recent years, having reached the final in 2002, where they were beaten by Brazil, and the semi-finals in 2006 and 2010. Bastian Schweinsteiger, who received a cut below his eye after a challenge from Sergio Aguero failed to hold back the tears, as he embraced head coach, Joachim Low, who has under seen a revolution in German football, when he took over the helm eight years ago.

Captain Phillipp Lahm was left with the honor of hoisting the World Cup, which he wasted very little time in doing, with German Chancellor, Angela Merkel in

close attendance.Germany ended the

tournament unbeaten, but will perhaps best be remembered for their 7-1 thrashing of Brazil in the semi-finals, which ended the host nations hopes of claiming a record sixth World Cup crown.

Football fans will now have to wait for another four years before the next edition gets underway, when it will take place in Russia.

“Buyer & Cellar,” written by Jonathan Tolins, directed by Stephen Brackett and starring Michael Urie, is —in a word—hilarious. The idea for this totally original comedy concept came to the playwright Tollins after reading Barbra Streisand’s 2010 coffee-table book “My Passion for Design” with photographs by the diva as well. In her book, she showcases all the treasures in her estate home and in her, very special basement that contains a movie-set-like street of shops that house her collection of

dolls, costumes and antique furniture. Since her collection of stuff was so overwhelming, she created this fantastic cellar of faux shops to showcase all the great acquisitions that wouldn’t fit comfortably in her fabulously extravagant Malibu home.

This much of the story is true, but everything else is the product of Tollin’s fertile imagination says Urie before he steps on stage and into his, many roles in this off-Broadway hit that has finally arrived in L.A. And the opening-night audience laughed it up, enjoying all the local references as well as the little jabs aimed at mega-star Babs, who is one of the characters in this one-man tour de force.

Urie has performed in countless theatrical roles, but may be most familiar to audiences as Marc St. James on TV’s “Ugly Betty.” In “Buyer

& Cellar” he glides like “buttah” from one character to another as he plays Alex More, an out-of-work actor hired to be the pretend manager of the mall shops in the ‘cellar,’ Alex’s judgmental boyfriend and confidant, Streisand’s house manager, her husband, James Brolin and La Streisand herself. The result is so much fun you will be glad that you, like Alex, could come to Barbra Streisand’s cellar complete with a popcorn maker and yogurt machine...

“Buyer & Celllar,” at the Mark Taper Forum at the Music Center in downtown L.A. through Aug. 17. For tickets and info call (213) 628-2772

Summer 2014 continues to yield musical pay dirt thanks to the far-flung talents of singer-songwriter Morrissey, heartland hero John Hiatt, Americana trio Puss n Boots and synth pop outfit Magic Man.

Artist: MorrisseyTitle: World Peace Is None of Your Business (Harvest/Capitol)You might like if you enjoy: The Smiths, Morrissey’s previous solo albums

Tell me more: It would be impossible to find an artist as adept as Morrissey at tapping into their biggest self-doubts and fears while also being able to confidently poke their finger into the collective eye of humanity. The former Smiths front man maybe 55, but sings with the nuance and force of someone half his age on

his new disc “World Peace Is None of Your Business.” There is simply no subject off limits and just about everyone will likely be offended somewhere along the way; the title track questions the success of mass protest and even voting, the decidedly-Smiths sounding “Staircase at the University” looks at student suicide, while “The Bullfighter Dies” champions the bull over the matador. And the music across the disc is glorious, with an intoxicating mix of alt rock, flamenco, post-punk and art damage providing the perfect backdrop for the confessional icon to sing away. Information: harvestrecords.com.

Artist: John HiattTitle: Terms of My Surrender (New West Records)You might like if you enjoy: John Prine, Kris

Kristofferson, Nils LofgrenTell me more: Keeping it

real is in John Hiatt’s DNA. One of America’s greatest living songwriters, his newly-released “Terms of My Surrender” marks another essential sonic incursion by the Indiana native. Mortality is tackled on “Long Time Coming,” probing look at faith via the acoustic blues of “Face Of God” and haunting gospel-tinged Delta ode “”Wind Don’t Have to Hurry.” The beautiful title track looks at love with depth wonderfully at odds in an age where the world seems to live for the moment. A much-recommended deluxe edition of “Terms of My Surrender” (available via Amazon.com) includes a bonus DVD with a live performance by Hiatt captured at the Franklin Theatre in Franklin, Tenn in 2013. Information: JohnHiatt.com.

