    This program the only one of its kind in Ontario prepares students to ensure

    that businesses, organizations, structures and/or events are accessible to

    people with disabilities.

    PROGRAM DETAILS: Applying knowledge of regulatory compliance and enforcing accessibility standards;

    Conducting accessibility audits to identify barriers and make recommendations toremove or prevent future barriers;

    Creating documentation and resources for implementing and maintainingaccessibility standards;

    Designing and delivering training for accessibility legislation; and

    Developing budgets and audits in order to identify and analyze accessibility barriers.

    Career opportunities for graduates are available in the following sectors:

    Addictions and Mental Health

    This highly specialized program was developed in consultation with recognized

    experts in the fields of addiction and mental health including Lakeridge Health

    Corporation in Durham Region.

    PROGRAM DETAILS:

    Comprehensive education and training in evidence-based counselling practices byexperienced and skilled practitioners;

    Training from current counsellors and graduates of social services, human servicesand social science programs who possess the specific skill set required to workwith clients impacted by addictive behaviours and mental health issues; and

    An extensive 14-week, 490-hour practicum in an addictions-specific setting, mentahealth agency or other social and health services provider.

    Advanced Law Enforcement and Investigations

    Aimed at college and university graduates, this program teaches students

    the specialized knowledge and skills required to work as a law enforcement

    officer with supervisory-level experience and attributes.

    PROGRAM DETAILS:

    Advanced fitness training and preparation for career-specific fitness and applicationtesting;

    Obtain additional professional certifications; and

    Gain additional skills through placement experience with various law enforcementand security agencies on an extended basis.

    Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA)

    This program prepares students to work in a variety of workplaces under the

    supervision of a qualified speech-language pathologist (SLP) or audiologist.

    Emphasis is placed on the preparation of conduct communication programmin

    after assessments have been completed and treatment plans developed by th

    SLP or audiologist.

    PROGRAM DETAILS: Dedicated CDA classroom, resource library and hearing lab;

    Acquire learning skills related to physiological and functional speech, language andhearing disorders;

    Programming skills and appropriate communication intervention techniques;

    Experience delivering a wide range of communication services to clients of all ages; and

    Two comprehensive competency-based field placements.

    Critical Care Nursing (e-learning)

    This program offers an introductory course to e-learning through five theoretical

    online courses that allow students to study at times that fit their personal and

    professional schedules; a critical care simulation component; and hands-on

    preceptor experience in an intensive care unit (ICU). Upon successful completion

    of thecourse requirements, a Level 2 or 3 Critical Care Certificate will be awarded.

    THIS PROGRAM IS DESIGNED FOR: Experienced critical care nurses desiring recognition and certification in critical

    care;

    New critical care nurses; and

    Nurses interested in working in the ICU.

    The program includes an integrated practicum component which includes 120 hours

    of clinical practice in a critical care practice environment in partnership with hospitals

    and hospital staff members.

    Human Resources Management

    This intensive program prepares students for human resources positions in a

    variety of workplace settings including manufacturing, health care, government

    consulting and the not-for-profit sector. Human resources managers play a

    strategic role in the selection, training, development and management of

    people within an organization.

    PROGRAM DETAILS: Study of key areas of human resources;

    Four-week, project-based field placement; and

    Graduates are eligible for course accreditation for the Certified HumanResources Professional designation from the Human Resources ProfessionalsAssociation of Ontario.

    Health and safety co-ordinator; Human resources generalist;

    Mediation Alternative Dispute Resolution

    This program provides students with the skills and knowledge to deal effectively

    with conflict in various settings such as health care; human resources;

    community; justice; advocacy; and education. The program is applicable to

    recent university or college graduates, human resource professionals, educators

    and health-care and legal professionals who wish to gain additional mediation

    skills and Ontario college certification.

    PROGRAM DETAILS: Courses related to alternate ways of resolving disputes;

    In-house practicum with the colleges Mediation Services department; and

    An outside practicum with a relevant organization.

    Durham College is currently in negotiations to partner with various mediation/alternative

    dispute resolution organizations for affiliation and membership.

