In what was termed by many as a revolutionary move, Qatar Youth Hostel (QYH) created a platform for women across Qatar to

get inspired to reach heights, with the valuable tips of success-ful women, through an event titled ‘First Women’s Forum’.

As many as 60 women of various age groups has turned up for the event to discuss the success stories and challenges faced by women in Qatar and around the world. They also talked about new initiatives and activities being provided by QYH to women despite their

nationalities such as ‘Together from Qatar to world’ with pan-elists sharing their personal experiences and offering mes-sages of empowerment with the assembled audience.

The event was attended by Qatari dignitaries, including Dr Sheikha Al Misnad, Ex President of Qatar University; Zainab Al Mahmoud, Manager of CRS and Community Engagement; and Wajeeda Al Qahtani, Manager of Girls Creativity Center in Azizya.

Dr Misnad spoke to The Peninsula on the sidelines of the event, “The key aim should be raising awareness about QYH in the society and particularly how women can participate in differ-ent activities that QYH provides.”

COVER STORYMONDAY 20 MARCH 2017 03It was announed during the

event that the doors of QYH is opened for all the ladies present at the event.

“QYH is not just a place for peo-ple to stay by paying a reasonable membership price but a place that teaches you how to develop other values in youth like team building, tolerance, acceptance, learning life skills etc. We focus on how to encourage ladies to be a part of this organisation in order to develop their personalities,” she further added.

The strategy behind the partic-ipation of young girls in a variety of activities happening in Qatar has also come up for discussion at the event. As part of the event, the forum also celebrated International Women’s Day at QYH.

Zainab Al Mahmoud opined that QYH is providing an established platform for ladies to improve their abilities and prove themselves in the society.

“We should step out from the darkness and wear the light to showcase ourselves. I aim to cultivate a plant which gives countless fruits and a person who is always here to understand the problems you face.”

Wajeeda, during her speech, announced that she opens doors of ‘Girls Creativity center’ for QYH in relation to different activities, especially ‘Kashta’, an initiative aims communication and integration among both the Centers.

Talking to The Peninsula, Halima Alazkawi, Head of Marketing and PR at QYH said,

“Today we have given an

Introduction about QYH to 60 ladies present at the event. Whenever we say ‘Shabab’ (Arabic word for youth) , it always gives an idea of ‘Young Boys.’ But recently our new CEO hired a number of ladies to work for QYH and turned it upside down. Our major goal for today was to give an introduction to all the women present today. Together we hold a brainstorming session and shared ideas on how we can help women in different activities.”

He alos said that she is very happy that ladies today speak about their problems and share their ideas to implement. “Today as we are

celebrating International Women’s Day I would give urge all ladies ‘to be yourself’, no matter what you do, do with all your abilities,” he further added.

Zoha Pervaiz Akhtar, Admin Officer at QYH said that: “Being a part of this organisation makes me feel over whelmed, the ideas all ladies have shared with us have given us strength to put efforts to implement these ideas in near future. Today we have opened doors of QYH to all the women present with us and they will give us opportunity to do wonders in coming days. We celebrate International Women’s day, this day

is the day to pay tribute to every Woman and to salute her immense contribution in shaping the society. I feel proud to celebrate this occasion today.”

The participants appreciated the efforts of QYH in bringing all the ladies at one platform and open doors of QYH for them. “The initiatives they shared with us today were amazing to travel inside Qatar and outside Qatar and activities that develop us from different prescriptive. We suggested many programmes that help us to be a part of the community,” said Fatima Muhammad, an employee of QDB present at the event.

College of the North Atlantic - Qatar (CNA-Q) hosted its largest co-curricular event of

the academic year, the 8th annual CNA-Q Skills Competition, spon-sored by Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco).

The CNA-Q Skills Competition offers 50 different competitions – in engineering technology, information technology, health sci-ences, business studies, and academics – simulating a variety of real-world tasks that students will need to perform in the workplace once they graduate. The CNA-Q Skills Competition is modeled after World Skills International, which is a global initiative to promote the development of skilled trades. This year the World Skills competition is being held in Abu Dhabi.

The Winner of the Qapco High-est Achiever award was presented to Abdullah Ali Abdoulghani. He is an Engineering Technology –Tech-nician Certificate Program student who is sponsored by Qapco. He was presented his award by Mr. Abdul-rahman Sultan Al Darwish, Qapco’s Strategic Qatarization Manager for

achievements in the Skills Compe-tition and wider academic studies, while maintaining perfect attendance.

