Second Grade Habitat Diorama Project Due: March 23, 2020 Dear Second Grade Families, We are finishing up our science/reading unit on land and water habitats. We have been learning about the characteristics of different habitats and what kinds of animals live in each habitat. By creating a shoebox habitat with your child at home, you will expand on what he/she has learned in school and allows your student to showcase his/her knowledge and creativity. Have your child choose a habitat from the list below. She/He will decorate the shoebox to replicate the habitat she/he chooses. The habitat should include plants, animals, and water sources that are part of that specific habitat. The students WILL BE GRADED on this project. We also plan to put the projects on display in the gym and invite all of the other grade levels to come see the projects. We will let you know the date and time of this event as soon as it is finalized. Habitats: * Arctic/Polar * Desert * Woodland Forest * Rainforest * Saltwater (ocean, sea) * Freshwater (lakes, rivers, ponds) * Savannas Materials: * Shoebox – We have a few extra boxes at school. Please let us know if you need one. First come, first served. * Craft items based on the habitat – construction paper, sand, sandpaper, leaves, sticks, cotton balls, etc.

    Due: March 23, 2020

Dear Second Grade Families, We are finishing up our science/reading unit on land and water habitats. We have been learning about the characteristics of different habitats and what kinds of animals live in each habitat. By creating a shoebox habitat with your child at home,

you will expand on what he/she has learned in school and allows your student to showcase his/her knowledge and creativity.

    Habitats: * Arctic/Polar * Desert

    * Woodland Forest * Rainforest * Saltwater (ocean, sea) * Freshwater (lakes, rivers, ponds)

    * Savannas Materials: * Shoebox – We have a few extra boxes at school. Please let us know if you need one.

    First come, first served.

    * Craft items based on the habitat – construction paper, sand, sandpaper, leaves, sticks, cotton balls, etc.

  • 1. Ask your child: What is the weather like in the desert? Are there lots of water in the forest? What kinds of plants and animals live in the ocean?

    4. On the internet, search “second grade habitat diorama projects.”

    5. Scenery: You may include icebergs, trees, mountains, plants, waterfalls, rivers, etc. Write the ideas down. Sketching the idea may also be helpful. 2. Habitat ground:

Grassland - Easter grass Arctic - white construction paper or cotton balls Desert – sand Ocean - blue construction paper or blue saran wrap

. 6. Details: Grassland or desert – watering hole using a blue small food container Arctic – icebergs using empty white egg cartons Forest – green cotton balls, brown clay for tree trunks Ocean – Play-Doh for corral or sunken treasures

    3. Animals: Use toys, clay, illustrations on cardstock, or print.