    Graduates will be prepared for careers in many different environments depending in part

    on the skills they come into the program with. For example, students who are admitted to

    the program with a human resources background will have additional skills to assist themin that field. Students who come into the program with a legal background may be able

    to work in administrative tribunals such as the Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal; Workplace

    Safety and Insurance Board; Human Rights Commission; and court settings where

    mediation is often mandatory before proceeding to a more formalized hearing.

    Paramedic Advanced Care

    This program provides current paramedics with the skills and knowledge

    required to become an advanced care paramedic. It is also available in both

    regular in-class and distance delivery formats.

    PROGRAM DETAILS: Classroom and laboratory activities;

    Computer-assisted learning; Emphasis on research appraisal as an evidence base for patient care;

    Individual and group study;

    Intensive clinical and field placement components;

    Problem-based learning model; and

    Training and certification in advanced airway management, intravenous therapy,advanced electrical therapy and monitoring skills.

    This program is accredited by the Canadian Medical Association and approved by the

    Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, Emergency Health Services Branch.

    Paralegal

    This program is the only graduate program of its kind accredited by the Law

    Society of Upper Canada (LSUC). Students with a law-related degree or

    diploma, or three to five years of related work experience are eligible to enrol

    in this challenging and rewarding eight-month program of study, which include

    a valuable field placement component. This program prepares students for the

    paralegal profession including the eligibility status required to sit for the LSUCparalegal licensing exam.

    PROGRAM DETAILS: Teaches the specialized knowledge and skills required to provide legal services in a

    court support staff capacity to courts, agencies, boards and tribunals in Ontario; an

    Students who successfully complete the LSUC licensing exam may become LSUCmembers and practise in small claims court actions, provincial offence matters andsummary conviction matters.

    Career opportunities for graduates include:

    As a licensed paralegal: Any tribunal in Ontario such as the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and the

    Landlord and Tenant Board;

    Small claims court;

    Provincial offences court; and

    Parties involved in proceedings under the Criminal Code before a summary conviction

    As an in-house paralegal/agent for:

    Government agency;

    Law firm;

    Sport Business Management

    This program provides a fast-track to the sports industry through advanced and

    intensive training. The curriculum of one semester of academics and one semester

    of internship prepares students to be leaders in the business of sport.

    PROGRAM DETAILS:

    Numerous networking and volunteer opportunities; Student-led sport conference; and

    Variety of experiential learning options.

    This program has an extensive and active alumni network based on more than 30 years

    of existence. Alumni sit on our advisory committee, provide internship opportunities

    and assist with maintaining the programs industry-wide reputation.

    Career opportunities for graduates are available in the following sport

    industry sectors:

    Amateur sport;

    College and university sport;

    Community sport;

    Professional sport;

    Sport and event partners;

    Sport facilities; and

    Sporting goods.

    Positions include:

    Event co-ordinator;

    Facility manager;

    Victimology NEW

    Victimology is the scientific study of victimization and this new program allows

    students to gain the specialized knowledge and skills required to provide a

    variety of services to victims and their families.

    PROGRAM DETAILS:

    Focus on various types of crimes; Advocating for victims within the criminal justice system;

    Identifying and assessing the needs of victims and strategies for healing;

    Designing and delivering education to professionals and members of thecommunity; and

    Studying relationships between victims and offenders in the criminal justice system

    A practicum experience also allows students to gain an in-depth understanding of

    potential jobs available upon graduation.

    These positions include:

    Addictions services;

    Child and youth services;

    Criminology;

    Early childhood education;

    Law and advocacy;

    Nursing;

    Police and criminal justice;

    Social/community services; and

    Social work.

    VFX and Digital Cinema NEW

    Designed to introduce students to various techniques used to create visual

    effects (VFX) for film and television, this program offers a wide range of studies

    in the many digital disciplines related to the VFX industry.

    PROGRAM DETAILS:

    Study business models and concepts related to film and television production anddistribution;

    Individual and collaborative research and creative design projects;

    Capstone project includes production of a short film; and

    Production of demo reel and professional portfolio.

    Youth Corrections and Interventions

    This unique program is specifically focused on the growing area of youth crime

    and intervention programs in our communities. It provides a well-balanced view

    of correction and treatment philosophies and skills in behaviour modification

    and youth program design.