Dr Mohammed Yousef Al Mulla, Qapco’s Managing Director & CEO stated, “By supporting CNA-Q’s innovative educational programs such as the CNA-Q Skills Competi-tion, we believe we are making a difference to the future of voca-tional training in Qatar by nurturing talent and expertise. This competi-tion is important as it sharpens the skills of the students and ensures their marketability in an increas-ingly competitive working environment.”

More than 550 College students competed against their peers to test the technical skills they are learn-ing through their studies. For the second year, the College partnered with local secondary schools to include over 400 secondary stu-dents from 40 schools in the Competition, giving more young people the opportunity to be involved in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Allowing your kids play out in the open can help them develop a deep love for

nature as they grow, a study has shown.

“Developing positive experi-ences in nature at a young age can influence our attitudes and behav-iours towards nature as adults,” said Catherine Broom, Assistant Profes-sor at University of British Columbia in Canada. In the study, published in the Australian Journal of Envi-ronmental Education, 87 per cent of children who played outside as children expressed a continued love for nature as young adults.

Of that group, 84 per cent said taking care of the environment was a priority. “It is important to study these childhood experiences in order to develop environmental awareness and action in the next

generation,” Broom added. For the study, the team inter-

viewed 50 university students between the ages of 18 to 25. Of the group, 100 per cent of females stated that they loved nature and 87 per cent of males responded the same. Environmental awareness programmes at a young age can also help develop children’s aware-ness and action, the researchers added.

“Our findings imply that provid-ing positive childhood experiences in nature, such as outdoor school programmes, may help to develop care for the environment in adults,” Broom noted.

The researchers suggested that schools and early childhood class-room activities should connect positive experiences in nature with mindful learning and reflection that help empower students to take a personal role in protecting the

environment by recycling, turning off the lights, and using alternative transportation methods. “Students need to learn and have a conscious understanding that the decisions

we make each day can influence our environment, such as where we buy our food and how we use the Earth’s natural resources,” Broom said.

If you are highly skilled at your workplace, chances are that your expertise can prove to be a risk fac-tor for procedural errors in environments with

a high incidence of task interruption, researchers say.

The study conducted by researchers in the Mich-igan State University showed that experienced workers are generally faster at performing proce-dural tasks.

It means their actions are more closely spaced in time and thus more confusable when they attempt to recall where to resume a task after being interrupted.

As steps of a procedure are performed more quickly, memory for past performance becomes less accurate, increasing the rate of skipped or repeated steps after an interruption. “The faster things hap-pen, the worse we tend to remember them,” said lead investigator Erik Altmann from Michigan State University. For example, a nurse is interrupted while preparing to give a dose of medication and then must remember whether he or she administered the dose.

“The more experienced nurse will remember less accurate than a less-practiced nurse, if the former performs the steps involved in administering med-ication more quickly,” Altmann added. For the experiment, published in the Journal

of Experimental Psychology: General, 224 people performed two sessions of a computer-based pro-cedural task on separate days.

Participants were interrupted randomly by a simple typing task, after which they had to remem-ber the last step they performed to select the correct step to perform next. In the second session, people became faster, and on most measures, more accu-rate. After interruptions, however, they became less accurate, making more errors by resuming the task at the wrong spot.

Sometimes it feels like I’m running a fast-casual res-taurant out of my home kitchen, with a nightly clientele of just two. What

grain would we like for the base of our bowls? What protein? What vegetable? What dressing, and what crunchy topping(s)?

That’s when things are work-ing the way I’ve planned, and I’ve got all of the above - in multiple choices, sometimes! - waiting in the fridge or freezer for me to defrost (if need be), assemble and warm. And it can be a particularly efficient, even satisfying, way to eat, especially because my partner and I have different dietary pref-erences. He can have shrimp over cauliflower “rice,” and I can have tofu or beans over barley, but we’ll both get roasted red peppers, say, plus charred zucchini, topped with a homemade vinaigrette or yogurt sauce and nuts.

It might seem strange to be suggesting just such a strategy while also recommending Wright’s recipe for one particular bowl, but consider it inspiration for the types of things you can combine when you get into the right mind-set.

Roasted Chile Lime Tofu Bowls

4 servingsHere’s a starting point for the

dinnertime bowl strategy: Combine a cooked grain, plant protein, sauce, seasonal vegetables and topping. This variation is based on tofu, roasted with broccoli and a tart, spicy dressing.

