    Look familiar?

If you happen to be one of those lucky devils who own the main game, you have probably leafed through the handbook about a hundred

times already and know its content by heart. A veteran user such asyourself will soon notice that parts of this DUNGEONS The Dark Lordhandbook happen to be identical to the original DUNGEONS handbook.Bitter people might claim that this is the case because the author of thishandbook is a lazy bum. But the real reason is that DUNGEONS TheDark Lord constitutes an add-on or, rather, a sequel and that someparts of the game havent changed. Enthusiastic DUNGEONS playersmust be absolutely thrilled with this news! By the way, at the beginning

of the handbook you will nd a brief list of features that are differentfrom the... hmm, prequel? (Editors note: The author of this handbookIS a lazy bum!)

    The DUNGEONS concept

You are probably familiar with so-called action role-playing games. Haveyou ever asked yourself why the dungeons in these games look the way

they do? Why treasure and magic items are simply scattered about onthe oor? Why monsters involve heroes in thrilling battles, and are yettoo weak to defeat them by themselves? And why they still never gangup with others of their ilk in order to kick some serious butt? Why domonsters usually automatically become stronger as well whenever thehero improves his talents and skills? And nally, why does the end bossconveniently only show up once the hero is strong enough to vanquish him?

In DUNGEONS we try to answer all these questions and to encourageyou, dear player, to construct this very kind of strange-looking dungeonto provide entertainment and distraction for heroes. In your dungeon, you place monsters that are idly hanging out next to their respectivespawn points, along with gold and equipment for heroes and other stuffalong those lines. Because, in DUNGEONS, you are also playing the roleof the evil Dungeon Lord, you do not do this out of the goodness of yourheart, but to eventually reap the benets: Happy heroes accumulatemore soul energy, which is what you need to become more powerful

yourself in the end and to do away with all your opponents. In this sense:Have fun fattening your heroes...

    An overview of changes

If you have not played DUNGEONS before, you can just skip this section. It only provides a brief summary of changes from the main game.

MultiplayerYou can now go up against your friends in DUNGEONS! Depending onthe map, up to four users can play simultaneously. You always play onthe same level (see the next paragraph), and each player takes over oneof the four different Lords: Dark Lord, Calypso, Minos, or Zombie King.

One level for allDUNGEONS included three different levels: Catacombs, Temple, andHell. DUNGEONS The Dark Lord only has one single level. However, all the former levels are depicted simultaneously in this one in the formof graphic sets, including the new Ice World. Each of the Lords has beenallocated one of these graphic sets, and the dungeon ambience variesaccordingly depending on the areas of inuence of the various Lords. Forexample, if you play in the Ice World graphic set, everything within yourarea of inuence will look like ice. This makes the borders between thedifferent zones easily identiable.

PrestigePrestige gimmicks no longer provide a set value. Instead, each of thesegimmicks starts out with a basic value. If a hero admires one of yourprestige gimmicks, you will receive a bonus up to the limit of the gimmick-dependent maximum value. The gimmick will lose this bonus over time, but the amount of prestige provided will never fall below the basic value. It is therefore essential to place prestige gimmicks in your own dungeon

in such a way that as many heroes as possible get to admire them.

HeroesBecause different levels no longer exist, the heroes willingness to visithas changed as well. It is no problem now for adventurers and novicesto enter your dungeon side by side with priests and paladins. However, adventurers and novices are clearly weaker than priests of the samelevel, and have lesser needs. Therefore they are considerably (!) easier tosatisfy, especially in the beginning.

New skillsThe skill tree is no longer included; instead, you can improve your skillsdirectly in the grimoire. The game also features ten new spells, most of

them provided in scrolls. Each Lord has a unique set of exclusive skillsavailable.

    Improving skills and attributes

Skills and attributes are now enhanced solely through the use ofresources.

Multiple LordsIn the campaign, it is now possible to control several Lords at once. Themenu bar below contains an additional item that serves to select youractive Dungeon Lord.

    Special gimmicks

So-called special gimmicks that can provide a special effect on a roomare now available for prisons, armories, and libraries. However, you canonly place one of these gimmicks per room.

Monster shelterIt is now possible to replace a monster shelter with a different one. Justselect the new monster shelter you want from the construction menuand build it on top of an existing shelter.