    PROGRAM DETAILS: Courses relating to case management, crisis intervention and counselling;

    Field placement component; and Learn to work in various settings including correctional facilities, educational

    institutions and community programs.

    FAST-TRACKPROGRAMS

    Compressed fast-track programsThese programs are designed for applicants with existing academic credentials

    and present a unique opportunity to complete the three-year diploma

    requirements in as little as two semesters. Both domestic and internationally

    educated students who hold a Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of

    Engineering (BEng) degree from an accredited university may be eligible to

    enrol in any one of these six programs:

    Biomedical Engineering Technology NEW;

    Biotechnology Technologist (Biotechnology Pharmaceutical);

    Chemical Engineering Technology;

    Electronics Engineering Technology;

    Environmental Technology; and

    Pharmaceutical and Food Science Technology.

    Biomedical Engineering Technology NEW

    This program is the only one of its kind in Ontario and provides advanced skills

    through technical practice with opportunities for hands-on experiences and

    project-based learning in medical device technology.

    PROGRAM DETAILS:

    Practical laboratory courses in instrumentation, medical imaging, safety andstandards, management, dialysis, terms and devices;

    Applied experience with methods and instrumentation used in health care;

    Work with biomedical patient simulator and test and measurement devices andtechnologies; and

    Supervised work placement.

    Note: a BEng degree in Electrical, Biomedical or Electronicsfrom an accredited universitis requiredfor thisprogram.

    Biotechnology Technologist

    (Biotechnology Pharmaceutical)

    Students conduct extensive experiments in cell andmolecular biology in order to

    develop essential laboratory skills. According to Statistics Canada, biotechnology

    is one of the fastest-growingindustriesin the world and Canada is the third-highest

    employer in this industry.

    PROGRAM DETAILS: Foundation in tissue culture, microbial applications, bio-regulations, protein and

    DNA techniques, chromatographic and spectrographic methods of analysis;

    Hands-on experience and project-based learning;

    Supervised work placement; and

    Understanding of the regulatory affairs and ethical implications of the biotechnologyindustry and their influence on society.

    Chemical Engineering Technology

    From the manufacturing of high-tech polymers, to water treatment operations,

    to the use of catalysts, to nuclear power generation, qualified chemical

    technologists are everywhere and in constant demand.

    PROGRAM DETAILS:

    Focus on chemical conversion processes and associated chemical principles inmodern industry;

    Practical background in areas including the chromatography and spectroscopy ofnuclear physics and instrumental analysis and aspects of environmental compliance

    Supervised work placement; and

    Training in the handling, analyzing, monitoring, processing and properties of a widevariety of chemicals.

    Electronics Engineering Technology

    This program will prepare students for design, operation, testing, installing and

    servicing electronic systems in a number of fields including telecommunications,

    computing, industrial automation, test and measurement, power generation and

    distribution, health care and consumer products.

    PROGRAM DETAILS: Students will develop in-depth and hands-on experiences in the field of electronics

    assembly, testing, troubleshooting, maintenance and programming;

    Knowledge and skills are obtained through state-of-the-art electronic labs featuringmodern test equipment and systems;

    Core subjects are complemented with technical writing and research and careeremployment preparation; and

    Program includes a co-op placement as well as internship opportunities for graduates.

    Note: a BScdegree in Electrical Engineeringis requiredfor entry to thisprogram.

    Environmental Technology

    Statistics Canada has identified environmental technology as one of the top

    emerging employment sectors in the country. This is a dynamic program focusing

    on the chemical and biological sciences as they relate to the environment.

    PROGRAM DETAILS: Study emphasis on ground and surface water quality, soil and waste management,

    recycling in urban and industrial settings and environmental regulations;

    Supervised work placement; and

    Training and hands-on experience in the handling, analysis and monitoring of awide variety of biological and chemical parameters linked to pollution.

    Pharmaceutical and Food Science Technology

    Through this program students gain practical laboratory training and study

    courses in microbiology, spectrographic and chromatographic analysis,

    processing operations and product development.

    Analysis of food; Isolation and identification of micro-organisms;

    Screening for purity and the chemical composition of pharmaceutical products;

    Study of processes used in food or pharmaceutical companies to produce and safeltest high-quality products for consumer acceptance; and
