It gives me great pleasure to introduce our first edition ofINSIGHT, a magazine dedicated for the Middle East andNorth Africa, providing you with the latest updates andnews from Dentsply Sirona in the MENA region.

The past 18 months have seen a lot of changes to our company in the MeNA region following the

Dentsply and sirona merger in early 2016. On page 4 you can read about our recent relocation to

our new regional head office in Dubai - we are incredibly proud of our new facilities which include a

20-participant training centre, CeReC suite and full showroom. in addition to exploring our new

facilities and offices, on page 5 you can meet my leadership team who are dedicated to bringing you

the best products, services, support, education and events that we have to offer.

Our first edition of iNsiGHT is packed with updates on our equipment, consumables and laboratory

products, but in particular, celebrates the Class ii procedure, the bread and butter of restorative

dentistry. Research tells us that the number one reason for Class ii failure is recurrent caries and that

the floor of the proximal box is the most vulnerable interface. Dentsply sirona has designed a

complete portfolio to help you better manage restorative performance at this critical area, you can

read more on pages 12-13 and also find out why Prof. simone Grandini from the university of siena

believes Class ii’s deserve more attention.

i hope you enjoy reading the first edition of iNsiGHT and thank you for your continued support

towards Dentsply sirona.

Dentists are eager to understand what motivates consumers to select and become long-termpatients of a dental practice. Futuredontics® conducted a major survey of consumer attitudestowards dentists and dentistry to more than 3,000 individuals. This report looks at the results andis designed to answer many of the most important questions facing dentists today.

Here are the major findings of this survey, along with recommendations on how you can best usethis information to increase production and profitability at your practice.

What Dental

of patients wouldswitch dentists iftheir current practicestopped acceptingtheir insurance plan.

42%They say that the three most important things in real estate are “location, location, location.” For dentists, it’s“insurance, insurance, insurance.” since the last survey in 2013, “accepting my insurance” has jumped far aheadof previous leaders, such as “services dentist provides” and “location,” to become the number one factor dentalpatients consider when selecting a dentist.

Patients Want you to AcceptTheir insurance1

Recommendations

insurance can be seen as both an opportunity and a headache fordentists. it’s important to understand your patient base and, if you wantto expand, consider adding insurance plans. simply put, the greater thenumber of dental insurance plans your practice accepts the greater thelikelihood you will be able to acquire and retain new patients. Determiningwhich plans are best for you to participate in requires research.

The second most important factor patients consider when selecting a dentist is the location. 44% of surveyrespondents said that a convenient office is a must. Nearly half of all patients won’t go to practices that falloutside the radius of their daily travels between home, work, school, etc. This is totally understandable. Today’sdental patients — people in general — are busier than ever. Anything that makes life easier is welcomed bytoday’s over-scheduled, time-strapped consumers. This is why practices that focus on making visiting thedentist as convenient as possible have an advantage over their competitors.

Patients Want you To BeConvenient2

Recommendations

selecting the right location for your practice is essential. some convenience factors to keep in mind whenselecting a site include patient parking, proximity to transport links and ease of access to major roads, etc. There are a variety of things dentists can do to make it easier for patients including:• Offering same-day or next-day scheduling options to all your new patients.• Getting patient leads in the chair within 24 hours (which will also significantly increases show-up rates).• staying open late or opening early one or two days a week – and adding weekend hours.• Providing online appointment requests on your website and Facebook page.

Patients Want

of consumerssurveyed will paymore for serviceswith higher ratingsand reviews.

86%

The survey found that nearly one-third of patients say their choice of dentist is highly influenced by a practice’sonline reputation. The importance of a dentist’s online reviews and ratings has increased significantly sincethe last survey. in 2013, reviews ranked a dentist’s credentials as the seventh most influential factor in the dentistselection process. it’s now number three. Today’s patients consider reviews far more relevant than wheredentists went to school, how many years they have been practicing and even the range of services they offer.

Patients Want To see yourReviews3

Recommendations

Dealing with online reviews must be a top priority of every practice. itshould be the job of someone in the practice to regularly visit Google, yelp and the other sites at least daily, and see if anything new has beenposted about your practice. Another good idea is to set up a Google Alert, which can be programmed to send you an email every time your name ismentioned online in a public document. it’s also important to regularlymonitor social media sites like Facebook and Twitter for mentions of yourpractice, as patients may “review” your practice in these forums as well.

of respondents said the “useof advanced technology toprovide better and fasterservice” was one of thethree most importantfactors they consider whenselecting a dentist

19%

Patients Want you To useAdvanced Dental Technology4

Recommendations

Advanced technologies like CeReC® and Orthophos sl 3D have created anew standard of care that caters to consumers seeking better and fastertreatment. The challenge is how to best promote the advantages of thesetechnologies to new and existing patients. Here are few suggestions:• Focus on translating the benefits of advanced technology into language

the average patient can appreciate.• Make advanced technology the star of your practice. Feature it

prominently on your practice website, social media postings and be sureto mention the advantages during new patient phone calls and duringtreatment.

