My dear friends,
It’s now 14 years since the Millennium (hard to believe, isn’t it?), and one of the things many of our villages did was to erect new marker stones for their parishes. They not only gave each village a new sense of identity for the new century, but they also, perhaps unwittingly, reminded me of an ancient tradition – Beating the Bounds.
Rector’s Letter
In the days before maps and a real knowledge of the countryside beyond one’s own back door, the Vicar and Church Wardens would take a party around the parish boundaries, reminding the people where their responsibilities started and ended, and praying for the parish as they travelled. It used to be called ‘a-ganging’ and one priest in 1597 recorded it took him six days to get around his parish in Manchester. Perhaps if I took a parish a day, I could equal his record!! But what this also does this month is to remind me that we will have new Church Wardens taking office for us in our parishes. These are legally constituted positions in the church, they are important positions of leadership, yet with the support of the whole PCC they need not be onerous. We have received outstanding service from those for whom it is time to retire from office, and I know we will receive outstanding commitment and service from those who continue in these positions. But we do have some vacancies which need filling, and I hope that as churches you will pray that the right people are raised up for these positions. It may well be YOU! Don’t think to yourself “I couldn’t possibly” – you almost certainly could, so please don’t hesitate. On the 15th May the Archdeacon will formally swear in our Wardens at Saltford, and so we will begin a new church year under God. Pray for your PCC and pray for your Wardens. They play a vitally important part in our church life.
The month of May also brings with it a surge of weddings and baptisms in our churches. These celebrations are always a joy and delight and we are privileged to receive so many young families and couples into our churches for these purposes. Please make them feel welcome, as I know you will, so that their experience of God’s love is real and lasting for them. We never know whom God touches through our ministry, or what effect it might have on them. But I do believe that a sincere welcome and a pleasant smile goes a long way towards a Godly experience!
Yours in Christ,Charles Roberts

Dear friends,
HE IS RISEN! HE IS RISEN INDEED!
Who? Jesus, of course. After the long season of Lent, Easter Sunday arrived and, as happens each
Parish Notes
year, Christians across the world are able to give this great shout of joy as we celebrate the Easter season. Why? Because when Jesus died for us on the cross, he put all things right with God, and opened the doors for all who proclaim his holy name to become adopted children of God and inheritors of eternal life. Now that’s really something to shout about!
The big event in your church this month is our open day on Saturday 17 May – you’ll find details elsewhere – when you can find out more about plans to update the church whilst cherishing its history, of course. Do come if you possibly can.
Now we are back in our normal routine, our clubs and meetings resume: St Michael’s Tea-Time Mix (for under 11s) …in school on 1 May. All primary age children welcome at 3.15pm, with parents joining in for the last half hour at 4.15.
Filling StationGreat worship, coffee and cakes – a modern way to spend time with God. We welcome Patrick Whitworth, author, teacher and priest, as our speaker; this month at The Pelly, Chew Magna. 7.30pm, Thursday 22nd.
God bless you all,
Sandra Lovern
Christian Aid
Christian Aid week this year is 11th – 17th May.
You will find enclosed in your Parish Magazine the gift envelope for Christian Aid. These will collected by your local Christian Aid representative. If you prefer, you can pop it through the letter box of Jean Blewitt, Linden Lea, Downs Road.
Hello friends,God has made lots of promises
to his people and he always keeps them.
Do you remember the story of Noah and his Ark? Noah built the Ark and stored up animals after God told him of his plan to flood the entire planet.
When the flood was over and Noah and his animals could return to the land, God promised that it would never happen again.
To show that he would keep his word, he created rainbows.
I love it when I see one when we’re playng in our fields. I always feel safe having a reminder that God keeps his promises.
Love Barney
Remember with a rainbowI promise every living creature that the earth and those living on it will never again be destroyed by a flood. The rainbow … will be my sign to you. Genesis 9:11-12 (NIV)
Why did the
pony cough?
He was a little
hoarse!
Dear God, thank you for your gift of rainbows. They light up the sky and remind
us that you created everything. Amen.
How do you know when there is an elephant under your bed? Your nose touches the ceiling.

