BLOOD DRIVE The Student Council has sponsored a blood drive that will occur this coming Thursday, March 13th. Students and faculty signed up for spots and will have those times confirmed.

VAPORIZERS/ E-CIGARETTES:In the past few weeks, we have noticed an uptick in the possession and/or use of vaporizers/e-cigarettes in school. These devices utilize a ‘Vape Oil’ or ‘Vape Juice’ which contain varying amounts of nicotine depending upon the brand and flavor. In a few iso-lated instances THC additives have been found in these devices as well. Later this week I will be emailing more information on this to parents in a stand-alone email. What is important for parents and students to note is that the possession and/or use of any vaporizer in school is directly against school rules and will result in discipline up to and including suspension. Possession and use is not exclusively a high school phenomenon as is it occurring more and more in the Middle School. We will continue to monitor this issue and I will keep you posted.

REMINDERS:

WHAT TO EXPECT…. & TURNING THE TIDE:As we did last year, we have a clickable version of What to Expect: Time Commitments of Academics, Co-Curriculars and Athletics here: What to Expect: Time Commitments (also under ‘Quick Links.”) This is the culmination of a project undertaken by the School Council last year to provide parents and students with time commitments for a number of important academic and extracurricular activities in our students’ lives. The purpose is to give pertinent information so that parents and students can make informed decisions with regard to balancing the number and types of activities students undertake.

Important Note: Added under ACADEMICS this year were the summer work requirements for each subject for the 2016-2017 school year.

Additionally, we have re-posted a thought-provoking report here: Turning the Tide (also under ‘Hot Links’) called Turning the Tide that comes from a consortium of some of the top colleges in the country that aims to reshape the college admissions process by:• “Promoting more meaningful contributions to other, community service and engagement with the public good.• Assessing students’ ethical engagement and contributions to others in ways that reflect varying types of family and com-munity contributions across race, culture and class.• Redefining achievement in ways that both level the playing field for economically diverse students and reduce excessive achievement pressure” (p. 2)

I urge you all to take a close look at both of these readings as you think about this year, next year, and beyond. Both documents provide much to think about as you navigate the next few years with your son/daughter.

Thanks and have a great week!Andrew Stephens

What is Duxbury High School Boosters?Duxbury High School Athletic Boosters is a non-profit and all volunteer organization. We have a long tradition of supporting all of the highly successful DHS sports teams through a variety of creative fundraising events including the concession stand at various sporting events, the Annual Spring Antique Show, and membership dues. New this year, we are hosting the N.E. Patriots to play a celebrity basketball game versus our faculty and community members.

Each year, the Boosters goal is to raise more than $25,000 to assist in purchasing capital items that are not funded by the DHS Ath-letic Budget. Past purchases include: nets, score boards, ball machines, banners that hang in the DHS Gym, plaques and trophies, HUDL for use by all teams, and mats for wrestling and cheerleading. We helped pay for a Dale Gregg to come speak to our commu-nity, students, coaches and faculty. We fund a defibrillator used by Trainer Tim, and we host the Hall of Fame Awards Night for past DHS superstar graduates. Finally, we provide scholarships for our graduating student athletes each year, to pursue higher education. Please visit our website for more information on Duxbury High School Boosters and our 36th Annual Spring Antique Show!Duxburyboosters.org

GRADNITE IMPORTANT INFORMATION

** Please help us make posters to hang on Gradnite! What are the Decoration/Poster Making nights? These are being held at the homes of senior parents. Students are not invited! We are asking that you collect 10-15 pictures of your senior throughout the years and bring them to a night where we will make posters. Each graduate does not get his/her own poster, rather we scatter

pictures of different graduates on all the posters, so the more people that go to a night, the more variety we get on the posters. It’s great to get a group of friends together on one night. If you would like to host a night, please let us know. We will supply all the materials needed to cut and glue pictures onto posters, all you need to do is provide the space. Here are the hosts and dates we

have so far, please contact them directly if you’d like to attend the evening listed.*Note that this is a change from last week’s announcement
