15:00 – 17:00 PRESENTATIONSThere has been a lot of talk about smart cities recently, in which new media technology is said to make our cities more efficient. How-ever, cities are much more than a bunch of infrastructure to be managed as economical as possible.
How can we make use of new media to make our cities more social rather than just more hi-tech? Three Dutch (urban) designers will present their projects that aim to engage the public more deeply with their surroundings and bring urban public space to life.
Welcome by Floor van Spaendonck (di-rector Virtueel Platform), introduced and moderated by Martijn de Waal (co-founder TheMobileCity.nl).

Our programme is divided into two themes:
transmedia and social cities. Transmedia
is about telling stories in new ways, us-
ing multiple media platforms. Social cities
explores the ways we can shape our cities of
tomorrow using digital media. Not to make
them more hi-tech, but rather to make them
more social.
The projects shown here are just the tip of
the iceberg of the Dutch E-culture scene,
consisting of designers and artists, cultural
organisations, medialabs and interdiscipli-
nary groups that explore emergent techno-
logies in relation to the arts and their impact
on the cultural sector and society.
In The Netherlands thousands of artists, pro-
grammers, geeks, mediamakers, researchers
and scientists are working in this field. Together
they generate an annual gross of 400 million
euros They are working towards artistic and so-
cial innovation, and they’re not limited by their
own fields. They are the creatives that team up
with other disciplines such as architecture, de-
sign and film to create the surprising projects
that you’ll see at the Dutch E-culture Days.
