Bay Airport.

Porsche began off ering the 550 Spyder to the public in 1954. Th ese cars were equipped to legally drive on the street. Th ey terrorized class racing and whipped up on plenty of cars with bigger engines on the track and the street. Porsche couldn’t sell enough of them.

It didn’t take long for the Spyder to take on legendary proportions, winning at LeMans in 1953 and again in 1955. James Dean owned one for only 9 days before that faithful day his life ended at Highway 41 while headed to a race in Salinas CA.

Wild Bill fi rst spotted a Spyder 15 years ago at a show an asked the gentleman if he could try it on for size (being 6’ 6” was always a factor while shopping for cars). Much to his delight it fi t.

It took 10 years to fi nd one for sale. It was the day before Christmas. Hill hopped on a plane and headed to San Diego. After a lot of talking the car was mine. It had been sitting since 1985 so it needed a complete restoration –– stripping and repainting, and new upholstery for starters.

Rebuilding the 2,276 cc engine as a major undertaking. Th e work included adding a lightened chrome molly crankshaft, a lightened and balanced fl ywheel, ported and polished heads with competition lightweight high-lift rockers and lifters, a chrome molly high performance camshaft installing a high output electric fuel pump, Joe Hunt magneto, and dual polished Dellortos (with built in velocity stacks).

Th e oil runs through a high capacity aluminum oil pump and external oil cooler with an 9” electric fan attached. For safety, there’s a fi ve-point racing harness, roll bar with a built in third break light. “It’s like driving a go-kart, so responsive and close to the ground,” said Hill. “I’ve been taking it auto-crossing every weekend and the way it holds the road going into corners is just incredible.”

The fi rst fl ight by the C-47 prototype was made from Clover Field (now Santa Monica, CA) on December 17th 1935, which just happened to be the 32nd anniversary of the

Wright brothers’ fi rst fl ight. For half a century the Douglas C-47 and its numerous

derivatives remained the most versatile aviation workhorse the world has ever known, and could arguably claim the title of World’s Greatest Aircraft of its time.

Estrella Warbirds Museum’s beautifully refurbished C-47 will be one of the featured displays at this year’s Pacifi c Coast Dream Machines Show, Sunday, May 1 at Half Moon Bay Airport.

Born in brassy years of the mid-1930s, the C-47 was derived from the DC-3 family of commercial planes.

Th e DC-3 became the world’s standard airliner, before donning warpaint as the world’s standard military transport.

Recognizing its great potential as a military transport, the United States Army specifi ed a number of changes needed to make the aircraft acceptable for military use, including more powerful engines, the removal of airline seating in favor of utility seats along the walls, a stronger rear fuselage and fl oor, and the addition of large loading doors.

A large order was placed in 1940 for the military DC-3, which was designated C-47 and became known as “Skytrain,” a name it would soon be asked to live up to.

Th e C-47 had quite a few nicknames: Gooney Bird; Super DC-3 (R4D-8); Skytrooper; Biscuit Bomber; Dumbo (SC-47 Search-and Rescue variant); Sister Gabby/Bullshit Bomber (EC-47 dispensing propaganda-leafl ets in Vietnam); Spooky/Puff the Magic Dragon (AC-47 Gunship); Dowager Dutchess; Old Methuselah; Th e Placid Plodder; Dizzy Th ree; Old Bucket Seats; Duck; Dak; Dakleton (South African C-47s which replaced their Avro Shackletons), or the Vomit Comet (nickname used by US Army paratroops during the Normandy invasion.)

Over 13,000 aircraft were built, under various confi gurations, by multiple manufacturers in multiple countries.

Th e museum’s N47SJ is one of 64 registered by the FAA and there are approximately 300 still fl ying in the world.

Th is particular C-47B has seen service in the US Army Air Corp, then with the Belgium, French, and Israeli Air Forces prior to landing in Canada.

After sitting silent for six years, the Wonder Boys of the restoration crew went to Canada, fi red it up and fl ew it home to Paso Robles.

Prior to leaving Canada, it had a total of 9,420 fl ight hours. She returned to fl ight status August 1st, 2009.

e Douglas C-47 and its numerous derivatives could arguably claim the title of World’s Greatest Aircraft of its time.

The Military Vehicle Technology Foundation (MVTF) will be showing one of its iconic military vehicles at the Pacifi c Coast Dream

Machines Show, May 1 at Half Moon Ba Airport. With the largest private collection of military

vehicles in the world at its disposal in nearby Portola Valley, the membership of MVTF is delighted to support a world-class event honoring mechanical marvels of all shapes and sizes.

Th e MVTF display will prominently feature the 1944 M16 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage.

Th e M16 is the anti-aircraft version of the famous M3 half-track of World War II and was used by the U.S. Army from late 1943 until the mid-1950s.

Equipped with four M2 .50 caliber machine guns in a fully rotating turret, up to 1,000 rounds a minute could be fi red at ranges out to a 1,000 or more yards while the vehicle itself could achieve speeds of up to 45 miles per hour.

Highly eff ective against ground attack aircraft in both the European and Pacifi c Th eaters of Operation during World War Two and the Korean War, the M16 also proved to be very deadly against enemy infantry.

When used in the infantry support role, the massed fi re of the four .50 caliber machine guns chewed up numerous enemy infantry assaults and earned it the grim sobriquet “Meat Chopper”.

