In the Corner with Aurey Cox

Excited. It’s the feeling a young forward feels when they score their first goal in hockey. It’s the passion that fans have when their favorite team gets an important win. For Aurey Cox, it was the experience of delivering his first knockout as a professional boxer.

On February 27th, 2016, Orangeville’s own Aurey Cox knocked out Jesus Olivares at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, bringing his professional record to 3-0-0. Olivares went down in the first round, with less than 30 seconds remaining, after Cox bombarded him with left jabs before dealing a finishing right that left Olivares dazed. The referee called the fight after it was clear that Olivares was done and Cox won by technical knockout (TKO).

Although, Cox wasn’t always a fighter. In school, Cox was bullied by others and even beat up a few times. On the advice from his neighbor, he got into boxing as an outlet in order to build up his courage and take care of himself the next time someone tried to mess with him. As it happened, the next time someone did try to bully him, Cox defended himself and proved that he was no longer a target. Since then, Cox had developed a passion for the sport as it was not a hobby to him anymore. And that passion came with a personal hero: Mike Tyson. Tyson, himself, was bullied at a young age before he came known as one of the greatest boxers in the sport. Like Cox, Tyson got into boxing not only to get back at those who had targeted him but also to boost his confidence to become a better man. Cox saw Tyson as someone he could relate to, as he knew and felt the same experiences that Tyson did.

As an amateur boxer, Cox held a record with 28 wins against 16 losses. The change from amateur to professional was one that Cox noticed but not in a bad way. In his experience with these fights, he has found the transition to be easy and one to get comfortable with. “Those longer rounds. There’s a slower pace so you can take your time. Without head gear and with smaller gloves, you can actually hurt the other guy...I

feel a lot more comfortable without the head gear, without a shirt on and I also find the atmosphere gets you way more pumped up so it’s way more exciting.” Cox describes, knowing that a shorter fight can lead to a definite result.

Cox’s career was not without its challenges. He recalls a time when he travelled to Nova Scotia to fight Custio Clayton, a six-time Canadian amateur boxing champion who reached the quarter finals of the 2012 London Olympics welterweight competition. Going into the fight, Cox knew that Clayton would be a dangerous boxer to challenge but he still put a goal for himself in the match, not to win against Clayton but to not get stopped by him. Cox’s trainer, Bryon Mackie, told him to rough Clayton up, even if it means that it would get Cox disqualified, to let Clayton know that this competition would not be easy for him. Cox lasted all three rounds in the loss against Clayton yet still felt that it was a achievement because he was able to stand his ground in face of a man who was guaranteed to make it to the world stage.

Cox currently trains at BigTyme Fitness and Boxing in Orangeville alongside his trainer, Bryon Mackie. There, he continues to develop his talent to reach his full potential as a professional boxer. Outside of the ring, Cox wishes that his reputation can grow until the point where he can start his own gym, where he can train new boxers in the strategy and skill of the sport. He wants to share the sport as a way for people to boost their confidence, as he once did. Like all people eventually do, Cox found an opportunity, realized what he could

achieve if he pursued that dream and decided

to take a jab at it.

MORE IS NOT ALWAYS BET TERAt 9Round we understand the mindset that “more is better.” If 9 Rounds is good, then 18 must be better…if running a mile is good, 10 has to be better, if 2 sets of squats is good, 4 sets must be better. If this is your mindset, your drive is to be commended. However, we want to help you get the biggest return possible on your investment of work out time. Focusing your energy and drive towards being “more productive” within a shorter period of time will actually take the focus off “more.”

At 9Round, each workout (created by a team of elite athletes who developed the concept) will work every muscle in your body!! Since the work out changes completely every day, you are using your muscles differently (“muscle confusion”) which keeps your body guessing. Therefore, your muscles never get the chance to adjust, so… NO PLATEAU!

