SIX DAYS OF WAR

A confession: it is especially hard to be a rabbi these days. In today’s political climate, rabbis often find themselves pulled in multiple directions at once. Our social media emphasizes these tensions, allowing people to vent their righteous indignation upon anyone holding a viewpoint different from their own. It gets ugly real fast.

Rabbi Yitz Greenberg once joked that Jewish religious movements are all imperfect. He said: “It doesn’t matter which Jewish movement you are affiliated with, as long as you’re ashamed of it”. And so we could probably all benefit from a little more introspection and humility when it comes to the bitter political discourse in our country. The Reform Movement of American Judaism is not perfect, but neither are we, as some claim, “the Democratic Party with stories.”

Our Jewish values focus on compassion for others but that doesn’t mean we don’t vigorously debate issues; and yet we should not let our families, our friendships, or our congregations be torn apart by those who would pounce on anyone who dares to

deviate from their own political orthodoxies. We all need to be careful to ensure that our internal divisions don’t consume us. Hence from the pulpit we rabbis need exercise restraint. And yet, rabbis should feel empowered to address the universal values rooted in our Torah that bind us together as Jews.

These days, and as we observe the 50th anniversary of the Six Day War, the tension between universal values and fidelity to the State of Israel has never been more pronounced. On the one hand, my heart goes out to the victims of historical Arab political gamesmanship, using Palestinian refugees as pawns in a propaganda war against Israel. On the other hand, I believe Israel has the right to protect itself from terror and ceaseless hatred from its neighbors.

If we could go back in time I would hope Israel would have agreed with David Ben Gurion, who instructed the Israeli government after the Six Day War to give back all the territories, save Jerusalem. They certainly have caused more problems as well as more bloodshed and heartbreak than anyone could have imagined.

And yet, on this side of history, all I can hope for is that – against reasonable hope – younger Palestinians will realize Israel is an existential reality and a partner for peace, not an eternal enemy. In the meantime, I hope America stands by Israel, supporting her right to exist and praying that the universal values

of compassion and respect for human life will be observed here and seven thousand miles away in our eternal homeland.

Last day of religious school

What a great year of learning about Derekh Eretz! I am so excited to be spending June 18 – July 2 at URJ Camp OSRUI with 23 campers from Temple Sholom. (There’s still a few open spots if your child wants to join me!) While I am on paternity leave in July, Stacy Charnay will be around to answer your questions about education, including Religious School registration.

Stay tuned for our 2017 – 18 Religious School guide and Adult Education curriculum brochure coming in August. We are excited to welcome Caleb Bromberg to the team as our new Youth Engagement and Curriculum Coordinator!

Crown Family High School and friends at Kabbalah Torah graduation Shabbat

Graduation Speech by Orr Shalom President Sydney Baer

Over the past 11 years at Temple Sholom and countless educational experiences and trips, I have found that Tikkun Olam is one of my favorite Jewish values. Through my senior seminar studies with Rabbi Goldberg and Rabbi Conover, I have begun to consider which qualities I will find within myself and use in order to work together with the world to create change and also a better life for myself. I have made unforgettable connections and friends here and I couldn’t be more grateful for our Crown Family High School and Orr Shalom youth group. I am excited to bring what I have discovered here at Temple Sholom with me to college and on my many other life adventures that

are to come. You all have taught me more than I could imagine and have made Temple Sholom one of my favorite places on Earth!

On Sabbatical, I Rested on Three Things: Mishpacha, Neshama & Talmud TorahMishpacha (Family)

My Sabbatical began with a week-long adventure in Costa Rica with our family, filled with whitewater rafting, zip lining, and volunteering. We spent the evenings on terraces and outdoor restaurants in the rainforest playing games and telling stories amidst the

howling of monkeys nearby. Perfect family time! Returning from our travels, we continued the trend of game playing, storytelling, and dinner together every night—just without the monkeys. We traveled to visit treasured extended family across the country as well as spent Shabbat in Chicago with friends who have become family.

Neshama (Soul)While in Costa Rica, I received a call inviting me to speak at the Women’s March on Chicago. What a soul-stirring honor to bring Torah to the day. Imagine hearing the crowd of thousands yelling, “Hineyni!” I met so many inspiring women that day and set out to meet with many of them in during the months of my sabbatical. In fact, meeting with inspirational faith leaders filled many of my days. I met with them throughout the city—in Pilsen, Oak Park, Hyde Park, and, yes, even Deerfield. I learned so much from them and the work that they do in their neighborhoods. I hope to help our Temple Sholom community continue to nurture relationships with other faith communities across difference.