Adapted from “The First Mess Cookbook: Vibrant Plant-Based Rec-ipes to Eat Well Through the Seasons,” by Laura Wright (Avery, 2017).

IngredientsOne 14-ounce block extra-firm

tofu2 teaspoons freshly grated lime

zest plus 2 tablespoons lime juice (from 1 lime), or more juice as needed

2 tablespoons grapeseed or other neutral oil, or more as needed

1/2 teaspoon granulated garlic (garlic powder)

1/2 teaspoon crushed red pep-per flakes

1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt, plus more as needed

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground

black pepperAbout 6 ounces broccoli florets

(about (3 cups)1/4 cup lightly packed chopped

fresh basil leaves, plus a few small whole leaves, for garnish

Water (optional)2 cups cooked brown rice,

warmed1/2 cup fresh sunflower sprouts

(may substitute another sprout of your choice)

1/4 cup raw, hulled, unsalted sunflower seeds, toasted (see NOTE)

Steps

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Drain the tofu of its packing liquid and pat dry with a kitchen towel. Cut the tofu into 1-inch cubes. Whisk together the lime zest and juice, oil, garlic powder, crushed red pepper flakes, salt and pepper in a medium bowl. Taste, and add more salt, as needed. Gen-tly toss the tofu in the dressing. Transfer the coated tofu cubes to the baking sheet, gently shaking off as much of the marinade as possible back into the bowl. Roast (middle rack) for 15 minutes, until the tofu is lightly browned on the bottom. Remove from the oven and gently flip the cubes over. Toss the broccoli florets in the dressing/marinade, then arrange them on the same the baking sheet with the tofu. Roast for 10 to 15 minutes, until all the edges are lightly browned. Taste, and sprinkle with a little salt, as needed.

Whisk the chopped basil into the remaining marinade to form a dressing. If it is too thick, add a lit-tle water, more lime juice and/or more oil to thin it out.

Serve the roasted tofu and broccoli hot over bowls of brown rice. Add the sprouts, toasted sun-flower seeds and drizzles of the basil-flecked dressing. Garnish with basil leaves if desired.

NOTE: Toast the sunflower seeds in a small skillet over medium heat; cook, stirring, until they become fragrant and start to take on a little colour, 2 to 3 min-utes. Let cool completely before using.

Do you have the habit of con-stantly checking Facebook or other social media sites

while driving, in a work meeting, or at other times? Beware, it could lead to a deficiency in the balance between two systems in the brain, researchers warn.

The findings showed that when there is an imbalance between two cognitive-behavioural systems in the human brain, there is a higher rate of problematic use of social networking sites.

In the study, researchers from the DePaul University in the US applied the dual system perspec-tive -- an established theory in cognitive psychology and neuro-science -- which holds that humans have two different mechanisms in

their brain that influence their decision-making.

While System 1 is automatic and reactive, quickly triggered, often subconsciously, in reaction to stim-ulus such as a sight of or notifications from social media, System 2 is a reflective, reasoning system that moves more slowly, regulates cognitions and controls behaviours, according to Hamed Qahri-Saremi, assistant professor at DePaul University.

The second system can help individuals control impulses and behaviours that are not in their best interest, he added. For the study, detailed in the Journal of Manage-ment Information Systems, the team obtained responses from 341 undergraduate college students from a North American university who use Facebook.

Intake of Vitamin D supplements during the first trimester of pregnancy is likely to prevent the development of autism traits in children,

researchers found in a study on mice.Autism — or autism spectrum disorder —

describes lifelong developmental disabilities including difficulty or inability to communicate with others and interact socially.

The discovery provides further evidence of the crucial role Vitamin D plays in brain development, said lead researcher Darryl Eyles, Professor at Uni-versity of Queensland.

“We found that pregnant females treated with active vitamin D in the equivalent of the first tri-mester of pregnancy produced offspring that did not develop these deficits,” Eyles added.

Further, recent human studies also showed a link between pregnant women with low Vitamin D levels -- also crucial for maintaining healthy bones -- and the increased likelihood of having a child with autistic traits, the researchers said.

For the study, appearing in journal the Molec-ular Autism, the team used the most widely accepted developmental model of autism in which affected mice behave abnormally and show deficits in social interaction, basic learning and stereotyped behaviours.