The true key to success however, is using the 9Round heart rate training system, thus maximizing the productivity of each work out by remaining in the correct heart rate zones. The unique MyZone heart rate training system is great because it takes the thinking out of the process for you, making losing weight and conditioning easier than ever before.

Last but not least, the most overlooked part of health and fitness is Nutrition. Many of us would rather “do more” than focus on our nutrition. At 9Round, we know all too well that you can never outwork or out train improper nutrition…Ever!! Simply combine the 9Round Nutrition with working out in the right heart rate zones and this is the jab/cross combination that will produce a knockout every time!

Local Legend

Aaron Downey –The Enforcer

Right-winger Aaron “Diesel” Downey made his NHL debut in the 1999-2000 season with the Boston Bruins, over the course of his career he played for four of the Original Six NHL teams. His toughness and willingness to fight quickly earned him the role of the enforcer when playing for the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Dallas Stars, St. Louis Blues, Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings.

Downey, born in Orangeville, Ontario, first laced up at the age of 3, learning to skate in Honeywood and in the fields at the family farm. Growing up with his four brothers, hockey naturally became a way of life in Shelburne. He gained experience in the minor leagues playing for the Manitoba Moose, Portland Pirates, Providence Bruins, Norfolk Admirals, Hampton Roads Admirals and the Grand Rapids Griffins . His junior career was spent playing in the OHL for the Guelph Storm. Downey admits, “being in shape and understanding anatomy was a vehicle for me to get through the East Coast League and then into the American Hockey League.”

The winger’s hard work and dedication began to pay off as he worked his way through the ranks of minor pro hockey before signing his deal with the Bruins. Unfortunately, the majority of his time in the Boston organization was spent with their farm club the Providence Bruins. Downey joined the Blackhawks in the 2001-02 season for three games, he was invited back the following year and this time for a much longer stay. The Blackhawks welcomed him into the lineup and Aaron experienced the exhilarating achievement of scoring his first NHL goal. “I still remember that day, it was just a burst of energy running right through [my] heart and right through [my] stomach, “Downey recalls. In 2003, Downey started his career of ill repute after breaking the jaw of Jesse Boulerice of the Carolina Hurricanes, adopting a short lived nickname “Aaron one punch and he’s Downey”. After two seasons in the Hawks organization, the Shelburne native joined the Dallas Stars. He proved to be a fan favorite and his fights launched him into YouTube stardom before he was acquired by the St. Louis Blues in 2005. The right-winger had another short lived career with the Blues, playing 17 games before being waived and claimed by the Montreal Canadiens in 2006.

2007 was a tumultuous year for Downey. He was placed on waivers by the Canadiens to be sent down to the Hamilton Bulldogs but then loaned to the Providence Bruins. Downey finally caught a break when he was invited to the Red Wings training camp on a tryout basis which resulted in the signing of a two-way

contract. Downey proudly began the 2007-08 season as a Red Wing and promptly displayed his petulance for fisticuffs. In a game against the San Jose Sharks, Kyle McLaren became a quick target for Downey after he took a run at Dallas Drake and Henrik Zetterberg. More trouble arose a week later when the Wings faced off again against the Sharks, this time with Rob Davison. Another infamous fight broke out between Downey and Colorado Avalanche’s Ian Laperrière who injured defenseman Nicklas Lidström with a cheap shot. Laperrière and Downey’s fight in the first period wasn’t satisfying enough, they dropped their gloves again in the third. Detroit fans watched the Red Wings abandon their philosophy of continuously finishing last when it came to fighting majors and with Downey’s help quickly climbed the rankings to one of Hockey’s elite teams. Although Downey didn’t appear in one playoff game, his loyalty to the team and motivation proved priceless to his teammates. His presence during morning warm ups and contributions towards the mental makeup of the team, proved to be exactly what his teammates needed. Aaron Downey’s name can be found on the Stanley Cup with the Red Wings for the 2007–08 season, a lifelong dream of every hockey loving Canadian.

