Volcanoes & Yr.’s 7 & 8 not only survived, but thrived on the fast paced activities during our excursion last week. A meeting with a rather boney, Diprotodon (a supersized wombat type of megafauna that used to wander our area) began our adventure and we didn’t let Kyle Lewis’s birthday go uncelebrated either, with a jolly scrumptious chocky cake and candles cooked by Yr. 8 students – thanks guys– Kyle’s grin seemed to indicate something. We headed for the beautiful collection of Volcanic Plugs that make up the amazing Warrumbungles and completed a short walk before lunch. We were later challenged by Meg from the Warrumbungles Environment Centre, with some team tasks. This included cooking an “Earth cake” that attempted to use as little “food miles” as possible so we cooked it in a Solar Oven! After our efforts we had to peddle for our afternoon tea which was a delicious Smoothie made by peddling a bike and everyone seemed to enjoy this quite a bit. Next came the most challenging part of the trip – setting up our tents …. I thought you guys said you knew how to do this !!! After much scratching of heads and help from Mr. Wells, everyone seemed to have success. Then Free Time !! Many parents will be amazed to know that their young people coped fabulously well with NO PHONES or in fact, any digital device. They spent ages talking face to face, and generally running about and getting incredibly grubby, tired and close up and personal with the wildlife – mostly grey kangaroos. After a gourmet BBQ consisting of bread, coleslaw and sausages, cooked expertly by Mrs. Gallagher and Mrs. Hogden, we headed off to find the tele-scopes owned and operated by Mr. Starr (his REAL name! ). We spent hours checking out the moon (no flag in site), Venus, the red supergiant Antares and many other heavenly wonders helping us grasp the unimaginable size and wonder of our universe. Before hypo-thermia took hold, we headed back to our camp for yummy supper and bed – some students actually went to sleep quite soon, others ….. no comment.

Next morning the real challenge began – to reach Belougery Split Rock – and survive to tell the tale. It was here that the intensity and devastation of the fire in January became crystal clear. Nothing seemed unscathed. Even the rocks were shed-ding an outer layer. No shade from dead trees, very few animals present – the first year we did not even see a snake – but there are many tough little Aussie plants growing back giving us hope for the future. Even though we started early, the walk was hot and tough going either up,up up or down down down . All the students rose to the challenge – with little whinging and returned to the bus very tired and, possibly, a little bit inspired by their own achievement amongst other things. On our way home we called in to Siding Springs which is the biggest and

best light telescope in Australia and one of the best in the world due to its location away from city lights. Mandy, an Astronomer, gave us a great tour and answered our questions about this huge telescope – it has a 4m lens !! and they have discovered heaps of galaxies and stars here. We finished off our trip with a look at a fantastic collection of rocks, fossils, crystals and gems from our own area at Crystal Kingdom. We want to apologise to the parents who possibly had to cope with cranky tired-out young people on Wednesday night. Perhaps the above account will help account for their mood ! Thanks to the Mums & Dads who support us in giving our students these great experiences and also to the teachers who give so generously of their time, cars and camping gear !! It could not happen without you – thanks heaps. Some student responses to their experiences: “I learnt that Proxima Centauri is over 5 million light years away and that Uranus was first called George after a mad king. The best part was when we climbed Belougery Split Rock” - Connor “I loved the Smoothie. The rock climbing was fun. When I thought it was just a hill it was like climbing Mt Everest!” - Harry “The best part of the trip was spending time with my friends” - Sarah “I learnt that Antares is 400 light years away and Venus is close.” - Anthony “ I learnt that stars are very very far away from us and have weird names like Antares Proxima centauri and Betelgeuse. The Smoothies were good” - James “ I liked walking up the mountain. It felt good when I got to the top. I also liked being the photographer and sitting in the cave” - Dylan

