It could be argued that café/restaurants are a dime a dozen but Drum Café, sitting centrally in the Cathedral

Junction, is the pick of the bunch.

Its location is certainly a big plus – ideal for central city workers for a start and perfect for those coming in for a show or a movie in the evening. It sits on the tram route as well and serves as a great spot for tram travellers and a vantage point to watch these historic creatures as they rumble through on their way around the city.

With great parking all around – Manchester and Gloucester Streets, the proximity of parking buildings and free parking on weekends, it is a breeze to stop close by and saunter into the Drum for a coffee or a great meal.

And of course the food is what it is all about. Open from 7.30am through to 5pm 7 days, the first attraction for many visitors and locals is the sumptuous breakfast menu. What could be better to start the day than bagels or croissants toasted with cream cheese and jam or pesto, or pesto and tomato?

Traditional varieties of bacon and eggs done any way you want are popular as well as Eggs benedict on grilled ciabatta with bacon, ham or smoked salmon. If you are hungry then you can’t go past a full Drum breakfast with the works, or decadent pancakes served with crispy bacon and maple syrup or yoghurt and mixed berry compote.

Of course these choices are completed with varieties of coffee, using the renowned Café L’Affare beans, or any of a number of other beverages.

The coffee is presented immaculately, so that one is reluctant to disturb each work of art in order to stir in sugar.

Right now the lunch menu is being adjusted to the cooler weather. Soup is extremely popular and the corn fritters are perfect for a chilly winter’s day. For just $5 you can enjoy a toasted sandwich with a choice of any three fillings – a great idea for something warming and tasty, using your favourite flavours. Drum sirloin, topped with paprika and garlic butter is filling, and you can’t go past traditional bangers and mash – two flavoursome pork sausages, creamy mash and braised cabbage topped with a caramelised onion jus.

Owner Craig Stewart is happy to take bookings for evening meals and is both flexible and innovative about his menu. This is an ideal situation for a group wanting a special meal out as part of an evening at a show. Adaptability is the name of the game: wedding, birthday, office function … just talk to Craig.