Downey played with a very unique fashion, he was a true grinder and blue collar type player. His crash and bang style of play quickly led to altercations after altercations which earned him the reputation of the “tough guy”. He was never placed on a team for his goal scoring abilities or as a play maker but instead was designated as the prime enforcer. He naturally became a man who would never hesitate to let his fists speak for himself, especially when it came to defending his teammates. Downey’s consistent positive attitude in the locker room helped gain his acceptance by his teammates and labeled him as a good guy to have on the team. His hockey career may have been a constant struggle, but Downey never once let it get the best of him and that is something he still stands by today in life. “[It was important] having that steadfast, that every day unconditional love and happiness for your teammates and your trainers. If you always came out with that [positive] attitude people will always have you around. That’s one thing I learned early in my career and I made sure that every day I [went] on the rink with a smile on. I was grateful to be able play in the [NHL], especially with the Detroit Red Wings. I was fortunate enough to learn to have love and gratitude and nothing can really penetrate that energy field,“ said Downey.

A Hockey Mom’s Rant...

Etiquette for aHockey MomA few years ago I asked over 5000 Hockey Moms if they had ever encountered overzealous parents from another team, and how they handled them. Many responded to the question with experiences of their own, and, as expected, this is a touchy subject for some.

The responses got me thinking about Hockey Mom (and Hockey Dad) Etiquette. What are those unwritten rules that help us all get along smoothly while our kids are flying around the ice with sticks in their hands and the competitive juices are flowing just as much in the parents as they are in the kids (and sometimes more so).

I do not pretend to be the expert in Hockey Mom Etiquette, but I do tend to get along with everyone pretty well. You can often find me chatting with opponent moms before the game, asking them about their drive, where they are staying (if it’s a tournament), about the last team they beat out (if it’s the playoffs), or anything else I can think of at the moment. I’m especially prone to doing this if the team has travelled a long way to get to us, as I like to think of ourselves as gracious hosts.

When it comes game time, I respect the other parents’ cheering and excitement, and I know that everyone can get a little upset over missed calls, questionable calls, and if the other team launches a comeback, I can really understand the cheering frenzy. What I don’t understand, however, is when parents cross the line into obnoxiousness. I recall an article that suggested Canada ranks 5th in the world for parents having witnessed abuse at children’s sports. Perhaps it’s time that we all come up with some Hockey Etiquette rules for Hockey Moms. I’ll list the ones I know, and you need to send some as well, because I know these are not complete.

1. When you are cheering for your team, keep it positive, and please do not yell at my team’s players. Absolutely no Boo-ing. Ever.

2. Please do not yell at your OWN child. Nothing makes other parents more uncomfortable than hearing the overbearing parent yelling at their kid for making a mistake, or not trying hard enough. They are kids, cut them some slack, and let the coaches address the mistake or lack of effort. Also, your child may well be trying their very hardest. If you want to talk to them about that, do it at home.

3. Keep your language clean. For the sake of everyone around you, including my younger kids who are

within earshot, clean up your potty mouth. You might be comfortable swearing around your kids, but I’m not. Respect that others don’t want to hear it either.

4. Quit yelling obscenities at the ref, and don’t follow them off the ice after the game telling them they “blew it”. I understand the groans when it is a blown call, but you have to know when you are going overboard.

5. If you are up by a bunch of goals and clearly outmatch your opponents, please don’t scream at every goal like it is a Stanley Cup winning overtime goal. The other team (and parents) know they are outmatched; you don’t have to rub it in.

6. Keep your cheering to your own “section”. Typically in arenas fans from teams tend to sit together. If you are in your section cheering positively, that’s great. If at any point you feel the need to run around into my section waving your banner/flag etc. you might want to reconsider. I’ve seen fights start that way.