One of the pivotal findings of our survey is the increasing importance of dental technology to patients. 19% ofrespondents said the “use of advanced technology to provide better and faster service” was one of the threemost important factors they consider when selecting a dentist. This is a big change. in our last survey, technology just barely made it into the top ten factors. Today, it ranks as the fourth most important. The importance of technology to your practice can’t be overemphasized. This survey found that many patientsbetween the ages of 25 and 54 said that they would switch from their current dentist if they did not offeradvanced technology treatment options.

Introducing

Prime&Bond universal™

Active moisture control for reliable restorations

Dentsply Sirona is proud to introduce Prime&Bonduniversal™, our new universal adhesive. Designed for alletching methods and indications, Prime&Bond universal™features patented Active-Guard™ Technology – a significantadvancement in adhesive chemistry that actively controlsmoisture on the prepared surface. Even if dentin is overlywet or dry, Prime&Bond universal™ is simple to use andprovides consistent results for a strong, reliable bond.

An ideal adhesive will reliably bond to both wet and dry surfaces. Prime&Bond universal™ does just that. Mostdental adhesives are rather hydrophobic: they separate from water. With too much water on the prepared surface, these rather hydrophobic adhesives fail to cover the prepared surface uniformly. During air-drying, adhesive gapscan form as embedded pockets of water evaporate, increasing the risks of post-operative sensitivity and bondfailure.

Active-Guard™ Technology with active moisture control is exclusively designed to protect against these risks. Thepatented Active-Guard™ Technology balances hydrophobic and hydrophilic features and helps to achieve anoptimized surface tension. Thus, Prime&Bond universal™ can overcome the surface tension of water, allowing theadhesive to spread evenly across the dentin and into the dentinal tubules to form a uniform, homogeneous layer. When the adhesive is air-dried, solvent and excess water evaporate uniformly to leave a thin, consistent coatingof adhesive across the entire surface. The result is a strong, reliable bond, with virtually no post-operativesensitivity.3

97% of GDPs state that too dry or too wet dentinsometimes affects the adhesive bond of their

composite restorations1.

Research shows that on average, 10-15%of posterior composite restorations result inpost-operative sensitivity. For Prime&Bonduniversal™, the incidence of post-operative

sensitivity can be as low as 0.16%2.

To ensure a homogeneousapplication, water and solventevaporate together, leaving aneven, consistent adhesive layer.

Class II Solution™:

12

DS INSIGHT | Issue 01 2017

Introducing the Dentsply Sirona

CLASS II SOLUTION™

For successful Restorative Outcomes. When the Class II procedure accounts for almost half of direct restorations1, it’stime to rethink what it means to your practice. Getting them right the first timeis the key to happy patients and practice profitability. The new Class II Solution™

by Dentsply Sirona is the only comprehensive Class II approach for more efficientclinical outcomes and bottom-line results.

Class ii restorations were first introduced in 1968 and initially performed using amalgam fillings. inrecent years, tooth-colored, resin-based composites have increased in popularity and became thepopular choice for clinicians treating Class ii cases. While composites certainly provide a moreesthetically pleasing finish than amalgams, they’re also predisposed to a higher rate of failure dueto issues such as recurrent caries, fractures and post-operative sensitivity. such failures not onlylead to discontented patients and decreased retention, but also cost additional time and money. The longevity of each Class ii restoration depends on taking control of as many variables as possible.

Many clinicians have developed the habit of assembling their own Class ii system using anassortment of products and materials from different manufacturers. While this approach can playout successfully, it can also lead to unpredictable outcomes. By establishing an all-encompassingdirect restoration system, dental professionals can confidently control every step of the processwhile rendering precise, predictable results each and every time.2

Dentsply Sirona is offering the complete Class II Solution™ - a portfolio of products designed towork together to deliver success at the most vulnerable interface (the floor of the proximal box) –and achieve great esthetic results.

When using resin-based restoratives, both isolation and accuratecontact creation are essential for success. Choose a matrixsystem that not only provides anatomically accurate contacts, but also helps create a tight seal around the restorative field.