    Introduction

    Welcome to the dungeon!

A mighty hero roams through a dark dungeon, beats up unfortunatemonsters, and helps himself to everything that isnt nailed down. Youve

seen that a thousand times? Well, now you nally get to switch sides andshow those heroes whos boss in the dungeon!

Take on the role of a powerful and awfully evil Dungeon Lord and createyour own diabolic realm in the Underworld. Feeble-minded goblinworkers await your orders, trembling with fear, and dig through the rockto create tunnels and rooms according to your wishes.

Heroes will visit your dungeon, always on the lookout for treasure and

ghts.Of course, you could eliminate them just so, by snapping your ngers. But isnt it so much more evil, and amusing, to make them happy rst...and THEN take it all away from them?

  • 8/2/2019 DUNGEONS Manual En

    10/40

    10

So, toss those heroes a little treasure and a few pieces of equipment, organize some ghts to keep them entertained, and take good careof their needs. Once they are completely satised, they are ready for

the harvest. Happy heroes are chock full of valuable soul energy thatyou can squeeze out of them at your leisure in your prison or torturechamber!

However, even though these self-appointed ghters for a good causeprovide plenty of resources for you, it will not do to underestimate them.If you beat up too many of their friends, powerful champions bent onvengeance will sometimes head out to your dungeon. But they mightjust forget about their moral and ethical principles if you are willing to

    pay them a small fee...

Besides the heroes, you should also keep an eye on the Underworld.Competition is rough, and other Lords would just love to claim yourdungeon for their own!

Stories from the Underworld Part 2

In DUNGEONS, you haunted the Underworld as the most powerfulDungeon Lord ever, put the wretched traitors Minos and Zombie King intheir place, and took cruel revenge on your girlfriend Calypso (not to beconfused with phonetically similar international publishers). Finally, youonce again installed yourself on your beloved crystal throne.

Unfortunately, it didnt end there, because the Dungeon Lord went

insane (an afiction that frequently befalls bad guys) and, in a t ofvicious hallucinations, melted down the crystal throne and forged it intothe OTHER RING. One ring to bind them all and so forth... you know theroutine.

In DUNGEONS The Dark Lord, those he vanquished before are nowforming an alliance the Fellowship and trying to stop the Dark Lordin his tracks. You, the player, have the fascinating task of looking over

the Fellowships shoulders in their hopeless, suicidal endeavors. Soundslike fun, huh?

Thank you so much, dear customers, for purchasing this outstandingadd-on. Rest assured that the Kalypso bosses will make good use ofyour money by investing in lobster, caviar, and champagne. But thatsnot all: Due to the immensely successful sales of the game, some of thedevelopers here at Realmforge were actually able to afford their rst hotmeal in years. We are so very grateful! Please dont let us starve in thefuture either! As usual, you can take a look at those emaciated gures atsadandpoorgamedevelopers.realmforgestudios.com.

2.Thank you very much for purchasing both DUNGEONS and DUNGEONS The Dark Lord. Did you know that with every sold copy of the gameit is possible to feed a developer for an entire month provided theirmeals consist of leftovers rummaged up from garbage cans? Feel free totake a look at those grateful developers at sadandpoorgamedevelopers.realmforgestudios.com. Do not be fooled by the well-fed appearance ofsome developers. All those images were heavily digitally edited.

4.You horrible software pirate! May you roast in hell! Those who plunder, kill, and illegally copy software would probably even steal from a baby!...No, insults dont seem to cut it. Lets try this:...Boo hoo hoo, destitute game developers are leading miserableexistences in utmost poverty, all because of shameless people like you!...

Hmm, acting all pitiful might not be the right approach either....Dear software pirates,if you liked this game, please consider buying it. That would greatlyincrease the chance that an even more wonderful DUNGEONS 2 isreleased at some point. If you didnt like it... well, youre beyond helpthen.

    On a personal note

Amazing you actually read the handbook this far. For that, I would liketo express my personal gratitude. Generally, nobody reads these things, and I really mean NOBODY. Not even at Kalypso! Except for the editor, perhaps, who is paid to do it. Anyway, I am very happy that you are still

with me. Keep up the good work!Actually, somebody else was originally supposed to write this handbook, but he found a job that is more to his liking... cataloging YouTube catvideos for us (you wouldnt believe how much use weve been gettingout of those).