The researchers also revealed that the active hormonal form of Vitamin D cannot be given to pregnant women because it may affect the skele-ton of the developing foetus. New studies are needed to determine how much cholecalciferol -- the sup-plement form that is safe for pregnant women -- is needed to achieve the same levels of active hor-monal Vitamin D in the bloodstream, the researchers said. Sun exposure is the major source of Vitamin D -- which skin cells manufacture in response to ultraviolet rays -- but it is also found in some foods such as in fatty fish like salmon and tuna, diary products, and cereals.

Chinese researchers have found that a drug used to treat diabetes could

be effective against a form of breast cancer. Triple-negative breast cancer is particularly aggressive among the four clinical subtypes of breast can-cer, Xinhua news agency quoted Dong Chenfang, a pro-fessor at Zhejiang University School of Medicine, as saying. It has a tendency to quickly spread or metastasize to the brain and lungs. There are cur-rently no effective targeted therapies for this form of breast cancer, which is there-fore often fatal, he said.

Dong and his colleagues found that the levels of a met-abolic enzyme called AKR1B1 were significantly elevated in triple-negative breast cancer cells and that this was asso-ciated with increased rates of metastasis and shorter survival.

He wrote: “Couple of days back, an attorney representing Ilayaraja, sent legal notices to me, Chithra, Charan, organisers of the concerts in different cities and the managements of all the venues.”

“According to the notice, we are not supposed to perform his compositions without his permis-sion. If so, it is breaking the copyright law and have to pay huge financial penalties and face legal action. Let me say, I am ignorant of these legalities.”Balasubrahmanyam says he is sur-prised that he did not get any feelers from Ilayaraja’s office at the time when the concert began.

“As I said earlier, I am ignorant of the law. If

it is a law, so be it and I will obey it. In these cir-cumstances, our troupe cannot perform his compositions from today,” he added. He requested his fans and well-wishers to not have any harsh opinions and discussions regarding this matter.

“If this is the design of God, I obey it with rev-erence,” he said. In the comments section on the Facebook post, Balasubrahmanyam clarified that he will be responding legally to the notice. As part of the tour, Balasubrahmanyam along with playback singer Chithra and his son Charan has performed in Russia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Sin-gapore, Dubai and has done several shows in India as well.

Ilayaraja and Balasubrahmanyam have been thickest of friends for over six decades. “We have successfully broken Arya’s chocolate boy image through the film. You see a transformed Arya, and his dedication and hard work elevated the film to a new level. He performed stunts -- which

include jumping from a 200-metre high mountain set or shooting amidst 50 real elephants, without a body double,” Raghava told IANS.

Arya plays a tribal, a role mod-elled after Tarzan, which has been shot against the backdrop of a jun-gle. “The film has an underlying social message while packed with all commercial elements. It talks about protecting our nature and Arya plays its crusader,” he said.

Chuck Berry, one of the crea-tors of rock ‘n’ roll who helped shape modern youth

culture with his dance-ready rhythms but who struggled to over-come institutional racism, died on Saturday. He was 90.

Police in the St. Louis area, where Berry was born and lived most of his life, said that first responders found the guitar legend unresponsive when they answered an emergency call at his home.

“The St. Charles County Police Department sadly confirms the death of Charles Edward Anderson

Berry Sr., better known as legen-dary musician Chuck Berry,” it said on Facebook.

Berry became a sensation in the years after World War II as the baby boom generation came of age in an increasingly prosperous America. The middle-class son of a carpen-ter and a high school principal, Berry grew up under segregation but instinctively sensed how to bridge the racial divide.

Berry had played blues guitar but found that his white audience was more interested in country. He merged the styles with an electric energy and consummate stage showmanship, although he hesi-tated to say that he created rock ‘n’ roll. “It used to be called boogie-woogie, it used to be called blues, used to be called rhythm and blues,” he later said. “It’s called rock now.”

Whatever the music was named, Bruce Springsteen, one of many art-ists heavily influenced by Berry, said the man was indispensable.

“Chuck Berry was rock’s great-est practitioner, guitarist and the greatest pure rock ‘n’ roll writer who ever lived,” Springsteen wrote on Twitter.

His 1958 hit “Johnny B. Goode” was so influential and recogniza-ble that the US space program chose it to represent rock music for poten-tial extraterrestrial listeners on the Voyager spacecraft.

“Roll Over Beethoven” from 1956 was almost a manifesto of rock ‘n’ roll as the charismatic Berry urged the DJ to switch off the classical records and turn to the new genre of the youth.

