My trip downmemory lane
TC110816DrivenSignatureClass1
TOYOTA Thames Vehicle Operations boss Peter Manning — he was in the supply/purchasing department when the writer worked at the factory in 1979.
TC110816DrivenSignatureClass2
SIGNATURE Class assessor Graeme Fisheris a long-serving employee from pre-Toyotadays and a former 1979 Hui Mai Rugby Clubteam-mate of your writer.
Back in the late 70’s mythen fiancee, Robyn, completed her
teacher training at Hamiltonand won a first year teachingjob at Thames South School.
I was working at theWaikato Times — not injournalism, but as a printer.
We made the shift toThames, but there were noprinting jobs going at theThames Star so I applied tothe town’s largest employer— the Toyota factory.
I was given a job initially instores and then as a forkliftdriver thanks to my newmate Tori Tai.
We had just one year inThames — but loved it.
Robyn’s family, and now
our family, holiday north ofCoromandel township so forover 30 years I have drivenpast the old workplacewithout ever stepping backin — until recently when Iwas given a tour by ToyotaNZ Thames VehicleOperations manager PeterManning and Aucklandbased John Prestidge, wholooks after the Auckland Portof entry new vehicle facilities.
Both men were on thestaff back when I workedthere in 1979.
The plant started asCampbell Motor Industries, with the first AMC Ramblerrolling off the line in 1964. By1966 an assortment ofmodels from AMC, Peugeot,Hino and Isuzu were beingbuilt in Thames.
New Zealand’s firstToyota Corolla came off theline in 1968.
Consolidated Motor
Industries took overownership in 1977 and builtmainly Toyotas.
In May 1979, when I wasat the factory, CampbellMotor Industries becameToyota New Zealand, although we still assembleda few Fiats, as well asCorolla, Cressida and Crownand had a look at Toyota’snew little Starlet.
Thames has always beena pioneering town. Getting acar factory was a pioneeringmove in the 1960s and whencar assembly in New Zealandwas phased out in the 1990sthat pioneering spirit againcame to the fore.
The Thames plant was re-purposed for a uniquely Kiwioperation — ToyotaSignature Class — as well asfactory fitting accessories toorder on Hilux and Hiace.

Toyota Corolla Hybrid
DEAN TAYLOR
Popular hatch getshybridisedPopular hatch getshybridised
We showed it to you lastmonth from Fieldays, nowit is official — Toyota New
Zealand has a Hybrid Corolla aspart of its line-up.
It is part of the company’s plan to have ahybrid version across its model range withinthe next few years.
At the same time news has been releasedthat the car that started it all — the Prius —will be available here as an electric plug-in.
In fact I’ve seen the model — they comesecond hand from japan and are refurbishedfor New Zealand as a Signature Class car(more about this after the official launch laterin the month).
Priced from $38,490, the Corolla HatchHybrid is based on the petrol GLX versionand is expected to appeal to fleet andcompany buyers as the running costs of thismodel show significant savings over the
petrol version.I drove the new hybrid from Waikato
Toyota — a lovely pearlised white version. An advantage, I think, over the Prius
models is that it looks like an ordinary car.I’ve driven a few hybrids from Toyota and
Honda and I’m happy with the way theyintegrate the power between electric andengine.
It is a bit weird when the car is ‘idling’ orrunning on battery only and there’s no sound— but that may be the future of motoring.
Anyway, I’ve usually got the stereo up so itmakes no real difference.
The Corolla Hybrid has fuel consumptionof 4.1l/100km and CO2 emissions of 96
g/km, while the GLX petrol has 6.1L/100kmsand 143 g/km.
A bonus for hybrid owners is that the costof the battery replacement has halved overthe years — and with the Corolla there is aneight-year battery warranty.
That battery and hybrid system producesa combined output of 100kW with the1.8-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine, througha continuously variable transmission (CVT).
It is a seamless delivery, and there arePower, Economy and Electric Vehicle modesfor more control.
An obvious difference to the standardpetrol model are the larger front brakes.
So it stops extremely well — but mainly
they help the hybrid’s regenerative braking.Other differences include Michelin low-
rolling resistance tyres improve fuel efficiencyand double wishbone rear suspension, with astabiliser bar, for improved handling androad hold.
The hybrid uses LED headlights and LEDdaytime running lights for more powersavings and increased efficiency.
A hybrid drive economy meter replacesthe tachometer and a 4.2” colourinfotainment display screen has been added.
If you have never experienced a hybriddrive, the Corolla is probably a great place tostart.

Toyota Signature Class t■ From page 2
Back in 1979 there were over 400employees — now there are 72 — butimmediately it feels like a family.
Mr Manning explains that thecompany was able to combine Toyotaethics with production line experienceto come up with the concept.
“It’s a pull system and everyonehas to be on track to make sure thenext in the line has work to do,” hesays.
As we walk around the complexit’s all ‘Gidday Pete’ and he replies toeach and everyone by name.
The staff seem as proud of whatthey do as they look in their TV ad.And I can confirm they are the realstaff — and the TV ‘stars’.
The success of Toyota SignatureClass is down to the staff and thecommitment to a better way ofworking — a bit different from theunion monopolised system I workedunder.
It has it’s place, but I believe withan understanding of the outcomes, staff can make better choices abouttheir expectations.
If Signature Class didn’t exist therewould likely be 70 less jobs in Thamesand a huge white elephant at itsentrance.
Also vital are the relationships thefactory has with major suppliers PPGPaints and 3M and partners AA andthe dealership network.
Mr Manning says PPG and 3M areoften on-site making sure staff arefully trained with their products andalso working alongside Toyota withnew developments.
Likewise AA Compliance workson-site to comply imports to the NZcompliance standards.
The Thames operation works withdealers to ensure they have the stock
they require and fast-track any pre-sold models.
Signature Class Toyotas come withunlimited warranty, AA Roadserviceand Free WoF checks, all for threeyears, as well as nationwide Toyotasupport, so there is no room for errorat the factory.
There are 14 steps to pass beforethe Signature Class badge can beadded to the vehicle.
It starts with a quality used vehicle,
chosen from New Zealand or Japanto be ‘finessed’ back to near newquality using genuine parts and localexpertise.
They are logged into the factoryusing a barcode system, cleaned, assessed, given an initial service, passinitial complied, given a fullmechanical service, panel beaten, primed, painted, buffed, re-assembled, go through a rigorousfinal compliance and then have to