7. It is never ok to cheer for your team to “take out” another player, even if that other player is the one who scores 10 goals in a game. The child superstars in the game might be the one scoring the game winner for us in the Olympics down the road, but right now, think of them as someone’s child. Consider how you would feel if you were their mother and everyone was yelling for the other team to take YOUR child out.

8. Try to be the visiting fan that you would want to see in your home arena, as opposed to the visiting fan that you would like to throw out of your barn. If we all acted that way, maybe there would be no comparisons of Hockey Moms to pit bulls.

Do you have additional rules of etiquette for Hockey Moms in Canada? I’d love to hear them. Share them on Facebook, leave a comment, or email us at [email protected]. You can also follow us on Twitter and share your ideas there.

How comfortable would you feel opening your home to a complete stranger? Under normal

circumstances, most people would never let strangers roam around their home, but it’s a key component

of an open house when selling a home. It’s important to understand the potential for theft or damage.

“Holding an open house can be a great way to attract potential buyers, but it’s important to consider safety

and security,” says Joseph Richer, registrar of the Real Estate Council of Ontario.

Fortunately, a few simple steps can go a long way. Protect your valuables, such as:

 Portable electronics,

 Jewelry and other valuables,

 Passport and travel documents,

 Receipts, bills and personal information

 Prescription medication.

Thieves know to look in closets and sock drawers, so the items should be placed somewhere secure, like a

safe, or offsite at a friend’s home.

Keep track of who enters the property by having your real estate professional ask each visitor to show

identification and complete a registration form.

Ask your representative to limit the number of visitors at one time, or to bring an assistant to ensure that

all visitors are escorted as they tour the property.

“It’s important to remember that it’s your home, and you set the rules for visitors,” says Richer.

“Communicate early and openly with your registered broker or salesperson about how

the open house will work.”

It might not be nice to talk about our kids in monetary terms but hey, let’s face it children are an investment. They are our future, they are our legacy and we invest a ton of money in them during their formative years. Much of that goes into creating picture perfect smiles. Yet, with an estimated 600,000 Canadian youth playing hockey across Canada, (not to mention the many other varieties of sport) the potential for a “misplaced” tooth is enormous! So whether it’s hockey or just about any sport, mouth guards are a timely and important topic of discussion.

Mouth guards are an essential component of hockey player safety gear, so much so, that the OMHA has made their use mandatory. A helmet and visor simply isn’t enough so whether your hockey super star is a 5 year old in hockey school or 15 and on their way to the majors, chances are you’ve purchased a mouth guard or two, or ten! Increasingly, studies have shown that mouth guards often act as the first line of defense against concussion as well. Bottom line, regardless of the sport, mouth guards serve as much needed safety equipment.

Why did we call this article “protecting your investment?” It might sound cold but the harsh reality is that we spend a lot of money on our children. In terms of pricing, outfitting a child for soccer is by far the least expensive, yet it still costs a family an average $160.00 and that’s without taking registration fees into account. (1) With a sport like hockey, that figure skyrockets. These numbers also don’t represent all the money parents spend on dental visits, cleanings, fillings and any extra expenses associated with orthodontics! With so much money riding on your child’s mouth – why wouldn’t you also spend a further $50 to $100 to protect them?

Let’s get specific. What should you spend and why? There are three types of mouth guards to choose from which can make it difficult to know what’s right for your child? We look at the various options:

Over the Counter: This variety is often referred to as “boil and bite” and comes in a package from your local sporting goods store. Typically, you boil in water to soften it up, slap it in your kids’ mouth and tell them to bite down hard. After a couple of gag filled minutes, voila – a mouth guard is born. Is it any good? Certainly this option, when on a budget, or perhaps before all the adult teeth have fully formed, might be the most

economical option for families and it still affords some level of “custom” fit comfort. It goes without saying it is better than no protection at all. With statistics showing an athlete without a mouth guard is 60 times more likely to suffer an injury to the mouth, something is better than nothing! (2)

Stock: Like the over the counter variety these too can be purchased in sporting goods stores and arrive pre-formed. However, just like “one-size fits all” clothing rarely actually fits everyone, stock mouth guards offer little in the way of protection because they don’t form to an individuals’ mouth. Ill – fitting, they often cause difficulties with breathing and comfort because they just aren’t sized appropriately. It goes without saying, they offer less in the way of protection overall and are more susceptible to falling out, all of which make your little athlete far less likely to even wear it in the first place.