I was in a good mindset to do this because I spent each morning doing yoga. In fact, some of my favorite moments of sabbatical were spent cultivating my Jewish meditation practice and creative davening (prayer

experiences). This allowed me to have a clear mind and strong body to pursue two of my favorite writing projects: 1. putting the finishing touches on an article for an upcoming CCAR Press book entitled Seven Days, Many Voices: Insights Into the Biblical Story of Creation, edited by Rabbi Ben David; and 2. writing poetry. I attended some wonderful poetry writing workshops at the Poetry Foundation and spent time creating new poems as well as editing old poems. I also had a clear mind to bring to strategizing sessions with thoughtful colleagues on the future of social justice work in the Reform Movement. You will see and, no doubt, help to further shape this strategy in the coming months. Temple Sholom is and will continue to be at the forefront of this work.

Talmud Torah (Torah Study)When it comes to feeding my soul and spirit, there is nothing quite like the Hebrew language—both speaking and reading Modern Hebrew and immersing myself in the language of our ancient texts. Hence, I spent a good deal of my time engrossed in both. Twice a week, I Skyped with Nadav at Ulpan-Or in Jerusalem to brush up on my modern Hebrew. Yet, that didn’t quite compare with the weekly meeting with my friend Moran with whom I studied a collection of poetry by Yehuda Amichai called Patuach Sagur Patuah (Open Closed Open). We studied and discussed the themes of his poetry in Hebrew. It was an amazing mental work out and it nourished my soul! Soon, you will learn much more about a project I began on my sabbatical studying the connection between love and justice in Jewish texts. My thesis: love—as defined in Judaism—is the source of justice. Want to hear more and add your opinion? Join my adult education course on it next year!

Summer is around the corner, and Sholom Justice is using these long days to continue our many acts of tikkun olam.Throughout the summer, we will continue our weekly Monday Meal. Please sign up to volunteer – many of our regular student volunteers are out of town so we need you now more than ever! Feed the Hungry opportunities are available on Sunday, June 11 & July 9. We are grateful as always

to the Feed the Hungry crew who provide monthly meals to folks gathered at the Bethlehem Healing Center on the second and 5th Sundays of the month. Temple Sholom is excited to announce that, along with HIAS-Chicago, we hope to welcome a refugee family shortly.

We are grateful to the Sholom co-chairs of this initiative, Janet Silverberg Dale and Jo Ann Potashnick. In late August, Rabbi Conover will once again host our Sholom Justice barbeque. Look for upcoming details.

Temple Sholom of Chicago, founded in 1867, is one of Chicago’s oldest synagogues; an institution of great historical significance within the Reform Movement and the City of Chicago. Throughout its history, the Temple has represented a dynamic, modern approach to Judaism – one that has evolved with the times and continues to innovate in order to meet the needs of members and their families.

The Temple’s 150th Anniversary year provides a beautiful backdrop for exciting opportunities of celebration and planning for the next 150 years. Over the past few years, Temple volunteers engaged in a visioning process that led to the development of a comprehensive strategic plan, one that focuses on enhancing our community experience, balancing our values and sense of belonging with the changes of modern life.

Our Temple is a sacred community that embraces, inspires, and matters.

Embrace ֵּבִח קBe the Chicago area’s most welcoming Reform congregation.

Inspire הָאָרְׁשַהElevate what only we can provide: Spirituality and Meaning; Uplift, awaken, and energize in all that we do with a strong connection to Jewish culture and learning.

Matter ָמְׁשַמ תּועMatter to each other, our neighborhood, our city, our country, and the world. Matter to ourselves, and matter to G-d.

Two areas of strategic focus emerged in the planning process, challenging us to preserve the best of our past and blend it with our community’s hopes for the future. In the near term, we will work on improving and enhancing member engagement by practicing audacious hospitality. We will also implement changes to our governance structure, primarily reflected through changes in Board composition and the creation of auxiliary working bodies, including a Leadership Council and a Past President’s Council. The changes will be coupled with enhancing and reimagining our space with incremental physical modifications to our building in order to create a warmer feeling of welcome. The goal remains to fulfil our core mission and purpose relative to worship, learning, and community.
