DUAL CREDITJust the Basics

Introduction

The Dual Credit program at Lewis-Clark State College offers students the opportunity to enroll in dual credit academic courses and earn both high school and college credit while experiencing the rigor and intellectual challenge of college classes. This enhances the student’s ability and skills to do college work and aids students in gaining confidence for college success. The program is offered through the cooperation of the college and Idaho high schools. High school teachers with advanced credentials are approved and partner with college academic departments to teach courses where the curriculum corresponds to courses offered on the college campus. Students also have the opportunity to enroll in college courses on the LCSC campus or through e-Learning services (online). Students enrolled in a dual credit course are creating or adding to a college transcript. College-level courses require extra effort and personal responsibility.

This student guide is designed to provide information on applying, registering, and paying for courses as well as help answer questions about the program. For additional information, please contact your dual credit instructor or contact Sarah Willmore at [email protected] or 208.792.2209.

Benefits

Get a jump start on a college education with an official college transcript! These credits have the potential to be transferred to other colleges for application towards a degree. Credit transferability is up to the receiving institution. Check www.lcsc.edu/admissions for a list of course equivalency guides for schools we frequently transfer our credits to.

WarriorOne Card

Students can obtain their WarriorOne identification card by visiting the Student Union Building Information Desk with proof of ID (such as a driver’s license). A card will be issued at no charge. Replacement cards are subject to the replacement card fee. A WarriorOne card allows free admission to athletic events, LCSC Library checkout, and WarriorBuck usage.

Student Eligibility

• Be 16 years old OR have completed half of their high school requirements (to take classes anywhere but the high school)

• Signature/permission of school counselor or official

• Permission of a parent or guardian

Students who do not meet these minimum requirements need special recommendation from a qualifying school official, verifying the student’s readiness for college-level coursework.

Students will need to meet all course prerequisites, pay class fees, purchase required textbooks, and are subject to on-campus deadlines. In order to register for an on-campus/online course, the student will need to submit a Dual Credit application prior to the start of the course. If students register for English or Math classes on-campus or online, either the ACT, SAT, or Compass Test scores must be submitted.

Placement Testing

If students register for English or Math classes on-campus or online, either ACT, SAT, or Compass Test scores must be submitted. Pre-requisites need to be met for all on-campus or online courses. Students taking courses at their high school will be admitted based on the high school’s requirements.

Dropping or Withdrawing from a Class

If the student drops the class at the high school (or decides not to get college credit for the course), the student must officially drop the class at LCSC by filling out a drop form before the payment deadline (http://www.lcsc.edu/media/1453328/AdddropForm.pdf ). If it is submitted after the payment deadline, the student will not receive a refund. Some classes require the completion of two semesters to earn college credit. A decision not to complete both semesters will require the dual credit student to officially drop or withdraw from class(es) at LCSC. As a result of dropping the class(es) after the payment deadline, the student will have a permanent transcript showing a grade of “W” (withdrawn) for the dropped class(es).

Responsibility lies with the student to initiate the drop/withdrawal from a college credit course. Students should remain aware of their anticipated final grade and keep the withdrawal deadline in mind. Withdrawal deadlines are strictly enforced.

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

The grades you earn through Dual Credit are a part of your permanent college record. Please note that multiple dual credit grades of “NC”, “W”, “F” or “K” can affect a student’s Satisfactory Academic Progress This is a condition of receiving financial aid as a full-time college student. It is required that you have a 67% completion rate of all attempted college classes in order to receive federal financial aid.

Student Status

Students who enroll in a dual credit course are officially registered as non-degree-seeking students of Lewis-Clark State College. They are subject to LCSC regulations. To become a degree-seeking student, they must apply for regular admission, preferably before the March 1 Priority Deadline of their senior year. When they attend college after high school graduation, they will be considered a first-time freshman. For more information about applying for LCSC, please visit www.lcsc.edu/admissions.

Payment of fees does not guarantee receipt of college credit. An official LCSC transcript with a passing grade equates to college credit at our institution but does not guarantee the credit will be accepted at other institutions. It is the student’s responsibility to check with the receiving institution to verify that Dual Credit classes will transfer.

Scholarships

Responsibility for payment for Dual Credit courses is the student’s. Some high schools and school districts have set up a scholarship for dual credit students. You may check with your dual credit instructor or high school counselor to learn more.

Students participating in Idaho’s Early Completer’s Program or Fast Forward need to check with their high school counselor to determine how payment arrangements are made. See page 8 for more information.

