DECEMBER 2017

Senior RabbiEdwin Goldberg

Chanukah is coming. Get out those dreidels! As you probably know, the dreidel has four Hebrew letters etched upon its body: Nun, Gimmel, Heh and Shin, and in Israel the letter Peh. The letters are an abbreviation for the passage, “A great miracle happen there.” In Israel they say ‘here’ instead. Because the miracle happened in Israel.

The most significant reference to the dreidel is alluded to in the prayer Al-Hanissim, where we read that the strong and mighty shall be toppled by the weak. The Maccabees, small in number, were triumphant over the Greek- Assyrian nation and their assimilated Jewish allies.

In case you thought that the dreidel was merely a toy, some say that the letters describe the essence of a person. The Nefesh, the soul, the Guf, the body, Sechel, common sense, and Hakol, the sum of all the parts. It was often believed that during times of persecution, when

Torah study was prohibited, Jews would spin the dreidel, also called a Sivivon, and secretly engage in the study of Jewish texts. When it landed on the various four letters, those present would quote a biblical text.

Rabbi David Golinkin teaches us another interpretation. According to him, the letters on the dreidel symbolize the various empires that have been toppled. The Nun = Nebuchadnetzer = Babylon, Heh = Haman = Persia = Madai. Gimmel = Gog = Greece. And Shin = Seir = Rome. In addition, the game of dreidel was played in Eastern Europe as a game of chance. Nun = Nichts = nothing, Gimmel = Gantz = all, Heh = halb = half, Shin = stell ein = put in.

For me the dreidel symbolizes the miraculous triumph of the Jewish nation over wicked tyrants for many centuries. The Jewish people, a small nation, were able to topple empires much more numerous and powerful.

And yet our strength was not in military might but pragmatic adaptation. We did not so much fight with Rome (except for when we did, of course) as adapt Greek and Roman ideas and customs and make them our own. The Passover Seder (based on a Roman symposium) is a good example. Indeed, the fact that Judaism survived the Roman period is due to the ancient rabbis’ desire to work with Rome, not against Rome.

So when we advertise the miracle of Chanukah by lighting the Menorah and spinning the dreidel, let’s not forget the pragmatism of the Maccabees and their descendants. This light still shines!

What does it mean to be 150 years old? That we challenge ourselves to live by our Jewish values more deeply than before and that we are not satisfied staying the same.

Last year we delivered 115 boxes of food and helped 91 Chicago families celebrate Chanukah with a wholesome meal.

Please join us to pack and deliver boxes full of holiday food, and help us to increase the number of boxes to 150 in order to commemorate our 150th Anniversary, and brighten the holiday this year for even more families in need throughout Chicago.

Packing starts at 9:00am and we begin deliveries shortly after.

We are very much in need of volunteers to help deliver these boxes, so if you have a car, please do join us that morning to help achieve our goal of distributing 150 boxes!

Join the Sisterhood of Temple Sholom and our partner JCAST (Jewish Coalition Against Sex Trafficking) to learn about how sex trafficking is devastating thousands of young lives around world…and how we can be part of the solution. We’ll socialize over a vegetarian Middle Eastern dinner, then look at this issue from a Jewish perspective, hear from the experts at JCAST about the current situation in Chicago and worldwide, and learn how the internet has made this crime easier to commit and more difficult to prosecute. We’ll also discover what we can do to help.

Invite other women in your life to attend, including students of high school age or older. Your $36 suggested donation will go towards helping JCAST in its efforts to combat sex trafficking through education and social action.

Film NightThe FlatMONDAY | DEC. 4 | 7:00 PMWhen Arnon Goldfinger’s grandmother dies in Tel Aviv, his whole family come around for the necessary disposition of her property. While dealing with all the stuff, Arnon makes a shocking discovery: evidence that his German Jewish grandparents had a long-lasting friendship with the senior Nazi SS officer, Leopold von Mildenstein, before and after World War II. His repulsion and confusion at how his beloved grandparents could have done that sends Arnon on an international search for the truth. In doing so, Arnon learns about a complex relationship, in which family, sentiment, history and human nature combine to produce a kind of denial in reaction to the worst of reality.

Zion & Zionism in Reform JudaismDahlia MarxDEC. 3 | 10:45 AM

The phrase “Reform is a verb” alludes to the fact the Reform Judaism is an ever evolving movement that never stagnates. However it seems that on no other matter the changes within the Reform movement have been so dramatic as the attitudes toward Israel and Zionism.

We have come a long way from the total rejection of Classical Reformers (“We consider ourselves no longer a nation” Pittsburgh 1885) to a heartfelt embracing

of the State of Israel and Zionism (“We are committed to Medinat Yisrael, Pittsburgh 1999), and to the last few years that have been somewhat challenging for Reform Jews regarding Israel.

We will discuss the complex relationship of Reform Jews and Zionism, especially from the liturgical perspective.