    Game

    The game principle

In DUNGEONS The Dark Lord you take on the role of various Lords.Your goal is to build the most efcient dungeon possible.

As everyone knows, dungeons are frequently visited by heroes. They areeager to amuse themselves by looting, pillaging and raising a ruckus allthose things heroes do best. For you as a Dungeon Lord, this is a mixedblessing. For one thing, your dungeon heart is located in the dungeon. This isyour most prized possession and the basis of your power. When theyget bored, heroes tend to attack the dungeon heart. If it is destroyed,

the end of you and your dark reign has come and you lose the game. Therefore, you should take great care to keep your heroes amused andwell away from your dungeon heart. However, on the other hand, heroesprovide all the resources that you need, with free delivery right to yourdungeon.

  • 8/2/2019 DUNGEONS Manual En

    16/40

    16

Two different resources are prevalent in DUNGEONS The Dark Lord. The rst resource is gold. Most of it is carried into your dungeon by richheroes. You can relieve them of their gold as soon as they have beenknocked down. You can also obtain gold by having your dumb but loyal

goblin workers dig through the walls of caves. The second, even moreimportant resource is soul energy. Ah, sweet soul energy! As mentionedabove, this is also obtained from heroes. The happier the hero, the moresoul energy he provides!

This is the reason you rst need to try and keep your heroes sufcientlyamused before you club them to the ground. So make sure that thedesign of your dungeon really appeals to heroes, with gold and magicalweapons just lying around, plenty of monsters available, and so forth.Simply regard your heroes as piglets that will turn into porkers some day.You take good care of them and fatten them up until the day has comewhen they are ready to be slaughtered! Through additional measuressuch as prison time and torture devices you can get an even greater yieldof soul energy from your heroes.

All the things you can build in a dungeon are called gimmicks. Dontask why, we gave up asking ourselves a long time ago...

    Heroes needs

Heroes have a variety of needs that need to be satised in your dungeon. However, not every hero has every need. Instead, heroes are divided intoclasses, such as warrior and magician, for example. Each of these classesmay have several needs.

Every need of a hero has a certain value, which indicates an amount. Aneed for treasure with an amount of 100, for example, means that thehero wants to collect 100 gold pieces. The sum of all needs indicates themaximum soul energy which the hero can possess.

If your dungeon doesnt meet the expectations of a hero, he may getbored and sometimes even so angry that he will decide to smash your

dungon heart. On top of everything else, that sourpuss will also infectother nearby heroes with his rotten mood!

IMPORTANT: If a hero is completely happy, you will receive his entire

  • 8/2/2019 DUNGEONS Manual En

    17/40

    17

soul energy as a bonus. But if you also wrestle the hero down, you canearn the soul energy a second time. Also, completely happy heroes willhead for the next heroes entrance in order to leave the dungeon withthe gold they have plundered so far. So you have to be fast to prevent

    them from escaping!

    Need for treasure

The hero has a need for treasure. He satises it by stufng his pocketsin a treasury. But be careful, because it is your hard-won, ill-gotten goldthat the heroes are pocketing. So if a hero leaves the dungeon satised, hes doing it with your gold reserves! But as long as you cut the heroesoff at the pass in time, then everything will be ne and you get to beatwhat is yours (and even more!) out of him.

    Need for equipment

The hero has a need for equipment. He satises it by cramming new

items from an armory into his backpack. However, you should rememberthat afterwards heroes will indeed have much better equipment andthus will be that much harder to crack!

    Need to cause damage

This hero (sometimes also called a Damage Dealer) has a sadistic need

    18/40

    18

to do damage to monsters. The stronger the monster, the greater thesatisfaction. But be careful! If the monster is too strong, it will knock thehero right out of his boots and prevent him from accumulating anymore soul energy!

    Need to suffer damage

Some heroes (sometimes known as Tanks) have really strange needs. This hero has accepted his masochistic tendencies and satises this needwhen monsters cause him damage in battle. But watch out. Keep aneye on these heroes, because if they overindulge in this need, they willshufe off this mortal coil too soon, and you may lose valuable soulenergy.

    Need for knowledge

The hero has a need for knowledge. He satises it by browsing through

weighty tomes in a library. But bear in mind that a hero with newknowledge may also command more powerful spells!