ACADEMICSGet the grades

Lewis-Clark State College is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). We are accredited or approved for specific programs by a number of organizations. Please refer to the current catalog for a list of the various commissions and associations at http://webdev.lcsc.edu/catalog/ .

LCSC Grading System

Students who register for Dual Credit courses receive both high school and college credit for each course. The instructor will submit grades for the high school and college transcripts. Lewis-Clark State College uses a typical letter-grading system to indicate the instructor’s evaluations of a student’s performance. The grade of A is the highest possible grade and a grade of F is considered failing. Please refer to the course catalog for additional information on grading at http://webdev.lcsc.edu/catalog/Default.aspx .

Students can review their registration (current and history), payments, and grades in WarriorWeb. Posting of final grades may take approximately 2-3 weeks after the course has ended. Any questions about final grades should be resolved as soon as possible. Students should check with their instructor regarding grades.

Credit

Colleges and universities measure academic work with the credit hour. Credits are sometimes referred to as credit hours or semester hours. Credits for college courses typically range from one to five hours. Your college education will include a certain number of general education credits, a sufficient number of required courses, and electives for the major you choose. At LCSC, bachelor degrees consist of a minimum of 120 credit hours.

Transferring LCSC Credits

If a student enrolls at a college or university other than LCSC after high school graduation, they will want to transfer their LCSC credits. A student will need to submit a request and pay a transcript fee to the Registrar’s Office to have their transcript sent to the college or university they plan to attend. There are several delivery options with corresponding fees. You can find the specifics on the Registrar’s website: http://www.lcsc.edu/registrar/transcripts/. Transcripts can be requested through WarriorWeb under the Academic Profile menu, or call 208.792.2223 for more information. Remember, transcript requests cannot be processed unless all financial and other obligations to the college have been fulfilled. Be sure that all grades are posted before requesting a transcript.

The institution where a student may attend makes the final decision about acceptance of courses. Acceptance of any or all courses can vary and may be dependent upon the grade earned and the policy of the institution. We recommend that students keep their course syllabus (with course description) and save major class assignments in case they need to meet with someone at their intended college or university concerning the transferring of credits. Check out our Course Equivalency Guides for schools we frequently transfer our credits to: www.lcsc.edu/admissions/applying-to-lcsc/transfer-students. Students can search for the intended college and see how our credits transfer to that institution. However, this is not an official evaluation of transcripts and credits. It should only be used for a guideline. For specific questions about how LCSC Dual Credits transfer, it is the student’s responsibility to check with the receiving institution.

Dual Credit coursework may be recognized elsewhere in a number of ways. Based on the student’s transcript, institutions can transfer the credit hours into a student’s program of study, reducing the number of courses the student has to complete to graduate. They may offer students the option of using transferred courses for exemption from specific course requirements. These might include courses that fulfill general education requirements, introductory courses, and courses required with a major or minor course of study. Colleges and universities may allow the student to use dual credit courses to fulfill prerequisite course requirements, or they may simply transfer as elective credits. All of these forms of recognition may or may not be granted individually or in combination at the discretion of the receiving institution.

Remember, LCSC Dual Credit courses apply to almost all program plans at Lewis Clark State College!

Academic Integrity

The College functions to promote the development of all students. Therefore, all work submitted by a student must represent his/her own ideas, concepts, and current understanding. Academic dishonesty in any form is unacceptable. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating and plagiarism.

Page 11: Dual Credit Student Guide - Lewiston, IdahoClasses held on LCSC’s campus $230.25 per credit (25% off $307 per credit), plus any applicable course & book fees Lewiston High School

From the Lewis-Clark State College Student Code of Conduct:

Cheating – intentionally using or attempting to use unauthorized materials, information, or study aids in any academic exercise. The term “academic exercise” includes all forms of work submitted for credit hours.

Fabrication – intentional and/or unauthorized falsification or invention of any information or the source of any information in an academic exercise.

Collusion facilitating academic dishonesty – intentionally or knowingly helping or attempting to help another to commit an act of Academic Dishonesty.

Plagiarism – the deliberate adoption or reproduction of ideas or words or statement of another person as one’s own without acknowledgment.

Acts of Academic Dishonesty are subject through appropriate discipline through the student’s high school, with the exception of those students taking Dual Credit courses on-campus or online. Title IX, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs or activities operated by recipients of federal financial assistance (including sexual harassment and sexual violence), applies to all LCSC students and Dual Credit students, wherever they are taking classes. In Title IX-related cases, college officials will coordinate investigative and adjudication processes with high school officials. For more information regarding the Student Code of Conduct, please visit http://www.lcsc.edu/student-affairs/student-code-of-conduct/.
