2017 Scholars Awarded Across the Country

Words From Our 2017 Scholars

"I am honored to be selected for the Dolphin Scholarship. I am very grateful to be a part of the active and gener-ous submarine community. This community has been a part of my life since birth, and now through the Dolphin Scholarship, it is helping me to realize my dreams."

—Catherine Massie

"It is an honor and a privilege to represent the submariners’ dependents of the United States as a recipient of the Dolphin Scholarship. The opportunity to be part of the Dolphin family, a family committed to inspiring success in young people across the nation, is simply incredible, and I cannot thank DSF enough."

—Tyler LaBonte

"To me, being a Dolphin Scholar means pursuing an education while also main-taining core values such as honor, courage, and commit-ment."

—-Oliver Hofstrom

"It is a great honor to be selected as a Dol-phin Scholar. I hold the silent service in the highest esteem. I hope to represent DSF well at my school and live up to the distinction earned by previous Dolphin Scholars."

Pom Pom has been particularly susceptible to adverse fishing practices such as blast fishing (people literally drop bombs on coral reefs so that the fish die and float up afterwards) and cyanide fishing (where people poison the water, killing the sea life below). I worked for the Tropical Research and Conservation Centre (TRACC) to build artificial reefs, coral nurseries, take surveys of the fish population, and did night walks around the island to deter poachers from attacking nesting sea turtles and their eggs.

Pom Pom Island, Malaysia

A friend and I did a seven day climb of the mountain (five days to reach the summit and two days to descend). Throughout the climb we walked through five distinctly different ecosystems on our way to the top. We climbed thousands of meters to reach a peak height of 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) and were rewarded with one of the most beautiful views.

After finishing up my first semester abroad, I departed for Stellen-bosch University in South Africa. Here I studied international af-fairs, as well as, got to explore much of the Western Cape of South Africa. Here I was also fortunate enough to get a multitude of op-portunities to explore the almost innumerable cultures of South Africa. During my school breaks in South Africa I took two excur-sions outside of the country. First, I spent a week studying cultural conservation in Bali, Indonesia. Then during my second weeklong recess, a friend and I went to Tanzania and climbed Mount Kili-manjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa. I then returned to South Africa and finished up my semester there and then flew back to the US, where I'm interning in Atlanta at the ACLU of Georgia this summer.

Some friends and I decided to do a road trip throughout part of South Africa's Western Cape. Early in the road trip we decided to visit a giraffe sanctuary called the Giraffe House, which takes in and tries to rehabilitate injured animals. We were given the opportunity to feed some of the giraffes. When I went to feed one of the giraffes, he took a greater interest in me and my friend than in the food we were offering him. We quickly found he was incredibly friendly and was more excited to play with us than to eat. He even stopped to pose for a selfie with me.

I left for Beijing in the beginning of June 2016, to participate in an intensive language program at Beijing Foreign Studies University. While there, I also interned with a non-governmental organization, the International Green Economy Association. After the pro-gram ended in August, I spent five weeks on Pom Pom Island in Malaysia at the Tropical Research and Conservation Centre. At TRACC I worked on coral reef restoration and sea turtle preservation projects, creating and planting artificial corals and coral nurseries. I then returned to Beijing for a semester at Tsinghua University as an exchange student studying economics. While in China I also managed to explore throughout Beijing, visit the Great Wall of China, see the Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an, and explore the streets of Shanghai.

From the Executive Director

Hello DSF Family,

I hope that everyone had a great 4th of July and is having a wonderful summer! We’ve recently completed the 2017 Dolphin Scholar selection

and added 36 more outstanding young men and women to our League of Extraordinary Scholars! I am constantly amazed by the academic

achievement and numerous accomplishments by these fine young Americans. To all the applicants who were not selected this year please don’t

be discouraged and be sure to apply again in October.

In our January newsletter I asked you all to stay tuned because more great changes to the DSF scholarship program were on the way. I am

happy to announce that this past April the second TM3(SS) Steven C. Miksad, USS SCORPION (SSN 589) Scholarship was endowed, bringing

the number of fully endowed scholarships to 44! In May DSF took over the administration of the USS HAMPTON (SSN 767) Scholarship that

will be available in 2018. Also, I am happy to announce that the spouses of eligible current and former members of the U.S. Navy submarine

force and submarine force support personnel can now apply for the Dolphin Scholarship beginning in October 2017!! Please note that the DSF

Spouse Scholarship will not impact the number scholarships awarded to our dependent child applicants.

I want to thank my wonderful staff, Andrea Meinicke Diamond, Cindy Johannes and Jennifer Melendez for keeping the wheels turning here at

the foundation. Also, a big THANK YOU goes out to all DSF supporters for your partnership in helping us change lives by turning dreams into

reality, one scholarship at a time. HOOYAH Submarine Force!!

Page 10 Note From the Chair

As I write this note to all of our supporters and scholars, I’m looking forward to this year's scholar luncheon and meeting some of our amazing young people who will be taking their education to the next level with the help of DSF. This strikes me as a great time of year to give a shout-out to one group of people that has supported this scholarship since its inception, our sub-marine spouses. Donations from the spouse groups usually come in two flavors — the dolphin store and the annual auction. Dolphin Stores con-duct business at various sub base locations and are staffed by submarine force spouses active and retired. The store managers, buyers, treasurers and volunteers who run the stores contribute not only dollars to the Foundation, but great products that allow us to show our submarine spirit. The annual auctions are held at six sub bases (Groton, Norfolk, Kings Bay, Bangor, San Diego and Pearl Harbor), usually in the Spring and bring thousands and thousands of dollars to the scholarship each year. The amount of effort put into these events, an annual highlight of the submarine calendar, can’t be overstated – it is remarkable, and the volunteers consistently show energy, creativity and hospitality. Running a Dolphin Store or Auction isn’t always easy, but our submarine spouses are up to the challenge and committed. Both the stores and the auctions provide opportunities for our community to get together for a great cause and have fun (crazy fun times, based on the Norfolk auction this year!), while we support our young scholars — carrying on a fine tradition of our submarine community. I’m deeply grateful to all of our spouses for their support of our scholarship, community and Navy — thank you! Suzanne Tofalo, Chair

A Letter From the San Diego Submarine Community

Dear Andrew,

As we close the books on the 2017 Submarine Birthday Ball Dolphin Scholarship Foundation Silent Auction, I want to say a sincere thank you for your guidance and support of our efforts. As you are aware, we have a unique situation in the San Diego area without the backing support of a SOSA.

The Ball was a night of celebrating the anniversary of the US Submarine Force, and the Silent Auction was a lovely com-plement. Taking a somewhat unconventional approach to seating a committee, the San Diego submarine spouses em-braced the opportunity to gather across the ranks. With a devoted committee of officer, chief and enlisted spouses, these talented women gave selflessly of their time to guaran-tee an outstandingly successful silent auction. Our guests enjoyed an evening of spirited bidding and the chance to contribute to the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation. We are humbled by the kindness of our guests and eternally thankful for their contributions.

On behalf of the entire San Diego submarine community, I wish you the very best in your continued efforts to support the educational dreams of our children.

Sincerely, Kacey Davies