Artist: Puss n BootsTitle: No Fools, No Fun (Blue Note Records)You might like if you enjoy: Norah Jones, Sasha Dobson, Catherine Popper

Tellme more: Noted singers Norah Jones, Sasha Dobson and Catherine Popper having been working together since 2008, but only now released a full-length LP. “No Fools, No Fun” showcases the three talented artists (dubbed Puss n Boots) playing a variety of instruments and singing with tangible warmth. Among the best songs on the wonderful collection is a sparse acoustic take on Robbie Robertson’s “Twilight,” a high kickin’ country foray on the original Norah Jones gem “Don’t Know What It Means” and a haunting translation of Neil Young’s classic “Down By the River” recorded live. Information:

BlueNote.com.

Artist: Magic ManTitle: Before the Waves (Columbia Records),You might like if you enjoy: Phoenix, Passion Pit, the Postal Service

Tell me more: New England-based Magic Man is more than simply another entry on the burgeoning neo-New Wave synthpop movement. The group’s Columbia Records debut “Before the Waves” boasts the upbeat indietronica-pop of “Out of Mind,” decidedly melancholy-rich strains of “It All Starts Here” and melodic perfection of “Paris.” Produced by Alex Aldi “ (Passion Pit, Holy Ghost!),Before the Waves” is bound together by Alex Caplow’s shining vocals. Palm Springs – By taking two of three from the SCCBL (Southern California Collegiate Baseball League) rival High Desert Heat (8-15 Overall, 4-9 in SCCBL) over the weekend, the Palm Springs POWER (29-6 Overall, 9-3 in SCCBL) have clinched the playoffs for the seventh consecutive year.

The POWER were convinced they would sweep the lowly team but the Heat’s game-one starter out of Peru State, Adam Quintana, put a quick end to the POWER’s plan to go undefeated during the three-game stretch.

With a mid-90’s fastball and a solid complimentary curve ball, Quintana shut down the POWER

offense the entire game. In fact, in the 9th inning, Quintana was still tossing an impressive 92-plus mph.

Friday’s loss dropped the POWER to 7-3 in the SCCBL, which left the Palm Springs Stadium tenants only a game ahead of the SCCBL-leading Inland Valley Pirates (22-5 Overall, 10-4 in SCCBL) in the loss column. The loss against the Heat had been the POWER’s first since July 5th against the non-SCCBL San Diego Force, when the Palm Springs team was, once again, outmatched by a superior starting pitcher.

Despite dropping the first of the important three-game set – in what appeared to be a must-win scenario – POWER head coach Harry Gurley made a bold move and elected to go with reliever Nick Madeiros as his game-two starter.

“He’s a good pitcher,” Coach Gurley said, “I just ran him out there and thought he could win. I was saving our other starters for our Team San Diego series.”

The Santa Clara University pitcher made his manager look like a genius, throwing a complete-game seven-hitter, en route to the POWERs 8th SCCBL

victory on the season. “I thought (Nick) did a great

job,” Coach Gurley said. “He gave up a run in the first, a run in the second, he settled down and just pitched outstanding. He was getting two pitches over the plate, and it worked out real well for us.”

Madeiros’ performance worked out twofold for the POWER. In pitching all nine innings, the POWER completely rested their bullpen for the series finale with the Heat. Additionally, Coach Gurley was able to rest all of his starting pitchers at the top of the POWER rotation to be ready for a critical three-game series against Team San Diego earlier this week.

On Sunday’s rubber match with the High Desert Heat, Cam Margeris took to the bump, but with an 11-run cushion by the fourth inning, the game was essentially over before Margeris could put his own stamp on the game.

“(Run support) allows you to go out and attack,” Margeris said. “You really just focus on getting ahead – first pitch strikes; you are able to do a couple of different things, and not only worry about one run.”

With the win in the series

finale, the POWER’s league record improved to 9-3, and are still prime position to take first place in the SCCBL. After averaging only three runs in the first two games against the Heat, it is a good sign for the future to see the POWER break out of the minor slump and score 11 runs.

The POWER went on the road this Monday and played a crucial doubleheader against third-place Team San Diego (20-13 Overall, 6-5 in SCCBL). On Tuesday, the POWER and Team San Diego traveled back to Palm Springs Stadium for the series finale. On Wednesday, the POWER finishes their SCCBL season with one last game against the High Desert Heat.

Before the SCCBL, playoffs start on July 21, the POWER hosts a three-game series, Friday-Sunday, against the non-SCCBL SF Seals, and will host a firework’s show immediately following the series opener.