Hello everyone. The P & C meeting was very well attended last Thursday despite some apologies from some of our regular members. Topics discussed included NAPLAN letters to parents, School Projects as part of the Dunedoo Development package, the Ladies Fundraiser Afternoon on the 8th of November and next year’s Deb Ball which is set to take place on the 15th March. We also received a very generous donation from the proceeds of the Ladies Day Auction conducted by the Dunedoo Senior Rug-by League Club for which we are very thankful. Year 7 and 8 thoroughly enjoyed their camp in the Warrumbungles National Park, the highlight being the “star gazing” evening with Peter Starr , the renowned Astronomer based at the Coonabarabran Observatory. Seeing Uranus, which incidentally was originally named “George” , was just one of a range of enthralling happenings that took place in our skies that night. Apart from the scientific and geographic aspects of learning associated with the Warrumbungles, students enjoyed the many “team building”, “leadership” and “challenge” activities presented to them on this camp. I have heard only great comments from the students. Well done Mrs Piper and her team for organising such a well received and challenging educational exercise. It was wonderful to hear about the excellent performance of our Horse Sports Team at the Coolah Horse Sports Day last Friday. Four Champions and three Reserve Champions is an outstanding result for any school. Congratulations to our Champions, Claire & Megan Seis, Erica Stuart and Hallie Hogden as well as Reserve Champions, Emma Bennetts, Julia Stuart and Lauren Sullivan. Megan Seis proved her exceptional allround ability by taking out the Highest Point Score on the day. All students had a very enjoyable and rewarding time according to manager, Rosie Stuart. Year 10 were impressively attired as they sat their Community Interviews on Wednesday. Skillset, once again conducted the interviews which are a training exercise designed to prepare students for the more formal aspects of a Work Place Interview. Our students always receive excellent reviews from Skillset coordinator, Kerry Moore . Once again this was very well organised by Mrs Fergusson. Staff are currently preparing Year 11 Reports which will be disseminated to students via the Principal Interviews set for next week. In these interviews we discuss the reports with students, and develop a plan for them which includes short and long term goals as well as a number of strategies aimed to assist students to achieve these goals. I will be accompanied by Year Advisor, Mrs Cluff and Careers Advisor , Mrs Fergusson. As the HSC progresses we have two teachers, once again, selected for HSC marking. They are Mrs Lane for Mathematics and Mr Smith for Primary Industries. Year 10 students electing Hospitality Operations in 2014 will be supported by TAFE through a 5 week Food and Beverage Course beginning in Week 5. The basis of the course will be “Baristaship”. At this stage there will be a follow-up, one day Barista Course conducted for non hospitality students and members of the community. This week we will be privileged to have illustrator, Craig Smith conducting two sessions with students on book illustration on Tuesday. One is for Years 3-5 and the other for Years 6-8. Craig is a celebrated Illustrator who has been commissioned by the Cudgegong Learning Community to run Workshops for students. Good Luck to Mr. Smith and the nineteen students from Years 6-11 who will be competing at the Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza in Scone this week. At this week’s staff meeting we will begin a thorough analysis of our NAPLAN performance. We use this to inform our teaching for 2014 and make suitable adjustments to our programs to support classes and individual students. We also check to see whether we are on track towards achieving the goals outlined in our School Management Plan. Enjoy your week! Peter Campbell Principal

Kinder, Year 1 & Year 2

The Infants Children do their Personal Development lessons on Friday mornings after Spelling. This Term, we are studying the Child Protection Unit. This Friday we will be talking about the correct names for body parts and discussing the Private Parts of the body. This may lead to some discussion at home! Please remember cut up fruit or veggies for “CRUNCH” and water for “SIP” and, a HAT for Play Time. Mrs. M. Abbott Kinder/Year 1: Welcome to Week 3. I hope you all enjoyed your weekend. Kinder will again continue to revise the Jolly Phonics Sounds and they will also look at how “ph” makes the “f” sound. Yr. 1’s spelling words contain the “al” sound as in “walk” and their Grammar focus is understanding Antonyms—’opposites’. In Maths, Kinder’s topics are Subtraction, Digital Time, Taking Away and Equal Rows. Yr. 1’s will learn about Ordinal Numbers, Halves and Quarters and Chance. The children really enjoyed learning about money last week, especially playing “Shops”. In HSIE, we are looking at how other cultures celebrate special events and on Friday of Week 4, we are having a “Halloween Day” . The children can come ‘dressed up’ for the day. More information in next week’s newsletter. Congratulations to Tesharna Smith, our student of the week and to Chloe Woodward and Jemayah Bailey who received merit certificates, Mrs. E. Yeo Year 1/2: Welcome to Week 3—I hope you all had a pleasant weekend. This week in Spelling, Yr. 1 will study the ‘al’ sound as in ‘small’ and ‘walk’. Yr. 2 will study the ‘sion’ ending as in ‘division’. In Maths, Yr. 1 will learn about Ordinal Numbers, Halves and Quarters and Chance. The children really enjoyed learning about money last week, especially playing “Shops”. Yr. 2 will study Money, 3 Times Tables, Division from Mulitiplication and the Division Symbol. Our HSIE unit on Celebrations is going along well and is a great unit of work leading to Christmas. I will be away from School on Wednesday, as I am going to Coolah Central to expand the knowledge and understanding of the National Curriculum—English will be implemented into all schools in 2014. Homework was really good last week with nearly every child returning written homework sheets and changing their readers. Well Done!! Keep Smiling and have a great week. (Please keep the Firefighters in your thoughts as they face a very tough week). Mrs. M. Abbott