Dundry Safari Supper
Come and meet new friends and catch up with old, on the Safari Supper being held on the evening of Saturday 21 June (please note change of date to that originally advertised on the Dundry calendar) in aid of St Michael’s Church, Dundry (building fund). If you’ve never experienced this event, then you’re in for a real treat as we all travel around the village enjoying the hospitality of those opening up their homes to host 6 guests for either a starter, main course or dessert before all meeting up for coffee and a chat at the end of the evening.
To make the event a success, we need volunteers to host courses, though there are also spaces for ‘travellers’ - those that visit homes without hosting at all.
The cost will be just £12.50 per person for travellers, £6.50 pp for those hosting a starter or dessert and £3.50 pp for those hosting a main course. To find out more, or to ‘sign up’, please contact Julie or Kevin Smith on 9784209 before the end of May.
St Michael’s Tower
This year the tower will be open on 17 May from 12:00–3.30pm and then on 14 June, 12 July, 9 August and 13 September when the times will be from 2–4pm.

Dundry C of E Primary SchoolThe small school making a BIG difference!
As you are aware, we take a great deal of pride in the many skills of our pupils and look for different ways of developing those skills. Over the course of the year, all classes (including Rowan!) have the opportunity to plan one of our national fundraising days.
It was the turn of Rowan Class on Thursday 6th March. They transported us into the colourful world of fiction as both the children and staff made a big effort to arrive in school dressed as their favourite book character.
Apart from Goldilocks, Cinderella and Captain Hook there was Gangster Granny, Where’s Wally and Harry Potter. Thank you to staff and parents for their work in making this a fun day.
We also took part in Sport Relief, with Willow class organising sport activities to raise money for this national charity day. Fundraising activities included coming to school looking sporty for 50p to taking part in fun games. Overall, £82 was raised through the children’s hard work.
Through Bristol Water’s Eco School programme, Dundry C of E Primary School has risen to the challenge to promote water efficiency. The Eco School programme encourages children to look at their water use in school and at home and make sure they are not being wasteful.
Sandra Sandy, Bristol Water’s Schools Co-ordinator, visited us to present our certificate of achievement and our water saving devices. Based on the devices that have been ordered, our efforts have made a calculated saving of 318000 litres of water per year which equates to a financial saving of £1656.00!
And in the lead up to the Easter holidays, we were proud to support the Chew Valley Free Range Egg Hunt by decorating and displaying our giant egg, all in aid of the ‘Harvey Hext’ Appeal.
Finally, those keen Gromit watchers among you will have noticed our Gromit had a new outfit for March. He has been outfitted for Mother’s Day, bringing some much needed colour after the rain of this winter. His April outfit includes a fetching Easter bonnet. What ever will his mystery dresser think of next!
With best wishes; Rhiannon Price, Headteacher
Dundry WI
March gave us an interesting talk from Bernard Tapp who took us on his travels in South America.
The merry month of May looks as if it will be quite a busy one for us. The Group Meeting on 14th May with Lesley Pearse as speaker should be a good one – WI trading stall, Country Markets, raffle and lovely refreshments all to be had. There may still be a few non members spaces available if you are interested. Contact me (Lesley) on 0117 9642377. The regular meeting on 21st May is resolutions evening and we will be debating a topical issue to lobby the ‘powers that be’. The subject this year is the need for more organ donors for transplants. The evening will be rounded off with a surprise activity.
We also hope to be helping with refreshments at the St Michael’s Church event on 17th May – a chance to review the proposed alterations and go up the tower if you are over 8 years old and not wearing high heels.
The WI can also be found at the North Somerset Agricultural Show on Monday 5th May in the form of an information stand and Country Markets selling their delicious fare. A good day out for all the family. Being a WI member and farmer’s wife I am plugging both!
Finally, schedules for the yearly Produce Show are in production and should be available this month. Do contact any of us if you would like one. Now is the time to start planning with a view to producing some entries....

