Addiction

• “Addiction is defined as a chronic, relapsing brain disease that is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences.”

There are many reasons why people become addicted for example trauma, peer pressure, abuse of pain medications It is considered a brain disease because drugs change the brain; they change its structure and how it works. These brain changes can be long lasting and can lead to many harmful, often self-destructive, behaviour.

• It is highly addictive and belongs to the “opioid ” family withdrawal is extremely painful

• It’s the third most trafficked illegal drug in the world

• Person feels extroverted• Able to communicate easily• Heightened sexual performance• Euphoria

Have someone around who is not under the influence who could administer CPR in an emergency Use gloves and face mask do not touch your own face it is amazing how many times we touch our face and mouth without know it. Powder can get on your clothes if you are involved in an emergency situation ensure you wash your hands after removing your gloves

If you suspect a friend or family member is using drugs ask the question if you do not feel comfortable a member of the health and wellness team can assist with facilitating discussion Talk about drugs generally within the family circle and the concerns you may be surprised what your children and grandchildren already know These are the first steps by having discussion tonight it leads the way for more community discussion and education Often you would be very surprised who is actually using drugs and not just for recreational purposes,
