Clubhouse News!Thanksgiving week at Clubhouse was a great success we had Forty-two youth participate in the Clubhouse Thanksgiving feast over a two day course! The youth participated in our culture traditions, practices and activities. The youth also had the opportunity to participate in an exercise class with the elders led by our Nutritionist Mihaela. Clubhouse youth also had the honor of hearing stories told to them by the elders.

Interest onlyClubhouse would like to know if any of the Clubhouse families and their friends would be interested in participating in The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program: Nutrition Course for Parents and Caregivers. The Classes will be an eight part workshop that will cover:• Healthy lifestyle tips for you and your family.• How to plan and prepare tasty, low costing meals and snacks• Recipes and food demonstrations • Useful tools to take home (Measuring cups, recipe books, shopping list, veggie brush…)• Certificate of completion from the University of California Cooperative ExtensionIf you and your Family are interested in making this possible Please Contact Paula Davila at the Clubhouse (559) 803-6977

College is Possible & Scholarships are available! This month clubhouse teens had the opportunity to attend the Native American leaders of tomorrow “Embracing our culture through education” At Fresno City college. The twelve youth toured Fresno City college campus and got to experience the college life. The college tour was a success many youth were excited to see the other Native youth from the valley that also participated in the event. The younger youth are still attending the reading room at Fresno State every Tuesday and Thursday. The youth are also getting a great feel of the campus life at Fresno State University.

Nutrition News

The holidays are fast approaching! Another season, another 5 lbs weight gain. On average, people gain at least five pounds over the holidays, over a 10 year period with no weight loss that comes to 20 more pounds.

So, this season, strive for maintenance instead of weight loss. Give yourself a break and take some pressure off. It helps if you see this season in perspective. Holidays are December 25 and 31, the rest of the days are not. Allow yourself to enjoy the day of the holiday but exercise control on the remaining 29 days of December.

Continue to make healthy choices by purchasing healthy foods, controlling your portion sizes and eating on a regular schedule. DON’T FORGET to exercise. Enjoy your favorite holiday treats, but in smaller portions, eat slowly and savor the taste and texture.

Try to practice moderation.

NURSING CORNER

On November 21st the WISE group and Diabetes Class got together for an information filled afternoon.

We started off with a huge potluck full of all sorts of Thanksgiving goodies!

The Fresno State Nursing students then presented on various health topics including; dental hygiene care, fall and Injury reduction in the home, simple physical activities to get your heart pumping and strengthen your muscles, balance strengthening for reduce falls, medical terminology, then Health BINGO to end the activity! The students also provided Blood Pressure measurements and Flu Vaccines to anyone wanting one.

The Fresno State Nursing students are all close to graduating with only one semester left, FAIHP has students every semester to help out Nurse Nancy with our Clients and their health

needs by doing home visits and assistance in the office. Part of their requirements during their Community Health rotation is a Community Health Project. We were lucky enough to have them come here, and want to send out a BIG

THANK YOU to them for their time and hard work!

It was a great day with a full turnout of our Clients, Friends and Families. We had forty plus

attendees and eleven students to fill up the room.

By the laughter and diverse questions, it seemed that everyone had a good time and learned something too.

Let us be Thankful for all that Creator has Blessed us with… CBANS would like to extend a Big thank you to all of our dedicated CBANS friends and family, from weekly support group attendance, to giving of time, generous donations and volunteer services. Thanks to Elaina and Andrea, for the continuous giving of your time. CBANS would also like to thank our presenters that agree to bring valuable information to our WISE support group. Carmen G. with Telephone Access came and helped our Elders with information on free specialty phones for those with disabilities. A few of our Elders now have their new phones and are very pleased with them. Once again, without you all, CBANS could not exist.

