The Phoenix City Council approved a new zoning plan for the 130 acres in and around the Metrocenter regional shopping center, allowing owner Carlyle Development to add more retail, restaurants, senior housing, and healthcare facilities at the mall. New Planned Urban Development zoning permits Metrocenter to grow from 800,000 square feet to 1.6 million square feet, and construct three electronic billboards along Interstate 17 between Peoria and Dunlap roads. Light rail is scheduled to be extended to Metrocenter by 2023.
