A MESSAGE FROM RABBI JOSH FRANKLIN

Why Study Torah?Ask anyone who studies Torah regularly, and they will tell you that Torah has given them perspective and guidance in addressing whatever problem they may be facing, or thought upon which they may be musing. The figures within the Torah —Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, and Aaron— aren’t mythical heroes, rather they are mirrors for our own lives. In their shortcomings, we find our own faults staring back at us. And in their journeys and challenges, we find our own lives reflected. Rabbi Ed Feinstein tells the story of bringing a group of kindergarteners into the synagogue sanctuary and seating them before the Ark. He asked them:

“What do you think is inside the Ark?” “Money,” exclaimed one child. “A new car,” cried another who must have caught a glimpse of the Price is Right on television. Then one child’s answer rang with a degree of unintentional thoughtfulness, “A mirror!” “The child was right,” thought Rabbi Feinstein. There is a mirror in the Ark, and we call it the Torah. One midrash (a piece of Jewish lore) teaches that the reason why we hang a silver breast plate upon the Torah is so that when we look at it, we see ourselves reflected back. Yet in order to fully discover ourselves in the text, we need to open up the text itself. You don’t have to possess a command of Hebrew, a translation will do just fine to study our sacred literature. As we continue reading the Joseph narrative during Shabbat services throughout the month of December, it’s hard not see the Torah mirroring life experiences. Have you had sibling issues like Joseph that caused you to be estranged from your family? Have you felt trapped in a pit like Joseph, unsure of how to get out? Have you felt tempted by the allure of pleasure like Joseph did when his master’s wife sought after him? Have you felt unnoticed like Joseph when his brothers are looking directly at him, but aren’t able to recognize him. Or perhaps you have been as successful as Joseph, rising from nothing into a position of prominence? If these scenarios sound familiar, I encourage you to join us for Torah study sessions on Saturday morning after services, or simply open up your Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) and read from Genesis:37–50. Torah has glued the Jewish people together through time and space because its words help us understand the lives we live. The Torah is not the history of the Jewish people, but it’s the narrative that we collectively live throughout the generations. The Torah is not a scientific document that is consistent with the Big Bang Theory, the Theory of Evolution, or even physics, but it is a guide of how we might understand ourselves and those around us. Torah isn’t a law code that instructs us in the dos and do-nots of the everyday, but it is a life code, sharing with us the wisdom of how to live a happy and meaningful Jewish life.

2018 CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS

Two tax advantages to making a Qualified Charitable Donation to the JCOH directly from your IRA:

1. For those age 70 1/2, making a charitable contribution directly to the JCOH satisfies the required minimum distribution for the year and the distribution is excluded from your income.

2. You get full exclusion of that income from taxes!

So, for any retiree that is 70 1/2 or older, owns an IRA subject to Required Minimum Distribution, a Qualified Charitable Donation to the JCOH really works out as a way to preserve an income-tax-reducing charitable deduction under the current tax law.

Total annual Qualified Charitable Donations from all IRAs cannot exceed $100,000 for an individual. Spouses can each make up to $100,000 of Qualified Charitable Donations.

2018 CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS

To make your Qualified Charitable Donation to the JCOH, contact your 401K Plan

Administrator.

WAYS TO SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY

When those whom we hold close to us die, we yearn to find a way to consecrate and honor their memory. As we sit in our beautiful landmark sanctuary, we are warmed by its loveliness, soulfulness and openness to the world of the spirit and the physical world around us. We feel ever closer to God.

You can enshrine the memory of your loved ones by inscribing their name(s) on a pew plaque in the sanctuary. In that sacred space you will connect to the bonds between them and the divine.

A Pew Plaque in our Main Sanctuary may be purchased for $5,000.

Membership helps support the wide range of programs and activities offered at the Jewish Center of the Hamptons. Your dues also help maintain the beauty of our sanctuary and the upkeep of our buildings and grounds. We encourage everyone to take full advantage of the wide array of religious, intellectual, cultural and social events at the JCOH. To join, contact the JCOH office at 631-324-9858 or visit www.jcoh.org.

Take this opportunity to dedicate a Torah Commentary in honor of a loved one, to celebrate a special occasion, or in memory of a loved one. To donate, contact the JCOH office at 631-324-9858 or visit www.jcoh.org.

Celebrate a Simcha or special occasion by sponsoring the Kiddush following Shabbat services on Saturday morning. Please note that 3% of all donations are given to MAZON – A Jewish Response to Hunger.