    Need for traps

The hero has a need for traps. He satises it whenever he disarms a trap. But beware! Only the thief and assassin classes can disarm traps, otherhero classes will be injured by traps and could even the Dark Lordforbid be permanently damaged before their time.

    19/40

    19

    Need to heal others

The hero has a need to heal other heroes. However, for that to happen, somebody rst has to give the good Samaritan something to heal...

    Things in the dungeon

    Dungeon heart

A dungeon heart is the key to the power of every dungeon lord. If it isdestroyed, you have lost the game. In addition, you have access to thefollowing options here:increasing the maximum number of goblins allowedsummoning a powerful guardian monster which will be glad to help youdefend your dungeon heart against heroesswitching on the healing of the dungeon heart at the cost of thecontinuous use of resourcesswitching off the increase of the level of all your monsters in the dungeon

    Heroes entrance

Heroes pour into your dungeon through a heroes entrance and start

to amuse themselves. Some of these entrances are already open, othersare still closed. You should think carefully about how many of them youopen, because so many heroes may enter your dungeon that you are nolonger able to handle them! With most closed heroes entrances, you will

  • 8/2/2019 DUNGEONS Manual En

    20/40

    20

be able to tell what sort and how many heroes will enter your dungeonthrough it. However, there are also mysterious entrances where that isnot the case.

    Rock

In its unexcavated form, rock is merely waiting for your rooms andpassages to be designed according to your whim. Goblin workers willmake your wishes come true as fast as possible. However, there aredifferent hardnesses of rock, which take different amounts of time toexcavate. The hardest of all rocks is granite, against which your goblinswill have to give up, even under the threat of violence.

    Monster shelter

Monster shelters are already distributed on every map and host onetype of monster each. If a monster shelter is in your area of inuence, you can henceforth create pentagrams for that type of monster and willalso receive additional population points. If you dont like the type ofmonster in the shelter, you can replace it with a shelter for another type.To do that, you just have to select the desired monster shelter from the

construction menu and drag it over the shelter to be replaced. Thenconrm the construction with the left mouse button.

    Pentagrams

Pentagrams are placed in the dungeon by you and provide room for acertain type and number of monsters. If one of those monsters dies, itwill take a little while until the pentagram can summon another monsterof this type for you at no cost. Monsters serve for the entertainmentof and protection against heroes. In addition, pentagrams expand yourarea of inuence, that is the area in which you can build, as well as

the area which you can see. Every pentagram costs you resources andpopulation points.

    Prison

If you defeat a hero, part of his soul energy will be given to you. But therest will evaporate uselessly. If you want to secure this rest for yourself, you can have a hero dragged to prison by one of your goblins, where therest of his soul energy will be squeezed out of him. With torture devices, you can even squeeze more soul energy out of heroes than they would

    normally have!

    Treasure piles

Treasures logically satisfy the heroes need for treasure and can beplaced anywhere in the dungeon. When you place a treasure pile in yourdungeon via the construction menu, it will be empty at rst. Your loyalgoblins will ll it automatically with heaps of gold... your own gold! So ifa hero escapes with gold from your treasures, then the gold will be lostto you.

    Library

Libraries meet the need for knowledge. However, libraries aresignicantly more complicated than treasure piles. Imagine theuse of a library like this: the hero reads various books and scrolls. As a result, he is then familiar with the knowledge collected there

and it is no longer all that interesting. But heroes have very badmemories; so over the course of time, he will forget what he has readand the room will become more interesting for him once again...There are four types of gimmicks in a library: capacity gimmicks,

interaction gimmicks, efciency gimmicks, and special gimmicks:Capacity gimmicks determine how much totalsatisfaction a room can provide. Several capacitygimmicks add together for the total capacity of the library.Efciency gimmicks determine how quickly the library automatically lls. When a hero uses a library, he consumes capacity. Several efciencygimmicks add together for the total efciency of the library.Interaction gimmicks determine the maximum capacity a herocan draw from a library before he gets bored with it and moves on.

However, only one interaction gimmick can be built in each library!Special gimmicks have a variety of effects. However, you can only buildone special gimmick per room!

    Armory

Armories satisfy the need for new equipment. They function similarly tolibraries. However, they do not rell automatically, but require a goblin

to do the work. The higher the total efciency of the room, the faster thegoblin will work.