The Palodent® V3 matrix system is designed to createpredictable, accurate contacts, a tight gingival seal, and can beconfigured for multiple restorations at once.

70% of clinicians find contactcreation to be the most

challenging part of a Class iirestoration.3

if a restorative material doesn’t take the form of the cavity prep, gaps may occur. This may lead to post-op sensitivity, microleakage or recurrent decay.

SDR® has self-leveling properties for excellent cavity adaptation, which is essential for delivering a complete seal at the mostvulnerable interface.

82% of dentists report using a

flowable as a liner in Class iirestorations to increasemarginal adaptation.5

The right composite delivers an efficient, profitable procedurefor the dentist and an esthetic result for the patient. Viscosityoptions can help with placement ease and efficiency. An easy-to-use shading system can impact office inventory. And stainresistance to beverages, like wine and coffee, can improvepatient satisfaction.

ceram.x® SphereTEC™ one composite delivers a real clinicaldifference in three key areas: preferred handling, simplifiedshading, and excellent stain resistance.

74% of dentists complain about

handling propertiesof composites such as

adaptability and stickiness.6

The strongest bond is to etched enamel, but over-etching dentinis a leading cause of post-operative sensitivity. using a universaladhesive with a selective-etch technique allows a durableenamel bond, while minimizing the probability of sensitivity thatcan result from etching deep dentin.

The unique chemistry of Prime&Bond Universal™ adhesive withActive-Guard™ Technology provides high bond strengths withvirtually no post-operative sensitivity thanks to its low filmthickness.

Research shows that on average,

10-15%of posterior composites resultin post-operative sensitivity.4

Q: Prof. Grandini, you are considered a “giant” ofDentistry, could you tell us what motivated youto dedicate yourself to this discipline?

A: Thanks for the compliment, but i cannot seemyself as a “giant”, i am just trying to do mybest every single day. i am extremely passionateabout teaching at my home university in siena.i love the feeling of seeing my young studentsgrow and get better every day, and i feel veryproud of their achievements. last month MariaRosaria Ferraro, one of my 5th year students,(assisted by her tutor Dr Giulio Pavolucci) wonthe Dentsply sirona italian case contest for thebest restorative case, and then she also won the3rd prize in the global case contest (amongalmost 600 students). Apart from that, i havebeen part of the style italiano family since itscreation and i like sharing our knowledge andpassion for dentistry: every time i lecture, ispread the concept of “feasible-teachable-repeatable” which allows every single dentist toachieve better results in a simplified way. Finally,i work as a dentist in my practice in siena, wherei love “team-working” with my colleagues andproviding the best possible treatment for everysingle patient.

My father is the reason why i am a dentist. Hewas the Dean of the university of Florence for along time and i have always admired his workethic and his incredible skills. He’s a superbclinician, a warm and generous teacher in theuniversity, and most important of all arespected and honest man. i always joke sayinghe’s the original Professor Grandini and that iam just a copy…

Q: According to you what is the most challengingmanifestation of a Class ii compositerestoration?

A: Class ii resin restorations are up to 10 timesmore likely to be replaced at the clinician’sexpense than Class ii dental amalgams. We tendto think a patient will visit us again if he has aproblem, or if a restoration fails, butunfortunately 26% of those who do not returnto the same dentist blame the fact that the resinrestoration wasn't a success.

Most clinicians find contact creation as the most

challenging step. in the past it was very difficultto obtain a sound, well designed interdentalarea. New instruments and techniques help uscreate a class ii restoration in a shorter amountof time and achieve consistent results on a dailybasis. i can see this every day with my students, they learn very quickly and they like the idea ofhaving a reliable protocol.

Q: Class ii is a critical player in a practice’s success. What advice will you give to colleagues to

perform with confidence in every step of a Classii restoration procedure?

A: Following a rational clinical workflow makesthings easy and reliable. let me quote Brucelee who said “i fear not the man that haspracticed 10.000 kicks once, but i fear the manwho practiced one kick 10.000 times”.

A good anesthesia, a proper isolation of theoperating field, using the correct adhesive, matrices and composites will definitely help allof us obtain consistent results when restoring ainterdental decay. The combination of Palodent®V3 – sDR® – ceram.x® sphere works very wellfor this purpose.

Q: Outside of Dentistry, what are you passionateabout?

