Thiagarajar College

Thiagarajar College was founded in 1949, in the pilgrim city of Madurai, by Kalaithanthai thKarumuttu Thiagarajar Chettiar, a great philanthropist and a visionary of the 20 century. This college is a

preeminent co-educational autonomous institution of higher learning affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj

University. The founder of this institution had a vision of providing quality higher education at an

affordable cost to the rural masses, the downtrodden and the poor to realize the vision of the father of the

nation. The multifaceted mission of the founder is carried on by his heirs, the President Mr. Karumuttu

T.Kannan, the Vice President Dr. (Mrs). Uma Kannan and the Secretary Mr. K. Thiagarajan . With a spirit of

research, the “miles-to-go” attitude, innovative and empowering culture, the college has witnessed

phenomenal growth in 50 years. The college offers 26 UG, 15 PG, 12 M.Phil. and 9 Ph.D. programmes. Due

to constant monitoring of the quality in various aspects of education, the college was initially accredited

with FIVE STAR status in 2001 and subsequently Re-Accredited with 'A' grade by NAAC in 2007 and 2013.

All science departments are DST-FIST sponsored. All the science departments received financial

assistance to the tune of 38 lakhs from DBT-Star College scheme.

The college is situated at a vantage

point, on the Madurai-Rameswaram highway

and in between the legendary river Vaigai to its

north and the famous Vandiyur Teppakkulam

to its south. Madurai has a number of

historical monuments, with the Meenakshi

Amman Temple and Tirumalai Nayak Palace

being the most prominent.
