Drilling Fresh Water Wells in the Republic of South Sudan

2011/2012 DRILLING REPORT FOR SEASON SEPTEMBER, 2011 to MAY, 2012

The Mission of Water for South Sudan, Inc. (WFSS) The mission of WFSS is to assist in improving the quality of life of the people of South Sudan. We will achieve this mission by drilling deep water wells in towns and villages in South Sudan thereby providing safe, clean drinking water to the people in those towns and villages. What has WFSS accomplished to date? Thirty-three new fresh water wells with India II hand pumps were installed this drilling season. This brings our total wells drilled and completely functional since 2005 to 137. WFSS, in consultation with village leaders, installs these water wells in close proximity to villages and towns, thus affording steady, nearby sources of drinking water. Women and children (most often girls) no longer need to walk great distances to gather water from often dirty and disease-infested surface water sources. Moreover, there is no longer a need to migrate yearly to “follow the water” during the dry season. With the building of a well, the community may have a medical clinic, school and other important infrastructure grow within the town and village. How many are served? The South Sudanese government census estimates that there are 8 million people in South Sudan. WFSS estimates that each well may provide enough clean water to meet the basic needs of as many as 1,500 persons. The South Sudanese government estimates that our efforts to date have provided a stable water supply for 400,000 people living in this new and fragile country. How did WFSS do in the 2011/2012 drilling season? WFSS installed thirty-three (33) new wells in the December, 2011 to May, 2012 drilling season. The drilling season is defined by the dry season in South Sudan. Our drilling goal was 35 or 40. This year we worked with only one drilling rig. One rig, the Deep Rock Model 100, had mechanical malfunction last year. Parts and repairs could not be obtained, so the two work teams developed a different work plan and used only one drilling rig. Maintenance of Existing Wells: Every year, WFSS checks a number of previously drilled WFSS wells. A sample of seventeen existing wells in various remote locations was selected this year. In each location the well was in good working order and the area showed an increase in economic development as well as increased health of the residents. At Ahonj, WFSS staff met the county government employee whose job is to monitor wells, know the status of each well in his county and make repairs when necessary. Salva Dut also reported that UNICEF is providing for any maintenance needs for wells. WFSS wells are as sustainable as any water system can be. How does continued unrest in South Sudan affect the future plans of WFSS? The Republic of South Sudan’s recent history includes many episodes of savage civil war between the mostly Arab/Muslim north and the predominantly Christian/animist south. Since the Republic of South Sudan was born in July, 2011, some political issues have occurred. Today there is relative calm. Water for South Sudan has experienced no tensions or fighting.

We are registered with the US Government to be notified in the event that it learns of significant additional danger to our drilling area. In addition, we have cultivated relationships within the new government of the Republic of South Sudan that may assist us in identifying potential danger. WFSS has contingency plans in place to move operations to areas more distant from the contested border area in the event of worsening unrest. This includes exiting the country altogether if the need arises.

What plans does WFSS have for the upcoming 2012/2013 drilling season? WFSS plans to install at least 30 wells in the regions of north of Wau in the region of Bahr el Ghazal in two states: Warrap and Western Bahr el Ghazal. These two states are identified as areas of great need by the government.

Awards and Recognition InterAction: June, 2011, Water for South Sudan, Inc. attained membership with InterAction to build additional

partnerships within South Sudan. InterAction is the largest alliance of US-based international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) focused on the world’s poor and most vulnerable people.

Certification: May, 2011, Water for South Sudan, Inc. received the newly issued Ministry of Water Resources

and Irrigation Certification from the Republic of South Sudan (MWRI-GOSS). Water for South Sudan will work in collaboration with the new government ministry and department that will monitor the drilling of wells. (WFSS maintains other United States and South Sudanese certifications to “do business” in South Sudan.)

Rotary: In April, 2011, Salva Dut received the prestigious Rotary International’s Service Above Self award.

The new Republic of South Sudan is the size of France or the State of Texas.

Future drilling includes remote areas of high population with no water resources. They are two states, Warrap and Western Bahr el Ghazal in the region of Bahr el Ghazal, north of Wau. These two states are identified as areas of great need by the government.
