Durability of Rhepanol® fk –
5-times independently tested and 5-times proven. Roofing membranes
Roof report

Rhepanol fk is the name of our synthetic roofing membrane,
which has been applied on more than 70 million square metres
of roof area worldwide. We at FDT know its practical strengths
and regard this measurable success as proof of our work.
However, being manufacturers with a strong commitment to
quality, we attach the same importance to the opinion of inde-
pendent experts. Therefore, on our request, the Material Testing
Institute Darmstadt has been testing buildings waterproofed with
Rhepanol fk for a long time. In this roof report we have com-
piled for you after many years of wear, the condition and stabili-
ty of the membrane and the further anticipated life expectancy.
The Material Testing Institute (MPA) in Darmstadt together
with the Materials Department and Institute (IfW) of the Darmstadt
Technical University forms the independent centre of competency
for materials and components analysis. For them, testing is a
vocation – in the building industry as well as in many other fields.
The scientists and test engineers are renowned experts for product
scrutiny. Their opinion is highly appreciated throughout the
industry.
The standard DIN 16 731 is a recognized official quality
benchmark defining requirements for new roofing membranes.
Rhepanol fk has been tested to these criteria and has shown
sensational results. Even 23-year-old Rhepanol fk has proven to
be of the same quality as new material.

What is the approach?
Long live our roofing membranes.
The expert's opinion:
The official results of the Material
Testing Institute are proof of the
outstanding durability of Rhepanol fk.

The moment of truth for a flat roof
It came on the 11th of April 2002. A test engi-
neer from the Material Testing Institute (MPA)
climbed up onto the roof of the factory of a
components supplier and took a sample. The
question to be answered: Is the roof of this
international gasket manufacturer still top quality?
A strong piece of history
The roofing membrane on top of the factory of
ElringKlinger was installed in 1983 and mecha-
nically fastened at the membrane overlap (also
called “seam fastening”). As a thermal insula-
tion layer, rigid polystyrene foam boards with
rebated edge were applied.
What did the experts say?
Along with the customer, who had already
expressed his satisfaction, the engineer, after
having surveyed the project and tested the
material, also came to a positive conclusion. Even
after 20 years of service there was no visible
damage either of the main 6,000 m2 roof area or
at the membrane overlaps. Rhepanol fk was and
still is in full compliance with DIN requirements
for newly manufactured membrane.

Novotel is a brand name of the Accor hotels and has
more than 370 hotels worldwide. Taking accommo-
dation here means staying in modern 3 star rooms,
and for guests of the Novotel Bremer Kreuz it even
means getting a good nights sleep under a roof
covered by FDT.
There is a total of 36 Novotel hotels in
Germany. The Novotel Bremer Kreuz
near the Hanseatic city of Bremen is one
of them. Its storeys are crowned with a

The moment of truth for a flat roof
Site of the test: Achim-Uphusen near Bremen. On
June 19, 2001, a representative of the MPA set
out for the local Novotel. His objective was to
test the flat roof. On the rooftop, he took some
sample material for testing.
A strong piece of history
Characteristics of the flat roof installed in 1981:
Rhepanol fk (at that time still supplied by BRAAS),
installed on an area of 2,000 m2 and mechani-
cally fastened at the membrane overlap. As a
thermal insulation layer, rigid polystyrene foam
boards with rebated edge were applied.
Top performance in figures
For us, the trip to Bremen turned out to have
been worthwhile: On the main roof areas no
deterioration in quality could be discovered.
Also the self sealing overlaps have endured the
two decades without any deterioration. These
“official” findings perfectly justified Novotel's
own opinion. The companys management is
still glad to have made this choice.

An arial view over the Berlin housing
estate at the Argentinische Allee,
thoroughly protected by 6,000 m2
Rhepanol fk at top form.
Not only for commercial buildings is Rhepanol fk an
obvious solution. This economic and reliable flat
roof lends itself also to residential buildings such as
on this housing estate. Its investors can take it
easy. There won't be any maintenance bills for a
long time!

The moment of truth for a flat roof
Berlin is always worth a trip. Whether regular
tourists would have visited the housing estate
at the Argentinische Allee, however, is unlikely.
The fact is, an MPA representative has surveyed
the roof of the residential building no. 171 and
has taken a sample of Rhepanol fk.
A strong piece of history
In 1984/85, the housing estate underwent
major refurbishment, including the flat roofing.
In order to avoid costly disposal of the old
roofing material, Rhepanol fk was laid on the
existing old bituminous coverings and fastened
mechanically to the original timber boarding.
What did the experts say?
This exercise shows that even after 16 years the
roofing membrane has the same functional
qualities as is required for new material accor-
ding to DIN 16 731.

The moment of truth for a flat roof
July 9, 2002. That day, sampling was to be carried
out in order to examine how Rhepanol fk had
served as a waterproofing on top of the factory
roof during all these years. The expert in charge
from the Material Testing Institute conducted
the tests very thoroughly.
A strong piece of history
In 1981 Rhepanol fk was applied in Plettenberg.
To a total area of 10,000 m2, the roofing mem-
brane was installed partly by mechanically
fastening and partly by adhesive bonding.
What did the experts say?
Considering a service life of more than two
decades, the test results are even more impres-
sive. The complete roof area, including the self
sealing overlaps, were found to be in impeccable
condition.

The moment of truth for a flat roof
The testing on August 6, 2002, shall be the final
stop in our roof report. This time, the factory
floor of the company Autoform Kunststoffteile
in Elsendorf was put to the test. In order to obtain
convincing test results, again roof samples were
taken.
A strong piece of history
The roof refurbishment was originally done in
the course of a building reconstruction. That
was in 1979. Since then, Rhepanol fk has been
serving well, mechanically fastened over a
bituminous membrane to a timber decking.
What did the experts say?
No problems! Everything still waterproof over
an area of 7,500 m2. This should be taken for
granted, when considering that a timber sub-
strate often may induce small cracks to traditional
bituminous coverings at critical areas such as
joints. Rhepanol fk, however, has stood up to
all challenges.