Custom Made: Working together with your family Dentist or Orthodontist is the recommended method. A mouth guard made this way might cost a little bit more but you are guaranteed fit, comfort and protection specifically designed for you. Particularly for those athletes wearing braces, the risk of injury through cuts and breakage to the brace only adds to the potential pain of taking a puck to the mouth. You’ve invested this much already in orthodontic care – spend the extra on a properly fitted mouth guard too! Some teams get matching mouth guards made by roving bands of travelling professionals who specialize in doing so. These are often Dental Hygienists found in arenas during tournaments and if done properly, this choice can be a great option. (Not to mention outfitting the team all at the same time ensures everyone is equally protected and the price point is often a little more affordable!)

Bottom line? Any contact sport where there is a risk of getting hit in the mouth should result in your super star wearing a mouth guard. Football, hockey, lacrosse, boxing, basketball, judo – you name it – each are sports where your child would benefit from the extra protection a mouth guard affords. You’ve invested thousands in your little sports star so make this season, whatever your sport, a safe one.

There are numerous misconceptions surrounding the athletic world with

regards to training. I have been dealing with these misconceptions for many years, often having to correct a parent or a client on what they have read or heard regarding how people should train. One of the most misunderstood misconceptions is with respect to at what age children should begin to train, and when they do begin, what should they be doing for train..

There is no cookie-cutter formula for training, and with respect to kids, training should be based on what is the end goal for their working out. Every adolescent could benefit from improving their coordination and learning how to control their body in a more efficient way. This consists of drills to improve footwork, hand-eye coordination and bodyweight exercises. Progressions are extremely important when introducing kids to athletic training. There are many factors to consider such as: flexibility, biomechanics, past experience and current fitness level. It is important to teach basic fundamental movements such as: footwork and bodyweight movements before progressing to more complex movements or weight training.

I believe that children in their early teens can benefit from playing and learning various sports, and participating at many levels. This can have an exponential impact on development as an increase in coordination and proprioception occurs while learning new skills. Although, once a child wants to learn about sport-specific training and take their physical ability to the next level, there are a few things to consider.

Will Lifting Weights Stunt Growth? This is potentially the most widespread debate among training for children. The American Academy of Pediatrics even recommends strength training for kids ages eight and up. Despite this, the confusion remains, and one of the most common concerns I hear about is concern surrounding stunted growth. Coach Mike Tromello addressed this concern in his article, It Will NOT Stunt Growth: Strength Programming for the Adolescent Athlete. He highlights how various studies have offered proof that multi-joint movements can, in fact, increase ones HGH and testosterone levels. These are the hormones responsible for growth and development of the body.

The real factor which can result in stunting growth are coaching mistakes, lack of education, human error, not understanding movement patterns or mobility, and injuring a child. That can stunt their growth, not weightlifting. Weight training is one of the safest things a young athlete can do when taught correctly, having only a 0.0035% injury occurrence rate according to USA Weightlifting.

In my opinion, children and weight training can be a very useful tool to develop athletic ability, coordination, physical maturity and strength. Despite the positives, there are negatives associated with adolescent training when not performed correctly. Due to these negatives, it is highly recommended to find a trusted professional who can correctly teach and train such movements.