A: i am very passionate about sports in general. iused to play volleyball at a professional levelwhen i was young, and i still love many differentsports. i am a fan of all Boston professionalteams (Red sox, Patriots, Bruins) and i likeAmerican Pro-sports in general, as they areextremely entertaining for me.

i like jogging and i exercise whenever i can.siena is a wonderful city and together with mywife, my beautiful dog sharky and some friends,we enjoy doing some “power” walking in themidst of such beauty.

i also like reading and find that books havealways been a very good way to relax and thebest food for my mind.

But of course my very first passion is my family;spending time with my wife Michelle and mydaughter Rebecca is a real treasure for me.

Q Fast forward five or 10 years… What is in storefor the future of Dentistry?

A: On one hand, Digital Dentistry, CAD-CAMsystems, single visit restorative are definitelygoing to become more and more popular.Patients are aware of the changes that aretaking place and request painless andcomfortable treatments.

On the other hand, as a teacher, i still firmlybelieve that every student has to gain a soundclinical background and work on clinical skills.Virtual reality will definitely help all of us whendealing with students' development, allowing usto interact and correct them at each of theclinical steps.

Dentsply Sirona proudly sponsored the endodontic rootcanal treatment of two adult lions at the Abu DhabiWildlife Centre in Al Wathba, by providing custom-madestainless-steel files for the operation.

Two adult lions received the extensive dental procedure as a result of fractured canineteeth. Although tooth fractures are common in big cats, the treatment of thesefractures are still relatively new. Dr. Gerhard steenkamp, a veterinary surgeon with20 years’ experience, voluntarily performed the surgery; his passion for wildlife andzoology has resulted in his national and international involvement in variousconservational programs and dental treatments. He has performed in excess of 300dental procedures on carnivores including bears, cheetahs, hyenas, and leopards, andhas executed over 100 root canal treatments and extractions on lions and tigers alone.

Sarah Waldmann, our seniorProduct Manager based at theendodontic sBu in switzerland, gifting over 100 custom-madefiles to Dr. steenkamp.

saving animals' teeth is essential for eating and self-defence, and root canal treatments can prevent potentially life-threatening infections. As the Dental solutions Company™, Dentsply sirona firmly believes that when it comes todentistry "endo matters". We understand the importance of saving every tooth, no matter the size!

The endodontic treatments performed at theAbu Dhabi Wildlife Centre were similar to theprocedures performed on humans with thesame condition; the main difference being thesize of the files. The procedure involved theremoval of the pulpal tissue to the apex of theroot in the canine teeth to remove theinfection. Dentsply sirona specificallydeveloped a sequence of Hedstroems fromisO 030 to isO 180, enabling Dr. steenkampto remove the pulp tissue with ease. The filesfrom 030 until 140 increased in increments often, and then by twenty up to 180. The activepart per file was 60mm, and the total lengthwithout the handle reached 150mm.

The custom-made Hedstroem stainless–steelhand files are the pinnacle of precision swissengineering. Dr. steenkamp was impressed bythe sharpness of our files, noting that thesewill allow him to perform procedures fasterand more effectively. Dr. Jane Budd whoadministered the anesthesia during thesesurgeries commented that as anesthesia isvery stressful for wild animals, cutting edgeequipment such as our files will greatlybenefit dental procedures as well as theoverall well-being of the animals. By usingDentsply sirona files going forward, Dr.steenkamp will be able to reduce the amountof time the animals are under anaesthesis for,in turn lessening the profound effects of it onan animal's physiology.

Whilst it is more common to perform rootcanal treatments with rotary endodontics onhumans, for larger animals, and in theprocedure at Abu Dhabi Wildlife Centre, traditional stainless-steel manual files areoften used. That being said, to find files ofsuitable sizes and active working lengths fordental procedures on larger animals is adifficult task. Dentsply sirona is thereforeproud to lend our support and global reach toDr. steenkamp’s efforts. With the productionof over 100 custom-made endodontic filesand the donation of an X-smart iQ™ andProTaper Gold™ files, we hope to enable Dr.steenkamp to continue his good deedsworldwide.

For the male lion, the fracture of his tooth wassaved by a root canal treatment. The internalaspect of the root canal was sterilized andfilled with gutta-percha which was cementedin place and a simple restoration wascompleted on top. For the lioness, a rootcanal treatment was performed on onecanine, but on the other the pulp tissue haddeteriorated and bacteria had lodged into thefractured tooth creating a chronic abscess, meaning the only option was extraction. Bothlions recovered rapidly from the proceduresand were soon roaring again in the afternoon.Rone’l Barcellos, the manager of the centre, was happy after the successful surgery andsaid “now they will have a normal life at theirnew home.”