    Prestige gimmicks

Prestige gimmicks, also known as ornaments, pimp your dungeon andbring... prestige. Prestige is extremely important for you, because withincreasing prestige, your Dungeon Lord will become signicantly more

powerful through a bonus on all his attributes and is then able to holdhis own against stronger heroes. In addition, the construction of mostgimmicks needs a certain prestige value as a minimum prerequisite.Heroes enjoy eying and admiring prestige gimmicks. That is importantfor a variety of reasons. Normally, heroes would head straight for yourdungeon heart, and gimmicks are the only thing that can dissuade them. But even more importantly, prestige gimmicks have a maximum value aswell as a base value. You will receive the base value of a prestige gimmickat any time. But if a hero admires one of those gimmicks, the prestige

from that gimmick will increase up to its maximum value. Thus prestigegimmicks which are admired by heroes bring you more prestige. Butover time, this value will sink back towards the base value again! So youwill need more heroes to admire your gimmicks.

Unfortunately, you cannot give the littleguys more precise instructions.Prison: Goblins will automatically take fallen heroes to the next openprison.Treasure sacks: Goblins will automatically collect the treasure sacksdropped by heroes, which would otherwise just lie around in yourdungeon.

    Your Dungeon Lord

AttributesYour Dungeon Lord has a variety of attributes which can be improvedover the course of the game.

    Strength

Strength adds more power to your melee attacks and increases theirdamage.

AgilityWhat use is being able to deal out massive amounts of damage whenyour opponent can dodge your attacks with ease? Agility increases bothyour attack and defensive values. Agility increases both your attack anddefensive values. Not only do you hit your opponent more often, but

you will also be hit less often yourself.IntelligenceIntelligence is always important, especially if you want to use magic. Forone thing, higher intelligence increases your maximum mana supply. Also, the spells you cast will be more effective.

ConstitutionWhile with a lower constitution, youll see stars from a mosquito bite,

with a higher constitution, you might not even notice the blows fromseveral heroes. This attribute increases not only your maximum health, but also all of your resistances.

During the game, you will have the opportunity to increase yourattributes for gold and soul energy. If you point the mouse at one ofthe increase icons (+), the costs will be displayed in the window below.

Because you increase attributes by using resources and different Lordswill be played during the campaign, attribute points will not carry overfrom mission to mission.

    Grimoire

On the left side of the grimoire, you have access to all of the spells andskilly you have learned, which you can drag into the quickbar. On theright side, you nd the scrolls which you have collected.

A small + symbol is displayed next to your skills on the left page. Thatindicates that you can increase the skill. However, increasing skills willcost you gold and soul energy. Once you have increased a skill, it cannotbe undone, so think carefully before you act! Because you increaseskills by using resources and different Lords will be played during thecampaign, skill points will not carry over from mission to mission.

Scrolls are one-time spells. That means you can cast a spell from a scroll, but it will then disappear. But bear in mind that you cant take scrollswith you from one map to another. So dont be afraid to use them!

Regardless of whether it is a scroll or a learned spell, in both cases youmust use mana to cast the spell.

    Monsters

Naturally, a variety of monsters are available to you as Lord. But you mustnever forget that the main purpose of monsters is not to kill heroes, put

    to entertain or delay them.

Every Lord has his own creatures. However, they can be roughly dividedinto the following categories:

ExplorersThe creatures are rather weak and nothing but cheap cannon fodder. Therefore, they are really only useful because their pentagram uncovers

large parts of the Underworld and they cause a major gain in inuencefor your dungeon.

Magic monstersThese monsters cause magical damage, but at the same time canwithstand very little of it. That is ideal for magical heroes who enjoyinicting damage, because they also dish out magical damage, but arenot very sensitive to it.

Physical monstersThe monsters are reasonably resistant and dish out physical damage. That is ideal for heroes who like to suffer damage, because they usuallyhave a high resistance to physical damage.

Group breakersThese monsters usually have special abilities which are effective againstseveral opponents. These monsters are especially suitable when large

groups of heroes turn up in certain spots in your dungeon. That can bea problem even for a mighty Lord like you.

BlockersTheses monsters do little damage, but they can hold out for anunbelievably long time, thus effectively occupying heroes at certainpoints in your dungeon for quite a while.