All POWER home games start at 7:05 pm., and take place at Palm Springs Stadium.

Waves of Memories in Oceaside, CA

known locally for “Morning Coffee With Dan” at EZ-103. FM kept the program right on schedule between screenings of The Best Animal Commercials from Around the World to the Cutest Pet Award presented by Joan Page McKenna, Senior Editor at Palm Spring Life Magazine. Among guests attending this popular summer event were Sid Craig, Secretary of the Board of Directors for the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Joey English, ‘The Voice of the Desert’, Miriam Wiegel, publisher of the Desert Pet Companion, Leanna Bonamici, handling the video production, author Grace Robbins and Catherine A. Eklund Mares, a major donor for the entertainment.

An impressive auction included dinner for Ten at the BG Bird Gardens hosted by Dick Shalhoub, the value placed

on this was “priceless.” And so was the entire afternoon, which showcased the enthusiastic community support Pegasus Therapeutic Riding and the Humane Society of the Desert. Guests were mesmerized by the 2014-1015 edition of Pets on Parade program, with portrait of horses, dogs, cats, and on one page, a rescued albino deer! The Coachella Valley is a safe haven for animal’s thanks to our community’s unconditional support.

“This year’s Pets on Parade was a success for our pet community. It is fulfilling Lindi Biggi’s dream of “a no kill shelter Coachella Valley” that we can all be proud about. The overwhelming turn out today combined with a concern to adopt and respect pets, in a larger sense is a role model for other communities,” said Miriam

Weigel, publisher of the Desert Pet Companion.

“The amazing support of Pets on Parade, despite this being July and having to deal with 105 degree heat today shows

what is being accomplished by those who care for animals, in our community!” said Sid R. Craig.

Yellowstone National Park’s SuperVolcano

By Desert Star StaffExtreme heat from a massive

super-volcano underneath Yellowstone National Park is melting a major roadway at the

popular summertime tourist attraction. Park officials have closed the area to visitors.

Firehole Lake Drive, a 3-mile-plus offshoot of the park’s Grand

Loop that connects the Old Faithful geyser and the Madison Junction, is currently off limits. Park operators say the danger of stepping on seemingly solid soil

into severely hot water is “high.”“It basically turned the asphalt

into soup. It turned the gravel road into oatmeal,”Yellowstone spokesman Dan Hottle said.

The affected roadway offers access to the Great Fountain Geyser, White Dome Geyser, and Firehole Lake.

“There are plenty of other great places to see thermal features in the park,” park public affairs chief Al Nash told The Weather Channel. “I wouldn’t risk personal injury to see these during this temporary closure.”

While thermal activity under the park often gives way to temperature fluctuations that can soften asphalt throughout Yellowstone, Hottle said the latest wave seems worse than usual.

“But it’s hard to tell if a thermal area is hotter than normal, because it’s always fluctuating here,” he said, according to the Los Angeles Times. “Road closures are business as usual for us.”

Maintenance workers now must lift the melted asphalt from the roadway, then apply sand and lime to soak up any remains, according to Hottle.

The spokesman said he hopes the road will be reopened by next week, adding that he does not believe the activity will significantly curb visits to the park.

Yellowstone’s supervolcano last erupted about 640,000 years ago, accordingto US Geological Survey records.

Last December, geologists reported that the magma reservoir under the supervolcano is two-and-a-half times larger

than previous estimates.“That’s not to say it’s getting

any bigger,” said analysis team scientist James Farrell of the University of Utah. “It’s just that our ability to see it is getting better.”

The supervolcano has the potential to spew more than 240 cubic miles (1,000 cubic kilometers) of magma across Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming.

“We believe it will erupt again someday, but we have no idea when,” Farrell toldNational Geographic.

In March, a viral video of bison stampeding through the park gave rise to rumors of an imminent eruption.

In early April, scientists and park officials debunked the fears, saying the bison run was a natural migratory occurrence, not a sign of impending volcanic activity. That very same week, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake shook the northwest section of the park, marking the largest seismic activity at Yellowstone since 1980.

The earthquake occurred near “an area or ground uplift tied to the upward movement of molten rock in the super-volcano, whose mouth, or caldera, is 50 miles long and 30 miles wide,” Reuters reported at the time.

The uplift does not make volcanic activity more likely, though, according to Peter Cervelli, associate director for science and technology at the US Geological Survey’s Volcano Science Center in California.

“The chance of that happening in our lifetimes is exceedingly insignificant,” he said. Source: rt.com