For more information about the MVTF, please visit their website: www.mvtf.org

When buses pull up at the Coastside Adult Day Health Center, some of the 65 enrolled participants spill out for a day of being surrounded by lively friends, caring professionals and interesting activities.

Open since 1982, the Coastside Adult Day Health Center, at 645 Correas St. in Half Moon Bay, helps provide independent, safe, quality living for the Coastside’s frail elderly and disabled adults, as well as resources for their caregivers.

Providing all of this is a staff that includes occupational, physical and speech therapists, a social worker, a dietitian, program and activity directors, nurses and program aides. But others, like community groups, schoolchildren and furry friends, are part of the picture too.

Participants and CADHC are a good fi t. “Th ey come to think of it as their second home,” said Executive Director Janie Bono James, who’s been there herself for 13 years. “It’s home away from home.”

Th e wheelchair-accessible buses bring participants door-to-door from as far as Daly City and Pescadero, and back home.

Once they arrive, center-sponsored groups take outings to local beaches, ranches or historical sites. Th ere are regular meetings of spiritual discussion or grief-support groups, a men’s group that might plan a poker party or watch a sporting event, and women’s groups that might quilt or plan a tea.

Th e center is awhirl with exercise sessions or consultations with physical or occupational therapists, nutritionists and more. Participants might join in cooking classes, a lively games of Bingo, blackjack or Jingo (a geographical game,) or enjoy stories read by visiting Half Moon Bay Library staff . Fine-arts performing artists, including a pianist, visit regularly.

Center staff help with personal care ranging from bathing to manicures to the latest coiff ures.

Tending to other needs is the “Sunshine Group,” founded in 2001, for those who need special care due to Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of compromised cognitive functioning.

Th e center has ridden out challenges due to the economic downturn, which underscore the need for an event like Dream Machines. “I think there is an increased need for our services,” said James. “Unfortunately, the economic times cut into our budget and we’re working hard to fi nd other funding. Th at’s why this event is critical to the center, because it closes the gap in our defi cit, now more than ever.”

As fallout from the economic downturn poses new challenges for the center, serving participants continues as a vital priority, James added. “We have a community and social obligation to provide services to people even if they don’t have money to pay,” she said. “We’ll use up all that money because we will lose MediCal” this summer.

But the center’s future looks bright, she said, with incorporation of memory-enhancement programs and anticipation of a new building on Main Street in front of Lesley Gardens. Ground is scheduled to be broken in spring 2012.

Dan Smith of Dickson, California, owns the world’s fastest Schwinn. The 49-year-old welder has turned your average Walmart bicycle into a

powerhouse by attaching a gas turbine jet engine to the back. When he takes his baby out for a joy ride around town, he never fails to turn heads.

“People hear this big noise coming, they look my way, then they turn the other direction and look up in the sky, then finally realize it’s me,” says Smith. “The look on their face is always great!”

Smith designed and fabricated all the components of his bike out of 6061T6 aluminum. The engine runs on kerosene mixed with jet oil. “It can run regular jet fuel of course, but that’s harder to get, so I go down to the Vacaville airport and buy jet oil there,” says Smith.

At full throttle, the engine sucks down 18 ounces of fuel a minute – earning its name “Carbon Footprint” – and creates 45 pounds of thrust, with the exhaust gas temperature a blistering 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit.

Smith says the engine is capable of flying at altitudes over 10,000 feet, but he keeps earth bound, cruising at top speeds of 55 to 60 miles per hour on the back roads outside town.

Smith and his jet bike are well known in the small town of Dixon, where they can be seen regularly cruising the streets or on a trip to the store. “The kids at school all know me as the Rocket Guy,” says Smith.

The cops may not all be pleased with this noisy jet bike, but there is not a lot they can do. “I’m not doing anything illegal,” says Smith. “There are no California Vehicle Codes about jet-propelled bicycles.”

He’ll be in the Special Attractions area, where the proud owner will be firing off the engine regularly to thrill the crowd. “The engine looks very small, not all that impressive, but once I fire it up your jaw hits the ground,” says Smith. “It makes lots of noise, lots of heat, and blows a lot of good smoke.”

The HC-130 Hercules is a long-range surveillance and transport, fi xed-wing aircraft that is used by the United States Coast Guard to perform a

wide variety of missions.Visitors to this year’s Pacifi c Coast Dream Machines

Show, Sunday, May 1 at Half Moon Bay Airport, will have the rare opportunity to see this massive, historic workhorse on display.

Designed and built by Lockheed Martin, the C-130 is a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft capable of using unprepared runways for takeoff s and landings.

Th e C-130 was originally designed as a troop, medical evacuation, and cargo transport aircraft.

Th e versatile airframe has found uses in a variety of other roles, including as a gunship (AC-130), for airborne assault, search and rescue, scientifi c research support, weather reconnaissance, aerial refueling, maritime patrol and aerial fi refi ghting.

It is the main tactical airlifter for many military forces worldwide.

Over 40 models and variants of the Hercules serve with more than 60 nations.

During its years of service, the Hercules family has participated in countless military, civilian and humanitarian aid operations.

Th e family has the longest continuous production run of any military aircraft in history.

In 2007, the C-130 became the fi fth aircraft—after the English Electric Canberra, B-52 Stratofortress, Tupolev Tu-95, and KC-135 Stratotanker—to mark 50 years of continuous use with its original primary customer, in this case, the United States Air Force.

Th e C-130 is also the only military aircraft to remain in continuous production for 50 years with its original customer, as the updated C-130J Super Hercules.