Morries on mission
SOME of the 10 Morris Minorsfrom the Rotorua Club pictured atDavid Nordell’s Vintage andVeteran Restorations during avisit to Kihikihi recently.
BY DEAN TAYLOR
L ove ‘em or hate ‘em — theMorris Minor is an iconicvehicle.
A group from the RotoruaMorris Minor Club was in Kihikihirecently on a rally. They visitedthe two Davids — David Owen’sTe Awamutu Space Centre andDavid Nordell’s Vintage andVeteran Restorations.Theyreported it was a pretty fleetingvisit from the group - Driven’stheory is if you drive a MorrisMinor you can’t afford to hangaround if you have somewhere togo.
The little British can made itsdebut in 1948 and productioncontinued until 1972.
It was designed under thewatch of Alec Issigonis (a mainplayer in the design on the Mini)and more than 1.3 million weremade over three series.
Initially it was available as a
two door saloon or convertible, and later included a four doorsaloon, ‘woodie’ estate, panelvan and pick-up.
The initial design was from1941 — so it was 30-years-oldwhen it was finally superseded —essentially by the hopeless MorrisMarina (both rear wheel drivecars) as the front-drive Mini wasalready well established.
It was basic and cheap, andfeatured a 918cc sidevalveengine.
Economy of 42mpg wasn’tparticularly impressive and it wasslow.
A souped up 1098cc versionwas tested in 1950 and couldn’tmanage 60mph. It took nearly 30seconds to get to 50mph — whilethe smaller engined car tooknearly a minute.
So for the next model the cargot a smaller engine — a new803cc four.
It was able to reach 62mph,
halved its 0-50mph time — butfuel consumption suffered.
The Morry Thou name came inthe late 50’s, although enginechoices were 948cc and 1098cc.None were 1000cc.
It was a bit quicker — but it isfair to say apart from being cutelooking and nostalgic, there wereplenty of better cars around.
It is fair to say the likes ofJapanese makers Toyota andDatsun copied much of theBritish design, especially theengines, but they were superiorin power, reliability andeconomy.
A Datsun 1000 was faster, better looking and had moremodern features than its Britishequivalent.
But the Morry Thou holds aplace in our hearts.
It is like a VW Beetle or a Mini— we’ve all driven one, and ourmemories are of the good times— albeit at a much slower pace.
The Commodore VFII is the most advanced Commodore ever built, and
now we have something even more impressive. The new Special Edition
Commodore Black is packed full of technology and comes with unique
black detailing. Available in Sedan with V6 or V8 engine.

Australia’s car manufacturersare determined to go outon a high note judging by
the special and limited editionproduct available to buyers.
The latest offering is fromHolden — the Commodore Black— and it gives large sedan driversa real chance to enjoy all thebenefits of a big vehicle, at a sharpprice.
I drove the SV6 CommodoreBlack from Rosetown Holden —and it was red,
It is one of 130 ‘Black’Commodores released by HoldenNew Zealand — 90 SV6 sedans and40 V8 SS sedans.
The model boasts significant
technology and specificationenhancements.
“New Zealanders have a realaffinity with new and excitingtechnology, and this is the first timeHead-Up Display will be available inour SV6 model,” said the managingdirector of Holden New Zealand,Kristian Aquilina.
“Features such as this, as well asintegrated Sat-Nav, are usually thedomain of more expensiveEuropean models, so it’s fantasticto be able to introduce theseengaging and safety orientatedtechnologies into these vehicles.
“We’ve building real value intothis model which makes the newCommodore Black an extremelyattractive proposition, Mr Aquilinasaid.
My SV6 Black sells for just$51,490 and the 6.2-litre LS3 V8powered version is under $60K.
The 3.6 litre SIDI Direct InjectionV6 engine delivers 210kW of powerand 350Nm of torque through a
6-speed Automatic Transmissionwith Active Select.
That’s plenty of power to getyou in, and out, of trouble — so thenew, clearer heads-up display withSpeed Limit reminder wasappreciated.
Economy is pretty good ataround the 9L/100km mark.
The visual appeal the Black hasbeen enhanced with adornmentsincluding black accent five-spoke18-inch alloy wheels, as well as ablack finish treatment for thefender vents, mirror scalps, grillesurround, daytime running lights, surround and lip spoiler.
Both the SV6 and SS feature thelatest version ofHolden’s MyLinkinfotainmentsystem, includinga full-colourtouchscreen
display, Pandora and StitcherSmartRadio, smartphoneconnectivity, Enhanced VoiceControl and Bluetooth with audiostreaming.
The Holden Commodore hasn’tgone yet — and while it is here itwants to remind motorists it is thebest value drive on the market.
