• For each course attempted, you earn Grade Points based on letter grade achieved (see orange chart below).
• Your GPA is the total of those points, divided by the number of course credits.
Unweighted GPA• Calculated using “Regular” point scale only• Allows colleges to make apples-to-apples
comparisonsWeighted GPA• Includes bonus point scales for Honors,
AP, & DE courses• Used at NMHS to determine rank,
Honors/Scholar grad status, Valedictorian/Salutatorian
Note: HOPE GPA is different! (more about that on HOPE slide)
More advanced/in-depth/rigorous versions of core classes Considered for Honors/AP eligibility
▪ Minimum Lexile score of 1010 (except for Honors Math), standardized test scores, attendance, grades, work ethic
Some Honors track classes are AP (Advanced Placement)
▪ AP is national program
▪ Many colleges count certain scores on AP exams as college credit!
▪ Has higher GPA bonus than Honors due to rigor/college credit potential
Dual Enrollment = opportunity to take college class, earn credit at college AND high school at same time, for free!
NMHS DE partners:
▪ Georgia Northwestern Technical College
▪ Dalton State College
General Eligibility Criteria:
▪ 3.0 Academic GPA
▪ Pass ACT, SAT, or Accuplacer Test
▪ Cutoff scores vary between GNTC and DSC
HOPE GPA is DIFFERENT – calculated by state agency; only includes academic grades; GPA weight boost not as high for AP/DE, no boost for Honors classes.
HOPE Scholarship - (~70-80% Tuition) 3.0 GPA in Academics + 4 courses that meet Rigor Requirement.
Zell Miller Scholarship - (100% Tuition) 3.7 GPA in Academics + 1200 combined score on SAT or a 26 composite score on ACT (in any single test date) + 4 courses that meet Rigor Requirement.
List of NMHS courses that meet Rigor Requirement on handout HOPE Requirements & Rigor at NMHS on Counseling website
Other merit-based state aid depends on grades in technical certificate/diploma program.
It’s hard to learn if you’re not present! Exemption from a course’s final exam depends on your
attendance and grades in that course
Each tardy = lunch detention Excessive unexcused tardies or absences =
in-school suspension, loss of parking permit
Attendance also impacts sports participation eligibility
Stay disconnected from events, friends, and academics Not push yourself to try new things or learn about new subjects Play hookie, skip school/classes, and get behind Be afraid to ask for help if needed Not take grades, homework, and tests seriously FAIL a class due to lack of effort and participation Not think about your future and what you may be interested in
pursuing later in life. It is NEVER too early to start looking into this.
▪ Begin with the end in mind▪ Join clubs, sports and community organizations▪ Try new classes that cause you to THINK and EXPLORE
new/deeper topics▪ Take advantage of extra support and tutoring▪ Make up work when you are absent▪ Make new friends▪ Take classes and attendance seriously
High School is a great time to explore your interests, hobbies, set goals, strive to do your best,
and make lasting friends and memories along the way!
