Host Enters Host

Hey, guys! How is everyone doing this morning (evening)? (Pause.) It’s SO great to see you! We are feeling the rhythm here today. After all, you’ve got to Respect the Rhythm. And around here, we’re all about respect.

• Speaking of respecting the rhythm, I have something for us to try. • We’re going to split up into teams of 4. Each team is going to come

up with a unique sound. • Then when I point to your team, make your sound nice and loud! But

watch where I point so you don’t mess up the rhythm. Sometimes we’ll go fast, and sometimes we’ll go slow! Let’s play “respect the rhythm”!

(Host Leads Game)

• Great job respecting the rhythm! Now we keep hearing this word “respect”. What does that word mean to you? (Wait for responses.)

Drumline_Respect_Slide • I say that respect is showing others they are important by what you

say and do. • Now why are we even talking about respect? • God is the all-powerful, Creator of the universe. There is no one who

has the position or power of God. We can’t help but respond to Him with respect.

• And if we respect God, we will respect the people God created.

Drumline_Lesson So I’ve got an easy question to kick us off this morning/afternoon/night. Raise your hand if at one time in your life you were a baby. (Wait for response)

• Not to exclude any robots in the room, but of course, all of us at one point were babies. I can just picture some of you now! Awwww!

Drumline_Baby Pic 1_Slide • Ah, yes, eating spaghetti . . . or swimming in spaghetti . . . not quite

sure what’s happening there. Or how about this one…

Drumline_Baby Pic 2_Slide • I mean, playing is hard work. Just look at you, all tuckered out. And I

think we might have a video for this next one…

Drumline_Baby_Video

Drumline_Logo_Slide • Come on! Look at those dance moves! You guys really knew how to

break it down! You guys were pretty cute! • Now, babies are one thing, but those parents! Parents of little kids go

crazy for this kind of stuff. Have you have ever seen parents of little kids? They’re running around trying to capture every single moment!

• Eventually we grow up. We learn to crawl and walk around the house. We start to babble, and eventually we talk. Now what are some of the first words a kid learns when they are starting to talk? (Wait for response)

• One of the first words we all learned was . . . NO. And “no” became the answer for everything. Our parents asked us to not touch the TV, and we said (crowd response). Or they told us to put our shoes on, and we said (crowd response).

• The truth is that nobody had to teach us how to be disrespectful to our parents. We knew how to do that all on our own. And it continues, doesn’t it? You can go to a grocery store, a theme park, or even the halls here at church hear kids saying, “No” . . . and not exactly treating their parents with respect.

• Disrespecting our parents is not something new. In fact, it was something that God addressed the Bible. Check it out!

Drumline_Wk 3_Teaching 2_Video Drumline_Logo_Slide

Now, I told you that disrespecting parents is nothing new. Paul was talking about this with Christians almost 2,000 YEARS AGO! But even more crazy is that Paul was quoting from a part of the Bible that had been written MUCH earlier . . . like centuries earlier in a part of Exodus called the 10 commandments.

• And one of the 10 commandments is this: “Honor your father and mother!”

• Which bring us to our Bottom Line today!

Drumline_Wk 3_Bottom Line_Slide

Say it with me…You respect God when you respect your parents!

• Now my guess is that none of you is shocked that obeying your parents is the right thing to do. Sure, maybe you didn’t know that God talked about it in the Bible, but still most everybody knows it’s right.

• It’s not like when we are being disrespectful to our parents we are thinking (exaggerating) “Yeah, this just feels right!” No, deep down we know that’s wrong.

Page 4: Drumline Wk3 Elem LG...Just look at you, all tuckered out. And I think we might have a video for this next one… Drumline_Baby_Video Drumline_Logo_Slide • Come on! Look at those

• For most of us, it’s not should we obey our parents but HOW should we obey our parents? When our parents ask us to do something and we just flat out do not want to do it, HOW should we respond? (Wait for response)

• God wants us to show our parents respect by what we say and do.

• After all, God is our Heavenly Father and we should be showing Him respect too! Let’s pray!

Lead Kids in Prayer

God, thank You SO much for our parents. In this room, we have a lot of different kinds of families. But we know that no matter what, You’ve put us in our families for a reason. We know You’ve put our parents in charge of us for a reason. Please help us to show respect to them and to show them how important they are to us by the way we speak and act every single day. We know we need Your help to do it. We love You and we ask these things in Jesus’ name, amen!

Drumline_Worship

It is time for us to worship. One of the songs we’re singing today is going to remind us that God gives us everything we need! That includes giving us what we need to respect Him and respect others. Let’s worship!

Drumline_Everything I Need_Worship Video

Drumline_Wake_Worship Video Drumline_Offering_Slide

When I think of the word respect, it also makes me think of the word honor. Honoring someone means you are showing them “high respect, as for worth, merit, or rank.” And as we said before, God is the Creator of the universe! We can honor Him through our offering! We give because HE gave to us first. If anyone has offering, please place it in (Indicate area). Now we’ve been talking all about respect and honoring our parents, because that honors God. I have a father/daughter duo who are in a respectful, friendly beat boxing competition. Who do you think will win? Check it out!

Drumline_Beat Boxing_Video Drumline_Logo_Slide

• Raise your hand if you think the daughter won? (Wait for response)

• Raise your hand if you think the father won? (Wait for response) • At the end of the day they had a good time.

And now the mystery of the “5” is revealed! If you’re in 5th grade and want to learn about being an awesome leader for God, sign up today for 5th grade leadership!

That’s all the time we have today! Remember – you respect God when you respect your parents! That means when they tell you to finish your homework before you go outside, you don’t roll your eyes and stomp your feet. You argue less. You complain less. And not because you believe you’re any less right, but because you want to honor and obey God. Let’s end our time by praying for your classmates!