Benefits of Strength Training During YouthNot only is strength training safe for kids when done properly, but it has numerous benefits. As outlined in Doug Dupont’s article, Fit Kids Are Healthier and Happier, research suggests kids who are stronger and more conditioned, perform better in school and are less likely to engage in unhealthy activities. Strength training has also been linked to improved athletic performance. In his article, Kids Who Lift Weights Are Better at Soccer, coach Jeff Barnett, described one study that observed youth soccer players for 26 weeks. In the end, the soccer players who added a strength training program performed at a higher level than those who simply practiced soccer. And as Jeff pointed out, strength training is probably a lot safer than soccer practice. These points have great application for the overall development of adolescents. I believe teaching kids to move in a more effective way can help their posture as they grow older, making sitting in class more comfortable and helping them maintain great posture with confidence. The mental and cognitive benefits are important, as well as, improved physical ability can drastically improve confidence, and mental stimulation of learning complex tasks.

I have worked with many adolescent kids and most parents find strength training to be a real game changer for their kids, not only in terms of athletic performance, but also when it comes to confidence, focus, and happiness.

Chad Warren is the Director of High Performance at the Athlete Institute in Orangeville, Ontario. He has worked with countless athletes, ranging from adolescent to Olympic, as well as, professional athletes. He is currently responsible for athlete development for some of the best athletes our country has to offer. He is a Strength and Conditioning Coach (CSCS), and holds his Masters of Science in Psychology.

Don’t Watch the People You Love Fall Through the Cracks Anymore‘’ I can’t do it!”, “I don’t know anything!” “I’m stupid!”

People with learning disabilities say this quite often. The reality is, they aren’t stupid, but they do learn differently. Most people with learning problems have run the gamut of tutoring, psychological counselling, and learning programs. Schools are at a loss to help, and these people often fall through the cracks.

Someone with a learning disability has a brain that doesn’t function like everyone else’s. It doesn’t mean they can’t learn; it means that they learn differently. It also means that traditional drill and kill tutoring will not work.

Recently, a learning center with a difference has opened in the Orangeville area. It uses the science of neuroplasty (Brain-training) to reduce the severity of, or completely correct, many learning disabilities.

As infants, our brains are always learning and making new connections, but sometimes, the information doesn’t make the proper connections. Even with traditional treatments, many of these “misinterpretations” become permanent causing the child to lag behind. These children and adults feel inferior to others and never reach their full potential.

The Excel Strategic Learning Center is the only one of its kind in the region. They offer brain-training programs that provide quick and often, life altering results. Yes, this is a big statement, but the scientific results are there to back up the claims. They use three scientifically proven methods tailored to help their clients overcome their learning disability.

Cellfield is an audio-visual program that treats dyslexia and other reading problems. It is used worldwide, but has only recently come Canada. During the 3 month program, a person will see, on average, gains of 2 to 6 years in reading skills. “I have been working with a 10 year old girl,” states Juanita McLeod, the owner of center. “At the beginning, she was reading like a 4 year old. Now, she is reading the National Geographic Children’s magazines. Her self-esteem has skyrocketed, and for her, the sky is the limit.”

The Tomatis Method® is a music therapy that uses classical music tuned to specific frequencies that stimulate different parts of the brain. What makes this music program unique is the headset containing a bone-conductor which causes the brain to hear the music a split second before the

ear can transmit the signal. Tomatis® has successfully treated PDD, Autism, anxiety, stress, and memory problems. “Usually, we see small changes in a few days, but over the course of the 8-week treatment session, the changes can be dramatic.”

The Interactive Metronome Method helps regulate timing issues in the brain. It is helps brain injury victims regain motor control, athletes improve their speed and coordination, and musicians refine their timing. This method uses a computer program as well as hand and foot sensors, and audio stimuli to help clients perform the tasks on the beat. “Most kids see it as a video game, and they love it,” says Mrs. McLeod.

You could spend thousands on tutors and learning programs that produce limited results and that take many, many hours out of an already busy day. Or, you could invest in relatively rapid treatments that have seen nothing but positive results in the rest of the world.

If you would like more information on these programs, contact the

Excel Strategic Learning Center at 519-939-0617 or visit their website
