FOOTBALL WITHOUT MILLIONS
FUTEBOL SEM OS MILHÕES
Paixões clubísticas despertam
rivalidades e, para que sejam verdadeiras,
necessitam competir entre si.
Passion for football teams raises
rivalries and to make them real they
need to compete among themselves
The city of Buenos Aires hold more than 20 professional football clubs and this it doesn’t result in a smaller number if we talk about rivalries. There are clubs playing all championships levels, offering amusing facts and rivalry for all kinds of tastes: the “superclasico” (Boca Juniors x River Plate); the other biggest ones; and those ones between teams from the same borough. Since the time when football was not a money machine full of multimediatic idols ready to disappoint the clubs they use to support and play through a money offer, smaller clubs from hoods were already there and always will be. Not solid as rock but eternal like the wind.
History tells that these clubs were born in the beginning of the 20th century, founded by immigrants and their descendents. As an honour, a lot of these clubs were named by the places that firstly held them. Club Almagro and San Lorenzo of Almagro, Almagro hood; Boca Juniors, La Boca hood; Defensores de Belgrano, Belgrano hood; San Telmo Football Club, San Telmo hood; Chacarita Juniors, Chacarita hood... The list continues. Many others don’t carry their hood’s names but the identification and devotion for their geographic limits don’t reduce their relation with that.
A lista segue.
Naturally later and gathered with the clubs the classic rivalries were born. Their stadiums are shy (really small) squeezed among houses and buildings. Their fields are mistreated by the cold of the winter. The football that they practice is tough, vigorous, forged on the tradition of the battles of their people. Their supporters are fanatics. If they follow their team on the good and bad moments it’s not because on the good ones it is easier and on the bad ones it is necessary, but because the affection is on the floor, on the land, which means that it can be justified through History. The pibe’s club (pibe means boy) is his father’s club as well as his grandfather’s and the whole family’s one. It is his place in the world. In only one word: faithfulness.
As football became professional new categories arised as well as the clubes grew along with rivalries. The number of supporters spread fastly beyond the limits of the hoods and some of these teams became huge national clubs in so huge proportions that that small borough couldn’t hold them anymore. Through the time, a wild emotional state appeared along with the “barras-bravas” (any group of rooters that considers itself respectful has its own “barra-brava”, and it doesn’t matter the size of it though) following what in one hand can be faced as Argentinian football - courageous, sometimes violent, with mad rooters jumping behind the goals in a very hostile atmosphere which proximity of the fence and the volume of the chants give the creeps. On the other hand we can call it “rootters professionalization” and also “violence professionalization” in some aspects. The term “barra-brava” raised in Argentinian press by the end of the 50’s and established itself as a subculture with its own internal codes.
Argentinians rooters are legendary as well as well known beside its notorious modus operandi: chants, tatters, bass drums, fabric bars, shredded papers and flags, aiming a beautiful party and psychological pression against the opponents. If on matchs between them the collision is tough, imagine the situation for foreigners. Truly pitched battles have been set in their muddly fields offering to football - the sport - what it has to have: fight. But the honourable fight has exceeded the limits of good sense since decades ago and became, practically speaking, a bloody fight.
Confusions, scuffles, fights and murders are historical. There is an established culture. It’s a recognised social question and it is impossible to deny that there is a lack of public power on the repression of the chaos and on the maintenance of the order. No one denies the beauty of the party, but no one could keep it alive if peace was set regarding its end. Luckily, the beauty of the party goes beyond the violence. Fingers aimed to the government, therefore.
Nowadays there is not even one father that doesn’t ask himself twice before carrying his son to a football stadium in Argentina. For the lovers of a club, just a few things could be sadder. When passion of football become anything that is not the love for the club, for its colours, shirt, something is wrong as the first sense: the essence.
Allow me to make a necessary digression: violence of rooters can be wrongly mistaked as an element of the romantic football, but it is not more than a pathetic caractheristic from a time that should be already past.
Permitam-me um digressão necessária.

England and Argentina are crucial examples on subjects related to violence on rows of seats because of actions taken by British and inactions therefore not taken by Argentinians.
England has solved its hooligan problem with tough sanctions from UEFA and mainly through the hard and necessary decisions from the unbreakable Margareth Thatcher, the Iron Lady, that took the English blame on the Heysel tragedy of 1985 and organised that
whole shit with balls and conviction. The prohibition of alcohol DON’T exist in English stadiums, not even physical barriers between seats and field. The weight of law is felt and well respected.
Argentina has forbbiden alcohol in football stadiums (as well as other unworthy actions) in a laughable try to solve its very serious “barra-brava” problem and differently from England it has not faced and doesn’t face its real questions: impunity, promiscuous relations of “barras” with football directors, syndicalists and politicians in a mabster practice. Some years ago, a Vélez Sarsfield supporter was killed by being shot around San Lorenzo stadium and the Minister of Justice of the mismanagement Cristina Fernández de Kirchner declared that that was not a problem of the football. Also that that could have occurred in a “tour of retireds” and that that has been an “isolated act”.
What represents violence in Argentinians stadiums and outside of the country is worst: it is a complex game of power, status and money. If football was a world, the current Argentina would hold two universes inside it: on one hand we have the first division, the great clubs, the prime time, the ascension football, the mistreated fields, the shy stadiums. On the other one we have the shadows that project themselves around the first. End of the digression.
What keeps football alive in Argentina as well as in any other place worldwide is the passion of the supporters. It wouldn’t exist any club without supporters, it wouldn’t have demand with no passion. Millions of money make football competitive, attractive to professional ones, practicable to a world daily more financial-dependent. It’s the wheeltime spinning, there is nothing to feel sorry for and not even pages to flick back because passion can not be bought or sold.
Not as solid as rock but eternal like the wind. Football without millions, a practice burried alive and still breathing.
Football without millions, uma prática enterrada viva, ainda respirando.

NYC in sound
and coLor NYC em cores e sons
TO BE in NYC is to live art everywhere you go.
There are plenty of great artists lost in walls, roofs and over the buildings. There are many gifted musicians playing in corners, subway stations and pubs.
I was there to join the Creator`s Project Sessions. We spent a whole week inside Mike Beck`s studio in a loft in Brooklyn. It was a great experience. The other musicians were Aaron Audio and Eugene Hong. Eugene is from Los Angeles and Aaron lives in London. We became friends very quickly and there was a great synergy among us to produce together.
I spent 2 weeks in NYC. During that time I made my way to see Prince live at Madison Square Garden. The stadium was crowded and for my surprise the opening concert was from Sharon Jones and the Dap-kings. Really impressive! We produced four brand new tracks for the Creator`s Project. Besides that we shot a video advertising for Ray Ban, in the middle of an apartment houseparty in Brooklyn.
In each subway station you get out it seems that you are in a different city. It was so cold. But the city is really hot though. There`s always something going on everywhere you go. The city breathes, always awake. In Manhattan I was in The Gershwin Hotel. There was a Baldwin piano in the lobby. It`s a really classic model from Jazz Music.
I`ve played that Piano many times. For my surprise I exchanged many personal cards with other musicians while I was playing. It`s a city of opportunities and they can happen everywhere. I made some really good friends while I was staying there. Besides that I`ve seen many crazy ideas in the streets and I could experience something I was dreamed with in my musical career.
I`m already missing that city!

Realmente elegante!
Sim, as oportunidades estão por todos os lados so give them your best shoot!