CBANS HIGHLIGHT during the month of November… Fresno WISE and Diabetes class came together and celebrated our Thanksgiving, potluck style. We would like to Thank our holiday potluck volunteers, Melissa, Jean, Rosie, Marilyn, Brenda, Mary Y, Sandra, and others that participated

in the potluck, and also all of the CSUF Nursing Students for their participation in the potluck, as well as bringing a wonderful presentation, full of knowledge to our community. Some topics that the RN Students touched on were; Balance

and Exercise, Dental Hygiene, Medical Terminology, also giving clients an opportunity to participate in the discussion, ask questions, share thoughts and comments, ending the support group by playing a game of medical BINGO, having blood pressure taken, and one on one questions and answers with the CSUF Nursing Students. THANK YOU ALL!

CBANS WISE also came together with Big Sandy Rancheria for a gathering of meeting new and continued WISE support group community members, for a nice interactive time, sharing new thoughts and ideas, on Mental Wellness, for our Elders… while we enjoyed a delicious brunch at Mono Wind Casino.

CBANS ongoing support groups for the month of November are Tuesday Tea and Stress Management: meeting every Tuesday, from 1:00 - 3:30 p.m. WELLBRIETY: meets every Wednesday at 7 pm., and ending the last Wednesday of the month celebrating two honorees, with an end of the month celebration and potluck, starting at 7:00 - 9:30 pm.

CBANS would like to share what some of the community members and faithful support group attendees have to say about CBANS:

Melissa D.: I cannot say enough about the positive feedback and support both spiritually and mentally, the staff and unique group of people at the CBANS support group have shown me.

Before I started their stress Management /Tuesday Tea and WISE support groups, I was feeling lost and alone and didn’t want to ever wake up again, but with the grace of God and my fellow peers at CBANS they made me feel welcome and Loved, and I feel like I have hope again. I enjoy the information, crafts, outings and most of all the friendships I have made there. Who knew you can come to a place where everything is confidential with no judgment or medications, without a stop watch or out of pocket expense. And when I am not able to drive, they will pick me up in the transport van that is provided for people with disabilities or have no means of transportation.

The staff truly cares about people especially Cynthia and Ruben that head up the CBANS Tuesday Tea/WISE and other support groups and functions. Cynthia and Ruben do an excellent job truly caring for each of our feelings and our needs… They also take the time to talk to me one on one, if I don’t want to share with the group. It is a terrific place and I recommend people that feel like I did to join our support groups, even if you just want to learn about a new culture or to hang out, it’s the perfect Place! I have learned a lot about the Native American culture, and excited to keep learning about the Native ways!

WISE Support Group: Twice monthly on ThurdaysStress Management: Every Tuesday at 1:00 pm.

Tuesday Tea: Every Tuesday at 2:00 pm.Times and Dates are Subject to change

The MSPI program would like to share some valuable information with you regarding Holiday Alcohol Consumption Awareness:

“Party Planning Tips For an Alcohol-Safe and Drug Free Holiday Season To Remember:

Tips for Party Givers• Avoid making alcohol the main focus of social events. Entertain guests with music, dancing, games, food, and lively conversation.• Did you know that one in three adults prefers a non-alcoholic beverage? Make sure to offer plenty of non-alcoholic choices such as sparkling water, fancy juice drinks, soft drinks, and bottled drinking water.

• Provide guests with nutritious and appealing foods to slow the effects of alcohol. High protein and carbohydrate foods like cheese and meats are especially good. They stay in the stomach much longer, which slows the rate at which the body absorbs alcohol. Avoid salty foods, which encourage people to drink more. • Stop serving drinks at least 1 hour before the end of

the event. Instead, serve coffee, non-alcoholic beverages, and desserts at that time.• Recruit people ahead of time who will not be drinking to help ensure that everyone has a safe ride home.

When the Party’s OverYour responsibility as a host is even more important at this point. Should any of your guests be unable to drive due to alcohol impairment, be sure to provide several options. Be prepared to offer your guests alternate forms of transportation: • Know what “safe ride”programs are available in your area. • Keep the phone numbers of several cab companies handy. • Ask someone who was not drinking to drive a guest home.
