Was Moshe’s Name Mentioned in Parshas Tetzaveh? W e have all learned that when Hashem threatened to destroy the Jewish people because of the Cheit HaEgel, Moshe said, “erase me from Your book.” So, instead, Hashem withdrew his decree, but, because a tzaddik’s words must be fulfilled, Hashem only erased Moshe’s name from this parsha. Therefore, the parsha begins with the word “You” instead of Moshe’s name. But how can any part of the Torah not include Moshe? Moshe and the Torah are one. We even call it “Torah of Moshe” and “The Five Books of Moses.” It is impossible to “erase Moshe from the Torah” in any way at all even in such a seemingly minor way. In reality, Moshe’s name is not erased in this Parsha. He is mentioned, though not by name. A name is not the highest aspect of a person. It does not represent a person’s essence. It is just an identification used by others. Deep down, a person has an inner self that goes way beyond his name. It turns out that, in our Parsha, Moshe is mentioned. The words “You should command” refers Moshe’s essence that is higher than his name. Moshe’s essence was that he was the leader who taught us the mitzvahs and how to fulfill them. T he average American consumes 350 to 475 calories’ worth of added sugars each day. That’s 22 to 30 teaspoons!

A 20 oz. Coke has 16 and 1/2 teaspoons of sugar!

“Added sugars either crowd out healthy foods, or they make you fat if you eat them in addition to healthy foods,” explains Frank Sacks, professor of cardiovascular disease prevention at the Harvard School of Public Health.

A 20 oz. Sunkist Orange Soda has 21 teaspoons of sugar! Says Linda Van Horn, professor of preventive medicine at North-western University: “There’s no question that (added) sugars are a major culprit in obesity, because they’re a source of empty calories. They have no nutritional benefit whatsoever.”

Learning From Our Leaders Morah Rabinowitz (2G)

T his week the Passaic Community suffered a great loss with the passing of Rabbi Isser Wolfson, צל’’ז .

Rabbi Wolfson was a huge תלמיד חכם, a genius with a photographic memory. He used all of his talents for As a young man, Rabbi Wolfson learned .לימוד התורהin the Lakewood Yeshiva where his extensive knowl-edge in all areas of תורה was well-known. Many people asked him questions they had in learning. After a few years, Rabbi Wolfson left Lake-wood to learn in the Brisker Yeshiva in Yerushalayim. Because he was a great Anav, he decided not to let his greatness be known; he sat quietly and learned. Only later did his genius mind become known. People who had previously learned with Rabbi Wolfson in Lakewood came to learn in the Brisker Yeshiva. The obvious way for them to have their questions answered was to ask Rabbi Wolfson. At first, others were perplexed about why they chose to do this. They knew Rabbi Wolfson as a quiet man who kept mostly to himself. This was the way in which Rabbi Wolfson’s greatness was then revealed.

T he 8th graders are nearing the end of our long journey through the organ systems of the hu-

man body. This unit has been challenging but the time we spent on it will serve our students well in their future studies and in life. Besides the final, comprehensive test, on the interrelations of the various organ systems, the unit is concluding with a report that the students have re-searched and written on a major development in medicine over the last few hundred years. Each student was as-signed a different topic which covered (among others): dis-covery of the circulation of blood, discovery of x-rays, devel-opment of the “germ theory of disease” and development of techniques for organ transplants.

S eforno, Ramban, Eben Ezra, Ohr Hachayim, Rashbam—7th grade girls have been getting a

taste of shivim panim le’torah, how many different interpretations there are of the pesukim. While sitting together with their chavrusas during Chumash class, the girls have the opportunity to prepare meforshim on their own, using guided questions, and to com-plete review assignments. We have just finished Par-shas Korach with Korach Kolorwar and our Korach freeze frame project and are heading into Parshas Chukas. The girls wrote and designed children’s story books containing a mashal and a nimshal in conjunction with the mashal that Nosson Hanavi uses to rebuke Dovid Hamelech in Sefer Shmuel Beis. Using visual aids, we are learning basic hilchos bishul. In tefillah, we are seeing the repeating themes throughout ka-balas shabbas of creation and geula. We have been busy this week preparing dinei Purim using the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch and working on our Megillah pro-jects.

T he 6th graders are studying a chapter on earthquakes. We have talked about earthquake waves, and how

these waves are measured. An article was read about the tragic earthquake in Haiti. They now understand which plates caused the earthquake. The 7th graders are busy learning about cellular biology. We have just covered the unit on photosynthesis. They have learned the steps needed by the plant to make glucose. They have found it pretty amazing that a small cell can perform so many complicated functions. We look forward to starting a unit on genetics in the future. The students are doing great in lab. We are doing a unit on nutrition. We tested for simple carbohydrates using Benedict solution. We have built a calorimeter to measure the amount of calories found in marshmallows. We even got to roast marshmallows, after our experiment, with can-dles!! (very scientific) The students are very enthusiastic about what they are learning!!

Sarina Karfunkel (7G) donated 15 inches of her hair to Chai Life-Line. What a מצוה!

On Monday, February 15, we once again had the privilege of hosting the Goodness Group. Our 7th graders did a super job in volunteering with the chil-dren. The girls were enthusiastic and really provided a fun and enjoyable morning for the children! Amidst all the exciting Purim preparations, 6G was off to the Daughters of Miriam on Wednes-day. They brought the happy and festive spirit of Pu-rim to the residents by baking Hamentashen. The girls also put on an adorable skit depicting the story of Purim in a rhyme!