Congratulations to Christie, Gabbi and Nathan for their efforts last week at the PSSA Athletics State Championships. Well done! This week we have a special visit from the illustrator Craig Smith. Craig has illustrated many books for young people over the years, and it is fantastic that he will be able to share his knowledge and experiences with our students—and maybe even inspire a career for some! Well done to Year 4/5 and Mr. Honeysett and Miss Watson for their assembly last week. We look forward this week to Mr. Kline and Year 3/4’s assembly at 12pm on Friday in the hall. Selected Year 6 students will accompany Mr. Smith to the Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza later this week. Mr. Smith has been work-ing with Year 6 since last term, and this will be a great experience for them. Next week we will be holding two ‘Healthy Ears Days’ on Tuesday 29th and Wed 30th October. These days will include class sessions presented by teachers from the Western Area Hearing Support Team, an in-service for all staff, and sessions presented at Dunedoo Preschool and St Michael’s. The aim is to raise awareness of hearing issues in children and demonstrate simple effective ways to keep our ears healthy. A reminder that applications for Year 5 students for consideration for entry to a selective high school in 2015 are required by mid-November. For more information please contact me at school, or visit www.schools.nsw.edu.au/shsplacement . As always, if you have anything to discuss, please contact me at school. Enjoy your week. Year 3/4: Last week Year 3-4 began their first woodwork project. We are making floating ducks out of balsa wood and the students are having a great time demonstrating how handy they are. We will finish them this week and be able to show them at our assembly. Also in class this week, we continue our work on procedures and finish our quirky letter rules in handwriting. In Maths, Year 3 will be looking at number patterns and finding simpler ways to solve mathematical problems. Our news topic this week is ‘Local News’. Don’t forget our assembly is this Friday from 12pm. We hope to see you there. Have a great week. Mr. B. Kline

Year 4/5: Hello and welcome to Week 3 Term 4. Firstly, thank you to all the students who participated in the running of our Class Assembly. You all did a fantastic job!!! Now down to business… Our Science topic for Term 4 is “Eating out” and H.S.I.E topic for Term 4 is “Australia, you’re standing in it”. Also, I was so im-pressed with the way Year 4 picked up multiplication of 2 and 3 digit numbers last week after our short break! Great work guys! We will continue to consolidate our multiplication skills for the remainder of the year (and division of course), whilst we focus on other topics. This week we will continue to get stuck into decimals. You can help at home by letting your child help when shop-ping, or by pointing out decimals we use everyday (in cooking, distances, sport, times and of course - money!). Don’t forget that there is only 65 days until Christmas! Have a great week everyone! Mr. A. Honeysett

Year 5/6: Year 5/6 are studying a mini-unit on disasters in English at the moment, with the aim of learning more about writing factual recounts. This week students will research a disaster in class and prepare a factual recount. I will be away at a Focus-On-Reading in-service this Tuesday, and National Curriculum Planning Day with Mrs. Abbott on Wednesday. Students will continue with normal class routines whilst I am away. This Thursday Year 6 begin their Personal Development lessons on puberty. During this time Year 5 will be completing set work whilst super-vised by Mr. Honeysett and Mr. Kline. Mr. J. Wilson

Hello for Week 3 Sports Uniforms that were ordered last term arrived late last week and are ready for collection. Please remember to get any uniform orders in by Friday 25th October. The Slush Puppie machine should be up and running after tomorrow. Please use the Summer Menu (copy attached) until Term 2 of next year. There are a few changes that seem to be more popular over the summer months. For the moment, Sports Uniforms are the same price, however, I have been advised by the Company that there will be a price rise in the near future. I hope everyone likes the changes to the Summer Menu—please remem-ber I am open to suggestions. Thank you Jenny Farley

Wednesday 16th October, Carly Cowell, Rhiannon Barnes, Justin Robertson and I ventured to Dubbo Western Plains Zoo for “Meet a Keeper”. The day began slowly with everyone, eventually, ready to go (Barnsey!!!) When we finally got to the Zoo, we went to the educational room, where we sat and watch a powerpoint presentation regarding the different career paths available in the Zoo Industry. As part of this, we had the opportunity to see the breeding enclosures of the Tasmanian Devils and see what is being done to reduce T.D. (Tumour Disease) within the species. We were fortunate enough to handle a baby Crocodile, a Green Frog, a Carpet Python, a Shingle-backed Lizard, a Blue Tongue and, “Norman” the Koala!! After lunch, we toured the Zoo, stopping by the Tigers where we were treated to a back-stage visit with the Keeper, showing us how to correctly manoeuvre Tigers around the facility, minimising risk to Keepers and Tourists. The Meerkats provided lots of entertainment with Justin and wanting to bring a few home. The Siamangs were the loudest of all the animals, being audible from one side of the Zoo to the other. On behalf of the students, I would like to thank Mrs. Fergusson and the Staff at Western Plains Zoo for this truly amazing experience. Bradley Squire

Beginner’s Ukulele Workshops for Adults and Children in Dunedoo.

Have you always wanted to learn a musical instrument but thought you couldn’t?  Mick and Nikki Legge, Ukulele teachers

from the Central Coast, are on their way to Kangaroo Island where they have been commissioned to teach and, not to let a

chance go by, they have requested a stopover in Dunedoo to provide a fun opportunity for Dunedoo, Coolah and Mendooran

residents to learn, play, sing and have fun.

Mick and Nikki belong to the Myall Lakes Ukestra at Tea Gardens and play at music festivals in several eastern states and two

local bands. Mick is the maker of quality musical instruments on their Markwell farm.

No experience necessary.  Easy to learn and play.

Bring your own Ukulele or make a booking to ensure you can borrow one for the night.  They even have one for left handers.

Be quick!

This is a great opportunity, let’s make the most of it!
