Dundee Rep Theatre Artistic Director Recruitment 2016

Dundee Rep Ensemble is Scotland’s only full time company of actors, and holds a reputation as one of the UK’s foremost theatre companies, performing at home in Tay Square, and touring locally, nationally and internationally.

Scottish Dance Theatre is Scotland’s principal contemporary dance company and Scotland’s research engine for dance. Pioneering new ways to create and distribute dance across all scales, the company commission work by pre eminent artists in many fields whose practice is outstanding and assured in its relationship with audiences.

Across DRTL our Creative Learning programme works with an average of 30,000 participants and delivers over 1,000 workshops a year. It engages with members of the community through Youth Theatre groups, the Community Company, the Illuminate Ensemble (Dundee Rep’s ensemble for actors with learning disabilities), dance classes, community dance groups, work experience participants, its education, skills and training programmes, a Dramatherapy therapy service – the UK’s only theatre-based Dramatherapy service for young people (funded by Comic Relief) and adults (funded by NHS Tayside and DCC); and apprenticeships.

DRTL has a long history of pioneering practice with equalities, diversity and inclusion, having hosted Scotland’s first Dance Agent for Change, serving as one of Creative Scotland’s inaugural PEP participants and staging a ground breaking production in 2015 in collaboration with Graeae Theatre Company.

In September 2015, Nick Parr joined the organisation as our new Chief Executive with a brief from the Board of Directors

to review DRTL’s structure and culture, to ensure that the organisation operates at the highest level of both governance best practice and artistic excellence; with a commercial mind-set and a commitment to equalities, diversity and inclusion.

As part of this high level review, professional advisors are working alongside senior managers to help deliver reform in organisational and cultural development through the creation of new mission, vision and values.

DRTL’s new Action Plan (devised from the two business plans, the two Creative Scotland RFO agreements and staff ideas and feedback) is in place and guides the company through to the end of the current RFO funding agreement in March 2018.

Situated in the Tay estuary, Dundee is Scotland’s sunniest city. When you visit Dundee you will see a city transformed. The redevelopment of Dundee city Waterfront is reconnecting Dundee city centre to the River Tay.

Opening to the public in 2018, the V&A Museum of Design Dundee will be a centre for design and will add further acclaim to the city’s culture product, including the Rep. The city already uses culture as the catalyst for social and economic growth, with the V&A adding to the existing offer.

Collaboration between cultural agencies in the city is extensive. Dundee is the UK’s only UNESCO City of Design – brought about as a direct result of partnership working and a shared vision for the regeneration of the city.

Dundee Rep Theatre Artistic Director Recruitment 2016The Rep Ensemble Dundee Rep Ensemble was established by

Hamish Glen in 1999 with a mission to bring together a permanent full-time company of actors, the only company of its kind in Scotland. Under the leadership of James Brining and Dominic Hill the Ensemble was restructured from the original fourteen, to six permanent members plus two graduates who joined the company for a period of one year.

While this principle structure of the Ensemble remains to this day, in recent years contracts were configured to reflect a more programme responsive and flexible working relationship. New Ensemble members are now contracted on a maximum twenty three month term, with Graduate members joining for between six and eleven months. Three Ensemble members remain on a permanent contract, with a further one serving as an associate member and returning on a mutually agreed basis only.