PROCEEDS IN AID OF DUNDRY VILLAGE HALL
Village Agents
Many of you are aware already of the Village Agents Scheme which is now operating in the North Somerset parishes of Chew Valley, having been up and running in B&NES for some 4 years. The project aims to support those living in isolated areas and put them in touch with services/people who can assist them with a variety of needs, ranging from mobility aids to support for carers.
The Village Agents recently held a roadshow at the Wellsway (above West Harptree) with over 160 people attending. Visitors enjoyed a free buffet lunch, entertainment, a chance to participate in line dancing, a talk from the Chair of B&NES Council, and a chance to meet with over 30 organisations who offer support to those living in rural communities. We are hoping to run a similar event in the North Somerset side of Chew Valley later in the year.
We will keep you posted but in the meantime the Village Agent for Blagdon, Wrington, Burrington, Butcombe, Winford and Dundry is Lyndsay Newman. She can be contacted on 07552 206848 (mobile) 01275 333700 (office). Or by email [email protected]
Meeting of Dundry Parish Council held on Wednesday, 2nd April 2014
Crime Report: PCSO Gatenby had sent the following crime report:1 x Theft of fuel from a service station1 x Theft from a motor vehicleThe local force area is still getting reports of incidents of shed breaks. Although they are not in the Dundry area please continue to heed the previous advice for residents to consider marking their property stored within these types of buildings by using either: www.immobilise.com or www.bikeregister.comAs always if you see anything suspicious call 999.Please let us know if there is anything of concern that you would like to talk about by contacting us on the 101 number or via our email addresses that can be found on the Avon & Somerset website.
Public Forum• A parishioner had asked about ‘Give Way’ markings at the junction of Downs Road and Crabtree Lane. The markings had worn away and priority was not clear. A suggestion was made that a change of priority so that traffic coming up Winford Lane would have to give way might be safer. Clerk to contact NSC. • The Clerk had received some complaints about a large commercial van being parked at the end of Beechcroft and causing difficulties to residents exiting from there. However, the problem appeared to have been resolved. • A parishioner had written about damage to the grass verge opposite the building site on Dundry Lane. Clerk to write to NSC to ask them to ensure that the contractor reinstates the verge after completion of the project.• The Clerk had received an email from a parishioner who had managed to make contact with BT Openworld about upgrading to superfast Broadband. She was awaiting further details.
Local Government Commission revised proposal for ‘Long Ashton’ Ward The Clerk had circulated a draft response to the revised proposal for ward boundaries in North Somerset which proposed linking Dundry, Winford and Barrow Gurney in a two councillor ward with Long Ashton (Map B) instead of in a ward with Winford, Barrow Gurney and Flax Bourton (Map A)The draft indicated that councillors were not in agreement with the proposal for the following reasons: • Long Ashton has a totally different character from Dundry and the other small parishes• Dundry has much more in common with Winford parish, and with Barrow Gurney and Flax Bourton, all of which were proposed as constituents of the ward shown on map A. • The balance of electors between Long Ashton and the smaller parishes would disproportionately favour Long Ashton. The likelihood is that both ward councillors would be resident in Long Ashton and be more concerned with issues raised in that parish than with the smaller parishes. • The warding pattern proposed on Map B showed a lack of understanding of Dundry
which has strong cross-border links with communities in Bath and North East Somerset. • Dundry has no particular link with Long Ashton but links with Chew Magna parish are still strong.• Many services used by residents in Dundry are either in BANES or in Bristol. • There no public transport to Long Ashton. • Dundry, along with Winford and Felton, is on the flight path to Bristol Airport. Councillors feel our concerns about airport are unlikely to be represented in a Long Ashton ward.Dundry Parish Council asked the commissioners to revert to Map A or something similar. Councillors agreed the draft in full
Village OrderlyCouncillors agreed to spend an additional £500 from the maintenance budget (with an initial 6 month trial period) on the amount of general tidying/mowing etc. done by the village orderly. One of the areas needing special attention was the village car park. Councillor Thomas said that this was cleared quite regularly by NSC but a complaint about litter had been received from a parishioner and it was agreed that litter could build up very quickly in between visits from NSC.
Meetings attendedCllr Laux reported that he had attended the meeting of the Chew Medical Practice Patient Reference Group on 12th March. Discussion had mainly centred on the results of the latest patients’ survey and how to improve patient access to doctors and other professionals in the practice. The survey had highlighted some problems with the NHS 111 service for urgent but not life-threatening medical help or advice. It was understood that work to improve this was ongoing. (Information on the Chew Medical practice can be found by going to http://www.chewmedicalpractice.co.uk/)
Cllr Laux said that the Chew Valley Community Transport scheme had recently held their AGM. He had not attended but understood that there were 35 drivers in the scheme and that in the previous year they had completed 384 journeys to medical appointments for patients otherwise without transport. Volunteers were still needed.

The next meeting of Dundry Parish Council (the Annual Meeting) will be held on Wednesday 7th May, 2014
If parishioners would like something to be included on the agenda please notify a councillor or the Clerk by Wednesday 30th April. You can also raise matters in the Public Forum but, depending on what they are, full discussion may have to be left to the following meeting.
