The classes are designed to help children learn how to grow food naturally and what to do with it when it is harvested. It includes lessons in Composting, Pollination, understanding of the root and stem systems, and natural ways of maintaining healthy plants without the use of chemicals.

Once they have planted all their seedlings, the focus shifts to the health benets of fresh fruits & vegetables and how to use them. Lessons include juicing, dehydration, canning and food preservation, raw foods and cooked foods.

Classes are held in the fall as soon as classes resume from summer break and end with the presentation of certicates of achievement the 2nd week in December. Classes are also held in February through May to complete Florida's growing cycle.

30th Anniversary of Service

to the Community1987-2017

1987 – 2000: Organized by the Boynton Clergy in 1987 to provide basic human needs – food, shelter and financial assistance. Volunteer-run organiza-tion and self funded. Budget never exceeded more than $2,000 annually.

2000 – 2007 : • It wasn’t until 2000 that the CCC hired an executive director • 2003 “Faith in Action” 3-year Grant received from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation • Garnered financial grant support from City of Boynton Beach and CRA • Largely self-funded thru fundraising activities

2007 – 2010 : • Completed 7-yr study, funded by the Lattner Foundation, identifying the root cause for needed emergency services, and found that 32% are debilitated by a nutrition related disease to such a point they could no longer work. • CCC began to restructure existing programs based on a belief that the lack of access to sustainable healthy & affordable food was certainly one of the root causes in the poverty cycle. • CCC initialized it Economic Development Concept addressing the concept of “Creating A Healthier Community” through Green Markets, culinary business development centers, nutrition education, urban farming, & food preservation

2015 – 2017In 2015 the Jim Moran Foundation provided CCC’s first large grant for capacity building which we used for capital, stang and also to identify additional resources to help address programmatic development andsustainability.

CCC is UNIQUE because of the integration of economic development & social service programs: Eco Dev programs include an Urban Farming Project, a culinary business development center, culinary job training, nutrition education, food preservation and children’s gardening classes, and acooperative market center.

Social service programs include homeless outreach, Emergency Food Shelter & Financial Assistance, food pantry and mass food distribution, and our signature social service program: The Senior Caregiving Program which helps seniors to age in place.

Senior Veggie Mobile

CCC provides services to over 1,000 seniors in Palm Beach County. However, in our target area called the "Heart of

Boynton," CCC has 274 frail and elderly that are shut-in and nd it dicult to get to us for services.

Our case managers either harvest produce from our Urban Farming Project, or purchase from local Boynton farmers,

including one of our incubator clients Aaldmon Farms LLC,an organically certied farmer.

Dr. Tim Kehrig, a board member with a masters degree in nutrition, rides from time to time to answer questions and

help evaluate nutritional needs.

Soups made at the Secret Garden Café and prepared meals,"a mini "Meals on Wheels" initiative, are included.

Staff is able to check for signs of dehydration, malnutrition, and dementia, as well as, piggy-back additional services,

including canned goods from the food pantry, utility bills and rent and mortgage assistance. Seniors enjoy social gathering

at the Secret Garden Cafe several times a year.

SECRET GARDEN CAFEa Culinary Business Development Center

The Community Caring Center of Greater Boynton Beach, Inc. d/b/a The Secret Garden Cafe, A

Culinary Incubator Program, is an Economic Development program which provides services and

community development initiatives that strategically promote the growth and revitalization

eorts of a targeted low- and moderate- income communities in Boynton Beach, known as the

Heart of Boynton.

The Market/Deli/Bakery is a not- for- prot grocer and a culinary incubator program, known as

the Secret Garden Café. It is a unique and innovative model that integrates social service

programs and economic development by addressing root causes of poverty relating to the access

to healthy and aordable food. Our social services and economic development programs are

located in a poverty area of Boynton Beach, known as the Heart of Boynton.

The Heart of Boynton has been identied as a “Food Desert” by the United States Department of

Agriculture. Our programs include:

A culinary incubator program to develop small businesses and create job growth;

An “Easy Garden Gourmet Cooking Classes” that provides nutrition education to adults and

children by teaching cooking, drying, and canning classes focusing on aordability using

seasonal fruits and veggies, teaching how the use of fresh herbs and veggies can reduce salt,

sugar and fat in diets;

An Organic and Aordable Meat & Veggie monthly package, using our restaurant license for

bulk purchases at reduced and wholesale prices;

An Urban Farming Project which helps increase the aordability of locally grown fresh fruits and

vegetables;

A Senior Veggie Mobile Program providing delivered meals, fresh soups, fruits and vegetables to

the 274 frail and elderly shut - ins within the community.

This strategy encourages the expansion of capital investment; increasing family income, wealth

and employment; stimulates local economic activity and connections to the regional economy;

and improves the access to aordable and sustainable food centers. This strategy support healthy

environments and lifestyles within the community, and fosters empowerment and raise

possibilities. This project goes directly to the heart of community building and sustainability.”

We cannot celebrate the 30th Anniver-sary of the Community Caring Center without a BIG round of applause for Sherry Johnson who has been the

Executive Director of the organization for over sixteen years. Sherry has

ALWAYS had big dreams for CCC, and she has been working intrepidly to

make those Dreams Come True. Thanks to her efforts and the tireless hours she works, she has developed many of the

programs described in our program book, including growing produce for our clients, teaching nutrition educa-

tion to children and seniors alike, bringing fresh food and hot meals to our frail & elderly seniors through our Senior Veggie Mobile Program and

developing a culinary business incubator which has developed into a business development center and training site for entrepreneurs. Her

enthusiasm, dedication and commitment to the people this organization serves is a huge asset to the community. Our Senior Care Giving Program

which allows our 260 seniors to age in place. She has done all of this while still keeping to the original purpose of providing an emergency food

pantry and financial assistance to many of the people CCC serves. And… she still has more plans in store for CCC as it moves into its next 30 years!

She has worked to create and build relationships in the community and with our wonderful partnership with The City of Boynton Beach and the

CRA has set the course for our continued growth. She is always looking for opportunities to provide better services to our clients and plans for the

future. She has been the foundation of The Community Caring Center of Greater Boynton Beach and without her dedication, passion, hard work

and sometimes sweat and tears, this organization would NOT becelebrating this milestone anniversary!

On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers and clients,THANK YOU, Sherry for making your Dreams Come True!!!