Other hits included “Maybel-lene,” one of the pioneering rock songs that gave a guitar edge to a

popular fiddle tune, and “Sweet Lit-tle Sixteen,” in which Berry hailed rock ‘n’ roll’s sweep across the United States.

Berry was one of the first Afri-can Americans to find a widespread white audience, with his gentle demeanor and the usually innocu-ous subject matter of his songs initially insulating him in a country where many black people lived under Jim Crow institutionalized racism. But that changed as his fame grew. After a packed perform-ance in 1959 in Meridian Mississippi, a white crowd set upon Berry and forced him to leave through a side entrance after accusing him of kiss-ing a white girl among his fans.

“One of the girls threw her arms around me and hung a soul-search-ing kiss that I let hang a second too long,” Berry later explained. He was

arrested for disturbing the peace and left the city after paying a fine.

His career soon was interrupted when he was arrested in 1959 under an obscure law for taking a 14-year-old girl across state lines for

“immoral purposes.”Berry defended himself against

allegations that he had slept with the young waitress. But he was con-victed by an all-white jury and served a year and a half in prison. In a bitter irony, he was incarcer-ated just as the United States was swept by white rockers influenced by him, including the British inva-sion led by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

Mick Jagger hailed Berry on Sat-urday as an inspiration, saying: “He lit up our teenage years, and blew life into our dreams of being musi-cians and performers.”

“Ocean’s Eight” producers have reportedly hired a therapist to prevent any fights between its

all-female cast members who include Sandra Bullock, Cate Blan-chett, Rihanna and Anne Hathaway.

According to OK! Magazine, the producers have a counsellor on call to make sure the women get along, reports aceshowbiz.com

“There have been a few argu-ments, and certain people haven’t

gotten on as well as they’d hoped,” a source claims. They want to make sure the cast and crew have someone to vent any frustrations to, so nothing gets taken out on another actor,” a source said. The source added: “The aim is to wrap

the movie on a good note and set the stage for later promotion.”

Directed by Gary Ross from a script written by Ross and co-writer Olivia Milch, “Ocean’s Eight” is set to hit US theatres on June 8, next year.

Microsoft has admitted that it is blocking Windows 7 and 8 updates on Intel’s

seventh generation Core i3, i5, Qualcomm’s 8996 and other proc-essors to ‘force’ users upgrade to Windows 10, a media report said.

According to a report in Forbes on Friday, when a user tries to run Windows Update, Windows is una-ble to search for new updates generating a message “Code 80240037 Windows Update encountered an unknown error”.

“As new silicon generations are introduced, they will require the

latest Windows platform at that time for support.

This enables us to focus on

deep integration between Win-dows and the silicon while maintaining maximum reliability

and compatibility with previous generations of platform and sili-con,” the report quoted a Microsoft spokesperson as saying.

Micosoft is making sure its runs new silicon on latest Windows and install them on most new-build PCs running these processors.

“While there will be user bene-fits to this strategy, it also means that Microsoft is taking away a measure of control from users,” the report noted. Intel Skylake proc-essors will also not be supported on Windows 7 and 8 from July. Therefore, its users will have to upgrade to keep the updates coming.

Facebook videos continue to dominate the social media, driving growth,

engagement and media con-sumption, a new report has said. Social media analytics platform Quintly examined 167,000 profiles during the last six months of 2016 and found that 47 per cent of those pro-files used video of some sort in their Facebook campaigns, including video from any source and Facebook Live video. “Of those profiles, 90 percent use Facebook’s native video tools, 30 percent pre-ferred YouTube and 9 percent used Vimeo or other sources such as proprietary players,” the study noted.

According to a report in Adweek on Thursday, Face-book’s video dominance becomes even clearer when looking at individual posts as nearly 85 percent of posts on Facebook use the social net-work’s native video, while YouTube represented just over 10 per cent of posts and Vimeo and other sources accounted for less than 5 per cent.

Micro-blogging site Twitter will soon allow media firms to post live stream-

ing videos directly into the service, media reports said.

According to a report in the Information on Thursday, Twitter will allow media firms to plug directly into Twitter’s software to go live by opening its streaming application programming inter-face (API) to them. “Twitter is opening up its live API to media firms. It will also reveal partnerships with firms that provide back-end services for live-video streaming,” the report said.

Though media organisations have already been

hosting live streams on Twitter, it required partnerships and exten-sive planning between the two. With the upcoming announcement, Twitter’s API will let these organ-isations go live without using Periscope.
