Ducon has been a provider of quality construction for the Victorian Building market since 2002. Over the past 12 years, the company has grown to employ over 90 staff, well versed in a variety of services. “We place a priority on recruiting the best and brightest in the industry and retaining these valued team members in a supportive and enjoyable work culture,” says Owner and CEO Peter Mason.

Peter Mason is a registered builder, entrepreneurial junkie, sailor, and a lover of problem-solving. “My grandfather was a

reputable builder in Melbourne years ago, so growing up I was working in and around building sites,” he says. “It was my destiny to start my own construction company. My first job was building fences in people’s backyards. I got an apprenticeship in the building industry, and away it went.”

Ducon has been industry recognised as Melbourne’s best builder, and is capable of managing and delivering a diverse range of projects. “As we’ve grown, we’ve realised that there are a number of different markets

infrastructure projects. The company has built a reputation for working and collaborating with both architects and clients to deliver high end and interesting commercial projects that exceeds expectations.

Maintenance provides business-to-business maintenance, from large fit out and small infrastructure project works, to smaller jobs such as general building maintenance, with a mix of tailored rapid response works and contract projects. The company has become well known within the industry for a number of high-profile projects, including work within Victorian Parliament House and the Victorian Arts Centre, as well as Victoria Police and Metro train stations.

in the industry,” says Peter. In response to the increasingly separate nature of many of the building industry’s markets, Ducon’s business has been split into three branches; Construction, Maintenance, and Bespoke.

Since the company’s establishment, Ducon has earned a broad range of industry awards and commendations and has been recognised in Greensmart, Apprentice of the Year, Host Trainer of the Year, OHS Trainer of the Year, and Australian Institute of Architecture awards.

Construction carries out a range of significant projects including apartments, townhouses, libraries, schools, factories, and

Bespoke builds architecturally designed custom homes and works with Melbourne’s leading architects, and has earned Ducon the title of Victorian Builder of the Year, along with a broad range of industry awards and commendations, including Best Custom Built Home Over $2 Million, and Victorian Custom Built Home of the Year for its Cosham Street project in Brighton.

While Ducon currently has a number of on-and offsite sustainability policies in place, including waste separation for more efficient recycling, the company’s most notable effort at the moment is the research that it is carrying out on the repurposing of shipping containers, with the goal of using them as modular building components. Ducon currently has a 2-bedroom house prototype built out of the containers, and

used the same method to construct the head office of Royal Wolf, a container recycling firm.

Ducon is currently underway in a variety of projects, including works at a number of stations for Metro Trains, apartment buildings in Northcote, Fitzroy and Werribee, upgrades at a number of schools and a variety of community infrastructure projects throughout Melbourne. Looking to the future, Peter intends to take on a greater and greater day-to-day role within the company and adopt a more hands-on method of leadership in order to help drive growth. “We want to be specialists in more and

more market segments,” he says, “and we plan to expand Australia-wide in time.“

Peter feels that low margins create a lingering problem within the industry that ultimately deliver low quality projects. “I think what’s been happening is that builders have been buying less for some time now, and the industry just keeps running at that level thus delivering poor workmanship and overall quality to the client.” . “It’s about educating our clients, so that they know that they get what they pay for without short cuts. Our clients appreciate the level of information and the benefits we provide thus understanding our offer without a need to reduce prices and cutting corners”.

Ducon maintains a close relationship with a number of industry associations, including the HIA, for which Peter is an active member of the training committee. The company is also a member of the MBA, which provides important industry news, updates on market trends, and information about new products and construction methods. “It’s good to be able to take part in networking events,” Peter says, “and to be able to discuss and mingle with some of your counterparts.”

Outside of working hours, Peter can most likely be found sailing. “I love to go on the water— I enjoy fishing and going out on the bay for the day, but sailing’s what I do as a competitive sport,” he says. Peter feels that the key to success lies in an employer’s relationship with others on an individual level, not only with clients, but employees as well. “I think business is all about people. If you bring it all back to people all the time, that’s what I think will make you successful. If you employ good people, look after good people, give them the opportunity, the tools, the training, and the mentoring, they will generally do the best that they can.”
